Oh my! Looks like I'll be going grocery shopping tonight. We may possibly have a snow day from school this week. Think I'll stock up tonight on ingredients to make some of this yummy stuff!

BTW, I am trying a new recipe on Thursday night for chocolate mint bars. If they turn out good, I'll share the recipe here.

I've been scribbling recipes all morning and now it's my turn to contribute.
Take a boxed pound cake mix and prepare according to the directions (egg, oil and water, I think) add to it 2 pouches of spiced cider mix. Then just bake. It's an incredibly easy way to add some extra flavor to the pound cake.

And thank you ALL for your recipes. I bake for my extended family every year in an effort to keep my budget under control and these easy and fast recipes are fantastic! :thumbsup2

Refrigerated canned biscuits
Cinnamon and sugar, mixed together for coating
Deep fryer with oil (350-375 degrees)

Directions:

Take a small film container and press it into the center of each biscuit making donut and hole... then put into heated oil to fry. Turn donuts after the first side is browned nicely. When done, remove from oil immediately and coat in cinnamon sugar. I put mine in a plastic zip bag and shake well to coat.

These are best eaten the same day.

I loved these as a kid - except we wouldn't do the cinnamon and sugar - Mom would thin a can of icing with milk to make a glaze and we'd have all different kinds of sprinkles to decorate with. I think we had these for breakfast at every sleepover at my house!

Thanks for the warm memory!

These ARE yummy! We make them but we put them in a brown paper bag and pour the seasonings in and shake. Then pour them out onto the cookie sheet. I always smash my chex mix when I stir to coat. (not that these are chex mix, but same type of thing).

Yes, I personally blamed this thread for the pounds I put on last Christmas! It seemed so easy that I would make a treat after dinner for my kids (uh, yeah, that's the story) every night.

However, I must say that this thread came in handy last week when my DD10 had to do a "how to" project last week. She taught her class how to make the chocolate pretzel wreaths...a big hit!

I remember a boy in my fifth grade class made these for his demonstration speech. I remember they were SO good, but didn't remember the recipe. Now whenever I go down the cracker/cookie aisle in the grocery store and see those oyster crackers or see the packet of ranch dressing I remember those crackers--Yummy! And that was 16 years ago :)
Thanks for posting--can't wait to make them now!

I saw something really easy today. Hallmark is getting $3.50 each for chocolate dipped candy canes. Unwrap, hold by the bent top part, dip in melted chocolate, cool, wrap in a baggie & tie with a ribbon. So easy!

Mocha Ice Cafe
Ingredients:

Sugar, to taste
2 to 3 tablespoons sweetened whipped cream (or whipped topping)

3. Add the ice cream and top with the whipped cream.
4. Taste and add sugar, if desired.

We make a variation of these. My mom calls them firecrackers.
1 1oz ranch dressing
Use 1 tbsp cayenne(less if you want a milder version)
olive oil
garlic powder instead of the salt
saltine crackers
no lemon pepper
We spread the crackers brush oil onto the crackers and then sprinkle the powdered mix onto the crackers. Also,as we check the crackers,we flip them and add more oil. However, I like the way that mrp4352 mixes everything together and I'll do this next time. Serve with cream cheese-you can't beat the spicy taste topped with the coolness of the cream cheese.

Okay, it is mine and my BFF's cookie baking weekend this weekend. The sad news, she is now hours away and we won't get to do all of our cooking together. So, we're cooking a few things apart and trading and then we will be making some goodies together. So, I started baking yesterday. I made the peppermint bark (Wonderful! :thumbsup2 ) I then tried to make the turtles. Here is my tip for anyone wanting to try this...Hershey's Kisses don't melt. Don't use kisses. I would recommend melting the caramels on top of the pecans, letting them set up, and then dipping the whole thing in chocolate. Kisses just don't melt. Learned this the hard way. :confused3

Let share some quick and easy Christmas or other Holiday treat ideas/recipes for those of us who don't have time to make lots of cookies. Please only include ideas/recipes that take less than 30 minutes to make. My favorite is...

Pretzel wreaths
Ingredients
Pretzel rings (round shaped pretzels)
Hershey's Hugs
Christmas M&M's
Easy release aluminum foil

WHERE can I find the pretzel rings????? I have looked at 1 of my local grocery stores & walmart and can just find the traditional twisted ones & sticks or rods, I cannot find the rings at all!

I couldn't find them last year, either. I used the regular twists, and they turned out just fine!

Cranberry-Brie tarts

1 package Athens Foods Mini Fillo Dough Shells (15 shells)

1/3 cup cranberry sauce, divided

1 8-ounce wheel of brie cheese, rind removed and cut into 15 pieces

15 pecan halves

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Remove fillo shells and place on a baking sheet. Spoon 1/2 teaspoon of cranberry sauce into each shell, top with a piece of brie and a pecan half. Bake for 5 minutes, until cheese melts, and serve immediately.

Makes 15 hors d'oeuvres

These Phillo Shells also make great mini quiche. Just sprinkle some gruyere cheese, a little crumbled bacon, and finely chopped onion into the shells. Top with a mixture of heavy cream, beaten eggs, and seasonings, then bake. Super easy!

Another very easy appetizer... I buy those small little cocktail loaves of Italian bread and toast them in the oven until crunchy. I then top them with Italian diced tomato..straight out of the can, and sprinke with a little freshly shredded parm., then pop back in the oven to melt.

Not sure if this ones already been posted...

Easy Sausage Cheese Balls..
One tube of mild or spicy sausage (I use mild Jimmy Dean) one 10oz. block of sharp chedder cheese shredded ( I use Cracker Barrel Extra Sharp), 3 cups of Bisquick, and 1/2 tsp. of red pepper. Mix together very well..I usually run it through my food processor...roll into balls and bake for 30 minutes at 350.

Easy peppermint pie..Mix Oreo cookie crumbs with a few tbls. melted butter, and press into a pie plate or casserole dish. Mix one tub of Cool Whip with as many crushed peppermints as you like, spread on top of the Oreo crust, then refrigerate. That's it!!

Nobody ever guesses how easy it is, and they always think it's some sort of fancy peppermint mousse! :rotfl:

I made gingerbread cookies today from the northpole.com website. I made powdered sugar icing to decorate them. However, I decided to do it with a twist. Instead of milk, I just mixed eggnog into the powdered sugar. It's subtle taste really makes the gingerbread yummy!

I am sure I am not the only one who has done or does this, but I didn't see it here; so, I thought I would offer the suggestion. ;)

Make your favorite oatmeal cookie recipe and add cinnamon, craisins (instead of raisins) and the zest of 1 orange. It's very festive with the red from the craisins and all the flavors complement each other. :cloud9:

I seem to recall a posting but have no idea what it is..could someone help me.

I think it was the mint oreo's--crushed and combined with something like creme cheese or something...I don't recall the effect...maybe made it truffle like or something--oreo truffles, maybe?

Anyone know what I am talking about?

Thanks!

NM--just googled once it dawned on me it was called truffles....

Using a food processor, grind cookies to a fine powder.
With a mixer, blend cookie powder and cream cheese until thoroughly mixed (there should be no white traces of cream cheese).
Roll into small balls and place on wax-lined cookie sheet.
Refrigerate for 45 minutes.
Line two cookie sheets with wax paper.
In double-boiler, melt milk chocolate.
Dip balls and coat thoroughly.
With slotted spoon, lift balls out of chocolate and let excess chocolate drip off.
Place on wax-paper-lined cookie sheet.
In separate double boiler, melt white chocolate.
Using a fork, drizzle white chocolate over balls.
Let cool.
Store in airtight container, in refrigerator.

Is it possible to ship these to people, or probably not b/c of the cream cheese. :(

This was in the paper today.

1 package Oreo cookies
1 package cream cheese (room temperature)
chocolate for dipping

1. Chop Oreos in a food processor until nothing but crumbs remain. Put crumbs in a large bowl and mix thoroughly with cream chees until doughlike. Roll into balls about 1 inch in dimameter and chill.
2. After chilling, dip the Oreo balls in melted chocolate and let dry on waxed paper. An optional decoration would be to drizzle white choclate across the top or dip the Oreo balls in white chocolate and drizzle with dark chocolate.

(In the picture they did them in red chocolate and brown chocolate drizzle. They look incredible.)

Is this the one you are looking for? I made these a couple of weeks ago and they were pretty darn good. :thumbsup2

Here are some treats I made over Thanksgiving, inspired by this thread.

Pretzel rods dipped in chocolate, sprinkled with Heath bits. Also made some & sprinkled with crushed peppermint, but didn't photo those. Then drizzed white chocolate over all.

