I'm still packet-free  Haven't gotten my DVC planner yet either. Is it possible I've been blacklisted by Disney? :confused3 The only good sign is that when I search my name on the official marathon site, I do show up.
Did much better with the food thing for today's LR. The menu included a Snicker's marathon bar to start, honey shots at miles 3, 6 and 8, and peanut butter crackers at miles 5 and 7. I drank a Slim-Fast as soon as I got in and did fine. Thanks to everyone for your help with this!
Good training everyone! We're almost there ::MickeyMo

I am so happy to have found this group.
Liz, I wish you and your family much comfort during these difficult times.
Thank you to everyone for making me feel welcome in your group. I would love to come to dinner on 1/6, however, I don't think I will arrive in Orland in time.
Leigh Ann and Melissa, about those pains I have 1 word...STRETCH. I contributed to my injury by not stretching. I have started to stretch multiple times during the day and it seems to be be making a difference.
I know what you mean about asking the Dr. I had 1 ortho tell me to go ahead and try the Disney World Marathon and that the worst problem would be a longer recovery from the plantar fasciitis. Another ortho told me running in January was a dumb idea. Both agreed I won't cause any long term harm so I think I am ready to give it a run. I do suggest you pay attention to any pain and make sure you aren't doing any damage. It is still 7 weeks from the marathon so there is plenty of time to make small changes if necessary and be ready for January.
I hope to try a medium distance run tomorrow. It will be a real test as it will be the first in more than 2 months.
Someone asked where we are staying, I think we will be at Boardwalk.
I could use some information on places to meet family after the run and how to plan viewing locations, does anyone have experience on these issues. Thanks.

Oh Oh I can answer about where to meet after. There will be little "tents" with alpha letters on them after the runners/walkers pass through the finish line and photo line and food line (friends and family will not have access until you pass through all this). This past January we all decided that we were a family and our last name started with W (WISH of course!) so plan to meet up with all your family there. It was nice to hang out to watch folks come in. I didn't hook up with many but meet-ups there did occur. DH had no problem locating me.
I was doing a nostalgic search. I thought maybe someone else might enjoy my trip down memory lane so I will post up these 2 links:

I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend. I am.

Welcome to the group Harry!
Liz, continued PD and prayers for you and your family in the challenging times ahead. :wizard:
Mom and I worked out at the gym today while my sis(Stitch_lover_Sith) was at PT for her knees-same building. I still dislike running on the TM even when I can see the TV. Watched some Bratz and Winx while listening to a Madonna playlist on the Shuffle. Music alert: the new Madonna, Confessions on a Dance Hall Floor, is good upbeat electronica and good running music. I hadn't listened to her stuff since Ray of Light and was very pleasantly surprised.
Triathletes and gonna-bees: St Anthony's Triathlon(Apr 30) and the Meek and Mighty Triathlon(Apr 29) in St Petersburg, FL race entry opens at 0900 on Dec 1st. The St Anthony's race sold out in under 24 hours last year according to the info. It is an olympic distance: 1.5 km swim in Tampa Bay, 40 km bike, 10 km run. In addition to the 3500 age group athletes, it tends to draw a strong pro/elite field and should be a good spectator race. The Meek and Mighty Triathlon is for kids and novice adults. It has 3 age categories, under 11, 11-14, and 15 plus. The older kids and adults do a 1 mile run, 5.4 mile bike, and 200 yard pool swim. This race is capped at 500 entries. The website for more info is www.satriathlon.com.
I think I'm going to be collecting some frequent flyer miles on Southwest Airline over the course of about a month with flying to Tampa end of April, Orlando the next weekend, and then Orlando again 2 weeks later. The first 2 weeks of that will also include 5 exams plus ACLS. One of those exams is Endocrine System though so maybe Mel Chimera will help me study ;) I know I'll do fine in the academic work and doubt it will jeopardize my membership in the geek club(Psi Sigma Alpha) but even I've got to maybe question some of my priorities.
I don't even really have a good reason for wanting to do St Anthony's other than that it's timing about 3 weeks before the FL Half Ironman is pretty good for a tune up. The Half isn't even my major goal race for the year, IM Wisconsin in September is. Other assorted race just because races I'm looking at doing include the Mooseman Half and the Timberman Half plus the Skinnyman in Skaneateles. I'll also do the Xterra East Championship and some of the point series races such as Capital City in Hartford CT and maybe 1 other depeding on the schedule. I just realized I pretty much have my 2006 summer completely planned. I'll take Step 1 of the Comlex end of June and of the USMLE right around July 6th or 7th and then do an orthopedics rotation at West Point from July 10-August 4th. We are then scheduled to go to SOG at WDW for 6 nights before I start 3rd year clinical rotations proper. Should I get a psych consult???
Happy training and quick healing for the injured. Off to bed so I can raise my BP with traffic on the Mass Turnpike tomorrow. I drive across 4 different states but that one's roads and drivers irritate me the most. On the bright side, I will be making the reverse journey again Dec 16th and leaving for my happy place Dec 17th.

I finally decided to de-lurk once again and check in with all of my fellow DIS marathoners. I was doing really well with my training during late summer and early fall and then hit a bad patch with sick kids etc. etc. So, I got back OP last month and things are looking up again.
I am so glad to see everyone doing so well and staying motivated. I need to stop by here more so I can soak up some of the great inspiration floating around!!
Today I did 7 miles of walk/run and another .5 mile of warm-up and cool-down. My time for the 7 miles was 96 minutes (13.71 minutes/mile) and 105 minutes including the warm-up/cool-down (14.00 minutes/mile). I did 7 minutes walk/3 minutes run (weird combination I know but it is working for me right now) and felt really good once I warmed up. I think I could have gone another mile or two but I needed to get home and I didn't want to overdo it so I stopped. Considering that when I started training in July I had never done more than 1 mile in my life I think I have made some good progress.
I am hoping some of you more experienced athletes can help me with a few questions. Right now I am only training on the TM due to needing the kids club most days for my 2 kids and uncooperative weather and the general fear of the "unknown." I was planning to go outside today but it was raining so I didn't so I am planning to try on Monday (only day my kids are both in school for a few hours) but I am VERY NERVOUS about making the transition. I am afraid that I have become TM-dependent and that I will fall apart when I am out on the "road." Any suggestions on how to make this transition? We have a running/biking trail very near our home that should help and I have a Garmin 201 but I am feeling very anxious about this and could use any advice/encouragement that anyone has to spare.
Next question - how do you know when you need sports drinks and/or powerbars/gel supplements? Right now I am only drinking water during my workouts but as my mileage is getting higher these days I am thinking I should be doing more. I don't feel bad during my workouts or afterwards so I haven't really done much thinking about it but I am thinking I should as race day gets closer. So, how do you know what/how much to start with? Any suggestions on what to try first?
Thank you to everyone for posting here and providing such a great place to receive/give/share encouragement, advice, and pixie dust. I know that I would never have seriously considered doing the half in January if it wasn't for the great people here on the WISH board!!!

sleeping beauty-not really any advise, but you might find yourself going faster on the road. I am not good on the TM & do much better outside. You do need to get in some outside walks though so it will better simulate race day. Your training seems to be going great. Glad you're no longer lurking.
Lynn-o.k. I already have a bunch of races in my head for next year. I cant take any more choices :goodvibes No, i don think I'll be ready for an April tri. May will be my first. DS8 wants to do a tri too, but he has a long way to go. I think he might do the Ironkids tri in Atlanta. You rock with all those races, med school, training, etc. you might need a psych consult by the end of next year :rotfl:
Lily- I love looking at those pics. I cant wait to be in them this year
Mel-dont worry, my mom doesnt have her packet either. And she live in Mobile, AL-much closer to the mouse than me. Good job on the LR! :bounce:

Sleepingbeauty - I believe it was the wise Lily who said. Get those steps in. You are doing it. I'm sure you'll be fine moving from the TM. I was actually thinking I need to move to the TM to get ready for the warmer climate.
Lynn- what about a 50k trail run in Feb in Arkansas???? I need a muddy buddy! I think it will take me about 8 hrs.

Rhonda 2 points in response to your commets.
In regard to the treadmill, don't worry. Last weekend a woman won the Philadelphia Marathon and she was quoted in the paper and said she did most of her training at lunch on the treadmill. I will try and find a link to the article.
In regard to the sport drinks, power gells etc... don't wait until you feel you need one. You should have a plan and follow it. You should never wait until you feel you really need a drink or a gell. You can be certain that with a 1/2 or a full marathon your body needs fuel.

Manayunk's Kroshus gets it right this time
By CHRISTOPHER A. VITO
The 26.2-mile run was always too much for Emily Kroshus. Before yesterday's Philadelphia Marathon, the 22-year-old Manayunk resident had entered two other marathons, and had bowed out before completing either race.
In those runs, Kroshus made what she called "the rookie mistakes."
On race day she had worn new socks, which caused her feet to blister. Often she would train too much, or start too fast out of the gate. Then fatigue and dehydration would set in.
"Pretty much everything you could [mess] up, I did," said Kroshus, a 2004 Princeton All-America in the 10,000 meters who also ran cross country and other distance events.
Kroshus made all the right moves this time, finishing as the top female runner in the Philadelphia Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 7 seconds.
Kroshus, a native of Calgary, Alberta, says her 9-to-5 job as a financial analyst limits just how much training she can do. She said she regularly uses a treadmill on her lunch break.
"Sometimes I'll get home from work, and it'll be dark," she said. "The best time for me to run is during lunch, so I run."
Defending champion Larisa Michailova, of Russia, led after two legs but faded as Kroshus poured it on at the 12-mile mark.
"This girl [is] a very good runner," said Michailova, who finished second. "[It was] her best result, no? She was good. Next year, this race might be better for me."
Joseph Nderitu, who set the Philadelphia Marathon course record in 2003, was the male winner again in 2:21:02, a few minutes longer than it took him 2 years ago.
Before the race, Nderitu warmed up on the Ben Franklin Parkway with two other runners: fellow Kenyan Joseph Kamau and Uganda's Joshua Koros. Through 14 miles, the three were still together, representing the lead pack.
It wasn't until the 23rd mile that Nderitu broke free, and he went on to win by nearly 2 minutes. Nderitu said Mile 23 was his first opportunity to take the lead.
"If I want to pass, I just pass. I can't think about it," Nderitu said. "I just wanted to win. I didn't know how strong they [were]."
Thomas Haxton (2:27:49) earned the title of top male Philadelphia finisher. Haxton, 24, who lives in the southwest section, was sixth overall among some 8,000 marathon runners.
It was estimated that close to 10,000 runners participated in the various events, making this year's race the largest in its 12-year history.
Other results of note:
• Vyacheslav Shabunin and Tatiana Chulakh were the men's and women's top finishers in the 8-kilometer race, which began 30 minutes after the marathon's start. Shabunin, 36, of West Chester, won in 23:49. Chulakh, 23, of Germantown, Md., finished at 27:01. Seann Mulcahy, 16th overall in the 8K with a time of 26:07, was the top male Philadelphia. The top Philly female was Elizabeth Seeley (29:53), 10th among women.
• Chad Johnson, 30, of Jeffersonville, Ind., finished in 1:49:21 to win the wheelchair marathon.

Welcome Harry and Rhonda  As for gels, I think the general rule of thumb is to start at about 40 minutes into your LR and have one every 40-60 minutes with plenty of fluids. YMMV
Lynn-- You are a bad influence! I have visions of tris dancing in my head :Pinkbounc I don't think I can do either of those, but one's in my future, I'm just sure of it! Especially now that I am a proud Y member and have access to a pool.
Lilly-- Thanks for the pics! I get so excited when I see veteran WISHers race pics :cool1:
MelR-- I'm sorry to hear you have sore spots. I hope they will go away with rest :wizard: Still trying to sell that 50k, huh? I wish I could take you up on it!
Mel-- I would call about your packet this week. Last year mine never arrived. I didn't call because I knew I wasn't going anyway. I feel so bad for you :grouphug:
My LR today was really hard. It was just 12 miles, but as we've all been learning, the short ones seem to be as hard or harder than the long ones :confused3 Plus, I had to brake my second winter running rule: "no running on ice". The bike path had a thick layer of frost in many sections. It felt like I was on a TM, the ground slipped out from under my step. It was very mentally draining, as I had to concentrate on each and every footfall. No zoning out until mile 7 when I hit dry pavement. I didn't take an ice bath afterwards because I decided 12 miles does not warrant ice torture. However, its now a couple hours later and my legs are stiffer than they were last week after 20 and ice soaking. I'll be soaking next week for sure!

Sigh....
(Whine on...)
I think I need a pick-me-up. The past three weeks have been TERRIBLE when it comes to my training. Between work and the weather, it's been tough enough staying sane and then when I'm ready to go, it's white-out conditions outside. :guilty: And the next two weeks don't necessarily look any better, with the possibility of a long work trip the middle of next week. :guilty: I have GOT to get it in gear. I know in my heart of hearts that I could walk the darn thing if I had to, but I'm starting to doubt my training at this point a bit :guilty:
Oh, and Northwest changed my flights again, but at least this time I feel a little better about the layover.
(Whine off...)
All that said, it sounds like the rest of you are really doing great things. KEEP IT UP!
I think that's about all for now.
Happy training everyone!
Solotraveler :earsboy:
Solo - I know what you mean, the weather really throws a wrench into things when it doesn't cooperate. Plus work, Ugh. You've trained so hard up until now, you'll be fine. I'm not sure, but I don't think all that training falls by the wayside in 2-3 weeks. Is it possible for you to cross train more, or worst case scenario, get on the dreaded TM? Maybe some strength training in your legs so at least you're working the muscle & they feel sore. I know I don't feel like I'm training if I'm not sore.
Welcome Harry & Rhonda. I think that everyone here that's been training & run into snags w/ injuries (isn't that everyone?) will agree that we've muddled through & continue to train, maybe on a limited basis, but whatever you've set out to do, the half or the full (or the goofy), we'll all finish. Whether or not it's in a glorious way is besides the point. We'll all cross the finish line & be better for it.

