It’s all about the jewelry!

I have been talked into participating by Liz and we figured maybe someone else might be in the mood to try this event with us. :teeth:

This is a 4 hour half marathon event which translates into an 18-minute mile. Walkers, joggers, woggers, runners. Everyone can do this!

Join us!

I figured it is time to change up to a "trainig for" thread.
Still looking for participants to join up with us!

Great idea, Lilly!

I'd love to join you but I am already signed up for the "Run to Remember" half in Boston on March 11. Plus, I can't afford to travel again for a long time!!!!! We definitely need to keep the running/walking club going to get us through the post-race blues!

I'm signed up for the Minnie Marathon in May...and sometime in the next 18 months we're planning on baby #3. But these darn races--I just can't stop! ;).

I will be there with bells on....OK, maybe not bells....but a little cool max, sausage pants, some well worn running shoes and my thorlo sox! Guess I need to get some new shoes and start putting those steps in!!

And Lily, I will let you when I am all signed up and new shoed!! :rotfl:

Who else will join us?

Ohhh, I am so disappointed. I was actually trying to figure out if there was anyway I could do this (good almost half-way point between WDW 1/2 and DL 1/2), when I realized that is the weekend DD17's marching band is performing at WDW. HAVE to see that dream come true!

I'm with Sunny. I too will be doing the Boston Run to Remember half in March. There is a 10 miler here in ME Feb 5th called the MidWinter Classic that I'm planning on also in addition to the Women Run the World 15 K. Can you tell that I was worried about keeping up with the running between the marathon and triathlon season? I really need races as a focus to keep at it.

After the marathon, my training will switch to be triathlon oriented but since my 2 big goal races this year are a half ironman at the World and a Sept ironman I figure my run mileage and overall endurance will be adequate to finish a half/15 K/10 mi without the swim/bike warmup.

If I could spring the airfare, I'd go do the 50K trail run that MelR keeps dropping hints about but alas... too expensive

Hi Lily
I will be looking for you at the WDW Marathon since you convinced me that I could do it even before my first 10k. This is Angie from Cleveland Fit. The Columbus 1/2 sounds interesting. I'll look into it. See you in the World. Staying at the Poly.

Oh, this sounds like a pace I could do! I'll have to see how finances are, though. Did you know that a new house just eats up money? No promises, but I will think about it if for no other reason than the great company!

I am reading about you guys having some fun - not ready to commit to this today (my "other" leg is now bothering me) but I will definately consider.

I was thinking I could be your cheering section - then I am thinking mmmmm....not sure I could just be on the sidelines :teeth:

Let's do spread the word for a WISH event with the Penquin!

I do remember so well the weather last year when Molli completed this race in horrific weather and she had been "down" 2 days with the flu. Can't be like that 2 years in a row, can it? Nah - this year, I bet it is a balmy spring-like day with WISHer's smiling and having a good ol' time!

Marking my calendar and seeing if it will work for me, too!

I would love to do another half with everyone, but I'm already planning on doing the Flying Pig in Cincinnati in May. If anyone's interested, it's a half and full marathon on Sunday, May 7 (unfornately the same weekend as the Minnie Marathon). I haven't run it before, but I know people who have and they say it's a great race, running through the streets of downtown Cincinnati, it was also voted one of the top 25 fun marathons by Runner's World. Here's the web page if anyone wants to look into it some more, www.flyingpigmarathon.com.

OK, Chimera, I'm thinking about that one. I want to see what happens with my knee first, though. I go back to the DR Jan 10 and if I need any "repairs" that will have to take priority. Even if I do not do the half, there is a 5K and a 1 mile run/walk the day before the half that I could probably do. If I read the pacing requirements correctly, I think it said 6 hrs. I can do that no problem so I'd love to try. Hope it works out.

It is an 18 min mile. You are within the time for starting up and managing to finish. We would be pleased to walk with you.

Does this mean you are planning to go to WDW with the 2007 group?
Or, on the Sept half event in Rocky River or the October Columbus, or where? I see we live pretty close. I do most of my training on the Tow Path.

ok liz, i saw on the other thread you are on week 4 of MFM training :) yeaa!!!!

now, refresh my memory, do you have a penguin medal? you did the Chicago last year right?