Then the "smores" marshmallows, dipped in chocolate, and dunked the ends in graham cracker crumbs. So incredibly easy. :thumbsup2

This is sort of a fall recipe but we love it year round at our house.

PUMPKIN MUFFINS
1 box spice cake mis
1 can pure pumpkin
2 tbsp. water.

Mix together and bake using the cupcake time and temperature on cake box. Great by themselves or with a little cool whip on top. They freeze well too.
PS-they are fairly low in fat!

just wanted to jump on the recipe list....anyone have a recipe for a holiday punch?
I haven't made it through the whole thread, but this is a delicious, easy and very pretty punch--
1/2 gal softened cherry vanilla ice cream
1 qt. orange sherbert
Red Hawaiian Punch (depends upon how large your punch bowl as to how much to add)
Stir a little to break up some clumps, but don't worry too much, of course they will melt later :)
Just before serving add enough ginger ale to get the now foamy mixture to the top of the bowl.
It is a beatiful pink color and the frothy top looks very festive.

Thanks so much for this thread. I have to bring a treat to a Christmas party tonight so I made the easy turtles and dipped pretzel rods.

The turtles were super easy - mini pretzels, rolos and pecans. The pretzel rods were a little more time consuming.

I used the idea to wrap caramel around the rods before dipping. I just microwaved some caramel squares for a few seconds and put them in some saran wrap and rolled. I then took pieces of the caramel while it was still warm and rolled it into snakes and then wrapped around the rods.

I used microwaved chocolate almond bark squares for dipping and then rolled into chopped pecans. I also kept some plain and dipped a couple in sprinkles. With the leftover chocolate I threw in some of the mini pretzels and covered in sprinkles.

Not a store locator, but a list of distributors http://www.jaysfoods.com/distribution.asp#otherstates
and the option to buy online http://www.jaysfoods.com/buy.asp?m=showProductLine&line=3 or, this site http://mybrandsinc.com/ShopOnline/Catalog.asp?t=7&s=JAYS&ss=0&p=4764 lets you buy less than full-case quantities.

Garsh! Ya made my favorite treat from Goofy's Candy Co. :thumbsup2 I always get the pretzel rods dipped in chocolate, rolled in pecans and drizzled with caramel. :goodvibes

And your mini pretzels with the sprinkles look so festive...gonna have to add more sprinkles to my shopping list. I am gonna get started on making the candy treats in a couple of weeks, once I'm on break from work. I'm planning to make...
pretzels dipped in chocolate
marshmallows dipped in chocolate and some of the smores version
quick turtles
oreo truffles
maple fudge
cookie dough truffles
divinity
heavenly hash...if I can find the recipe and if I do, I'll post it...it's like a cherry cordial

I've made a deal with my sister...I'll do the candy and she can bake all the cookies then we'll share our goodies to make a well rounded sugar rush. :bitelip:

I plan on making several of the treats listed here in this thread, and I'd like to out them in clear cellophane bags, tie them with nice ribbon and present them as gifts.

Does anyone know any stores that carry the clear cellophane bags? I'm looking for pretty good sized ones that can hol,d the popcorn- and smaller ones that will hold the turtles.

THANKS to anyone that can give me a good suggestion.

PB FUDGE VERDICT.....and his words exactly.....OH MY GOD!(say this as if in ectasy) :rotfl2: So I guess it passes muster. LOL One word of advice, just thinking about it...prob a good idea to keep refridgerated as much as possible. The ingredients may soften quite a bit at room temp. I will have to experiment with a piece to see how long it takes. LOL..I asked him if he wanted to take some back to work with him to share..the answer was an adament NO!

I didnt have PAM or a glass pan...so I improvised and used margarine and a foil toss out pan. It was still awesome...kinda a cross between fudge and that PB playdough stuff you make with powdered milk and cornsryup ---just not so sticky.

Try one of the Dollar Stores Karebear. They had some nice bags with pretty holiday designs at the one near here 30 in a package for one buck and they even came with the silver twist ties. If they are too long, just cut them down to size. That way you wont have to buy 2 different sizes and be stuck with lots of extras.

I found pretzel rod and lollpop sized clear celophane bags in the cake decorating section of Walmart:confused3 They had long or short sticks(lollipop). The packs contained 25 bags for under two dollars. The lollipops were 50 sticks for under two dollars.

:thumbsup2

Those look so good! I love the "smores" marshmallows! That may be what my DS7 will make for his friends this year! What a great thing!

That recipe is similar to the no bakes I made back in college. If they are anything like mine, they are addicting and there better be milk handy.

I made the peppermint almond bark for 2 parties this weekend. It got rave reviews and took less than 5 minutes to make!

I melted a package of vanilla almond bark in the microwave (followed timing directions on the back of the package). Then, I added in a cup of crushed candy canes. Pour onto a foil lined cookie sheet & let set til hardened. Then, break into pieces. It was so good! Thanks to whoever originally posted this idea! (I would thank you by name, but I really don't want to go back through all 500 post :rotfl: )

I've read several hundred posts..............anyone heard of a cookie recipe using Ritz crackers?
Any tips on melting white chocolate? I have scorcthed it several times, it's getting expensive. I also can't find almond bark.

I only know of one recipe with Ritz crackers, and it's really good.

You buy the small peanut butter sandwich Ritz crackers and coat them in white chocolate or almond bark. You can sprinkle them with candy sprinkles on top if you like. It's another good combination of salty and sweet.

Our Winn Dixie has almond bark, but it's not with the baking items this time of year. It's usually on an end cap.

I follow the microwave directions for melting. You just have to do it for small amounts of time and stir well in between.

(just my opinion)The almond bark or candy coatings and wafers do much better. If you have a cake decorating supply store near you they usually sell the Hershey (someone bought them out so the name has changed) brand wafers..very good quality, a bit more expensive. Some call them party centers, they have molds for making chocolate candys, that is a simple thing to make and so much fun!

1 can (1 1/3 c.) flaked coconut
12 oz. pkg. milk chocolate chips
1 c. broken pecans (optional)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (I use Eagle Brand.)

I have one to share if you all promise not to make fun it!

I will preface it by saying.. "I DO NOT BAKE!"
However, I have to bring a dozen of something to my DD's preschool program tonight, so...

12 Hostess Ding Dongs (unwrapped and laid on a plate so as to make me look less pathetic)

Green Decorator Icing in a spray can

Pre-made Holiday "candy cake decorations" ( they come in all kinds of styles.. I got the Rudlophs and Gingerbread men)

I just put a circle (glob) of green icing on top of each Ding Dong and laid a decorator candy on top and Presto!

Believe it or not, they look really cute!!!

Time spent : 5 minutes.. (and most of that was unwrapping each Ding Dong!)

Chocolate dipped pretzels and marshmallows
We recently attended an Octoberfest celebration --- and of course, we had to go in the candy store. Next to the chocolate dipped pretzels (which looked pretty tasty) were chocolate dipped marshmallows. Three-four big marshmallows, dipped in chocolate... some were then rolled in nuts or sprinkles. They looked really tasty and easy to make. They also had chocolate dipped bananas and some really great candied apples and caramel apples. So, if you're already dipping pretzel rods...you might try some of the other dipped items too.

--------------------

MIDNIGHT MERINGUES (they "bake" while you sleep!)
2 egg whites (room temperature)
Pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. creme de menthe or other mint flavoring
few drops green food coloring
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 275. Grease 2 cookie sheets. Beat 2 egg whites with pinch of salt and 1/2 tsp cream of tartar until foamy. Gradually add 3/4 cup sugar. Add 1/2 teaspoon flavoring and a few drops of food coloring. (For Christmas I make pink and green meringues - for the pink ones use red food coloring and a raspberry flavoring). Beat until stiff. Stir in chocolate chips. Put by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheet. Put in oven and TURN OFF IMMEDIATELY. Leave in 6 hours or overnight. Make approximately 5 dozen.

For gifts, I place pink and green meringues in a glass canister type jar and tie a ribbon on top. Everyone loves these!!

--------------------

Chocolate Covered Potato Chips
A Huge Bag of Ruffles Potato Chips (they work best because of the small, closer together ridges). Only use whole or bigger pieces of chips.

Dip or coat (if easier) both sides of each chip and place on wax paper. Place in fridge for a few minutes to set and you're done. They really are good!

--------------------

Easy Donuts

--------------------

Have you ever tried a pretzel ring with a ROLO candy in the middle. Place in oven (about 250 degrees) for 6-8 minutes. Add a pecan half on top, let cool and you have a crunchy, chocolatey, carmely, nutty snack.