Ice! AHHHHHH...... :earseek: I understand "Just 12" I did not take an ice bath for the same reason. :teeth:
Leigh Ann - See your doctor. After my 1st 1/2 marathon, my foot felt the same way and it ended up being a stress fracture (sp?). Rest, ice and no running for a while will help and if you xtrain, you should be fine. :wizard: :wizard: to you.

When using the treadmill I would recommend not using the 0.0 incline if you can. The treadmill at no incline is quite a bit easier than running, as you don't really need to drive off the ground, you just lift your legs and you get forward movement. Even increasing the incline to only 0.5 is tougher and more like running outdoors. In fact, you'll find running on flat is easier than running with the 0.5 incline on the treadmill (well at least I do). There are a few (only 2 actually) hills on the full course, but to prepare for these I would on occasion rev up the incline a bit to prepare your legs for the overpass and underpass. When I'm on the treadmill I vary the incline to 1.0 and 2.0 for a few minutes to prepare my legs for the hills, and I also reduce the speed when going steeper. Also, I was fighting calf inuries all fall last year and only had 3 or 4 outdoor runs before this year's half. I was able to finish with no difficulty, and like you I was very concerned about running on pavement vs. the treadmill.
Harry
In an earlier life when I was doing lots of distance and speed work I developed pretty nasty plantar faciatis, like you have now. Eventually I found that orthotics solved the problem, but you can reduce the pain by freezing little dixie cups and immediately after running rubbing the peeled back cups right on the pain points on the underside of the heel and ball. It seemed to put out the fire, and allowed me to keep running, which with the marathon only 42 days from today isn't too long.
Good luck to all.

Hello - and welcome to Harry & Rhonda
All good my end - did my 14 miler this weekend. We had a weather warning in effect Saturday morning and as I sat upstairs watching the leaves being stripped off a plant in my garden I decided that maybe I'd run Sunday instead so I toddled off Sunday morning after a night of disco dancing in heels - note to anyone interested, this makes your calves cramp at 12 miles, but you can still walk the other two, who knew?
Am getting very excited now - sat there last week with my little day planner deciding what parks we're going to and when. Boyfriend has to get at least eight goes on test track in before that goes into rehab too - I figured I'd just leave him sitting on it while I do the Chicken Little 5K. And, Harry for suggestions as to where to meet afterwards, I'll be the one in the English pub in Epcot - and if the boy doesn't have my beer waiting for me as I crawl in, you'll hear me shouting at the Boardwalk!!
One final thing - I still don't have my packet (although I did just get a parcel I posted myself from England 10 weeks ago!!!) and while I know I have the email confirming my entry and get my little newsletter every month or so I'm still panicking slightly, so Mel, how do you search the site for your entry. I tried, I failed, so all hints appreciated. Helen

Christa - it's a funny thing that you mentioned the stress fracture. I was just telling phil my symptoms last night and asking if I had a stress fracture!!!! I don't think it is (obviously, phil didn't either. I guess it's not even in the right spot for one!) My right leg is giving me probs! My knee and ankle have been bothering me. I'm guessing that the long runs are just wearing me down. My gait is funny. I run differently with my left leg than i do my right. I have been using some stabilizing shoes more than the cushioning shoes, but I think I may need to stick to the cushion and no stabilizing! I am going to buy a new pair this week. Do you experience body breakdown with all of the long runs? Maybe my body is just not made for this stuff!
Helen - I'll be listening for your holler if the beer is not cold and ready! I think if I had a beer after a long run, I would likely pass out before I could finish the whole thing!

MelR...did you have any trouble finding a life vest for the boy for kayaking? We're ready to try the wild tod in the our kayaks, but she's smaller than your average 2 yo.
Thanks for the packet dancing :) If I have time tomorrow, I'll call them.
Went to MK for a few hours today since we picked up DD12 from her dad in Orlando today. They have a Mickey runner pin! It's got the Mickey from the Run Disney logo in a circle that moves around Cindy's castle. The CM said that they'll still have a specific one for the marathon weekend, but they also have this generic one now.

Mel - We actually found an infant life vest at wal-mart for the boy. During the cold season, they have them at marinas. It has been too cold and windy here to go the last few days. We are getting rain, so I'm hoping that we can try a really gentle river in the next few weeks! Phil just rigged a lift to hang the kayaks above the cars in the garage so it should be easier to car top the boats and I may be evem more inspired to go!!! Hope you are able to take the wild todd soon

Yes the stress fracture put me out a few weeks, but I blame my shoes! My body does start trying to rebel at this point in the training. I do not know if it is the tons of miles each week or just I have been running like this for a long time. I told my DH that I think my body is build for distance more than speed though. I can run SLOW forever. It doesn't bother me to much, but I am also trying to get faster and I think this is what my body is rebeling against! pirate:

MelR, glad you will be joining us at Trail's End!
Christa, good luck to you and Bree with your marathons. Tell Bree we miss her around these parts!
Alright, I have a number of burning questions here:
1. What exactly is "marathon race pace"?
I am really having trouble trying to figure this out. Let's say I have 3 different running speeds:
A 5K speed= 8:30 minute miles,
a middle distance (6-10 miles) = 9:30 minute miles and
Long Run ( 10-18 miles) = 10:15 minute miles.
So, if I run long runs at 10:15 miles, what should I expect to run a marathon after a 3 week taper? Faster (because of the taper), slower (because of the increase distance) or the same pace?
2. Marathon wardrobe -
Those of you who have received your packets, did you notice what the runners were wearing?? Most of the women were in tank tops! Will it be that hot? I don't own a sleeveless running top nice enough to have a marathon picture taken. All of mine have been washed so many times the white tanks are grey and the dark tanks are grey! So my question is, since there is a very small selection in the stores now, is there a place that I could order one on line? MelR, you are my online guru, do you have a suggestion?
Colleen
Lisa loves Pooh
11-27-2005, 07:42 PM
Colleen: The taper--results in you being race ready and maybe a shade faster than your best performance (barring any setbucks). So if you are maintaining your LR's at 10:15 throughout training--you should be looking very closely to a sub-11:00 pace marathon.
Check the pace calculator and it will tell you:

I plugged in 2 hrs 33 minutes 45 seconds for a 15 miler (assuming I did the math right--it was to be a 10:15 mile that I was calculating)--it shows your marathon pace to be at 10:44 if your training is consistent...that's a 4:41:09 projected marathon. AWESOME!
Regarding athletic wear--last year was HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT. I think they use the most recent race pics in teh current packets (so last years packet--everyone was bundled. LOL!). Race day STARTED in the mid-60s and finished in the 80s. It is about as atypical as a 20 degree race in Florida...but both extremes are possible and you must pack accordingly. I'd suggest a nice racing singlet--they are very nice to run in in the heat (if the weather ends up being that way).

I would die with those temperatures, especially after running at 35 degrees most days in NC, I can't imagine the difference you Northerners will feel.
I just checked the "average temperatures" for Orlando for January and the average low is 50 and the average high is 70!!
Thanks for link Lisa, regarding pace.

They had many medical issues with the heat last year. Just make sure to bring a backup outfit--and to hydrate accordingly.
Us Floridians--were dying with it even. The training temps in the 6 weeks preceding were well below race day. It was very bizarre.
It shouldn't be like that--it was a fluke year...just like the year it was in the 20s at race start. :cold:

Howdy everyone! It was so windy today, but the temperature got up to 90. I feel a little silly having all my Christmas lights up, including an 8 foot inflatable snow globe with snowmen holding a sign that says "Let It Snow".
It poured all day yesterday so I did not get in a walk/run. Today I biked 20 miles with my training buddy (my dad). The wind was blowing so hard at times it felt like I was standing still even though I was pedaling as hard as I could. I told him that as my friend Helen from New Zealand would say "This is a real stonker!"
Have a great week everyone!

Craig, thanks for the advice on my plantar fasciitis. I had been running 30-40 miles a week and almost never working in the proper training. I am sure it all contributed to my injury. I must admit that I miss the rush I got from some of the times I ran the last few years, however, I must also admit I was burning out and the pleasure in running was slipping fast. I am trying to learn how to enjoy running in a more sensible style. I am sure my feet are trying to tell my brain something. In the long run (pardon the pun) I will hopefully become a smarter runner from this injury. This forum is reminding me how much fun running is supposed to be. This is an awesome group and I am lucky to be included.
I am thinking about making an appointment to be evaluated and fitted for orthotics. My physical therapist has suggested a podiatrist and my ortho has recommended some funky electronic foot/weight distribution study. I think I will go the simple route with the podiatrist, however, I am concerned about running a marathon with something new like orthotics.
I actually did 60 minutes on Friday and 65 minutes today. I have some pain, however, it is tolerable. I have a plan to try and get in 1 long 20-22 mile run at some point in the next 2-4 weeks. I think that with the base I have built, even with the 2 months I have been down, I will be able to run the marathon.
Colleen a note about clothing. If there is a running store nearby they will probably have warm weather clothes in the discount rack. You should plan on layers and perhaps a long sleeve shirt you can discard as the temp. will be much different at the start. I also suggest never run in anything new that you haven't tested on a medium distance run. You don't want to get into the marathon and find your new shirt or socks or shoes or shorts etc are causing pain.
I was lucky to find this site and group. I am so happy to be included and I am most curious about the history of the group. How did it get started, have many of you run together before. Will there be any way to identify group members during the 1/2 and the marathon. These questions are probably all answered on prior threads and I will spend time tonight doing some homework by reading old messages.
I should probably add to my profile. I am from Philadelphia. Perhaps some of you will come here the first Sunday in May for our 10 miler, The Broad Street Run. It is spectacular.

Colleen - How could I resist an offer to internet shop w/o spending money???
Here is a link to one of my favorite cammies!
Moving comfort camisole (or singlet or whatever) (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/xq/asp/base_no.25901/dept_id./est./qx/product.htm)
After you look at that, click on the link for view all moving comfort products. Their bras are great too and since they are in nice colors, I run with them w/o anything else (well, shorts of course)
I would also look for an underarmour short sleeve t or something like it. they are great and don't chaffe.
Here is a link:

OK - now I'm totally stressed out about the responses to your post about race pace. My training paces are near yours (I'm at about 10:25 for long runs like 18m and about 10:45 for lr's preceeded by a shorter long run) I thought that i would be able to do that same pace for goofy. Is that totally wrong. should i expect to go slower? I don't really care about my time that much b/c it is my first and i'm doing the goofy thing, but i would like to finish around 5:00 (which would be close to 11:27) Am i being unrealistic???? Hello! I did 12 yesterday avg 10:25/mile. That's my best ever! I think it is because of my new Garmin. :cloud9: I use the interval timer like before w/ my watch but because I can now see how far I'm running in each interval I'm more consistent.
Christa- I'm also feeling the pain today (maybe because I went faster than usual?) Can you or someone explain an ice bath? Can I just soak in a tub full of cold water or does it really involve ice?
Colleen- My local running shop had some tanks in the back when I asked about them. There were some on the sale rack but I didn't like them so she brought out some they had in the back. Remember to ask if you go shopping for some.
I got my packet Saturday! :Pinkbounc I'm so excited! It feels real now!

The first step out of bed this morning was awful. The pain in my foot is intense and my entire right leg hurts. This is with only 7 miles yesterday. I haven't run more than 13.1 since September. Perhaps I am fooling myself thinking I can run a marathon in January and have fun at the same time. Perhaps I need to accept the plantar fasciitis and let go the idea of running the Disney World Marathon in January. The plan was for a family vacation the week after the race. Perhaps it is time to be smart and cancel the marathon plans. We can still go to Disney World later in January for a wonderful vacation. I need to make a decision soon. This is my first running injury and I am trying to ignore it and this isn't working.

Yes, I remember the piercing pain of the plantar. If you can get orthotics fairly quickly, then I think you'll be okay.
Remember the plantar pain is due to your physiology and mechanics causing your foot to be unsupported when you run, so the tendons under your foot flex too much at the heel and ball collection points. After enough time they begin to calcify (my x-ray had a little tongue sticking forward from my heel, very chic) and hurt like he**. My orthotics support the underside of my feet perfectly, and the trouble went away and has never reappeared. I know they also say to break the orthotics in slowly, but since they eliminated my pain I went to them right away all the time (as did my wife and daughter, yes all 3 of us have different biomechanical problems).
I have a spenco (flat and green) insert under my orthotics and the combination works great.
And it is GREAT to hear another runner talking about dealing with the rush of past fast times, and working through the fact that those times are gone forever, but the fun can remain. Yesterday I did 13.1 miles at an easy pace, and at mile 10 a little voice inside me popped out and pointed out that I had once run 15 miles in the exact same time. I realize those times were all run about 20 years ago, but it's still hard to let them go (or perhaps it's just a sign of male-ness).
Good luck with the plantars. I remember those painful mornings and really feel for you. I also pretty much ignored it but once I got the othotics I was able to run pain free.

Good morning everyone,
Hope you all had a wonderful Holiday. Mine was a mixture of realization and now the unknown.
I now have a diagnosis... (Drum roll please)... sacrum is out of place :guilty:
I had a PT work on it this weekend and the muscles have contracted so bad around it that it only moved very slighly. The pain was intense for two days following the PT. I was given muscle relaxers and painkillers for the time being. My PT is going to check with others to see if there is a specialist in my area that can work with me on the problem. Though it might be sometime before that can actually occur.
I got my packet on Saturday (day after diagnosis) and :sad1: like a baby as I know that I will not be able to run this year. Not even the slightest chance according to my PT :guilty:
My best to each one of you. I will miss not being able to meet all of you wonderful people that have encouraged me along the way. I would never have made it this far without all of your support :grouphug:

Harry: I've been suffering with the plantar faciitis for the last two months, so I literally feel your pain. I hope you get it under control soon.
No race packet yet for me. I am keeping myself motivated with some great long runs. 10 last Thursday, 12 on Friday and 16 yesterday. Yesterday I felt like I could go the whole 26.2. Not too many days like that!!
Not much longer now!! Best of luck with training this week.