I was telling my 'fitness pro' at my fitness center about MFM and she didnt' know who John Bingham was! for shame! kinda got me all pumped up! i've been TM at the fitness center anywhere from 2-3 miles on a normal day, feel like it's time to start incorporating long days. what distance are you at for your long day?

are you all planning on getting a hotel friday night? let's meet for lunch friday at spaghetti warehouse for pasta! i have debated on pricelining a hotel for saturday so the family could join in and we could make a day of it, but then there would be that 3 hour wait for check-in after the race...........what are you all planning to do???

is it just Lily, Liz and me???

lizdotcom99
01-12-2006, 08:25 AM
Molly,

Lily got a room that we are going to share......you are more than welcome to stay with us if you would like! Lily won't mind :teeth:

I think another DISer might be going us for the walk, Believe is her screen name and her real name Amanda. She walk with me and Lily last year for the Chicago Distance Classic where we all got our Penguin mdeals ::yes:: I am also working on getting Cam to join us as well and maybe even Towncrier!

Now mind you, I walk slow....real slow...it will most likely take me all 4 hours to complete this race....well if you want to call that a race :rotfl2:

I think the plan for me is to either fly or drive to Cleavland and get Lily, then head to Columbus for the day on Friday. Not sure what Satuday holds for us, since we did get the room for only one night. We do have a DIS friend that lives in Columbus though and offered that we could shower at her house after the race.... :flower3:

Anyway, those are about as definate as my plans get. I am all about doing lunch, or dinner depending on what time we get in. From what I understand, it is about 2 hours from Lily's to Columbus. If I drive, I may end up leaving Thursday after work and getting to Lily's that evening so we can get an early start Friday morning. If I fly, there are a few early flights too!! When we get some more definate ideas, I will let you know what is going on...but we are definately gonna see you there! I can't wait! It will be a blast. We had such a good time doing the Chicago thing.......and we are planning on doing it again....Come see the windy city, I will have a room ready and waiting for you!! ::yes::

Forgot to add, my long walk this weekend is 5 miles....3 miles next week and 6 the week after! THese ones are still doable and not too bad....it is the 7 and up that seem to get me....and let's not forget that dreaded 10 miler!! :scared:

DisneyGirl
01-12-2006, 08:53 AM
Ok, now I'm thinking about this one... only thing is that I have to get training NOW!!! Actually, it wouldn't be too hard because I'm already at about week 3 for the MFM walk/run half schedule for my normal workout week, which is where I would have to be (actually a little past...), and I'm in Cleveland, so it's not like I have to go that far... hmmm...

ohMom
01-13-2006, 08:25 AM
disneygirl - join us!! it's a fun race! i did the first annual last year (in the snow!); you are exactly where i am as for training so i printed out the schedule and will start following it to a T today. weight training for me (I did my long one yesterday actually without even knowing it) tomorrow i think i'll walk and try to make it to a yoga class

i'm trying to lose some weight before our day -- and stay on target with my exercise challenge for the month

liz -- i live about 30 mins from the arena district/downtown. if i dont' get a hotel for Saturday you all are welcome to come and shower here too! i'll probably just stay home friday night so i can sleep good (hopefully) and meet up with you before the start. BUT we'll definately ALL connect for packet pick-up and lunch! there are a few good spots close by, when it's closer I can give you all details and we can pick and i'll make us a reservation.

After a conversation with Molli and really comprehending that there is a 5k at the Columbus C event, I think I will just do that! I don't feel like I will be ready for the 1/2 (g bladder surgery recouping and a touchy hamstring) but a 5k should be in my reach!