--------------------

I took 2 instant white chocolate puddings, mixed them in different bowls, added red food dye to one, and green to the other. In 8 small glass mini bowls put a bottom layer(2 tablespoons) of red, then a layer of green (2 tablespoons), then another layer of red, and green. You can either leave it like that or take the end of a spoon and stir a little so it looks swirled.
A great touch to your pretzels is, get white chocolate chips, melt them and add 3-4 drops of green dye. Get a spoon full of the chocolate (to keep the chocolate warm, use a bigger bowl full of hot water and place your chocolate bowl into it), and drizzle over the pretzel rings. As the chocolate starts to harden on your pretzels start to push it into an O shape and sprinkle red, and white sprinkles onto them. Once they are completely hard take those gel decorating tubes for cookies and cake and draw a bow on the bottom.

--------------------

We bought a small package of those Brownie Bites at SAMS (little brownies shaped like cupcake bottoms!!)
Then I put a little glob of whip cream on them and DD decorates them with sprinkles, gum drops, smashed candy cane fragments! and voila instant cupcakes!!
IT's sooo fun and super easy for the younger kids! we usually do a station of these at family parties, to involve the kids in something!

--------------------

Christmas Meltaway Mints.
1 package of cream cheese
4 cups (or more) icing sugar
1 tsp peppermint extract

In a mixer mix the cream cheese until soft and smooth. Add the icing sugar a little at a time until it becomes firm enough to handle. Sprinkle icing sugar on surface and knead in the peppermint extract. Divide into four and roll into ropes. Cut into pieces and let dry in the fridge over night.
You can add food colouring or add other flavours to mix it up. I like to divide it into half and make lemon mints and orange mints, just add 1/4 tsp mint and 1/4 tsp lemon extract or other flavour.

--------------------

Holiday Hot Cider
1 gallon apple cider
2 pkg. cherry koolaid w/ nutrasweet
1/4 t cinnamon
1/4 t nutmeg
1/4 t cloves
cinnamon sticks to float - optional
orange rind to float - optional

Mix and warm. We mix up the whole batch and then put it back in the gallon container (minus our taste tests, of course) and into the fridge. When we want a glass, we pour it and pop it in the microwave to warm it up. It smells wonderful while it is warming on the stove.

--------------------

Pistachio Pudding Salad

12 oz cool whip
1 small instant pistachio pudding
1 lg. can crushed pineapple

Mix together pudding & pineapple. Do NOT drain pineapple. Mix in cool whip.

--------------------

Shrimp Dip
1 soft cream cheese
1 jar shrimp sauce
1-2 cans tiny shrimp

On dinner plate, spread the cream cheese evenly. Then do the same with the shrimp sauce. Top with shrimp. Use crackers for dipping.

--------------------

Easy Fruit Dip
1 soft strawberry cream cheese
Orange juice (have also used pineapple juice)

Leave cream cheese out to soften. Add orange juice to dipping consistency. Serve with any kind of cut fruit. Kids love this.

--------------------

Peppermint Bark
I melted half a bag of light cocoa chips and spread it out thin on parchment paper. Put in the freezer for a minute to harden. Then melted half a bag of white chips and crushed 10 peppermint candies and mixed in. Spread over the hardened chocolate and put back in the freezer for a minute. Cut into bite size pieces. Looks great!

--------------------

Great Aunt Bess' Banana Bread
Mix:
1 1-1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 beaten eggs
4 T milk
dash salt

Add:

3 soft bananas
1 t soda
2 cups flour
1 pkg chopped nuts (optional)

Line bread tins with aluminum foil and pour in mixture 3/4 full. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Depending on size of bananas, baking time might be longer. It is done when toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Makes one large loaf.

--------------------

I just thought of (and they already do this at WDW) when we go down again in the summer buying mickey pretzels (non-chocolate ones) and then decorating them with chocolate and colored sugar or whatever. I wonder if unopened pretzels keep for a few months?

--------------------

I know that my friends that are on diets like to have fruit & fruit dip if you can come up with a low fat version of a dip. You could get the low fat strawberry cream cheese and add a little orange juice for a quick dip.

--------------------

Another really good fruit dip is lemon yogurt with cool whip mixed into it. You can get the fat free kind with both. I know that it is a hit whenever it is brought.
For a veggie dip- we get fat free sour cream and mix in dry ranch dressing.

--------------------

A quick Fat Free, Sugar Free, Low Cal but REALLY yummy fruit dip recipe I made up:
(this is for an individual serving..if you want more just adjust the amounts)

2-3 Big scoops of Frozen Cool Whip Free (it HAS to be frozen)
1 small packet of Splenda

Zap in microwave for 10-12 secs. stir really well until the consistency of marshmallow topping (like the kind on a sundae). Dip your fruit. It's really good with blueberries! Kids love this as well. You can probably add a little juice for more flavor, but I've never done that.
It tastes just like marshmallow, but w/o all the extra sugar. Ironically, I happened to have reg. marshmallow topping in the fridge. Cool Whip Free and the topping had the exact same ingredients except the fat and sugar. The difference is in the consistency.

--------------------

From my Southern Living Christmas 2006 book:

A good kids punch recipe!
Equal parts white grape juice and club soda! it's bubbly & fun! Dsis and i used to think we were cool when our parents served it in a champagne glass (plastic of course!!)
I like to add strawberry slices too!!-+

--------------------

A fun tip for hot chocolate!
After pouring it and adding a dollop of whipped cream, during the holidays i like to add some candy cane fragments on top! it looks great and adds a bit of flavor!!
(i just take a candy cane and crush it with a meat tenderizer!)

--------------------

YUUUMMMY SANGRIA recipe:
1 liter of club soda
1.5 cups of sugar
1 bottle of red wine

Mix together and add fresh fruit slices!!!
I find this a GREAT use for cheap red wine that i wouldn't otherwise like the flavor of.

--------------------

chocolate covered oreo cookie lollipops
Stick a lollipop stick through a double-stuffed oreo , dip in melted chocolate, decorate with sprinkles for the holiday, let harden (sometimes we make these on Valentines day and use pink or white chocolate/candy wafers, and sprinkle with hearts/lips... you can do any color chocolate and so many different holiday sprinkles.. st. patricks, etc)
place in clear lollipop bag and tie with a ribbon.

--------------------

Here is a great site for different holiday recipes
http://www.northpole.com/Kitchen/Cookbook/

--------------------

Chocolate covered cherries60 maraschino cherries(about three 10oz jars)
3 TBSP maragarine or butter(whichever you prefer)
3 TBSP light corn syrup
2 C sifted powdered sugar
1 bag wiltons candy melts.

Drain cherries thoroughly on paper towels to remove all moisture. Combine butter & corn syrup. Stir in powdered sugar; knead mixture till smooth(chill if too soft to handle)
Shape about 1/2 tsp of your "fondant" around each cherry. Place onto baking sheet lined with waxed paper and chill about 1 hr or until firm.(Don't chill too long or your fondant will begin to dissolve) I always check after 45 mins.
Melt your chocolate melts and by holding the stem, dip your cherries. Set onto a waxed paper lined baking sheet and let chocolate set up.
These are best left in the fridge for a week or two before eating so the fondant can soften and liquefy a little.

--------------------

Chocolate Phyllo Cookies
Buy frozen Phyllo dough and plan Hershey's candy bars (milk or dark chocolate) ... break candy appart into individual squares. Brush Phyllo with melted butter or spray with spray butter. Cut strips of Phyllo a bit wider than the candy. Place a piece of chocolate on a strip and fold like a flag into a triangle. Bake at 375 till lightly golden brown and then cool ... dust with powdered sugar &/or cocoa &/or cinnamon.

--------------------

Raspberry Almond Shortbread Thumbprint Cookies
2/3 cup of sugar
1 cup butter softened
1/2 tsp almond extract
2 cups all purpose flour
seedless raspberry jam (for filling)

Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp almond extract
2 -3 tsp water

Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, combine sugar, butter, and extract. Beat at medium speed until creamy - 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce speed to low; add flour. Continue beating until well mixed - 1 to 2 minutes. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. With thumb, make indentation in center of each cookie (edges may crack slightly). Fill each indentation with about 1/4 tsp of raspberry jam. Bake 14 to 16 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let stand 1 minute - remove from cookie sheets.

In a small bowl, stir together powdered sugar and extract. Gradually stir in enough water to make a thin glaze. Drizzle over warm cookies (hint: put glaze into a zip lock bag and cut a tiny corner off and use bag to spread glaze).
Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

--------------------

I'm watching this show on the Food Network right now & they showed this woman who took the simple chocolate covered pretzels she made & after dipping, covered them up with some festive toppings like multi-colored sprinkles, or chopped nuts, or rice crispies, shredded coconut, mini m&m's, then drizzled them with white & dark chocolate, etc. The more colors & variety the better!