Hi, everyone! I am sorry I have been MIA (with the funeral and then going away), but I am trying to catch up now on how everyone is doing.
My training has been inconsistent, but not non-existent. We were in Hilton Head, SC over Thanksgiving and I did walk to and from the beach house on Thanksgiving (in a round-about sort of course), so I got in 3.8 miles that day and we did some other walking around the resort and the mall, and I went to the gym for an hour on Saturday and did TM, bike & elliptical. I don't even want to think about how many more pounds I am hauling around after a few days of vacation "splurging", but I am back on track today and am looking forward to regular training this week.
Lily -- your pictures are so inspiring. Thank you for sharing!
To everyone who is dealing with pain and especially for those who are having to make difficult decisions, I am so sorry and am sending you :wizard: and
Liz -- I thought of you so much this weekend. My prayers are with you and your family.
Looking forward to getting back in the groove. Thanks everyone for the inspiration and encouragement you provide. :grouphug:

I finally had a race anxiety dream last night. That is so weird for me b/c i usually don't feel nervous about races and i have gotten to the point where i can sleep b/4 big adventure races. I dreamed I woke up 15 minutes after the 1/2 was supposed to start and then they were thinking about letting me start anyway, but i had to run fast to the first cut off to get there b/4 the sweepers. Then I dreamed that I was in the port a potty when the full started and they were anouncing starters names as they crossed the start line. I was planning on running with Christa but I couldn't catch up with her. I heard them announce her name crossing the start line before I could get there. (of course it was only her 1st name) So that's the whole irrational thing. Maybe i shouldn't read the boards right before i go to sleep!!!
I'm planning on calming down this week during the long runs. I am getting EC to run the back to backs with me so she won't be so chipper for the 20 miler. that should help me a little!
Christa - I noticed that I have more pain/injuries when i try to increase my speed. The only other prob i've ever had was when i started trying to run faster!!!
Colleen - keep me posted your internet fashion choices!!!! Did you get a rain coat?
Cam - glad to see you back.
Harry - Have you seen anyone about the plantar faciatis? I think they can inject it (ouch) I hope you are able to participate in the race
Minnie - sorry that you are out for a little while. Maybe since they know the dx they can actually treat you properly.
Sara - I'm surely not taking an ice bath if it is like childbirth (not that it hurt b/c i did not do the natural thing, but i clearly don't like pain)

OMG! Melissa just reminded me! I had a 1/2 marathon nightmare on Wednesday night. It was soooo bizarre.
I think I've told you I have really bad vision and I have a hard time reading signs, etc to follow 5K courses, so I always try to make sure there is someone ahead of me.
I was doing the 1/2 and got so far behind that there was no one ahead of me, so I did what I thought was the course and it included walking into a zero-entry pool and across the pool to the other side where I had to climb down a wall (do you think Mel's adventure race stories have seeped into my dreams or what? :rotfl: ) Once I got down the wall, I was in the woods and suddenly felt something tickling my left hand -- it was a bear cub trundling along next to me, licking my fingers! DH suddenly showed up (having completed the 1/2 and come back to look for me) and asked what was taking me so long and I was really behind on the time. I was freaking out about the bear cub, and he told me I had to continue to walk with my hand at my side and not too fast because if the bear cub couldn't keep licking my hand (think it had something to do with those honey packets I was using?), it would get upset and might give chase and it's mama might show up!
When I checked to see the time, I had no Garmin. When I needed a powerbar, I had no fanny pack (not sure where the honey came from! :confused3 ). Worse yet, I looked over and saw other participants down a hill on a road (I was in the woods, tripping over roots, etc) and got back on course to be with them -- I was SOOOO grateful that I could get back on course-- and I noticed they all had those little metal pencils that come with PDAs. I asked them why and they told me that they had to punch in their bib number at each mile marker! So, even though I was caught up with them, I was not "on course". The dream ended without me knowing if I actually finished.
What a nightmare!

Did anyone else notice that, in the race booklet, it says headphones are "discouraged," not prohibited. It lists all the things that are illegal, like strollers, wagons, etc. but then says headphones are discouraged due to audio announcements made for your safety on the course. There are also pictures in the book of people wearing headphones. I don't think they'd picture something that was going to get you in trouble. I guess with all the people who've used them in the past when they were "illegal", Disney just gave up and allowed them.
Good for those of us who may need a musical pick me up along the way, but I hope this doesn't screw up the Wish shirt text.

OMG--Minnie...I have to say wow--you have what I had and I can totally understand (okay, let me explaiin--it is fixable--that's why I am happy for you)...
I had this last year. You need a GOOD therapist who specializes in manual therapy. Additionally--have them check your Psoas muscle to see if it needs releasing.
Also--look into the sacro-wedgey (google it)...i ended up getting one--and man oh man did it make a difference (sacrum finally stayed in place after therapist put it back).
You are not out for the count for you future marathoning career---the exercises they give you should focus on strenghtening your core stability.
It actually went out on my 20 mile run last year--I mean...bad out (didn't know what it was at the time)--we're talking swelling and everything. I iced like an igloo---stopped running for 2 weeks.....and got back into it. By the grace of God I was able to do the marathon...but once I had my break--I had trouble. For me it never hurt while exercises--it was always when I wasn't.
The great thing about this--is once it gets all squared away--and as long as you maintain your condition....impressively, you will able to go for that Donald (or mickey) once again.
Now does it make sense of why I am so happy for you--very fixable condition--walking/running proof...right here!
(I will say that I did have to fire my first therapist--she couldn't figure out why my back pain was occuring--the fact that your PT actually provided a diagnosis--means that he/she is going in the right direction already :goodvibes )
Very fixable--don't lose hope.....and check into that sacro-wedgy...my therapist was skeptical--but after reading up on it--she decided to tell me to go ahead and get it. Just....WOW! What a difference.
Good luck and no worries! (my recovery was about 20 weeks--but you have to include that I got rear ended by a hit and run in the midst of therapy and my back spazzed out a bit from that and I couldn't run for 2 weeks due to pain issues).
Once you get that pain part (the part where it is excrutiating and you need meds)--you then can do activity again.

You guys are killing me with the marathon nightmare stories. Cam, I almost choked on my Diet Coke reading your bear cub story. I tend to get overly worried about things (just ask Krista :) ), so I can see myself having some nightmares in the near future. I'll be sure to post them here for everyone's enjoyment.
Ok, I now know what you guys mean about taper back weeks being more difficult than longer mileage weeks. I had a shorter LR this weekend (12 miles), and Krista had a longer one for her training program (8 miles). We both ran at a park nearby, and it happened to be pouring rain and windy, which didn't help at all. I had the WORST run. I think Krista did, too, but I'm sure she'll tell you about it. I thought, "No big deal, it's just a little 12-miler." By the time I hit mile 9, I didn't think I would actually finish. And the worst part is that I'm more sore today than I have been after my 17 or 18-milers. Go figure. I guess the moral of the story is that I can't blow off a shorter run as no big deal, especially in the rain. Which brings me to another question--how many of you will absolutely DIE if it rains on Jan 7/8? I mean, I know we will all finish regardless, but how much would it stink to run 13 or 26 miles in the rain? If nothing else, yesterday convinced me that my little "support group" should be carrying an extra pair of socks and shoes to swap out at the half way point "just in case."
Anyway, now I'm just rambling. I did actually get a chance to read most of this week's thread, and it sounds like everyone is doing pretty well. Sorry to those who are going through pain and injuries. Just try not to get too down on yourselves and don't forget what a great support group you have in these boards.
Have a great week, everyone! Good luck running off the turkey, potatoes, stuffing, pies, mixed nuts, cake, chocolate, rice krispy treats, more cake.... (oh, sorry. I got carried away listing all the food I ate that I really shouldn't have this weekend. :) )

Minnie--here's the weblink---you may want to print of the pages that explain what it is and how to use it to show to your PT. While you are on pain meds and if the area is swollen...I don't personally advise using it. There is already some discomfort involved when you learn how to use it--and if you have present pain issues...it will just make it feel worse. But as your therapist begins to get your sacrum back in place--the wedgy can be an invaluable tool to keep it there.

Craig again thanks for the advice and words of support. I haven't yet reached the point where I am able to silence the voices telling me to run and run hard every time. I do know that I previously reached a point where I treated every run as a hard run and the pleasure was slipping. I try to look at the plantar fasciitis as a reason to reevealuate this thinking. I thank you for your words of wisdom.
I need to make a decision very soon regarding January. I keep going in both directions. On the 1 hand I think I can do it and really want to try and on the other I have bad pain at times just walking and haven't run longer than 13.1 since September. My heart says run and my head knows better. At this point I hope my heart wins.

Cam - Your dream was AWESOME!!!!! That was a total adventure race. You do know we are given coordinates and we must punch a race passport with punches at each checkpoint in order to prove we were on course. Maybe the next time we do a 4 person race, we'll ask you to be our 4th!!!!! I have never seen a bear while racing, but I did see bear tracks alongt the river during our last race. It was during one of the portages where the guys were carrying the canoe and I was walking next to them looking pretty (pretty dirty that is!)

OK since we are admitting our dreams, I had one last night too!! Was there a full moon that we were all having marathon nightmares? My race was an adventure race too! I was late arriving to the start line too!! The difference was my course was a steeple-chase course of sorts, but when you jump over the hurdle you plunge 30 feet into a pool of muck! :crazy2: Then wade through until you can start running again on the other side.
Crazy, I know.
MelR, no I haven't purchased a rain coat yet. Steve, I will die if it rains! I hate the rain. Hubby has a rain vest that I may use and he will definitely have extra socks and shoes for me to change along the course.

It was a new moon here when I started work at 4.10am this morning!!!! But there's definitely something in the air *** I had a dream too - for some reason I'd decided to practise run the marathon the day before the event itself but got to the start without my drinks and ipod and went into complete meltdown - for an equally odd reason, the start was next to my hotel room - which seemed to consist of a single bed laid out inside a cafe and I was running round shouting at all these people sitting there with their foamy cappacinos that I'd spent a year of my life on this thing and I was not going to fail now - despite the fact that a) I was running it a day early and b) unlike everyone else's dreams I had on full gym kit and shoes so could quite easily have run anyway. Can I swap 'shouty foam' girl for Cam's licky bear?
That's it for me today, got lots and lots to do, including working out how to fit in 10 mile training run with 3 mile fancy dress run that the running club do tomorrow night, I don't want to miss either but am not sure how to do both, I definitely need a clone. Helen

Hey guys!! I'm getting on here late today, I actually had some work to do this morning. Shocking, I know. :rotfl: Like Stephen said, my run yesterday was not the best. Actually, if you take the weather out of the equation (pouring rain for the first 4 miles and then being so cold that I was shaking for the remaining 4 miles), my run wasn't too bad. I ran (well r4/w2) 8 miles in 1:36 with a pace of 12:04, my lap function is acting up again on my Garmin, so I don't know my splits. On the last mile when I thought I was going to die, I just kept telling myself, "only 5 more miles and that's the half". :goodvibes
I'm glad I haven't had any marathon nightmares yet, I've actually only 2 marathon dreams. One dream was I was running through Cinderella Castle and the second dream I had was a couple of weeks ago, I dreamt that I finished the half in a very specific time. I don't want to say what my time was, just in case, but it was a good time and I would be psyched if I finished then. :hourglass
Oh, did anyone freak out this weekend when you realized that the marathon is in 6 weeks?? :earseek: :earseek: :earseek:
Minnie-- :grouphug: I hope everything works out for you. At least now you know what the problem is and you can fix it. Do you think we'll see you in 2007? ;)
Liz--Prayers for you and your family. Know that your Wish family is praying for you during this difficult time.
Christa (and Bree)-- :wizard: :wizard: this weekend for your marathon. I laughed out loud when you talked about drinking Diet Coke before runs. That is SO me, I hardly ever drink water before runs. In fact yesterday before my 8 miler, I had a large hazlenut coffee from Panera and a 20 oz. Diet Coke. I wonder how fast I would be if I actually drank water?? ;)
Harry-- :wave2: Welcome! I'm glad you found us (you'll be glad too!), if you haven't discovered it already, this is a wealth of information and support here.
There is so much I want to respond to, but to be perfectly honest, I don't feel like going back and reading the thread again. So, I'll just say :wave2: to everyone and wish you happy training!!
Oh, and   for all of us STILL waiting for our race packets!!

Hello all!!
Harry- Welcome!! :) Glad you have found our little group.
Everyone's nightmare stories are cracking me up. I had the one where I overslept for it a few months back, but nothing as interesting as you all. :rotfl2:
Minnie- :grouphug: I hope things turn around for you soon. We'll be there at the starting line in '07 with you for sure!!! Don't get discouraged! :cheer2:
Well, I successfully got back to running today. I did 4 miles in 35:04 or about 8:47/mile pace. I was supposed to go 48 minutes at 5 run/1 walk, but I just couldn't take that many laps on the indoor track here, so I decided to go for a distance goal instead. I split the first two miles right around 8:00/mile-- I just could seem to slow the engine down-- kind of like putting high octane in a moped. :) This, of course, was a mistake... and coupled with a really heavy lunch, being a little dehydrated and the heaters in the building being on full blast made for a very tough second two miles. I'm running outside tomorrow for sure. Bad weather or not. :goodvibes
I think that's about all for now.
Happy training all!