You all sound like you would have too much fun without me - so I just better be there

And, I am thinking we need to stay over one night - that will be M's call - which night ~ but I think I read that a good night's sleep 2 night's before the race is just as good if not better - so we'll see what she is thinking :goodvibes BUT if we stay Sat night we might just have to have a massage somewhere - okay, okay a 5k'er probably doesn't need a massage but just remember I am going to put forth a lot of effort cheering as the rest of you cross that finish line :cheer2:

Will someone please post a picture of the penguin medal? DH and I are starting to lineup races leading up to the Chicago marathon in October. So far this is what we are running:

5 miler Indy Feb. (dh wants the polar bear t-shirt)
15k Plainfield March
1/2 marathon Valparaiso April
10 miler Cleveland April
1/2 marathon Indy May
10 miler NY July

We would like more races b/c most of those take place before our actual training for Chicago begins in mid-June. I think I can talk DH into running the Columbus and Chicago distance classics if he sees the penguin medal. If anyone wants more info on any of the races we're running I'll be happy to share. I'm so happy everyone wants to keep running. I did not think we would be so eager to sign up for another marathon after Disney. :)

I won't be running the Valpo race. I have some very BAD feelings about one of the sponsors of that race. Last year I had a really horrible experiance with the owner of a shoe store. I am Pooh sized and basically he told me there was NO WAY I should be considering a 1/2 marathon and was very unkind to me because of my size when lookng for shoes. Sad thing is, I told all of my friends here about that, as well as some friends close to home...and as easy as it would be to buy shoes from him, I drive to Chicago to get my shoes, socks, body glide and blister shield. Too bad he has NO CLUE how hard I am on shoes.

I did get my "revenge" though....I saw him at the Expo and told him he was a real jerk but I was here and I was going to run (ok walk) my race and get my medal...and I did! I made sure he saw it too....and I let him know again he was a real jerk and should NEVER estimate anything based on somebody's weight, cause you just never know who you are dealing with. But do remind me, I will be sure to be there to cheer you guys on. I hear that is a fun race.

That's absolutely awful!! The best part is that I'll bet if someone who was 105 lbs and 5'10" walked in, who had never run, walked, or crawled a day in their life and said they were going to run a marathon next week, he would be all encouraging!

Thanks LIZDOTCOM99 for posting the Penguin Medal picture!!!! It's totally kewl looking! I just started reading his Courage to Start which is a quick read. Figure reading about running will be comforting as I heal from the Half (either my foot has a stress fracture or a bad strained something).

I understand the Flying Pig is a fun one to do too. Anyone do it? I would love to do the Flying Pig this year but have commited to only focusing on DL in September then WDW in January as I want to do better on my 2nd and 3rd (finishes that is) and don't want to risk another injury that will eat into my training this year.

"Course
The course will close on a continuous pace of 20:00 minutes per mile. Anyone who cannot maintain the 20:00 minute per mile pace must move to the sidewalk as the course closes to allow regular traffic through. As long as my clinical rotations start Aug 14th like I expect, I'm pretty sure that we(NYcpa-mom/kathy, Stitch_lover_Sith-sis/erin) will be coming to Chicago. I probably have to catch a flight that afternoon/evening so I can be back in time to start Monday morning but... I actually looked up airfare to Columbus and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting but I really need to show some self control with race entries at some point so I think we will do Chicago but I'll be skipping Columbus. :sad1:

Funny story about this- Mom sent me an email with just one line in the message body "What are you doing August 13th?" Nothing else provided as to what she was talking about except a little tiny clue in the subject line- just one word "race." So I Googled Aug 13 race and the second hit listed was purple- the Chicago Distance Classic, that I had already looked at info on. So I shot back an email to Mom accusing her of having Penguin medal envy. She hadn't seen Liz's pictures yet because she heard about the Chicago race in the weekly thread and hadn't been in this one. We are booked at SOG resort Aug 6-12th but I will probably cancel that and we'll go west instead. We'll go to WDW in Dec and then maybe(okay, almost definitely) again in Jan :rolleyes1 so I think we can skip the Aug trip.

BTW Liz- mom and I both like the T-shirt designs.