It looked sooo easy! You just need enough sprinkles & toppings to lay out in a big wide bowl or cookie sheet to literally bury the chocolate covered pretzels in. They looked so colorful, festive and not your ordinary pretzels.

Here's a link to the woman's website so you can see the finished pretzels:
http://www.pretzables.com/
In between the twisted pretzels, she covered thick pretzel rods, (not the little sticks,) then twisted them into the toppings. She wrapped a few up together into a colorful pretzel rod "bouquet" with a ribbon. It looked yummy!

Take a boxed pound cake mix and prepare according to the directions (egg, oil and water, I think) add to it 2 pouches of spiced cider mix. Then just bake. It's an incredibly easy way to add some extra flavor to the pound cake.

Spiced Oyster Crackers
These are YUMMY!!

2 10-12 oz. packages of oyster crackers
1 scant cup oil
1 1 oz. package dry ranch dressing
2 tsp dill weed
2 tsp lemon pepper
1 heaping tsp garlic salt

Spread the crackers out into a baking sheet with high sides (or a 9x13 works). Add the seasonings into the oil and whisk, then pour over the oyster crackers. Stir to coat all the crackers. Bake at 200 degrees for 20 minutes stirring every 5-7 minutes.

--------------------

Humdingers
½ c butter 1 c chopped pecans
1 c sugar 1 c diced dates
1 ½ c rice krispies powdered sugar

Put butter, sugar, dates and pecans into skillet over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Take off heat. Add rice krispies. Let cool slightly. Roll into balls and roll balls into powdered sugar.

I saw something really easy today. Hallmark is getting $3.50 each for chocolate dipped candy canes. Unwrap, hold by the bent top part, dip in melted chocolate, cool, wrap in a baggie & tie with a ribbon. So easy!

1/4 c Packed Brown Sugar

Cranberry-Brie tarts
1 package Athens Foods Mini Fillo Dough Shells (15 shells)
1/3 cup cranberry sauce, divided
1 8-ounce wheel of brie cheese, rind removed and cut into 15 pieces

Makes 15 hors d'oeuvres

These Phillo Shells also make great mini quiche. Just sprinkle some gruyere cheese, a little crumbled bacon, and finely chopped onion into the shells. Top with a mixture of heavy cream, beaten eggs, and seasonings, then bake. Super easy!
--------------------

Another very easy appetizer... I buy those small little cocktail loaves of Italian bread and toast them in the oven until crunchy. I then top them with Italian diced tomato..straight out of the can, and sprinke with a little freshly shredded parm., then pop back in the oven to melt.

--------------------

Easy Sausage Cheese Balls
One tube of mild or spicy sausage (I use mild Jimmy Dean) one 10oz. block of sharp chedder cheese shredded ( I use Cracker Barrel Extra Sharp), 3 cups of Bisquick, and 1/2 tsp. of red pepper. Mix together very well..I usually run it through my food processor...roll into balls and bake for 30 minutes at 350.

--------------------

I made gingerbread cookies today from the northpole.com website. I made powdered sugar icing to decorate them. However, I decided to do it with a twist. Instead of milk, I just mixed eggnog into the powdered sugar. It's subtle taste really makes the gingerbread yummy!

Truffles

--------------------

PUMPKIN MUFFINS
1 box spice cake mis
1 can pure pumpkin
2 tbsp. water.

Mix together and bake using the cupcake time and temperature on cake box. Great by themselves or with a little cool whip on top. They freeze well too.
PS-they are fairly low in fat!

--------------------

Holiday Punch
I haven't made it through the whole thread, but this is a delicious, easy and very pretty punch--
1/2 gal softened cherry vanilla ice cream
1 qt. orange sherbert
Red Hawaiian Punch (depends upon how large your punch bowl as to how much to add)
Stir a little to break up some clumps, but don't worry too much, of course they will melt later.
Just before serving add enough ginger ale to get the now foamy mixture to the top of the bowl.
It is a beatiful pink color and the frothy top looks very festive.

--------------------

Brownie Trifle
1 batch chocolate chunk brownies cut into 1 inch squares
1-2 boxes prepared instant chocolate pudding
10 ounces Toffee Bits
16 ounce Cool Whip

Layer in trifle bowl in that order. Refrigerate over night.
I usually get two or three layers from each ingredient.

--------------------

Mounds or ALmond Joy
1 can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 Lbs. Powdered Sugar
2 Sticks Butter or Margarine
2 Tsp. Vanilla
1 Large Package Coconut

Melt the butter. In large bowl mix all ingrediants together. Press into buttered cookie sheet and chill over night. Cut into square and dipp into melted chocolate. Let set up on wax paper. You can pace a almond on top of each square if you like Almond Joys.

--------------------

Hello Dolly or 7 Layer Magic Cookie Bars
Graham Cracker Crust
1 Cup Chocolate Chips
1 Cup Butterscotch Morsels
1 Cup Coconut
1 Cup Chopped Pecans
1 Cup White Karo Syrup
1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk

Use a 9X 13 buttered pan. Layer with grahm cracker crust, then the rest of the ingredients. It is important to use them in the order listed. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Run a spatula around the edge of the pan while it is still hot or it will stick. Let cool then cut into small squares.

--------------------

--------------------

I melted a package of vanilla almond bark in the microwave (followed timing directions on the back of the package). Then, I added in a cup of crushed candy canes. Pour onto a foil lined cookie sheet & let set til hardened. Then, break into pieces. It was so good! Thanks to whoever originally posted this idea!

--------------------

I only know of one recipe with Ritz crackers, and it's really good.
You buy the small peanut butter sandwich Ritz crackers and coat them in white chocolate or almond bark. You can sprinkle them with candy sprinkles on top if you like. It's another good combination of salty and sweet.
(Our Winn Dixie has almond bark, but it's not with the baking items this time of year. It's usually on an end cap.)
I follow the microwave directions for melting. You just have to do it for small amounts of time and stir well in between.

--------------------

Hello Dolly Cookies (more like dessert squares!)
1/2 c. butter
1 c. graham cracker crumbs (I sweeten these with 2 Tbs. conf. sugar)
1 can (1 1/3 c.) flaked coconut
12 oz. pkg. milk chocolate chips
1 c. broken pecans (optional)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (I use Eagle Brand.)

Melt butter in baking dish; cover with crumbs. Add chocolate chips, coconut, pecans. Pour condensed milk over all. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes. Cool. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Cut into squares. These keep well.

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but what is a "regular" size jar of peanut butter? I went to the store today and there are small, medium, large and extra large.

The more peanut butter, the better, in my opinion. Go extra large. :thumbsup2

Ok I just wanted to share with everyone who is doing all this great Holiday Cooking.... Dollar Tree has some big sized plastic Christmas containers with lids that would be great to package your goodies in... They are a little bigger then a gallon size ice cream container (the round ones) Thanks for all the ideas.... I think I might start baking some tonight...

Again how far in advance can some of these be made????

I just have to say a huge thanks! I made this over the weekend:

World's Easiest Peanut Butter Fudge....(and tastes great too!)

1 regular size container white cake frosting
1 regular size jar of peanut butter

Spoon contents of each container into a microwave safe large bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments until the mixture can be thoroughly mixed (it takes 2 - 30 second increments in my microwave) After mixing completely pour into a Pam sprayed glass 9X9-inch pan. Will harden completely in the refrigerator.

It was so incredibly easy. I used the crunchy pb, since DH loves it so well. Also used a 8x11 pan to pour it in. The entire thing was gobbled up by DH's coworkers in one day.

I also tried this one, but it never fully set up. Only about halfway, and even then, it was more like something I'd need a spoon to eat. Any tips or hints on that one? I used butterscotch chips, and walnut pieces to top it with.

Easiest ever fudge....
1 1/2 cups chocolate (or any other variety chips)
1 can carnation sweetened condensed milk.
Toppings if desired. (like nuts or candy pieces)

Stir together chips and milk on the stovetop until melted and glossy. Pour into an 8 by 8 or 9 by 9 pan. Top as desired. Chill until firm. Cut into squares.

These are terrific-- thanks so much! I have to bring a dessert to our potluck work party this weekend, and I hate baking, so I'm definitely planning on trying something from this thread! :thumbsup2

Here is an appetizer dish that's always been a huge hit at parties. Sounds gross, but try it!