My current race nightmare is that I won't receive my packet, then after training for an entire year, I'll go up to the Expo and they won't let me do the half :worried:
I called today and they were supremely unhelpful. The guy told me that the packets got sent out late and some people were still getting them. I asked if I should call back if I don't have it in the next couple weeks. He said no, that we don't really need the info in the packet to pickup stuff at the Expo, it just makes it easier for them. He said as long as they have my registration, I'll be able to get my stuff. Needless to say, he did not inspire much confidence.
Could someone that has the packet please share what it is that you got that will be needed at the Expo? If I don't see mine by the end of the week, I'll be back on the phone to request the magic paper that I'm missing. I'm pretty bummed about all this...cut my run short tonight cause it didn't seem worth it :sad1:

Sara - I'm surely not taking an ice bath if it is like childbirth (not that it hurt b/c i did not do the natural thing, but i clearly don't like pain)
It touches me that I was included in your dream. I have had Marathon nightmare too! Bree, Ron, DH and I were running the marathon almost to the finish. We were doing great, like a seven MPM. (That is when I should have known it was a dream. :teeth: ) I looked at the others and said, "we are doing so well, why don't we stop an get something to eat." We stopped and ate pizza. By the time we finished, we had been swept. :earseek: OUT OF CONTROL!

I use a foot wheel b/c I get knots in my feet after long runs. At a foot clinic--the podiatrist says they are from the fascia--or from something...but I don't have any lingering difficulties.
Anyway--the wheel that i used was actually developed for patients with PF. I cannot personally attest to the benefits when you suffer with PF--but for my issue...it works wonders--those knots come out and my feet are all :goodvibes . If I don't do it---by the end of the day--my feet feel terrible.
Here's a link:
http://www.worldcycling.com/merchant.mvc?Category_Code=MASSAGE&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=STK3
It actually helps you do myofacial release on your feet--which can help relieve the problem.
Since you said you didn't hurt after the run--but the day after...I wonder if using this wheel post run...will prevent the problem from cropping up the next day.
Word of warning though--when you are on a tender spot--it will hurt...rolling back and forth over the tender spot helps--until you can get to the point of tolerating stopping on the spot. I had a friend try it--he couldn't handle it. :confused3 . I guess I'm just used to trigger point torture--so I know that a minute of suffering--will lead to relief.

Wow I have been out running around all day & have missed alot! Your dream stories are hilarious :rotfl: I loved your adventure race Cam, maybe you should suggest that at the Expo as an innaugural event for next year. WDW has marathons, 15k, tri's why not adventure races through the resorts :)
I have no doubt that after reading all these stories I will have some sort of dream tonight. I am in shock that in less than 6 weeks I get to meet all of you and do this cool race. I cant wait to get me a "run Disney" shirt.
My mom just got her packet today & my WISH buddy hasnt gotten her packet yet either. So those that dont have it yet, dont give up. You aren't alone.
Do the 5k's get a packet or do they just go to the Expo for their number? DH & DS are doing the 5K.
Great job on training everyone. I did a little xt yesterday at the roller skating rink with DS. Also my left arm got strength training holding DS4 up!

Hi everyone,
Injuries and nightmares seem to be the order of the day here! :earseek:
Good luck to those battling to overcome the nagging injuries.
I went to the PT today and guess what he told me? I pulled/strained my quad. Duh!!! I knew that 7 weeks ago! What can I do to make it better?
Well, the PT guy was nice (but not a "hottie" like someone else's on here). I had ultrasound and electric stim, did some exercises and stretches, then iced it down. He told me to do the stretches every day; I could cut out the ice baths (thank God!!!). Just switch to ice and heat 4 times a day (15 min. each).
He also told me I could keep with my routine of x-training and walking. Told me to use a mini-trampoline for running. Start out slow and build up to where I can run w/o pain. Then start to mix in some runs during my outdoor walks.
At this point, it is all about my pain tolerance. I'm going to go back once a week from now until I leave for Disney in January just for the electric stim. he said that should help increase the healing. (although I could go up to 3x a week, I just can't fit that in the schedule).
At least it wasn't bad news!

I didn't realize it was so common--the cause is a very weak core structure--at least for me traced back 5.5 years ago to my first pregnancy when I let my ab muscles go lax (I mean--cognizantly told myself--ooh--I"m pregnant...relax those tummy muscles so I don't squash the baby--yeah, I'm a genious. :rotfl2: ).
So you might be saying hello to a new Pilates regime when you are better. ;)
ETA: if you get the sacro wedgy--be very careful in using it--you have to be on it just right--the first day I was on it wrong (can you say--ouch!)...I took it into the PT so I could learn how to use it properly--and then it made a big difference.

Thanks for all of the advice. I am going to make sure I always have an incline set on the TM (I do this on a periodic basis but not consistently) and I am going to buy and try a few gels/sports drinks. Maybe I will see an improvement with my performance and certainly I will be better prepared for the race :)

Remember my dream yesterday????? Well.... apparently I slept like a baby last night, because I really did sleep in and I missed my speedwork!!!! I was late getting the boy to preschool (he was so worried he would miss calendar time!) Phil is off today (after rounds) so we will probably do something outside. Maybe I can get him to do my speedwork with me or we'll go mt. biking or kayaking. It is cold and I think the wind is picking up, so we probably won't boat, but it might be fun!
Carrie - You enter what you eat every day? Has this been beneficial? I thought about doing that, since some days I can barely make 50 mins. & other days I feel like I could run forever. Do you know if I would contribute that to what I ate the day before or a few days before, does anyone know? Don't laugh, but I usually have a slice of eggplant pizza from a local pizza joint on Fri nights & then have 1/2 a slice of plain (don't ask). Anyway, my LRs on Sat are great. Is that because of the pizza, or the pasta I usually eat on THurs. nights. HELP, anyone that knows anything about nutrition, I need help. I've also noticed that if I meat the night before a run, the run's no good.

I discovered something new that might be helpful to others. Don't lose a lot of weight and expect to maintain your endurance. Not being happy with my WL this past few months I decided to get serious and follow Weight Watchers to a "T" last week. I did exactly what they call for, ate my daily points, my 35 weekly "flex points" and all of my activity points and lost 6 pounds!!!!!! (Yes this is over Thanksgiving). I came to the conclusion that either WW isn't designed for endurance athletes or I have a super high metabolism. The real catch is they only allow you to add 50% of the calories you burn during exercise (activity points). That's all well and good if you burn an extra 200-300 calories at a time, not 1,000-2,000! I'm guessing this sudden weight loss was part of why my 12 miler was tough last weekend. Yesterday's 6 mile TM wasn't really tough but I was sweating profusely (like twice as much as my normal profuse sweating) and my HR was really high (165-172) everytime I checked. It took 8 minutes of walking to bring my HR back down below 110. That is totally unacceptable.
So a warning: Don't panic during taper and decide to diet right before the race! Guess those donuts are good for me after all. ;)

Jodi
Jodi, I'm no expert but I do know that your best runs will be when your muscles/liver are as full of glycogen as possible. That means the night before a morning run should provide adequate carbs and protein. But just what is adequate? That's really a trial and error determination. I have surprisingly found that overeating the night before can lead to a good run (as long as the tummy/bathroom troubles don't arise from it). I don't recommend overeating, but undereating seems to be worse. All the running advice seems to be geared towards eating lots of carbs but I'm a firm believer in adequate protein, too.
Do you keep a food log? You might want to do that. Write down everything you eat, when you eat it and what your eneregy level feels like before, after, and a couple of hours after.
Good luck!
Sunny
Sunny - Thanks, I'm keeping a log starting today. Perhaps the pizza carbs, plus the protein from the cheese is what does it for me. Also, when I eat meat, I hardly ever have bread or anything with it, so maybe that's what's missing. Thanks for the advice

I think that's a non-American way of saying running in costume. Of course, depending on the costume, you could be running in stillettos! :rotfl:
I saw the doc this morning. The x-rays don't show any fractures :cool1:, so he thinks I have aggravated the ligaments that attach my metatarsil (sp?) to the rest of my foot. Luckily the doc had done a marathon before, and understood my need to continue training. He suggested the elliptical for the next 2-3 weeks. So tomorrow I'll try 16 miles on the elliptical. Sunny - confession time again!!! I can totally relate to the high metabolism and calorie intake influncing endurance. I am a stick (i know, waaah, waaah). Anyway, I have no reserves and I really have to suck down the calories during the endurance events. I eat so many gels during an adventure race it is unbelievable. The running long distances really kills me b/c i'm buring so many calories that at some point I get to where I can't keep up and if I work out too much I start feeling depressed and basically beat down. I'm kindof' dreading this week for that very reason. I just did my speedwork with phil (what a sweetie)3miles. Tomorrow afternoon (that is bible study/mocha day) I have a 10 mile with EC and then thurs is the 20 mile LR. I am going to have to eat and veg this weekend. I think you are right about the protien and I have a feeling I am not getting enough! I am not a big meat eater, but maybe i'll go out this weekend and have a big steak and sweet potato to celebrate the completion of a hard week!

Woo hoo lacool! That is great news!
jodi - I *try* to log what I eat in a program I have iin my Palm daily. This is my best weight loss solution.
Sunny - I try to eat 100-300 calories less than I burn, if I can do so without being hungry. Low blood sugar and hungry is bad. Only adding 50% of what I burn off excersing would kill me.
FYI - I did have a race dream/nightmare. Got to the corrals and realized I had not chip. Dh didn't either. SOmehow got ships, but realized I had to pee/ CM said too close to the race start, no way could I go pee. Luckily I woke up after that. Leigh Ann-- I had that exact same experience! I was in just dozing off in surgery and someone commented on my HR and said "she must be an athlete" and someone else responded, "she's a runner". I have to say that is probably the single most exciting compliment/comment I have received during this journey! Kudos to you!!!! :cheer2:
MelR & Jodi-- I hardly ever eat meat. But I do eat a lot of egg beaters, tofu, boca burgers, legumes, and whey either in the form of protein bars, powder or fat-free ricotta cheese, and non-fat yogurt. With the exception of donut delirium, I always have some protein when I eat. I even use gels and 'ade that have 5 g of protein in them (Accelerade).

Yes--dieting during training is bad news. You have to fuel your body. I did weight watchers at the beginning of training way back when. I just did too much and was constantly starving. I don't think it is a program for very active people. I hated going to meetings and here people saying they could eat the minimum and walk 2 miles a day and not starve at all. :confused3 I'd like to see them run 6 miles and then check back in with me. pirate:

Hey all - I'm loving the odd translation experience's we've had over the last year, and yes, fancy dress is running in costume. The first year I went in full 80's garb (with leg warmers etc), last year I went as Tigger (complete with orange trainers, hat with ears - and tail) but this year I think I may have to miss out as I don't think I can fit in outfit and 10 miler.
And Sunny, I tried Weight WAtchers for six weeks last year while training for a half, hated every second, felt dreadful the whole time, lost the grand sum of 2lbs - and, when I asked how to increase points in the days before the race to avoid blowing the little progress I'd made but also stop myself fainting half way round I was told 'WW wasn't for people like me' so 'the person like me' took her money elsewhere!!!!! I do think it's aimed at average exercisers, not endurance runners -and from what I know of nutrition, eating that few points without making up the difference you're expending while running could actually slow your metabolism (though with the cut arms you've got you've probably got enough muscle mass to counteract things). Just my HO though.
Anyway, gotta go - personal trainer in California needing me to call him. The world is sometimes a very small place! Helen

What a dumb leader!
I usually do my own version of WW. I lost 60+ pounds with them so I really can't knock them too much. For me its all about the accountability (although I hate having to admit that). Usually I eat about 45 points per day plus activity points. They tell me I should be eating 27 points per day plus activity.
I have had the opposite experience of Lisa. When I tell people I eat 45 points a day plus APs they nearly faint and turn green with envy :teeth:! One time a leader was marvelling over a guy she had in another class that earned 10 APs in ONE day. I scoffed and said "I often earn over 20 in one day!!!!" Oh its so fun to be an endurance athlete :teeth: :teeth: :teeth: (ok, often really is just on the really long LRs)
I've never run a costume run before. Sounds fun. Guess that's gotta go on the "to do" list!

Sunny -every october there is a mud run 5k in Little Rock Arkansas, you are encouraged to wear a costume! It is usually the same weekend as Raid the Rock adventure race, so i've never done it, but i'll bet it is fun!
Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm starting my "food" journal today. I've given up trying to lose any weight before the race. I was hoping to dump 10lbs. or so, but I'm always hungry. Ugh. Last night I had to air pop popcorn @ about 9:30 'cause I was hungry & craving salt big time.
I wanna run in a costume!!!
MelR- My husband has the same problem as you. He literally gets the shakes in the a.m. about an hour or 2 after breakfast if he doesn't eat again. Talk about fueling your body, he really needs to. He's found that the protein shakes work really well for him. Whey protein, milk & a bananna takes care of his hypoglycemia & stop the shakes. You should try some form of this maybe. When he's hungry & hasn't eaten in a while he also becomes easily agitated & irritable (I call it male PMS, which he doesn't appreciate). Does this also happen to you?
No one has called me an athlete yet. :guilty: :rotfl:

What exactly is a protien shake. Is it yummie? Can I buy one or do I have to make it? I do get the shakes if I don't eat. I have gotten really consistant about eating breakfast in the am. I always have oatmeal and a mocha (as we know, chocolate is good for me!!) I even do this b/4 my long runs. I forgot to mention that I do get some protien from sushi :flower:
I may need to find one in preparation for this week of torture!!!! Especially b/c my mom is coming this weekend and will really test my endurance by making me go shopping with her! :crazy2:

I was lucky to find this site and group. I am so happy to be included and I am most curious about the history of the group. How did it get started, have many of you run together before. Will there be any way to identify group members during the 1/2 and the marathon. These questions are probably all answered on prior threads and I will spend time tonight doing some homework by reading old messages.
I should probably add to my profile. I am from Philadelphia. Perhaps some of you will come here the first Sunday in May for our 10 miler, The Broad Street Run. It is spectacular.
HARRY
Harry, I’ve been trying to answer you from your post so many pages ago. I am so glad of your luck to have found our group and this site. We will be further enriched by your participation I am certain! (How did you find us I wonder?)
I will give history from my perspective. I participated in the half this past January 2005, our first WISH “event” if you will. I am not exactly certain how/who began it all. I tried to search, but the search did not go back as far as I needed so I gave up on that.
WISH was created to assist those seeking a healthy lifestyle and the interchange of support and information. (WISH=We’re Inspired to Stay Healthy) Someone wisely thought what about a goal for many of us, one we would NEVER have tried on our own. That spark of light gained momentum and turned into the 2005 WISH Walker group. Our goal was to walk the ½ marathon. None of our group started out as “runners” or ever thought of anything that daunting. In the beginning I think most of us figured that only the fastest, elitist persons participated in all types of race events. We decided that we had a year to work at it and a lot can happen in a year, oh yes! We said that the worst that could happen is that we would train and become healthier in the process. In that time we had never met face to face but became friends through our struggles, successes and support. It was a journey we all took together, like we are doing right now with our current group. We had people joining all the time as the training and the common bond caused us to grow and learn.
Some of our group has chosen to wear shirts designed by some of our members. Our color for DIS is “lime green” so thus the color of the shirts will be something close to that. Some of the DISboards members you may see at the parks with lime green something as a way of identifying our affiliation with the boards. I wear a lime green shoe lace attached to my waist pack whilst trekking the parks. I’ve actually met many DISers when they asked of my “greenness.” It is fun. I think as we get closer we may have some way of developing a “name tag” for Trails End dinner/picture ops that we will make and bring with us. Not sure if anyone is going to be adding anything else to the attire if they did not get a lime green t-shirt. That is yet to be posted. Someone last year made lime green scarfs that we were given at the Trails End dinner to either carry partly and discard or all the way to the end. Someone else brough "glow sticks" to help us find each other in the wee hours of the morning as we gathered. Logistics will be worked out as we get even closer to the event.
Hope I answered your questions at least some. Sorry if it is too long. I tried to give the “short” of it.
This year’s group began with I think this post and our posting has progressed weekly until we will culminate with meeting face to face either at Trails End or on Race Day(s).