Pictures...did you say pictures? Well here is a little inspiration for all of the Chicago crew...Chicago Distance Classic Pictures (http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=2122637268) We had such a great time....and I am totally serious about whoever wants to stay at my house. Bring your air mattress, sleeping bag or whatever and plan to have a lot of fun and a great weekend. We can have a nice pasta party, do some Chicago site seeing on packet pickup day...which I think is Saturday, and a million other things. I am so stoked....I can hardly wait. And to make things even sweeter..I ordered my Garmin today....Amazon has them for $99.99 with FREE shipping...and that is for the 201.....Cam made me do it...That is my story anyway, and I am sticking to it! :rotfl2:

Okay, guys, I am getting so excited about doing the Chicago event! I had looked at Liz's pix a while back and just enjoyed them all over again. It sounds like we are going to have such an awesome WISH group.

BTW, when Liz decides she doesn't know how she ever lived without her Garmin I will be glad to confess to twisting her arm! ;)

You guys are killing me.....I live an hour SW of Chicago, how can I not go too?? Rookie question though....the Chicago date is a few weeks before the DL Half....how do you adjust your training? I followed MFM for the WDW Half.

My house is open too, but I have to warn you all that I am directionally dsylexic and unable to drive into Chicago, so I will be probably depending on DH for transportation.

Pat- I would follow the MFM program leading up to Chicago, recover for a week and then do the last 3 week of the MFM program again leading up to the DL 1/2. Once you reach the level, you basically just will keep it there. Not a rookie question at all, BTW. A rookie wouldn't need to ask it, would they:)

The theory behind my answer is detailed in Hal Higdon's explanations about running multiple marathons in a year. I realize that we are talking halves here but the prinicples should be the same. In addition, for those making the jump to the full next year but doing the DL 1/2, train for the DL 1/2 recover and then jump into the marathon program at whatever week it is before the marathon. The mileage doesn't ramp up that quickly so you'll actually be ahead of that game. I did this with running a half marathon Oct 2 last year, did 1 week of recovery, and then started the MFM program at week 6. My LR distances dipped shorter than the half for the next 3 weeks so it certainly didn't hurt to come into the program mid-stream.

I am still in my after the BIG event taper here, and will begin the training for April soon. With 10 more weeks until the April event, I don't want to get too tapered!

Cam, picture this...{{Lily===>>.009%===>>Cam}} (that's me nudging you) I only need to nudge a bit since you are 99.99% sure!

Have you considered long enough? It would be such fun! Come walk with us.

Hey Lily! I am not going to be able to make it to Columbus. DH doesn't want to commit to using anymore of his vacation this early in the year (we are already using two weeks when we go out west, combining visiting national parks with the DL half). Fortunately I have more PTO than he does, but I think I have mentioned previously that I am directionally challenged, and driving to Columbus from IL is just not a good thing for me. Bummer, because it sounds like it is going to be a blast, and I know my son would figure out a way to come and cheer me on. I am however, going to find some way to make it to the Chicago Classic, even if I have to hire a limo to take me.

Lynne - thanks for the advice on transitioning from the Chicago half to the DL half. I am really excited.

Now, a T shirt suggestion.....I loved the penguin shirt! Do you think there is any way to make a "generic" shirt? Maybe with the WISH 2006 (like the WDW shirt) on the front and the penguin on the back. I'll bet there are some WISHers who won't be able to come to Columbus or Chicago, but would like a shirt as they train during the year. And even WISHers who are looking ahead to DL and beyond, who might like a shirt or two now. It's just a thought. I know I smile every time I see the shirt we had at WDW.

This is going to be a great year!

liz -- did you post the t-shirt design?? i emailed to Mom and my cousin, Nikki. Mom definately wants one, still watiting on nik's reply. i'll be sure and get with her by friday, ok?

my training has been vice-versa'ed a bit this week, but i'm getting the minimum of MFM training in, the 30 mins a day is light for my normal so i'm just sticking with the rotation but yet my normal time-frame. make sense? the 5 miler this weekend will be my first over 4 miles in quite a L O N G time

I live about 90 minutes north of Chicago so I think I should be able to swing this! I am so glad this is on Sun. not Sat. because I have to work Fri the 11th but I had one more vacation day to pick for the summer and I had to pick it by last week and I took off Mon. Aug. 14 so I'll even have a day off to "recover" before going back to work. I must of know in the back of my mind there was a good reason to pick that day off :) I ordered my MFM book from Amazon a few days ago and it shipped today and I just ordered my Garmin 201 tonight! I am getting to be an Amazon "frequent buyer" with all this marathon training and DH thinks I'm nuts.