Cool Veggie Pizza

3 crescent roll pkgs.
2 (8 oz.) cream cheese (softened)
1 pkg. Hidden Valley Ranch French Onion or reg. dip/dressing mix
1/2 c. mayonnaise
chopped raw vegetables of your choice (I use broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms)

--Spread the 3 crescent roll packages onto 2 cookie sheets (or pizza pan). Bake as directed and let cool.

--Mix 2 packages cream cheese, 1 package dry mix and the mayonnaise.

--After rolls have cooled, spread the dip on. Then place your chopped vegetables on top. Let sit in the refrigerator for about 1/2 hour. Cut into squares or slices. Serve cold.

I did these this weekend and they do taste like thin mints. Use a few drops of peppermint oil (not extract) and then I top that with a few peppermint crunchies.

I've also done it where you dip the crackers in chocolate, let them harden, then put them in layers, separated by waxed paper in an airtight container. Place a few drops of peppermint oil on cotton balls and place cotton balls between layers. Seal up container and let sit a few hours to a few days. It works too, but the mint flavor is not as intense.

The real question is "if you make them early, will you NOT eat them" :rotfl2: I made a huge tray of the pretzels (see pic above) and they were done within 2 days. Cannot, Cannot do early in this house as DH & kids will wipe them out!!! As long as you seal stuff in a airtight container you could do them a week or so in advance with pretzels. Candy even 2-3 weeks early and they will hold up fine.

I have found the decorated cello bags at our local Dollar Tree store. I got 20 bags for $1. They were 5 1/2" x 10" size with snowmen.

Even better than the dollar store, try your local grocery or bulk food store. I was able to get 100 large, clear cello bags for a couple dollars. Best thing is they have any size you could possibly want.

Barefoot Contessa Truffles..
(This recipe is so easy, I whipped it up after watching the show once)
1 cup Heavy Cream, 2 cups chopped chocolate (or chocolate chips)
1 teaspoon flavoring, such as vanilla, almond, brandy, etc (she uses grand marnier)
Stuff to roll these in, like chopped nuts, sprinkles, cookie crumbs, powdered sugar or cocoa.

1.Mix the first three ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stir until melted (do not boil).
2.Pour into any freezer safe container- tupperwear, baking pan, etc. Freeze for 2-4 hours or until about the consistency of playdough.
3.Use a small ice cream scoop or tablespoon to scoop this out. Roll into balls with your hands, Roll in toppings.
4. Store in the fridge. (Although these can be set out at room tempeture for serving or giving)

YUMMY!

LOL about Neiman Marcus. Along the same line, at Linens N Things yesterday, I saw a 4 pack of hot cocoa spoons for $5. Basically, just gold plastic spoons dipped in chocolate with some mini marshmallows stuck in the melted chocolate. Then it was just wrapped in cellophane and tied with gold curling ribbon. Such a ripoff but you know people will buy it!

Great thread...here's my contribution:

The Best Damn Hot Chocolate Ever

1 qt. whole milk
1 at. half & half
1 lb. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/3 c. packed dark brown sugar
2 (4-inch) strips of fresh orange zest
2 or 3 cinnamon sticks
1 T. instant coffee crystals
whipped cream
peppermint sticks
mini marshmallows
chocolate sprinkles

In a large saucepan, combine milk, half & half, chocolate chips, brown sugar, orange zest, cinnamon sticks, and coffee crystals. Simmer over medium-low heat, whisking frequently until chocolate is melted (about half an hour or so). It's done! If you're not serving it immediately, pour it into a crock pot set on low. Ladle into pretty mugs and garnish with marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, and peppermint sticks. (This is completely optional, but I usually set out the Kaluah and Bailey's so that my guests can add either of them to their own cups.)

I could have sworn I posted this recipe last year, but I didn't see it as I was browsing. If you like peppermint bark, you'll LOVE this recipe! They're also very pretty if you're giving them as gifts.

Christmas Minties

12 peppermint candies
12 double graham crackers
6 squares white almond bark
½ teaspoon peppermint extract
¼ teaspoon green food coloring
2 squares chocolate almond bark
1 square white almond bark

Crush peppermint candies in Ziploc bag. Lay graham crackers, top
side down, into a greased foil lined jelly roll pan, to fit in single
layer.
Melt 6 squares of white almond bark in the microwave on low heat
until smooth. Mix in green food coloring and peppermint extract.
Pour over crackers and spread evenly. Melt 2 squares of chocolate
almond bark, place in Ziploc and drizzle in vertical lines over
crackers. Melt 1 square of white almond bark and drizzle over
crackers. Use a toothpick to swirl chocolate and white chocolate
drizzles into a marbleized pattern. Sprinkle with crushed
peppermint candies. Chill for about 15 minutes or until firm.
Break into irregular pieces.

Chocolate covered cherry mice

These are easy and fun to make.

1 jar maraschino cherries with stems, drained and dried
6 ounces semisweet chocolate
36 Hershey kisses
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1 tube red (clear) gel icing
Chocolate jimmies

Line a cookie sheet with waxed or parchment paper.

Rinse the maraschino cherries, drain thoroughly, and let dry on paper towels, turning often.
The cherries must be completely dry or the chocolate will seize and get crumbly.

Gently melt chocolate in the microwave for approx. 2 minutes. Stirring every 30 seconds until completely melted.

Dip dry cherries in melted chocolate to completely cover up to the stem. Place on lined cookie sheet. Immediately press on Hershey kiss, flat side to the front of the dipped cherry, to form a head.

Allow to harden in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Chocolate should still be soft but not melted or the ears will slip. Then, wedge two sliced almonds between Hershey kiss and cherry to form ears. Let cool.

Use a toothpick to dab beady red eyes on either side of the Hershey kiss with the red gel icing.

Refrigerate to firmly set chocolate.

Sprinkle chocolate jimmies on serving platter to resemble mouse droppings.

Yield: about 36 chocolate-covered mice

I have pictures that I will post as soon as I find them.

ETA: The only photo I had was a butt shot. But, I think you get the idea.

what is a jelly roll pan??
Rectangular pan (13 x 9, 18 x 15, etc) about a half inch deep. Primary purpose is to bake a thin sponge-cake-like cake (or similar) that can then be spread with a variety of foods and, well, rolled up and cut into pinwheels.

Amazon's got a bunch of them, if you want to just take a look.

If you're asking because of the recipe I posted, you can use a regular cookie sheet. The size of the jelly roll pan just helps hold the graham crackers in place easier when you spread the almond bark on.

This may have already been said, but this is a super easy "truffle" type recipe:

Crush 1 pkg oreos (or the cheap brand of oreos)
Mix with 1 pkg cream cheese
Roll into marble sized balls. Chill for about 1 hour.
Dip in almond bark (I used white, then sprinkled with choc. in a zip lock bag for a nice look).

I'm bringing these to a Christmas cookie/candy exchange tomorrow night. They were really easy, but taste very very good! Also, I was thinking (but have not tried) that you could use the cheap peanut butter cookies or other flavors too.

Last year I was going to make a recipe I found on the Dis, but never got around to it. I thought it was on this thread, but now I can't find it. I think it had graham crackers, and I know it had crushed Heath bars on top. Does anyone have any idea what I might be thinking of?

Is this the recipe your thinking of:
Almond toffe squares:
12 whole graham crackers
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
Assorted nuts and/or chocolate chips as desired

Preheat oven to 400
Line a cookie sheet with foil and lay out graham crackers on top
Stir together butter and brown sugar on the stovetop until boiling. Boil 1 minute.
Pour butter mixture over graham crackers. Put in the oven
Bake 3-6 minutes until bubbly.
Remove from oven. Cool slightly. Spinke on toppings as desired (I used crushed pecans, semi-sweet chocolate chips and heath brickle bits.
Cool completely. Breal each cracker into 4 sections.
Makes 48 squares.(rectangles)

I can't remember who OP was but I pasted it to a Word document cause it looked so good.

Anyway -- after silently reading everyone's wonderful recipes and copying them and probably gaining weight just by thinking of making these goodies -- here is an appetizer that is easy, elegant and always gets rave reviews:

Brown Sugar Brie

1 whole baby brie
1 can crescent rolls
brown sugar
walnuts

roll out crescent roll dough. Place baby brie on dough. Sprinkle GENEROUSLY with brown sugar and walnuts. Wrap brie in dough. Brush with egg wash. Put in fridge for 30 minutes. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until golden brown.

I served this with apple and pear slices and crackers -- -wonderful!!

I saw that earlier, but I skimmed the list of ingredients and when I didn't see the Heath I skipped over it. Thank you!

Your brie sounds delicious! I think I'll be adding this to our Christmas Eve menu.