Protein shake (WHATEVER) I went to walmart and got some of that stuff. That is not a shake. It may pass as bad chocolate milk, but I would not call it a shake. That implies that there is icecream and vanilla extract involved! I would say is should accurately be termed a "protein stir!"

Melissa-- not all "shakes" are created equal! I hate rice protein, can tolerate soy protein, and actually like whey protein. When I make a "shake" from scratch I always put in frozen fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc). It gives it that frozen "shake" feeling. But by all means, when counting calories isn't an issue, heap in the ice cream and vanilla! Live it up :Pinkbounc Have you ever tried Slim Fast? Not as a meal replacement, but as a meal supplement. There's different types of those, too. I think the regular (more sugar) style is probably the most yummy. Make sure they are nice and cold.
A mud run in a costume? Well I would look and feel just like DS! What fun!

Just checking in and looking for some suggestions to my problem. I have been feeling pretty weak for about 10 days now and today ran a 40 minute tempo. It was pretty tough but made it through. My heart rate was almost 180 when I finished and then even 5 minutes later it had only come down to 140, 10 minutes later it was rovering around 125-130.
Tonight, I feel just spent. My legs arn't tired, but my whole being is just wiped out. I don't feel like I am coming down with anything, I just have the feeling I used to feel when we ran a million wind sprints at basketball practice, kind of nauseated, dizzy and weak. DH says this is a classic case of over training? Any other ideas? What should I be doing or eating to help this? Do I just need to rest? I have a 20 miler slated for Friday, I will definitely rest the next two days.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. It is an honor and pleasure to be included in this group.
I found this group just by playing on the Internet. I was searching things connected to the Disney World Marathon and landed on this site. I discovered the marathon threads and started reading and found it so exciting I asked to be included.
My running and marathon story is a little different. I am 41 and have been running for about 10 years. I have run 5 marathons most recently Philadelphia 2004. I have been planning for Disney World 06 for about 9 months. This summer/fall I felt the plantar fasciitis start in my right foot. I tried to make it dissappear by running harder and more miles. I never said I was real bright. The pain became intolerable and I was in a cast for most of October. I am just now showing the signs of some recovery. I have run very little for 3 months and this is unusual as I was a 5-6 day a week runner.
The plan for the marathon was the race followed by a week vacation with my DW and our 3 children, DS (9) and DDS (twins 6). I think I can run with the pain and complete the marathon, however, I will likely have significant pain and difficulty walking during our vacation. I reached a decision today. I am going to skip the Disney World Marathon. I want to enjoy a wonderful week with our family and all of the magic of being together at Disney World. It will be almost impossible if I run as the injury is not fully healed and I am not properly trained.
I love to run and now that I have found this group I want to share in the excitement all the more. I know I have made the right decision. We are going to skip the marathon and we will go on our vacation later in January. Our children have a few days off from school and it will be a wonderful time for our Disney World vacation.
There will be other marathons in my future. I am going to look at Marine Corps or Chicago for October 06. I want to fully recover and get back to running.
It is dissapointing I won't be there to share with all of your excitement. I hope it is ok if I continue to hang around here and serve as head cheerleader. There is such spirit and enthusiasm on this board and I want to offer words of support and encouragement.

Harry- definately stick around. Many of us plan on being here for 2007 too!
We have a couple of people that have had to make that hard decision too and they pop in every once in a while. I feel very lucky to have found this group as well.
Jodi-let me 2nd what everyone else has said YOU ARE AN ATHLETE. How many other people do you know that has even thought about doing a 1/2 or full marathon? But I know what you mean, mostly because of my previously sedentary lifestyle I have a very high resting heart rate. ( I think also because I am a little high strung too :goodvibes ) I cant wait until I have a heart rate lower than DH (he is a very calm, laid back person)
Sunny- that must have been really cool of you to hear, especially for medical people. What a cool complement!
I'm going to have to squeeze in my walk today between working at DS7 library at school & picking up DS4 from preschool.
DS7 is training to do the WDW 5k & this weekend he will have his first 5k. I am doing it with him so I wont get to PR, but I think it will be really cool to do it together. He has also decided he wants to do the Tour de France when he grows up. He loves Lance Armstrong. How cool is that :goodvibes

Harry, sorry your injury is going to prevent your participation. Plan on next January. If you haven't run this one you will love it! Hope to see you in the 2007.
Colleen I'd say rest. I'd also say doc appointment just to be certain. You don't want to mess with heart rate stuff.
TiffJ, Wow! DS doing his first 5k! Hope he is thrilled with it. That is quite a distance for a youngster. Have fun enjoying his first.
MelR, I'm with you on the protein shake review.
Lisa, you are such an inspiration and a wealth of information to everyone. I just had to say.
Minnie, hope that you will continue to heal and be with us in 2007.
I must say I have been enjoying the dream stories. I have not had any as yet. I guess it is b/c I haven't decided if I will be capable of the whole thing yet, so I can't even have those bad dreams about it.
I have been playing on the dreaded TM. Coming along a bit better. Will see how I feel after the weekend and the mostest longest I will have ever gone at one time. I am praying now that the snow holds off here so I don't have to do the 18 miles on the TM.

Oh the dream sequences are just too funny :rotfl2: I think if we put Cam's bear in the frothy cafe and stick Melissa in her port-a-jon right in the middle will have a smash hit :rotfl:
Guess those donuts are good for me after all. ;)
Sunny
Sunny - Thanks for your words of wisdom! This is so true and now I am glad I eat like a cow! It makes me run better! :rotfl:

Colleen...just a thought, but you might need to get some labwork checked, just to be sure. Anemia and thyroid come to mind from the symptoms you're describing. Probably should have your electrolytes looked at too.
What do y'all think about continuing on after the 2006 races as the WISH Walking/Running Club? That would cover all of the various races we all participate in throughout the year, Disney or otherwise, with the ultimate goal each year to do the WDW Half/Full/Goofy.

Good morning everyone! :sunny: Glad that training is going so well, we're only 38/39 days out. :earseek: I ran on the dreaded treadmill last night, but it wasn't so bad. I did 48 minutes at 4r/w2 and I ran 4.06 miles. Is anyone else amazed that our short runs are just as long or longer than our long runs used to be?? Stephen and I were talking last night and we both agreed that a year ago if someone told us that we would be training for a full and a half marathon, we would be rolling on the ground and laughing. But honestly, I couldn't imagine doing anything else, we both love running, and hope to continue to run and prepare for various marathons and distance races in the future. Running and exercising are the ultimate "cancer fighters" and having a family history of cancer, heart problems, and high blood pressure, getting my steps in is so important to me. I know, I'm preaching to the choir here, but I just had to say that. :)
Colleen--I'm not an expert, but I think maybe you need a couple of days of rest. And get to the doctor, even if it's nothing, you're better off knowing than ignoring the problem and sacrificing your health.
MelR--I agree wholeheartedly with you, if it doesn't have ice cream, you better not be calling it a shake!!
Mel--I love your idea of a running/walking club! I know there are different races I plan on doing in 2006 and it would be awesome to have everyone's support and advice. Plus, I don't want to lose contact with everyone. By the way, Stephen and I are packetless too. :guilty:
Tiff--That is great that you are getting your son into exercising at a young age. And he idolizes Lance Armstrong? That's awesome! Stephen and I don't have any kids (yet ;) ), but we both agree that we want to teach them healthy habits at a very young age.
Harry--Sorry that you won't be joining us for the marathon, but I think you're making the right decision. Better off letting your body heal completely and missing one marathon than running the marathon and doing permanent damage to your feet. (Can you tell from my post that I tend to err on the side of caution?? :teeth: )
Carrie--I know what you mean about trying to catch up on old posts, when we were in Disney in October, it took me almost the whole day to catch up on a week and a half. Stephen will kill me for saying this, but I hope to not to be able to run in 2007. Hopefully I'll be waddling around. ;) :teeth: I know you said you're not a huge Lions fan, but are people dancing in the streets now that Mariucci is gone? I was embarrassed for the Lions and their fans during the Thanksgiving Day game.
I better get back to work, things are going to be busy here for the next couple of days. Tomorrow starts our Dealer Meeting, and all of our dealers from around the world come in for meetings and to see new products. It's fun, but chaotic having everyone here. Good luck with training everyone, we're almost there!!

I have a qiuck question for all the WISHers out there!
As you know, I am doing the Charlotte Marathon on Saturday....Well my question is.....
Should I run the marathon at race pace?
OR
Should I run my scheduled 10 Friday then count the Saturday marathon as a training run? I was supposed to do 22 this Saturday anyway.
Ron, my coach, says it is up to me. I am not overtraining or in danger of anything no matter what I choose. But I cannot decide!
HELP!
Christa
Good Morning Everyone!! Thank you soooo much  I really feel like an athlete now. You guys are so supportive, :grouphug: I've always considered myself "lazy", maybe that's all behind me. I guess I won't believe it until I cross the finish line for the 1/2.

Mel- Love the idea
MelR- Sunny's right about the protein shakes, load up on the calories
Christa - I don't know, can you wait & see how you feel the day b-4 & the a.m. of???
Harry - Good choice
Tiff - My 10 y/o son is planning to run/walk the WDW 5K as well w/ his grandfather. He's a video game couch potato, but excited to get this done. I'm trying to encourage him to be more active.

Krista - I don't know how to clarify. It's not that I'm not a Lion's fan, but I don't get psyched for the season, because it's better not to get your hopes up. Mariucci is from MI. I wanted him to work. Thanksgiving was awful and I think he was just deparate to do something. We've had 2 or 3 coaches under MIllan (President) none of them have done anything. Most people here think he has to go before anything can happen. So, no, they are not dancing in the streets in Mo-town. :(

::yes:: Most people feel like they fired the wrong guy. Old man Ford must have some kind of boy-crush on Matt Millan, because I don't see any justification at all for signing him to another five years like they did. Thank goodness for college football, otherwise between the Lions and the Tigers this would be one sad sports state. (But I disgress....)
Krista- I totally agree about our former long runs now being short runs. The other day i told my roomate I was frustrated because I could only get through 4 miles and he said "Only?!?!" :confused3
Mel- I love the idea of keeping the Running/Walking Club going. I can't tell you how this group has helped my training along and I really want to get improve over the course of the next year.
Re: Protein shakes: You really have to shop around to find a good one. Usually the one's that are Ready-To-Drink are better than the powdered ones, but they are far more expensive. YMMV, though.
Yesterday I actually did my 40 minutes of crosstraining. It was wonderful!! :goodvibes Seriously! When I run I concentrate so hard on mileage and pace and form that it felt good to just jump on a stepmill and a bike and read Time magazine. 48 minutes (5/1) today and I'm going to do the whole thing no matter what.
I think that's all for now.
Happy Training all!