And you are more than welcome to stay with me the weekend of the Chicago Distance Classic.....I do beleive there is going to be a big party at my house that weekend! Whoo hoo!

Good idea on the "generic shirt". I will have to call and get some pricing....maybe we could do Sunny's WISH logo on the front...and a penguin theme on the back...of course we should decide which shirt we like best and take a vote.....

Now for my training info,

It was a beautiful "spring day" in January in our Cleveland OH area. I could not resist so I went out to the Towpath to do 2 miles in the mud. It was lovely! I am happy when I am there. I had on my hiking boots and was dressed in slacks, sweater and my winter coat, didn't change from work. Too hot for me. I have Vasque hiking boots I cannot hike in...I have the beginnings of blisters--go figure, but I was out there putting in the steps!

I know I posted this on the other site- but I plan on doing the CDC. At work these initials mean something completely different....center for disease control not the chicago distance classic.

I live about 1 hour North of Chicago and work in the city. If people want to crash in my spare bedroom, that would be fine and I have a parking at work in the city- probably take a cab from there.

After all, I have to use my new cute lime green outfit- I will have to take a picture of it and post.

welcome WDWFAN9! glad you are joining us for the CCC on april fools day! if the course is the same as last year, we loop around the Shoe around Mile 9 (i think) it was eeery last year, due to the weather the participants and crowds were thin---when we got to the Shoe we didn't know which way to go. Literally, the back window of a parked car rolled down and an arm waved to direct us. I thought, hmmmm..... the race volunteers are shielding themselves from the weather, what the heck am I doing??

anyhoo --- it'll be a fun time!

i got my 5 miler in today am I'm starting to feel like i'm back in training mode again.

Liz -- how you like your Garmin???

t-shirts --- i have an idea if you don't mind my trying if it's not to late. I did talk with Mom and since she is doing the 5k she doesn't want one saying the half distance on it. i forgot to call my other potential order - my cuz nik. i'll pin her down. what is our timeframe for picking out and orering????

Can I make a suggestion? Last summer, a wonderful DISer did a custom graphic for my girlfriend and me, when we were going away for a girls' only weekend to WDW. She sent me the graphic file, which I then took to Aztec Printing on a disk together with 2 tee shirts for Judy and me. Aztec created iron on transfers and did them for a total of about $20. I found really cute scoop neck tee's at Kohl's for about $5, so the cost was very reasonable. If someone created the graphic file and sent it to everyone, then each person could find the kind of shirt they want and get the file converted to a transfer and applied to their shirt. Not sure how everyone feels about that, but it really does cut down on the work for the coordinator. I still don't know how Carrie and her DH managed to coordinate so many different kinds of shirts, collect payment, place the order, ship, etc. for WDW marathon weekend.

The one thing I'd suggest is that everyone agrees on a color (maybe something that most of us have seen at Target) and the person who creates the graphic makes the colors as dramatic and the quality as extreme as possible to get a good quality transfer.

What do you think?

i'm not feeling as strongly about the Chicago Classic this year, i have a girls trip to Vegas in the fall and i'm still 'justifying' to myself why i should register for WDW 1/2 2007 -- so i'm going to pass on Chicage this year but it sounds like a GREAT event and one i will keep in mind for the future

i'm off to vote for the pengiun clipart

Liz -- for the columbus 1/2, if you are getting the shirts i'll need two medium long-sleeve t-shirts (unless they run BIG you can get two small) Mom is undecided depending on if the clipart refers to the 13.1 disance or not

I am no expert by any means....but if it makes you feel any better...the CDC is also sponsored by LaSalle Bank, the same people who do the Chicago Marathon and many people who do the Chicago Marathon use that race as a training tool.....that is what I have read on the website anyway. But since I am only a halfer...I can't really tell you anything from experience. My thinking though is if you are doing the full in September....you should be at half marathon mileage at that point in your training anyway and might just want to call it a long run? Good luck with figuring that out though. I hope you join us for it! :teeth:
