Does anyone have any suggestions for the cheapest areas in Manhattan to park where we can easily get to Times Square?

We have braved parking on the street and got a $100+ ticket because we read the sign wrong. We have also parked in the garages for just a few hours and paid almost $60! :earseek:

Any suggestions for CHEAP secure parking near midtown Manhattan?

Thanks!

ok that was unfair.

lets see...you could try the port authority bus terminal but speaking as a joisey girl for over 20 years we always either chose to pay for the convenience of SAFE parking or we didn't park in Manhattan at all and took some form of mass transit over. I'll park on the street in a car I don't care about. There is no such thing as cheap parking in Manhattan but...if you have an entertainment book for one of the new york metro areas they may have parking coupons in the back.

You dont say where you are coming from. Growing up I lived on long island. From there we would park at a mall in Queens and catch the E train into Manhattan (Rego Park?). From NJ there are a variety of places you can park and catch a train or bus. One fun option is to park in Weehawken and take the ferry...not cheap but you do get all day use of the Waterway busses along with your fare and parking. If you only have a couple of people this is a good option. The ferry lets you off by the Javits Center and the Waterway busses are right there.

The only cheap parking in NYC is the metered parking. You have to get lucky to get the extended meters, where you can park for several hours at a time.

The cheapest lot that I know of is on 42nd St between 10th Ave & 11th Ave., south side of the street.

That is where we parked when we were there a few years sgo- only $16 all day on the weekend. Cheaper than DC or Baltimore where I work.

We ALWAYS park at the Port Authority. As you exit the Lincoln Tunnel (and hopefully you'll be in the right lanes), you'll see the signs on your right. Just pull in and park. I think its about $20 all day, not a bad deal at all. From there, you are steps from Times Square and a subway away from anywhere else.

I was in NYC in June, parked right in Times Square (i think 47th st.), and paid only $25 for 24 hours. I say "only" because it was divided by 4 people. It was SOOOOO convenient to have our car near us. BUT it can be a bit of trouble to go back to your car if you forget something -- you usually have to be accompanied by an attendant.

FYI - This is not an issue at Port Authority as that is self-parking, not valet.

The cheapest lots in Manhattan are on west end avenue (11th avenue) just north of 57th street. It's a HUGE outdoor lot and you can park for the day for 10-12 depending on when you pull in. The entrance is on 11th ave (I think it's 60th street). Bring a metrocard or $2 in coins and you can hop on the M57 bus right outside the entrance, it takes you all the way east on 57th street.

Part of it depends upon when you are going. The *cheapest* parking is free street parking. There's free on-street parking from 7PM - 7AM many places in the West 30's. But you do have to understand all the rules and options. Also, this only works if you know what you are doing ahead of time. Those spots tend to all fill up right around 7PM.

I've parked at the two places mentioned by other posters off 11th without any problems. As well as the at the Port Authority. Personally, I've never found the PA lot to be cheap, but it has one *huge* advantage. When leving via the Lincoln Tunnel, you go right in without having to wait in traffic.

Ooops sorry, should have been more clear. I am flying into LGA (LaGuardia) and a friend is picking me up. We are heading to the city to shop and have lunch with my sister who lives on West 46th a few blocks from Times Square then we are driving back upstate. I would just take the subway into the city and meet up with my friend then take Metro North trains back but I have my luggage and we will have shopping bags so we need the car.

Thanks for the great advice!! Now if the snow would just hold off on Saturday so I can LAND.

We are coming in this Saturday to shop. I know we are nuts but we will probably hit American Girl Place at some point that afternoon so parking near there would be a dream but impossible I am sure!