Colleen-- Mel has good advice to get it checked out. Hopefully its just what many of us seem to have hit along the way. I hit it a couple of weeks ago, I called it a full body mutiny. My mind was still in training mode but the entire bod said "Nope, ain't gonna do it" and it terrified me. I recovered after 2 days of total rest. I mean TOTAL, I didn't do any more than walk from my car to the office and back. I hope rest gets you back on track.
Christa-- Goofy is a huge undertaking, I think I would hold back a bit on the Charlotte marathon and treat it more like training so you are peaking for Goofy. Good luck, I can't wait to hear the race stories from you and Bree :cheer2: :wizard:
I took a vacation day to sit and wait for my new computer to arrive. I had to rearrange my bedroom and put together a new desk for it, so I'm calling that cross training :teeth: I hope to get out to the Y tonight for a good MLR. Carrie and Solo--I'm sorry that the Lions organization just can't seem to straighten themselves out. The Bengals went through that a few years ago with the Brown family, they kept hiring coaches, wouldn't let them actually do their job and the Bengal's record reflected that. When Marvin Lewis was hired, he must have made some pretty strong demands because the Brown family pretty much leaves him alone. This year is really coming together for the Bengals, unfortunately for the Steelers, but I still feel good that we'll win the division. :)
Edited to Add--I hope everything works out, I'm sort of a Lions fan. Stephen has family in MI (Grand Rapids and Mount Pleasant) and they are huge Lions fans. Since we have NFL Sunday Ticket and I can watch any game I want to, I generally root for teams that people I know are fans of. Except for the Ravens, my Mom could be a Ravens fan and I would still root against them. Unless they are playing the Bengals--there a lot of stipulations to football cheering!! :rotfl: Okay, sorry about the football break, back to running and walking. :teeth:

Harry- congrats for making a hard decision based on long term and family rather than the shorter term gratification. I looked last night after reading your post and the entry for Marine Corps opens up May 16 I think. I worked medical at the race this year and it was very well done. I'm glad that the race entry doesn't open until so late since I won't be able to make an informed decision about doing it until after April 7th when I find out for sure where and more importantly what order I'll be doing clinical rotations next year.
Colleen- yes, it sounds like classic overtraining but... err on the side of caution and getting checked out may not be a bad idea.
Christa- if Charlotte isn't your goal race this year, it probably wouldn't hurt to treat it like a long training run and do the 10 the day before. However...if there is any chance of you getting caught up in the moment and pushing harder than training pace on the marathon, you might want to consider not doing the 10. Good luck either way.
Hey solo- I actually did my cross training yesterday too.
I've been bad and often treating x-train day like an extra rest day but brought my tri bike, indoor trainer, and a TV/DVD combo back to ME with me after T-day. My new toy this weekend was a new HRM. I had/have a Polar 710s but it was misbehaving by early last academic year and I think it needs new batteries. That requires sending the unit pieces into Polar USA and paying 30/unit. In addition, its always been too big for my little wrist(I wear the Garmin on my upper arm for this reason) and its not set up to talk with my Mac OS computer. So I got a 30 Lap midsize Ironman HRM by Timex. It's kind of weird to go back to using a HRM again after having not been and particularly since I'm kind of already in shape rather than just getting back into shape. I haven't done a max test since I was in grad school so I'll probably try and do one after the marathon so I can accurately set the zones for at least one sport.
I like the idea of the group continuing after the race. I don't know if I'll get to do 2007 but am definitely planning on going Goofy in 2008. I'm also anticipating the month of Feb being a challenge to get through because I'll be post marathon but pre-12 week half ironman program. I use this group as accountability as I rarely let myself post(but always keep up reading) unless I've worked out that day.
MelR- when my sister was swimming competitively she used to have some favorite protein drinks, hopefully she'll see this and chime in with what they were. She drank them because she was 100 pounds soaking wet and she was a very picky eater.
Tiff(and up to 3 other people)- PM me the week prior to the marathon and remind me to bring the Le Tour de France 02 pins that Trek sent me after I got my Project One Madone SL. I really don't have any use for them(4) so I'll distribute them to people that might be interested such as a kid that likes Lance and wants to race the Tour.
Got to go back to school now. 4 hours of lecture but I'll be surfing the web for 2 of it. I get nothing out of the instructor but I'm on AV duty so I've got to be there.

Shirt Update:
Well, here's the scoop. They were shupposed to be shipped to me no later than the 9th of December. Now it's a "hopefully, next week, but no later than the 14th." I will ship them out no later than the 19th. I will try very hard for teh 17th (saturday), but I will not likely get them until after work on the 16th.
So, you should get them btwn the 21st or 22nd. I believe priority is 2 to 3 days. If this ship date does not work for you, let me know. I can do a rush shipment or delivery them to Mel to give you at Trails End. Thanks for your patience.
I can't cause a big fuss, because we don't have time to go elsewhere.

Darn Disney--an evening marathon sounded exciting. ;)
Please note that in the 2006 WALT DISNEY WORLD® Marathon Weekend Program, the time for the Runners Start for the Marathon was incorrectly listed as “6:00 p.m.” on page 5 and page 12. This was an error. The Runners Start for the Marathon on Sunday, January 8, 2006 will be at 6:00 a.m. We apologize for any confusion that this may have caused. Again, the Runners Start for the Marathon on Sunday, January 8, 2006 will be at 6:00 a.m.
Seriously--wonder how many will make an oops arrival.

HELP!
Christa
IMHO--it depends. If it will drive you nuts not to do it...I'd go ahead and run race pace. If you are having any set back issues at the moment that are pending..I'd say leisurely run.

Christa - I'd say GO FOR IT!!!!!!!! You know I have been the queen of other races while training. You have been doing plenty of the back to back LR's anyway. If you are really wanting to know how you could do doing an all out marathon at the peak of your training, then let'r'rip. Now, I will say that EC (you know, marathon queen, crazy running girl) says that your bod begins to break down after 20 miles and that you need a recovery period, but you'll have time to recover before goofy anyway (right?) One of the things I think about it that I may never have these opportunities again, if there is no real reason not to, then why not?
It seems like whatever you choose, you have nothing to loose. Good luck with your decision. GOOD LUCK WITH THE MARATHON TOO!!!! You better be posting pics shortly thereafter!

Hi, everyone! Just checking in after a really lousy day in court. My training has been a little different lately, but still going. Monday night I did an hour of FIRM videos, including one for core strengthening. I think it was called ab sculpt or something and included lots of back stuff. Taking Lisa's and my doctor's advice very seriously about that. Also did a cardio one, in the hopes that will help the breathlessness that I still have once in a while (leftover from 10 years of heart condition?)
Last night I did 40 minutes on the bike, 30 minutes elliptical and 30 minutes treadmill (15:00 pace steady!) since it was pouring outside! ICK!!! I can't believe I exercised for 1 hour 40 minutes! :earseek: The snickers marathon bar made a huge difference for my energy level. Thanks to all who recommended it!
Mel -- I love the idea of a WISH walking/running club. I depend on all of you so much to keep me accountable and encouraged! Not sure how motivated I'll be in January, but I am looking forward to starting the training process all over again for the DL 1/2.
Harry -- I am sooo happy that you have such a great reason for making a difficult decision. You and your family will have such an awesome time, and without fighting marathon weekend crowds, too!
Have a great night, all!

So I go to the gym for my 48 minutes of fun...and they have a police chase on Foxnews in southern california--like a dumb butt this guy stops about 4 times (and then eventually restarts again)--including stopping at an intersection to try to steal another vehicle (live tv!).
Now--didn't appear that anyone was hurt--but man that was the fastest 48 minutes on the treadmill in my life. I kept thinking--I hope it ends soon, b/c I can't go forever. It ended just after I got off. Now the California Highway Patrol owes me a big thank you for it not being my long run day. Had I known the guy was just waiting for me to finish--I gladly would have paused to give him time to get out of his vehicle, get arrested without incident, and then resume running.

Cam - Sorry about your bad court day. I just found out I may have to do a deposition fo rwork. Yuck!
Lisa - Woo hoo on teh LR!
I keep forgettign to tell you my TM story. It was super icy T-day and I needed to do 45 min. I was at my parents so, no problem, I'll use the TM. After 15 min, I wanted to quit. I was way hot adn that darn timer in front of me drove me batty. If I ever use it again, I'll put a towel over it. Their speed had to be off, as it was in KPH, which should be highr than mph at the same pace, but I know I was not doing 20 minute miles. :(
Then, teh lions game came on. At least something a little mroe to keep my attention. Well, it was on TV and Jimmy eat wWorld was on teh mp3, so I was kicking but. Then Joey threw and interception, which was run back way far and I forot where I was and darned near fell off!! :rotfl: Now, had I fallen off, could I have sued the Lions? ;)
So, :worship: to those of you who use TMs. I don't think I could do it. NO WAY for LRs. It would be a nice option to the ice and the slush on some days, though.

Lynn-that would be awsome! DS would love it , he loves pins. Thanks a bunch. He was asking today how old you had to be to do the Tour. Also DH found out that when Lance was 9 he came in 2nd in the Ironkids Tri. Parker thought that was pretty neat.
Lisa- so glad you are getting back in the grove
I definately want to keep this group going. I plan on being very active next year!
Today I did 4 miles. The ducks are interfering with my training!!!!!!
They have come here for the winter, they arent usually at the track at DH work. I like it because it is 1/2 miles instead of 1/4 mile. Well there was so much poop everywhere, I couldnt even warm up properly. It was like playing twister with your feet while trying to walk. I did this for .4 mile & decided to go walk around the campus. (DH work is huge) I dont like having to do this because I have to pay attention to cars & occasionally cross train tracks. This breaks my concentration on my pace. I think these stupid ducks need to keep heading south. Dont they know it still gets below freezing a good bit here. Stupid ducks!

I have a training question - I have had a major knee issue, so have taken it easy for the last week and a half. I'm really happy to say I can walk without pain now!!! :teeth: I only have a problem when I turn on that foot, or step back wrong. So - I was supposed to do 18 on Saturday - but I'm thinking I should do 10 - 12 this week to see how things are going. Then for the following week (Dec. 10), do I
A. do the 18, followed by a 10, which pushes my 20 to Christmas Eve (leaving only two weeks until the marathon)
B. do 20 (I really want to get to that before race day), then have 3 medium runs of 10 - 12 before the marathon (eliminates a very long run, but allows for more gradual taper)
C. do 12 - 14, then 20, then 2 weeks of 10 (which puts me back on the original plan, but eliminates one of the very long runs)
D. Just go for the 18 this week as per my training plan, and hope I don't cause more injury
Please help!!! ;) Is it better to have 3 or 4 weeks of taper? I've read both. Any ideas???
Thanks everyone for all the help and encouragement! Everyone is doing soooo great!!! :cool1: I can't wait to meet you all in person!!! :wave2:

Hi all..........so nice to see everyone so excited about upcoming marathon. I have been MIA for a while but since I recieved my packet, it has once again ( for like the 8 time this year) inspired me to get back on track! I do wish now I had focused more through out this past year. I was just reading through this thread and I think its so nice how you all got to know one another. Truth is, I am such a prograstinator! I have always been. And although, I dont think I trained enough last year, I did have such a wonderful time. Which is probably why I havent really trained this year ( up until this point ) I have no excuses, I mean I can say LIFE gets in the way which is probably one of my favorite lines but, you all have lives as well and managed to get all your training through out the past months. you should all be so proud of yourselves for being so consistant in this journey! Anyway, I cant wait to meet you all and as much as I would love to catch up on the marathon threads, I can't now but was wondering about a few things, one of which, I posted a thread about.....
Will WISH be wearing a certain color? How will everyone meet on that day?
As far as WISH meets, the only one I am aware of is trails end..... any others?
Tigerlily, your stroll down memory lane was great! I had such a great time! Those pics help get me going for 06! see ya there.

The MFM trainign plan would say to do what you can this Saturday (if it is only 10 miles then so be it)...and then picking up where you would be in the schedule without disruption the following week. So on December 10--you do it as scheduled if you are able.
Not sure how many LR's you have missed--but if you have only missed 1 so far--getting in a good chunk of it this weekend would be adequate.
Our L-LR is on December 10th making I guess 4 weeks of taper (Dec 17, 24, 31, and then--marathon weekend!!!!!).
I've missed 4 weeks of Long runs (last weekend was actually a low mileage LR week)--and I'm just picking on up with the schedule--no making things up...just getting back up to speed as soon as feasible with "no makeups!".
Once you start trying to make up stuff and doing drastic rearranging to squeeze in stuff--you put yourself at risk for a setback.
I don't know which letter this would be--but I'd do what you can on Saturday (10-12)--stick with your LR on the 10th as you originally had planned.
MFM finsishes up as follows:
10th 8 miles
17th 20 miles
24th 10 miles
31st 6 miles
My coach has the team do their Longest on the 10th--and then cutting it by about 4 miles a week through the 31st.

I agree with Lisa. Do what you can this Saturday.
But then I would go with 18 next week (unless you do it this week) and back to your original schedule. Not real familiar with MFM so cannot help you there. We do the Ron Horton Minimal Effort training and it tapers us 2 weeks (15 on the 24th then 8 on the 31st then the marathon is the next week). We go to 24 on 12/17 then start the taper. If you do 20 on the 24th this only gives you 1 run to taper and I would not recommend that. Better to get to 18 and taper. I don't know how many LRs you have missed though, so it is hard to say. Do what you can then enjoy the marathon. It sounds like you have put in the training time. If you get to 18 you should be OK. Some training programs only get you to 18. Before you take my advice be warned! I am crazy and love the pain!
OK I am in total rest mode today! I have decided to do the 10 with DH tomorrow. It will be his last 10 of his 22 miler. Then do the marathon Saturday as a training run. He is doing 11 today and I was a total baby while he was getting ready to go. Wah, Wah  I need to rest but want to run. This will force me to take the marathon nice and slow. Ron is pacing Bree @ 11 MPM so I think that will work for me. Ron also always runs with the person who is having the hardest time so I will have company if I bonk! Have Christmas shows Friday and Saturday night so I am going to be tired! :faint: Call me crazy! I like the pain!

crzy4pooh - That is so hard. I know the possiblity of missing a L-LR scared the heck out of me. WIth MfM, though, I would not do back to back weeks with L-LRs. I just don't think it would flow wee. Plus, it would make a L-LR, hard week (as opposed to the usual xtra rest day during the week after teh L-LR), then another L-LR. Do what you can this week, but do not push yourself! Remeber, you knee is still healing.
Last thought, that knee will still be healing next week, although it should be better. ABck to back L-LRs just does not seem good. JMO. :wizard:

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think you would rather come into the race slightly undertrained that train too hard too quick and risk not being able to run at all. JMO, as well.
I did my 48 (5/1) yesterday on the indoor track. It felt like I was taking it nice and slow, but I don't think I was quite as slow as I thought I was. No distance or pace since I forgot my lap counter :guilty: I'm sure I was ahead of the sweeper van, though.
Trying my darndest to get excited about tomorrow's 18 miler. I have tomorrow afternoon off, so I think I'll run it then to take advantage of the (relatively) higher temps.
OK, I think that is all for now.

