Built a snowfort in the hill left by the snowplow and had your mom ban you from using it because it could collapse and kill you. (Not that we listened ;) )

OK, maybe this is only for those who were teens in the 80's but:
Wore your Cougar boots with the tongues hanging out and got the loop of your laces caught in the hook of the other boot leading to an embarassing wipeout which soaked your supertight jeans and hurt your hands because there was no way you were wearing mits or snowpants and look like a complete loser!

One more from the 80's - sorry this thread is making me laugh!
Slide down the hill at school using your Adidas' bag as a sled.

Wouldn't have been a problem if you'd been wearing your leg warmers!!! :teeth: :teeth:

Aw man! Cougar boots! In my highschool the coolest accessory with the cougar boot, was a plaid lumber jacket. Classy!
How about: Made 'ice cream' using maple syrup and a handful of snow.

Puddle jumping is what we call racing them across the open section of the lake up at the cottage we have had to fish out a few sleds before but most of the time no one sinks em.

Ahh-winter in Saskatchewan.
The tunnelling of the snow through the backyard. Putting hot water on the cold steps to make an icy mini hill to slide down, jumping off the roof onto a pile of snow, wearing a t-shirt in 2 degree weather because the weather is "so nice!". Or, how about building a snowman in -40 degree weather because that's the only darn thing you can do when it's that flippin cold!
Don't forget - another thing we do....When the windshield wiper fluid is empty in the winter, we use snow from the side of the road to clean the windshield, or risk dying because you cannot see the car in front of you. Or, drive in a car in the winter with no heat and have the passenger continually scrape the windshield on the inside so that you can see out the window. Only in Canada can you do this (Yep, I learned from experience!)
Oh, the joys of living in an Arctic tundra!

LOL! We've done both of these! When DH and I were dating (teenagers), he had an old VW Beetle. He drove and it was my job to scrape the inside window so he could see! :rotfl:

How about skating down the street as it was impossible to walk in those conditions. Also making ice balls using the dryer vent to melt the snow, and/or putting snow in the freezer to show off in the summer that you have a snow ball left................ :rotfl2:

Remember...."when you wear Beaver canoe you wear the wilderness".
I had cougar boots too for really, snowy days but of course we wore our "north stars" shoes when the snow wasn't too deep.

Ahh memories...thanks guys!!!
One to add: Beaver boarding!!!!! I dont know if this was isolated to UNB but one of the winter hits was to take the cafeteria trays (Beaver Foods was the contracted company) and slide or ride down the hills on them.
Thus~ Beaver boarding!!!!! :earboy2:

How about tripped over the extension cord, didn't realize you'd pulled out the plug, and didn't tell anyone until the next morning when the car wouldn't start because the temp was -40C. :confused3
Another one was getting on a plane in Toronto with the temperature around 0C, getting off the plane in Regina 3 hrs later where the temp was -38C and having your lungs pretty much crystallize on you from the cold after one breath. The joys of winter in Regina...

I don't think this is a 1 time deal!! :rotfl: I still do this a few times each winter! You know your windshield fluid is getting down - but of course you think you can make it to the next gas station for more!
I am not sure how rural everyone is, but how about after the snow plow wings the end of your laneway right full of snow and you use it as a ramp to get into your laneway, but get stuck and your car does not have a wheel left on the ground!
Or when it is the first major snow fall and you are certain there will not be that much snow on the No Winter Mainenance roads yet! After all, I have 4 wheel drive and I can get through anything!

Learning when you are very young, that if you are going to eat snow, make sure it is NOT yellow!
Knowing snow is not "all that beautiful" when you throw in all that brown yucky slush.
definately dory

At the first hint of a snow fall, trying to toboggan on the snow covered grass!

Ok, this thread is too funny. I had the northstar sneakers, the Cougar boats, the leg warmers, even the Beaver Canoe/Roots sweatshirts but only cause we went to visit my grandparents in Toronto ( couldn't get that in NB in the 80's). Did the windshield thing, had no heat in the car thing, also used to skate on the roads cause they were full of ice & just about got killed for making tunnels in the ditch & the snowplow came.Went thru the pond cause we were convinced it was safe & almost froze walking back thru the woods to get home before our parents found out. One thing I do remember is leaving the crazy carpet on the deck so my dad could go out & step on it & slid across step screaming he was going to kill us(really, you think he would have learned after 3 or 4 times). You know, he hates crazy carpets to this day! You know, its a wonder we are alive today. Thanks for the laugh guys!
definately dory
12-14-2005, 07:59 AM
Oh, my goodness, our parents do get payback!! I went outside last night and fell on my butt because my kids left their crazy carpet right in front of the door, I didn't see it because it was covered in a fine layer of snow. As soon as I fell I thought "Dad I now know what you were talking about." :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

How about building a backyard rink and then playing hockey with your boots on instead of skates. Dad always shook his head at that one.

In today's snow I thought of another thing that Canadian kids do, because I did it myself! Try to slide across the snow covered pavement in your shoes, but it isn't slick enough so your shoes stop dead and down you go.
Or walking your dog and tripping on black ice! Who says that tailbones are fragile! I figure mine is the strongest bone in my body!