:confused3 Last night I made pretzel wreaths and the kisses didn't soften that much. The only thing I could think of that I did wrong was that I used the milk chocolate kisses instead of the hug kisses. I put them in the oven for 5 mins. Then I got them out and tried to put a M&M on them and the kiss cracked. I did preheat the oven. I was so upset that they didn't melt. I was looking forward to them so much! What did I do wrong?

I make a similar treat, but the instructions are a little bit different. You might try it next time. I haven't had any problems with the kisses cracking (it does say the white chocolate will melt more quickly).

Bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels
Hershey's Kiss or Hershey's Hug
M&M's candy

Step 1
Heat the oven to 170º. Set a number of bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels (one for each treat) in a
single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, then top each pretzel with an
unwrapped Hershey's Kiss or Hershey's Hug.

Step 2
Bake for 4 to 6 minutes (the white chocolate will melt more quickly), until the chocolates feel soft
when touched with a wooden spoon. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and quickly press an
M&M's candy into the center of each Kiss.

Step 3
Allow the treats to cool for a few minutes, then place them in the refrigerator to set, about 10
minutes. Place handfuls of the candies in clear plastic bags and tie on colorful ribbons.

I did them with the chocolate wafers I bought at Michaels/AC Moore and they melted super quick - 2 maybe 3 minutes. I think the kisses would take longer just because they are denser - maybe 7-8 minutes or so.

I had the same problem, however when I used the candy cane kisses they came out great! I wonder if its something with the plain chocolate kisses??
Mine cracked and the chocolate was so terrible tasting i threw them all away. Its almost like they were dry. When I make more i will use the hugs instead.

A friend i know makes those and they are delicious. I found a similar recipe on family fun and it was for a bark recipe. It is so simple and quick. Line a pan with waxed paper. Spray non stick cooking spray. Break 20 oreos or another similar chocolate cookie into small pieces. Microwave 2 2/3 cup of white chocolate until softened. I used almond bark since i had it to make oreo balls. Stir in a tsp of vanilla and also the cookies. Once mixed, pour into the pan. I ended up taking another peice of waxed paper and flatteneing it. Put it in the refrigerator for about an hour until hardens. Cut into triangles or just break them off into pieces as I did. I put them out for my guests and they loved it.

I made the pretzel wreaths today with Hershey's candy cane kisses. They turned out so cute with the red stripes, plus they are yummy! Very easy treat!

However, I attempted the easy turtles with pecan halves, caramel and kisses. Those certainly aren't easy! The melted caramel stuck to everything. With my last batch, I sprayed the cookie sheet with Pam and I also sprayed my knife before I squished the caramel. That helped a lot. But I don't think I will make those again.

I also made the peanut butter cookies with the peanut butter cup in them. Those turned out incredible! I used mini cupcake wrappers and I rolled the Pillsbury peanut butter into one inch balls (well, I had my boys do that!) I baked them for about 9 minutes at 350 degrees. When they came out, I immediately put the peanut butter cup in them then put the whole pan in the freezer for about 10 minutes. To get the cups out of the pan, I used a clean tweezer and it worked like a charm. YUM YUM YUM!

Easy chocoate and butterscotch candy

Spray pan with pam. Larger pan makes thinner candies. Melt one bag of butterscotch chips with a tablespoon of butter and spread over bottom of pan. Immediately press miniature marshmallows on the butterscotch layer. Melt I bag of chocolate chips with 1 Tablespoon butter and spread over. Cool and cut. I usually make it without the butter.

I made a few things last night....choc. pretzel rods which I covered with crushed Heath bars, then drizzled w/ red then white Wilton's candy melts, the choc. cherries posted here, which took a while but I hope they will be good!!

Then, I also dipped some peppermint sticks. Found them in Walmart holiday candy aisle. They are soft, not like candy canes. Dipped about 1/2 into some chocolate, and put some gingerbread men sprinkles on top. I'm going to use those as "stirrers" with a gift of hot chocolate. Though DD just grabbed one & started munching away..... :teeth:

Also dipped some Oreos. I put those in milk chocolate, dipped about halfway, then put mini M&M's for color. After it set a minute, I drizzled white chocolate on top.

Tonight I'm making filled oatmeal raisin cookies, and who knows what else.

I've been using the Ghirardelli candy chocolate too! I got several huge blocks of it at Sam's.

I noticed that the white chocolate especially tended to be a bit runny so I started letting it sit for a few minutes to cool off and thicken up before I dipped things into it. That seemed to work a lot better

I made this the other night - yummy  I just took the Wiltons Wafers - white chocolate melted - poured onto wax/parchment paper lined cookie sheet and spread/sprinkled the crushed oreos on top of them - when I tried to mix it into the chocolate the oreas were running and changing the color of the chocolate due to fine crumbs so I just sprinkled on top of the melted chocolate and used a spatula to press them into it.

Hi! Just wanted to say that I made these tonight! Wow are they awesome! :woohoo:

I have never made anything quite like these. I was leary of the chow mein noodles..but the recipe is heavenly.

I used the microwave directions...SO easy! I stuck them in the fridge & they hardened up great.

Thanks, I have enjoyed this thread so much! :sunny:

ETA: These are called BUTTERSCOTCH HAYSTACKS

I made these tonight too. They are in the fridge now. Thanks for giving me the name of the cookies, because I'm taking them to work tomorrow and I didn't know what they were called. Do you think they will transport okay? Will they stay together? I was leary when I saw the concoction, but I'm encouraged by your review.

Wish me luck

Im going to start my baking tomorrow and one of the treat is the peppermint bark -

now is the almond bark the same or close to white chocolate--I know people in different parts of the country call things by differnet names.

heres a good example--

has anyone heard of a bubbler?!!!!

in most parts of the country its called a drinking fountain

you should see the funny looks we get as we travel and ask where the bubbler is? :rotfl2:

I used the Wiltons melting wafers - white chocolate ones to make the peppermint bark.

And yes I to know what a bubbler is ;) A water fountain is one of those things in the middle of the world showcase that spits water in the air, not something you drink out of in this neck of the woods :thumbsup2 I like the all the names for soda, tonic, pop, cola, etc.

How early can you make the chocolate covered treats/ like popcorn, pretzels and cookies (even the chips)?? If you don't eat them will they be okay for Christmas or get mushy, etc.

Just wondering

If I'm remembering correctly, I made the popcorn 3 or 4 days ahead. I don't
recommend this for the chips.

Dip them!! :thumbsup2 I've got to take some pictures - but I used the chocolate filled Oreos, dipped about halfway in chocolate, then sprinkled 4 mini M&M's on top, let set for a minute. Then followed up with some white chocolate drizzles on top of it all. They look really neat! Quick & easy too, which is a big plus for me this time of year.

Well I'm a little worried about the Butterscotch Haystacks. We are having a dessert buffet here at work and I don't think anyone has tried one. They really don't look very good. They are an unusual color and I don't think anyone is brave enough to try one. They taste much better than they look.

More pictures of treats from this thread!
Pretzel rods - melted chocolate & white chocolate Wilton Wafers - dipped & drizzled

Pretzel rods - melted chocolate Wilton Wafers then dipped, rolled into sprinkles or heath pieces

Marshmallow Smores - melted chocolate wafers, dipped marshmallows into crushed graham crackers

Oreo Cookie Bark & Peppermint Bark - melted white chocolate wafers and added crushed oreos in 1 and peppermint pieces into other *I did not mix in pieces of candy/cookie as when I started to do this the additions were running and just coloring the chocolate so I spread chocolate onto parchment covered cookie sheet and sprinkled topping on top of melted chocolate.

And I filled the middle with PB Hershey Kisses!

What a great thread!! The recipe I have to
share is very good, although you'll probably
need an extra pair of hands to help.

Chocolate Bugle Dips

Bag of original flavored bugles
Peanut Butter
Any type of chocolate melted

Fill each end of the bugle with peanut butter
then dip only the peanut butter filled end
in chocolate, leaving the tip of the bugle
uncovered ( gives you something to hold onto)
Set on wax paper to dry
Another great mix of sweet & salty!

WOW I have had busy couple days... Here is what I have bakes so far.....
Night 1:
Pretzals with kiss and M&M.... Used the hugs candy cane kiss... YUM
Smores: Marshmellow rolled in choc and then rolled in graham crackers.. This was ok in my book but not WOW
Night 2:
Cream Cheese Mints: Not easy to make... And I used peppermint oil and WOW they are soooo stong with peppermint you can barley eat them... I did a second batch without the peppermint oil and they were ok... Scale of 1-5, they are a 2..
Dipped Pretzal Rods: I rolled in white choc and then in Heath bars then dizzled with choc peanut butter... YUM 10++ ...... Then I rolled some in crushed peppermints and dizzled with milk choc... YUM 9+ .... Last I tried to roll in Christmas Nerds.... Did not work out so well... The Nerds were to heavy I think... But they were good...... I also did some reg. pretzals with the left overs..
Assorted Barks... One with white choc and peppermints... YUM but I made these a little thick.... Then... BEST OF ALL.... I did white choc with Peppermints, Christmas Nerds and Topped with M&M's... I called it Candy Bark... It was GOOD!!!!
Now all I have left to do is the white trash, choc popcorn and sugar cookies... ANd maybe some peanut butter ones too..

To whoever posted the microwave peanut brittle recipe: YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!!! I have wanted to make peanut brittle for years, as that's a childhood memory of mine. My grandmother would spend an entire day over the stove making batch after batch of the stuff. I could never master her technique, so gave up. I tried the microwave recipe yesterday, and it was so easy! DH says it tastes just as good as Grandma's so that's a plus, too! I made 3 batches yesterday to take to a bowling Christmas party, and it was all gone by the time the party was over! I'm making more today for gifts for my neighbors! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Okay. Has anyone tried the new cherry cordial Hershey Kisses??? These are fantastic. If you have had the caramel filled ones, they are like that but with a little bit of cherry and the coridial liquid. I have no idea where she got them, though. They are so new I can't even find them on their website. It probably helps that she lives in Hershey.

Trust me, it helps that she lives in Hershey. We get all of the test candies and pre-releases. Shame, I know

I made these for my DS preschool Christmas party (recipe courtesy of Family Fun Magazine.) He was able to help me and he loved that he was able to make something for his class.

Sugar Plums
1 pkg melting candy (found in candy making aisle of craft store)
1 10oz pkg of large marshmallows
36 craft sticks
sprinkles (we used multi-colored)
Lollipop wraps (also sold with the candy making items)
colorful ribbon

Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Melt bag of candy using bag instructions. While I was melting the candy, my DS(3) put the craft sticks in each marshmallow. Once melted, dip the marshmallow in the candy and then immediately dip into sprinkles. Once all marshmallows are dipped, place in freezer for 15 min. After freezer, wrap each sugarplum with saran wrap (I prefer the lollipop covers) and then tie with curling ribbon or twist tie. Store in air tight container for up to 5 days.

They taste pretty good and look very festive!! They were a hit in my son's class.

I haven't seen these on this thread, so I apologize if they've already been posted. Made them this morning... yummy!

Cake Balls

1 package cake mix
1 container frosting
1 package almond bark

1. Prepare cake mix as directed. Let cool.
2. Crumble cake into large bowl.
3. Add 1/3-1/2 can of frosting. Stir until a dough forms. (I used my hands. It was quicker and I didn't have cake flying everywhere.)
4. Form into balls. (I used a 1 tbsp measuring spoon to scoop the "dough" and then formed the ball with my hands.)
5. Place in freezer for a few minutes to harden.
6. Melt almond bark according to package directions.
7. Dip cake balls into melted almond bark.
8. Sprinkle top with decorations.

You can use any combo of flavors. I did chocolate cake, chocolate frosting and chocolate coating. Some do red velvet cake, cream cheese frosting and white almond bark. Decoration on top can be sprinkles, or crushed candy canes, or whatever makes you happy.

For the "puppy Chow" recipe, DS is allergic to Peanut Butter, so I substitute the "Chocolate Hazelnut" spread - YUM (called Nuttello, he's not allergic to hazelnuts btw)

Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow

9 C. Chex cereal (rice ones are best for this recipe)
1 C. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 C. creamy peanut butter
1/4 C. margarine
1/4 t. vanilla
1 1/2 C. confectioner's (powdered) sugar

Put the powdered sugar in a plastic bag or big bowl with lid and set aside. Melt choc chips, peanut butter & margarine in microwave. Add vanilla & mix thoroughly and then stir in cereal until coated. Work quickly - before the mixture cools off too much! Add the chocolate coated cereal to the bag/bowl of powdered sugar and shake until all pieces are coated with sugar. Dump/spread out onto a baking sheet and allow to cool/set. Store in air-tight container.

Yet another Fruit Dip -
1 pkg cream cheese room temp
Brown Sugar (I eye ball it, maybe 1/4C to 1/2 Cup)

combine, then put in frig for a bit to harden back up - with strawberries, its omg delicious!!

Easy Tortilla Chip Dip
1 pkg Cream Cheese room temp
1 can salsa (or jar, or store made salsa)

combine - it turns a pretty pink color, you can use a hotter salsa as the cream cheese cuts the heat, we use mild salsa, and virtually no heat so we serve jalepenos on the side!!

eeyore45
12-18-2006, 01:18 PM
tried to edit post, wouldnt work!!

For the Brown Sugar Fruit dip, the consistency is really creamy sticky...

for the Salsa Cream Cheese - that one if you can hold off till it firms back up in the fridge the flavors do "marry" and it does get a bit firm!!

This stuff is awesome and easy!

8 ounces crab or imitation crab meat.
8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
2 small green onions diced (use stems too)
2-3 tablespoons lemon juice
2-3 tanblespoons favorite BBQ sauce.

Blend all together with electric mixer. Serve with crackers or spread on soft tortilla shell and slice for easy appetizers.

turned out great!!!

I made the toffee crackers and they really are fantastic!!!

I had my doubts when I had to cover the crackers with the butter/sugar
mixture some of the crackers were floating on the cookie sheet!!!!

but I thought lets just see what happens so I baked them and that really smelled good!!!

when I took them out the mixture sort of gels so I melted the chocolate to pour over let harden and its great!!!!

The pepperment bark is also very good

there still a few more things Id like to try yet

this has been the best idea!!

easy way to melt chocolate is put it in a baking dish in a 250 oven stirring
often melts fast and is very smooth and easy to work with

Okay, I tried making the White Chocolate Popcorn today, adding the Symphony bar drizzled over the top. It tasted great, but the milk chocolate of the bar didn't harden up and it was pretty messy. Not gift giving material...darn the bad luck, we had to eat it! :rotfl: But, the "confectionery coating" did harden and tasted great anyway, so I may just use that on another batch and see what happens. I also might try another batch using the milk choc. drizzle and see if I can cool it enough to get it to set...

The bottom line is I don't want to mess with the tempering technique since it sounds too complicated. Do most of you have luck with just melting chocolate chips and dipping the pretzel rods, etc. without tempering the chocolate? Thanks for any info... :sunny:

I have bought BAGS of the Wilton wafers at Michaels/AC Moores and I put them in a bowl, microwave in 30 second intervals (usually takes 2x in my microwave), stirring in between each 30 seconds, and they are ready to dip. NO tempering, no fuss, no burning the chocolate and RAVE reviews!!! I have done this with White & Milk Chocolate Wafers. I too was worried about setting and burning and messing them up but I dip in one chocolate & drizzle with alternate colored chocolate - I thought they came out classier looking than the sprinkle, heath ones.

I also used the same wafers in all the recipes pictured herehttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y7/ffmickey/Smiley%20Faces/Daily%20jobs/cookingdinnersmiley.gif

I have some almond bark at home, I'll try and remember to shoot a picture of it so everyone knows what's being talked about.

Here's another cute little recipe my mom used to make:

Hamburgers:
Vanilla Wafers
frosting
small Peppermint patties
coconut
Green food coloring

Coloring some coconut with the green food coloring.
Frost the undersides of 2 vanilla wafers, layer on one peppermint patty and coconut, place the other vanilla wafer on top to make a miniature hamburger.

Here's another off of the Old Dutch Puffcorn bag that we like (we make with the puffcorn):

OLD DUTCH CARAMEL CORN

1 (8 oz.) bag "Old Dutch Puff Corn Curls" or popcorn

Place Corn Curls in large roaster pan.

CARAMEL SAUCE:

In a 2-quart saucepan cook together for 2 minutes:

1/2 lb. butter
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. light corn syrup

Add 1 teaspoon baking soda to mixture. This will cause mixture to foam, so 2-quart saucepan is necessary.
Pour caramel mixture over corn curls and stir until mixed. Place in 250 degree oven for 45 minutes. Stir at least every 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and pour on wax paper and BREAK apart. Enjoy!!

I laid it on top of the chocolate: melt white chocolate and pour onto parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Crush oreo cookies (I found mini ones crushed really easily) Sprinkle over white chocolate. I took a spatula and pressed cookie into chocolate to make sure it stuck into it vs. laying on top. When I had tried to mix the cookies in they were running with the chocolate and turning the white brown/black :crazy2: So tried it this way and it came out really well. Let set/cool/harden & break into pieces.

How do you make the marshmallow things?

Thanks to everyone posting recipes! I tried the white chocolate popcorn last night, and I have a question. I coated the popcorn well with the almond bark, and then drizzled melted pb/choc swirl chips over the top. It set up fine. While I love the way it tastes, did anyone else find the popcorn underneath a bit soggy? Could it have been the type of microwave popcorn I used maybe (Orville-move theatre butter-not the pour over butter kind, just the regular?)

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to everyone!!

How do you make the marshmallow things?

If you are referring to the ones in my picture....melt chocolate wilton wafers - crush graham crackers - dip marshmallow into chocolate and then graham cracker crumbs. Put onto wax paper/parchment paper and let set. Easy & delicious! I was surprised at how many adults loved this one!

when I make the chocolate-covered popcorn, I use natural popcorn and let it set up on waxed paper. I don't think I've ever had a batch turn out soggy.

Mine didn't turn out soggy either. Did you let the popcorn cool completely before you coated it with the chocolate?

Last Thursday I made several of the treats I had read about on here. The Thin Mints, the Ritz/Peanut Butter sandwiches dipped in chocolate, and my own version of the white chocolate popcorn. Instead of coating it, I just drizzled the white and milk over it. I also added peanuts to the mixture. I loved it! Except that what wasn't covered with chocolate got a little stale/chewy after a day or so. Definitely buy the butter popcorn (I got Act II which was great). It was all great!

Thanks for the thread and recipes!

Did you take it out of the bag right away & let it sit for a couple of minutes before pouring on the white chocolate? It might have developed steam in the bag, then being hit with the chocolate too soon, didn't give the popcorn a chance to breathe.

I got the Act II butter popcorn too. Didn't sog.

I let the steam escape and let it cool down, but I might try again with another batch. I can see tons of yummy variations on this. I'll add nuts, too. I think mine needed a bit more "salty" in the mix.

Yesterday at Cost Plus World Market I found "Holiday Pretzels"--$4.99 for a large plastic container. The pretzels are shaped like trees, bells and stars. I dipped some last night in both white and dark chocolate. They're really cute! :goodvibes

Have you tried with Margarine. My DS has a dairy allergy and would love to try this one.

Thanks

Here is a favorite

Toffee
1 cup pecans, chopped
3/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup butter
1/2 package of chocolate chips

Butter a square pan (9x9) Spread pecans in bottom of pan. Heat butter and sugar to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil over medium heat, stirring constantly, 7 minutes. Immediately spread mixture evenly over nuts in pan.

Sprinkle chocolate chips over hot mixture. Place baking sheet over the pan so contained heat will melt chocolate. Spread melted chocolate over candy. While hot cut into pieces. Chill until firm.

I just got done making the pretzel wreaths, the butterscotch crunchies, and the ritz pb sandwiches dipped in white choc. almond bark. I made them for my husbands work party this Friday. I still plan on making peppermint bark and buckeyes also. All of these are sitting in my fridge and I can't wait to try them! Anyone try the butterscotch crunchies yet? They look and smell so good!

I was shopping & found this wonderful variation on Chocolate Covered Apples. They were just individually placed on cellophane wrap, bundled up with the long cellophane ends spilling upwards & tied with a pretty bow on top. They look so festive! :thumbsup2

It's similar to the chocolate covered pretzels with toppings. So if you are doing them, you might as well cover apples too! There is also a covered Bosc pear below. I don't see why this idea can't be done to frozen chocolate covered bananas on a stick. :cool1:

the recipe I use calls for the white bark, with a spoonful of peanut putter mixed in. I also add a couple of handfuls of roasted peanuts to the mix. :)

I'm sure it will be great with the chips, too!

I just found a pic of some peppermint bark. Looks yummy!

It's from Martha Stewart. She added peppermint oil into the melted white chocolate.

To everyone who's posted those great ideas....THANK YOU!!!!! :grouphug:

I'm about to wrap up my Christmas goodie making...only 1 thing left and I've gotta say thanks! :goodvibes I'm so looking forward to all the family...it's gonna be the first time in many years that we've all been together so I went a little crazy in the goodies department...even made a deal with my sister...I'll do all the candy stuff and she can do the cookies. :smooth:

So far I've made...

Chocolate covered pretzels, white and milk chocolate, sprinkled and non-sprinkled
Chocolate covered marshmallows, white and milk chocolate, sprinkles too and non-sprinkled
Quick Smores
Quick Turtles
Chocolate covered ginger snap cookies (had some extra chocolate to use, but they look really nice)
Mint Meltaways
Oreo Truffles, dipped in white and milk chocolate
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles (white and milk chocolate dipped)
Heavenly Hash (cherry, pecan & coconut truffle)
Peppermint Bark
Maple Fudge with pecans
Peanut Butter Fudge
Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge
Orange Slice Cake (it's not quick...takes 3 hours to bake and it's in the oven now...it's like a fruitcake without the liquor or dried fruit)
and if the humidity will go down (93% today)...I'm suppose to make divinity

Okay, like many here I was highly skeptical of that peanut butter fudge recipe....1 can of vanilla frosting to 1 jar of peanut butter...but OMG! It is fantastic! It's very smooth and not as hard as some other fudges...I made it with chocolate chips added and it was a bit harder, but tasty! Next time I'm gonna use a can of chocolate frosting instead of vanilla...think it'd work better.

The turtles...had those before, but so YUMMY!
Smores...my personal favorite dessert from 50s Prime Time...so thanks!!!

The Heavenly Hash and Orange Slice Cake are from my collection at home...I'll post the recipes next in separate posts.

So, with sis's additions...sugar cookies, chocolate fudge, peanut butter kisses cookies, and a couple of others she told me and I can't remember...think we've got the family covered. Matter of fact, my oldest nephew who's in the marines flew in today and we told him what we had...he said, "i'm gonna be on such a sugar high, I'll be able to fly myself back without a plane." Gwarsh!

So, again...THANKS! :grouphug:

Heavenly Hash (this is a good Valentine's candy, too)

2 lbs. confectioner's sugar
2 1/2 sticks butter, softened
1 1/2 c. pecans, chopped
1 c. coconut flakes
1 jar marachino cherries, drained (not the smallest size...16oz. is it I think)

chocolate for dipping...I prefer to use the Ghirardelli chocolate that I can get at Sam's Club, 2.5lbs. blocks, but only need about a pound, but any kind will do...if you use almond bark add 1T. crisco to the chocolate to keep it smooth

Cut the cherries into small pieces (diced is about right).
Soften butter, mix with confectioner's sugar. Add cherries, coconut, and pecans. Mix well. (Should have a nice pink cast to it.) Roll into balls (about the size of a cherry) and allow to firm up in fridge.

Melt chocolate. (I use a make shift double boiler...a saucepan with water simmering and a glass pyrex bowl sitting on top of it.)

Dip each piece of candy in the chocolate and allow to harden in fridge.

***I make a half batch and get about 50 - 60 pieces. I use the smallest (8oz.) jar of marichino cherries and about half pound of chocolate.

Orange Slice Cake (or what I call...Ain't Your Grandma's Fruitcake)

1c. butter or margarine
1/2 c. buttermilk
3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. nuts, chopped (I prefer pecans)
1 lb. bag of orange slice candy
2 c. granulated sugar
4 eggs
1 package of dates or raisins (about 1c.)
1 can coconut
1tsp. baking soda

Pepare fruit, candy, and nuts by chopping finely and rolling in 1/2 cup of the flour.
Cream butter and sugar. Add 1 egg at a time, blending well after each addition.
Add buttermilk and blend well.
Sift remaining flour and baking soda and add to mixture.
Fold in nuts, dates/raisins, orange slices, and coconut.

Pour batter into a greased tube pan. **batter will be very thick!

Bake at 250 degrees for 3 hours.

Leave cake in pan. While still hot glaze with the following mixture. (It helps to poke holes in the cake with a fork to allow glaze to get inside.)

2c. confectioners sugar
1c. orange juice

This is a great alternative to traditional fruitcake and it's a huge cake!

Too late for this christmas, but...

my boys and I made mock turtles. Take a bag of mini pretzels, lay them out on a baking sheet. Top each one with a Rolo candy; heat in the oven @ 200 degrees until they just start to get soft, you can tell they're ready when the tops start to look shiny. Pull out of the oven and smoosh the Rolo down with a pecan half. Yummy! My family gobbled these up!