Hi there - quick weigh in on C4P's training dilemma. I agree with the general consensus of 10 miles this week, 18 miles the next, then 10 miles - but then I have an different opinion.
You sound like you have similar personality to me and have to know you've done that 20 miles to convince yourself you can do this thing. So personally, I would see how I felt after my 18 mile week. If I was okay, no pain etc etc, I would do the 20 miles on the 24th (but probably cut back to taper level on my weekday runs for that week) - a lot of my running buddies here don't taper until two weeks before and so long as you really do taper properly in the next two weeks you should be rested enough - it's not like you're doing it one week out.
If the 20 miler won't give you that psychological boost though then skip it, you'll do fine training to 18 miles - also skip it if the injury flares up after 18 as you might end up mucked up too soon before the race. As normal this post is ended with the phrase 'I am not an expert' but if I was in your situation, that's what I'd do. Helen

Hi guys! I've been MIA for a while now. I try to read the boards as much as possible to stay up-to-date on everyone's progress though. I've had a hard time with motivation recently...but have been struggling through.
I have a question....Would an increase in intensity of workouts cause a weight gain? I've been really good about my eating this week and it is not that certain time of the month. I've unexplainably gained ~2 pounds. The only change that I've made is that I've started more frequent and more intense workouts. Please advise. :confused3
Thanks!!

I've gained about 7 lbs during the course of marathon training, but that's because I have also upped my caloric intake more than necessary. In other words, I have been undisciplined about food because I have been running so much.
Per doctor's orders, I did 4 miles on the elliptical instead of my 16 mile LR. I have decided to skip this weeks LR, and see how my foot feels after a week or so of elliptical. I also did a yoga class yesterday. I figured working on my balance would work on all those secret foot and knee muscles that need help before the next LR. Anyway, the foot felt good during the workout, but is a bit sore today. Nothing a good workout tomorrow won't cure, right? :p

Thanks, Carrie!! That makes sense. It's just frustrating to be working so hard and seeing the scale go up. I have not measured but my pants do feel loose today. I was just thinking that I wished that I had remembered my belt this morning.
I've also thought that my body could be going into starvation mode. I'm burning more calories than usual...so my body is trying to hold on to something to make sure I'm not starving myself.

I sympathize with those of you who's eating has been off track. I've been completely out of control -- of course I'm a lot hungrier now than I used to be b/c of working out so much, but I've really gotten kind of bad (bad, bad, girl). I've gained about 5 pounds and know if I don't get it under control, life after the marathon is going to be very difficult. So I'm working on it.
Todally I totally bailed on my run. Didn't want to go in the first place, got out and started and my ankle felt tweaky, then my lower legs, etc. Finally decided after 2.5 miles to just forget it and walk home nice and easy. I've got 18 miles on Sat. and 9 on Sun. coming up and I don't need pain. I think this was just one of those days. Oh well, off to start supper now so I can eat some more. :rotfl:

Speaking of eating--I did find out what happens when you still eat like you are training and then teh training just goes in the toilet (like practically non-existent for a few weeks). IN my case--my butt and thighs found 7-10 pounds. AAAAAAACCCCCKKKKK!!! They need to hurry up and misplace them (preferably not elsewhere on my body).
Now I'm going to go carb-load and eat a cookie. :)

I can definitely vouch for the appetite growing larger than the running requires :confused3 I've been telling people marathon training is not conducive to weightloss! Luckily, I managed to find some willpower somewhere this past week or two. I'm scared to death of ballooning after the race if I'm not super careful. I'll probably return from Disney a good 7-10 pounds heavier! (Yes I am capable of doing that kind of damage in one week, and no, its not just water!!!!)
I went to the Y last night and did 9.2 miles on the TM (Ugh). Then back out 13 hours later to run before lunch today. I kept is short, 4.5 miles. Like Solo, I am not feeling a whole lot of enthusiasm for this weeks impending LR.

I did my 20 mile LR this morning. It took up the entire pre-school morning and the boy could see my car parked outside the whole time. I think he might have been obsessing about it a little! Yesterday we did the 10 miles with a 10:08 pace and today's pace was 10:57. I was really pleased with that. I am actually not planning on doing the 1/2 at that pace. I'll probably stick to around 11:00 or 11 and 1/2. Anyway, I'm feeling pretty proud.
I actually came home and drank a protien "stir" and took a cold bath (I don't want to talk about it) The really funny thing is, I was thinking at about mile 3 that I was going to post about my "stonker" run today when I got home. It was so cold and windy. I am not sure what happened, but it just seemed to get better. I was definitely pushing it by the end, but I wasn't miserable and it really didn't qualify as a stonker! I discovered a great new snack today Energy drink jellybellies (they have electrolites in them and they tasted GREAT) our adventure racing teammate and wal-mart employee got them at the associate's store, so I probably can't find them anywhere here, but i'm going to search on the internet for them!
I'm planning on doing some serious resting this weekend and I may miss a few runs to cross train next week. my right ankle (it has given me trouble b/4) is acting up and i think it needs some rest. It is not swollen, it just hurts and has crepitis (don't know how to spell it or if i used it right) but basically it kindof grinds or creeks and feel funny.
Hope everyone has great LR's this weekend. Colleen, I hope your rest has helped and that your 20 goes well tomorrow.

MelC and Crzy4Pooh- entry into the St Anthony's Triathlon is now closed BUT there are still slots for the Meek and Mighty Triathlon taking place the day before in St Pete. The distances(and actual order) are 1 mile run, 5.4 mile bike, and 200 yd pool swim. It would be a great, get your feet wet first triathlon. BTW- entry into St Anthony's opened at 9 this morning and I just checked and noticed it was closed. Took about 24 hours last year and less than 12 this year to fill. Wow.
Good luck on your 18 tomorrow Solo. I'll be doing it Sat.

Did my training tonight on the TM. 50 minutes -- 3.42 miles (14:37 pace). Very pleased with that. I am convinced the powerbars are a very positive aspect of my routine now. Have to do 8 Saturday. Kind of freaked out about it, though I know I can do it. I really want to average a 15:00 pace for that.
I know what you all mean about the appetite growing. I called Howard from the gym and had him start something for me for dinner. Literally felt like I couldn't wait those 10-15 minutes to eat. Feel much better now. Am drinking lots and lots of water, too.

Thanks so much for all the advice about the training schedule! Here is my plan - do at least 10 on Saturday, hopefully 12, then see how my knee feels. I only missed a 10 mile run last week - the week before I did 17 (supposed to be 16, but got lost...) So, I guess I can figure out my next LR after my knee tells me what it wants to do! ;)
Lynne - I have been looking into the Meek and Mighty Tri since you first mentioned it - I would love to have something before Danskin, and that sounds perfect! I talked to DH a little already, and will hint a few more times... ;) I think the main concern was that it would be the M 'n' M tri, then the Minnie, then the Danskin in three back-to-back weekends... :rolleyes1 That would be sooooo fun, though!!! :goodvibes
Lisa - YEA for your trip to Hawaii - it sounds awesome!!! :sunny:
I am still waiting on my packet... Does anyone else still not have one??? I did check on the site, and I'm registered, so I guess I'm still okay!
Great job on all those LR/LW!!! Lots of :wizard: for those running this weekend!!!

Lisa - Great news about your Hawaii trip. You'll have a great time!
I only got in a 30 minute walk today. My Mom had a medical condition flare up this morning and I had to help with that. She doesn't feel that great right now, but she'll be okay.
Tomorrow is an off-day for me (if you call several home repair projects "off").
I'll be gearing up for 18 on Sunday.
Just about 5 weeks to go! :) I'm starting to get anxious.

Good Morning, I can't believe that next month we will all be achieving our "goal". However I am again doubting myself. I don't know if I can do this. I am registered for the full. Running consistently until my DS2 had surgery, then 2 days later spiked 105.3 and up and down for 4 days 104.5 to 97.1 every 4-6 hours. Rough nights sleeping rough days caring for him had no energy or desire to run let alone leave him while he was feeling so crappy. Everything is fine now ( a little blood work showed high white blood cells and he was fighting a Viral infection, his viral warts did go away after he spiked the fever)
Back to me.. When I started training I found a great schedule to finish in the alloted time, however I am curious to know if any of you would share what you will be doing over the next 35 days to prepare for the FULL marathon. I know this week should be my longest run and then tapering should begin I just want to see what everyone else is doing.
Thank you for you continued support, encouragement, making me believe I can complete this!!
Thank YOu Chersheyb :earsgirl:

cherseyb--sorry about your son and glad that he is better. The key for you is to do what you can and if it feels too much while he is sick--it is okay to back down a bit. The more fatigued you are--the increased chance of injury. So not running and caring for him was the best thing you could do for both him and yourself :).
I can't speak for myself this season as I am doing the half....but the big build up for the next 35 days for my team (and last year at this time for myself)--was getting to that big 20 miler. Thing of the marathon as the dessert of the season. The sundae with whipped cream and a cherry on top (or your own favorite decadent dessert). The hard work--for all intents and purposes--is over once you get to your long-long run...in most cases I think that is 20 miles for most here. That is what is important in the next 2-3 weeks. The marathon after that--simply the reward and an experience to be enjoyed and not fretted over.
The next key point--AVOID injury! I think my coach told us once--that lots of injuries can happen towards the end...your very excited, it's almost here, you're a dynamo!!! My injury last season happened on my 20 miler. I did something different that day which didn't seem at all noticibly different and in retrospect had a HUGE impact on why I sustained injury. The injury was many years in the making (since I was pregnant with my oldest). What happened that day? I chose to run with someone on my team b/c I needed a buddy. So we chatted---and chatted and chatted and chatted. Why is this bad? B/c I was trying to keep up with his pace (we had the same net pace....but he's one of those ones that runs out of fuel a la the tortoise--and I'm the slow and steady hare), I was running a smidge faster than usual. And b/c I was chatting--it was too easy to become lax on my form and lose focus. That is what happened with me. I went all season--and then on that last long run...I stopped paying attention. My form "broke" (we have a photo of me at the end and I had poor posture--something that I didn't have all season long). I think that was when my sacrum tipped (diagonosed about 2 months later)--the area was inflamed and swelled over the next 3 days. I had to take about 10 days off of running. But you know what--in the end....it didn't impact me physically for the full. In fact--despite teh later need for physical therapy, I was blessed with my back being pain free for the full. Now I had other issues--but injury was not the cause.
So--between now and that long run--don't lose focus, don't change anything, and get those miles in! And if you do have a set back--just stop! (cease activity if necessary until pain subsides and then sub out cross training). Chances are the set back will heal enough for the race. Mine did.
Between your last long run and the marathon--the big thing is TAPER! You will soon feel like a nervous bundle of energy. Your body wants to work hard--it wants to log those miles....and you must baby it and not give in one little bit! Your body will beg and plead with you! Just say NO! All you are doing in those last 2-3 weeks is maintaining fitness/cardio. The work has been done, there is absolutely nothing--I mean NOTHING that will improve what you can accomplish on race day. But there is lots of things that could happen that will cancel your plans to go to the start line.
So for the next 35 days---divide it into 2 parts....get to that 20 miles!!! And then back off according to your training schedule. LR's cut down drastically. Perhaps throw in a day or two extra a week of cross training (instead of your run) to minimize chance for injury.
And on race day--enjoy the exciting conclusion of all your hard work. It will be the best day of your running career!

Drum roll please......
8 miles.....
97 minutes 40 seconds.....
translates to a 12.4998 mile....which I guess means 12:30 mile pace....and this is with 3:2 intervals per the MFM training schedule.
Let's hear it for the Big Puppy! Bow Wow yippee yow!
ETA: My last run--a 12 miler on the Saturday before surgery (Oct 22) was a 12:49 pace...I think it was 3:2 intervals that day as well. 5 weeks since a run in excess of 4 miles....not too darn shabby. :cloud9:

This is probably a dumb question at this point, but I haven't paid close attention to the course for the full until I got my program in the packet. I noticed that mile 24 goes right past BCV where we're staying. If I'm out there around 8 am, will I be able to see most of you that go by? Or would I need to be out earlier?
chersheyb...so sorry to hear about your little one. Glad he's feeling better.
Lisa...great pace! The big dog is back :dog:
Cam...you'll do great on the 8!
I'm off to do 6 miles, W3/R2 this am. Going to WDW this evening for the weekend to meet up with my cousins!
Good luck and good pacing to everyone on their LR this weekend!

Mel--you can catch them at two places--walk up to the bridge next to the swan/dolphin as that is where racers will enter the area. They head towards the Yacht and Beach Clubs (they don't actually pass the boardwalk area). You can also catch them on the otherside as they make their way to the back door of EPCOT.
At 8am--you may catch the winner as he is racing towards his finish.
The race concludes at 1pm--so you will catch various wishers between 8 and 1pm.

Karen - :grouphug: I am so sorry anout your mom.
mel - If you want to see me, you'd better sleep in a bit more. I'm thinking btwn 11:45 and 12:30.
MelR - Did I metion wearing a sweatshirt with the bottome rolled up. It helps a lot. COngrats on the 20-miler. You know, somewhere btwn miles 3 and 4 is when I finally get warmed up these days. Sounds like you may be similar. (How scary does that sound??)
Lisa - You are stagin a huge comeback!!! BTW - Ypou've done this before, automatic Big dog status.
c4pooh - If you did 17 a couple weeks about, I think missing the 18 is really not aproblem. Just do what you can.
Lynne - So good to see you around! SOrry about the bummer class!
cherseyb - My top week is not for another 2 weeks. We do 18 this week, 8 next then 20, 10, 8. If you need more info on during the week, let me know.
Cam - You can do the 8! Good lucjk on your pace!!
As far as eating, teh manager at Curves was talking to me about how the first couple weeks that you start and exercise plan, you eat like crazy. Then your body gets used to it and you taper out. Well, we have been building for a long time now, so I don't think our body ever "gets used to it." That may be why eating is such a challenge. I've been down a pound each of the last 2 days.
I've been really watching what I eat for the last few weeks (minus last weekend) and I think it's finally paying off!
Skipped my last 2 runs as it's been icy and my hip has been bothering me a little. Slippery, dark, and hip that gets easily re-injured if I step wrong are a bad combination. I really want it to be good for my 18-miler and at least for that, there will be light. 3-4 inches of snow on the ground right now, so I don't know where we'll be running, but at least I'll be able to see it.

Karen - Sorry to hear about your mom. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Chersheyb - I'm doing goofy and using the 3day/week running prog that was in runner's world a few months ago. It is a 16 week program and it has 2 20 mile runs. (i modified it a little to get the back to back runs for goofy) . I just did my first 20 this week. Next week is a step back to 15 and then the week after is a 20. After that, I taper. I'm not using the taper in the the program I've been doing. I'm going to use the hal higdon taper because mine seems like too many miles. Basically, the novice programs I've seen have 1 20 mile run that would happen in 2 more weeks from this weekend and then taper. Maybe you can check out the hal higdon program and see what is scheduled for the remainder of the training. I think mel has a link in the first post!
I'm stiff and a little sore today. I'm thinking the day after goofy is going to be a hard day to explore the parks on foot. maybe we can go to a bunch of shows or something. does anyone have any ideas for attractions that we can do sitting (i think I'm going to open that overwhelming book again and look at the info for WDW and visitors with limited mobility!)
Can't wait to hear about everyone's long runs this weekend

3-4 inches of snow on the ground right now, so I don't know where we'll be running, but at least I'll be able to see it.
This is my problem right now. I am all set to do my 12 miler and I wake up this morning to 6-7 inches of snow on the ground... and still snowing. Sigh. So, I guess my options are to give it a whirl outside and risk slip sliding away, wait a couple days and try it on what already could be a very busy Sunday (Saturday is out), run it here on the indoor track (162 laps)..ugh, or the dreaded TM (double ugh). I don't know what to do. :confused3
At least one positive thing about my possible upcoming work trip is that I would be able to run my 8 miler in Alabama, where I am assuming they don't have snow yet.
ANy advice on how to proceed today?

Karen-- you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
MelR-- You're no longer a WEENIE ;) Great b2b runs. I'm jealous you're done and I'm not!!!!!! I hadn't thought about which park to hit after, MGM is a good idea. Avoid Epcot because it is tons of walking to get around.
Solo-- I hear your pain! I was planning on doing my 20 miler tomorrow but Dx is working. Sunday is forecasted for snow, so I am taking time off today to do it at noon. This is scarey because I am not mentally prepared, this was a decision on a whim. I also don't know if I've eaten properly since I don't normally do LRs mid-day. Hope it goes well.
Cam-- I can't wait to hear about the 8! Go for it!
Lisa-- Woo Hoo you're back in action :cheer2: Great job!
Carrie & MelR-- I often think I can't make it around 3-4 miles and then feel invincible around 5-10 miles, then start the mind games thereafter. I think its important to be aware of so we don't panic if we feel lousy at 3 or 4 on race day.
Happy LRs everyone. Stay warm and don't slip :wizard: :sunny:

Still no packet for me!!
Karen - So sorry to hear about your loss.
Some injuries seem to be popping up here & there for people, be careful. I have a question about mine, & my training.
Yesterday was a sched. 50 min. run, but opted for the ArcTrainer (like an elliptical) @ the gym instead, to give my knees a break. They're still painful, but I've just been training through it. Last night (like most nights) there's a shooting pain in my knees that wakes me up out of my sleep. The pain runs from above my knee to half way down my shin. It disappear as fast as it appears, real weird. Nothing takes the edge off. I'm wondering if some muscle above or below is spasming & just pulling @ my knee joints. I ice, heat, blah blah blah. Anyone else have this kind of pain?
But I digress, my question is this: Do you think it'd be alright from here on in to take that Thurs. 50min. run & CT instead? I want my knees to be 100% for the LRs on each Sat. from here on in. This week it's 8, then 6, then 10, then 8, then taper. Should I be ok skipping that 1 run a week & CT instead? Or do I need to get the miles in? Don't forget, I'm only doing the 1/2. Any input would be appreciated.
Solo- Put the headphones on & go to the indoor track. Don't risk getting hurt out there, & forget the TM!!!
Good luck w/ the LRs this weekend everyone!! Be safe

I shouldn't have bothered trying, really....
I went for my run. It was very cold, but I had a hat and gloves, was wearing my tights and layers and I felt OK. I got about 2.5 miles in and then.... well, I slipped. More accurately, I misstepped in the snow into what I think was a rather deep hole. I lost my balance and fell down, rolling over once before *SPLASH* ending up in a water-filled roadside ditch. :guilty: :cold: My only thought whilest falling was "Protect the Garmin!!," which I managed to do. I'm seriously fine, no tweaks or twists or sore spots.
Since then I have squished back to the office, taken the longest, hottest shower ever and threw my shoes and gloves in the dryer. I vow to try again on Sunday-- be it outside or on the indoor track. Sigh.
I will finish this race and get that dang medal if it's the last thing I do! :hyper:
Carrie- yes, Football tomorrow. As for that secret hope, well, it's always nice to do well. It makes for a very busy November and December and basically you can't plan anything because of "what if." So in other words, it's more fun when you do well, but it's busier as well. Definately a double-edged sword. (I think my biggest secret is that although I complain a LOT about the hours I put in, I really enjoy my job 95% of the time...)

I was so thrilled and I feel good afterwards too.

Solo-- Phew, I'm glad you only ended up "squishy" a twisted ankle would be terrible at this point!
Tiffj-- Awsome on the 8 miler :cheer2:
Jodi-- I think trading CT for mid-week miles is very prudent. As long as you are getting your cardio in and your LRs are on schedule you'll probably be much better off than flirting with injury.
OK I did it! I think I peaked :teeth:
I did my first 21 miler today. As Craig said, it was cold and VERY windy. I set out very cautious, thinking the whole thing was iffy. But my pace was really good. I started right from mile one doing a .08 mile walk in the middle of each split (from .48 to .54). I think that made a huge difference. Anyway, my avg pace was 9:57    Its funny how the mind works during an LR. Around mile 3 I was justifying turning this into a 16 miler (or less). Somewhere between mile 5 and 16 I was one with the universe. All was well with the world and I remembered why I do this. Starting around mile 16 I was quite aggrevated and wondered "why in the world do I do this? what's so important about this stupid marathon anyway????". By mile 18 all thoughts ceased. There was only one thought: get to the next walk interval. The pain by mile 19 was excrutiating. I can't describe it in words because I don't actually recognize it. Its not joint pain, or injury pain. Its not even muscle pain. Its just "I WANT THIS TO STOP NOW!!!! pain". When I finally broke out of the run at 21 I couldn't help but let out audible moans and groans. All the pain was in my hips and butt (glutes), my quads, hamstrings, calves, ankles, feet were all perfectly happy.
Then came the soak. Like MelR I really don't want to remember it. I cranked the heat up to 72 which brought moans from the whole family (I know you southerners probably can't understand how 72 could be uncomfortable, but by this point in the season its way too hot for normal people). I was still freezing. I cranked a space heater in my room, bringing the room up to about 85 and still was too cold. I'm now wearing flannel pjs, a sweater and a full length heavy robe and barely able to tolerate the cold.
Oh I love this sport
What in the world will I do with myself tomorrow morning???????

It has been an incredibly busy week for me. (Boss has been away for 2-week vaca, so I am the boss’s stand-in) Glad she is back Monday.
I am fearful of the LR this weekend, my 18-miler! So much snow it doesn’t look good that it will be outdoors but on the dreaded TM. Sigh. Yes, I might need to use that novel! (Large print!)

Lisa - Great job on your LR! Sorry to hear about the knee, though!
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I'm doing 10 - 12 early tomorrow. Dh is doing 15 (I think). Night all! :wave2:

Sunny -- You blow me away! Congratulations, sweetie!
Good luck to everyone on LWs/LRs this weekend. It is so bitterly cold here that I am terrified of going out in the morning for 8. I CANNOT afford to get sick. I just don't own the right kinds of clothes. I will definitely layer it!
BTW- saw "RENT" tonight. May need to download some of that very inspirational music to my ipod for pre-walk and warm-up.

Cam - OK this has nothing to do with training, but I really want to see RENT. Was it good? I have never seen the musical but just the movie preview made me cry. I downloaded "seasons of love" long ago. Is it really sad or hopeful? I am a crier so I haven't decided if it is something I can handle or not. I started crying during the 2nd song in Les Mis and cried for the rest of the time. I may have taken a break at intermission. I still cry whenever l listen to the music or see it on PBS great performances!!!! I have still never seen the Passion. (i knew i couldn't handle it, even though the major message is hope!) They are always showing clips in church and I leave a blubbering mess!!!!! When I was pregnant, they showed some clip from saving pvt. ryan to make some point (i don't remember what it was) anyway, I lost it!!!! I'm still mad about that and the boy is not 3 and 1/2 yo. Someone was actually just telling me the premise behind life is beautiful this week and i started crying!!!! So, all that being said, should I see RENT?
Sunny - GREAT JOB!!!!! You have really picked up speed over the past few months!! I don't think I've sped up at all, just picked up miles! I end up really hurting when I try to push the pace, but I find that I am out of control with the garmin. I ran the 10 on wed with EC, who of course started faster than I needed to go. I am planning on really taking the 1/2 easy. She had us running 10 min miles, which is no big deal to her. Anyway, I wanted to slow down, but after a few miles where I saw our pace hanging around 10, I couldn't make myself slow down b/c I got greedy!!! I am going to have to set the pace alert button for the races, or I'll not be able to control myself and I'll start out too fast and CRASH!!!

MelR-- I haven't seen The Passion for the same reason. I really want to see it but I can't bring myself to endure such intense emotion. I don't know anything about Rent. I have the same "greediness" with Garmin. If it wasn't for the Garmin I know I wouldn't have maintained my pace throughout that long run!
I have no residual soreness, but my right hip is "sticking", it makes a "click" when I move it. Very strange. I never have any problem on the right side of my body. The body part I don't talk about is doing just fine :goodvibes

Sunny - you know we have been doing too much rough stuff to our bod's when we make statements like "i never have problems with that side!" :rotfl2: My right side is my trouble maker side! I have been running in several different shoes. All either cushioning or stabilizing and I have come to the conclusion that i need to wear cush/neutral on my right and stab on my left!! I'm going with the chushion because it feels better anyway. I'm glad the part you don't talk about is doing well. I noticed that I recovered exceptionally well from my recent run. I added both the protien "stir" and the cold bath. If I could just add massage, I'd probably feel even better!!!!

Karen-I'm so sorry for your loss.
Sunny- Wow! I'm hoping I can do my 22 miler tomorrow and have some good results like you.
Today I'm suffering from PTSD-Post-Traumatic SOAK disorder. I did 10 miles and tried my first ice bath. I think the only reason it made my legs feel better is that I thougth I was going to have a heart attack when that water first hit my legs! :cold: How long am I supposed to soak? I did 13 min and my hot tea ran out so I quit, too.
Good runs/walks to everyone. It's not long now!
Solo - Ok, did you "hear" my post in your head when you wiped out "run inside, run inside"....Seriously though, I'm glad you didn't get hurt. I've fallen on the road b/c of black ice b4 & it rots.
Sunny - Thanks for your advice, I think you're right. I'll CT like a fiend on the THurs. & get my HR up & leave well enough alone. Congrats on your seriously LR, I was rolling @ the thoughts you were having during it. Everything from "check me out, I rock" to "why am I doing this?" I've been there & I'm only training for the 1/2.
Well, my LR today felt great! 8 miles w/ an average of 9:57, & -splits. My 8th miles was 9:28 & I felt like I could've kept going (but that's probably 'cause I knew it was time to stop :rotfl: ). Knees hurt like usual. Last night I took 3 advil b-4 bed & wasn't woken up by knee pain. I haven't been using pain killers at all for the knee pain, but I have to sleep, otherwise I'm a monster in the a.m. (& for the rest of the day for that matter).
MelR - RENT didn't make me cry, but if you're ever in NYC, go see "The Phantom of the Opera." I've seen it twice & cry like a baby @ the end. I think I cried when I read the book, too. Can you say LOSER?
Cam - How'd it go today??? I know, it was real cold this a.m., & windy. Maybe 25 w/ the windchill?? And talk about not being able to get warmed up afterwards... what IS that?
Lisa - How's the knee today?

Hi all!
I've enjoyed reading the posts today. I've gotten some chuckles reading about peoples' ice baths. You should hear me when I first get into that water :earseek:
I've seen Rent on Broadway and really enjoyed it. May go see the movie this weekend. Parts of it were sad, but nothing that made me cry (and I can cry easily at some movie scenes).
Had to work today, so I will x-train tonight and have a 17 miler on tap for tomorrow. We'll see how the layering works, since it's cold here.
Craig - I'm starting to create may 1/2 and Full marathon playlists for my iPod. It makes the time go by much easier.
Have fun this weekend everyone!

I would love to see Rent. I'm concerned about the drug content and other stuff as I am sensitive to that for some reason (like "they're killing my puppy" sensitive). I will probably have to wait for it to come out on Netflix since it probably isn't a show/movie that my hubby wants to see. But I want the soundtrack. I've heard a few of the songs and they are wonderful...esp. SEasons of Love (is that what it's called?)
My knee is doing fine. I misplaced my compression wrap (overwhelmed with my home--long story--but to keep it short...I think something ate it. A box, a shoe...I don't know---but something ate it, I am positive ;)). I got a new one--have resumed taking my anti-inflammatory and it is fine today. The puff is back to what it was (I hate calling it a puff--but that is what it is. Just where fluid likes to deposit when things are acting up). I did buy another support..I'm not sure if it really does compression--but it does breathe, so I might try that for running. I think my mistake is that after icing, I didn't put my compression wrap on afterwards and I was told to continue wearing it. It was day 2 of me seeing if I can do without, but I have discovered that I cannot do without it.

Melissa -- I am a blubbering mess at sad movies and RENT definitely made me cry at times (and all the teenage girls around me were sobbing all over each other!), but the message is beautiful and the music is awesome! We took Andy and worried about his exposure to some of the themes (he's 12), but he was very mature and LOVED it and desperately wants the soundtrack.
After some careful consideration and a look at the weather channel (it was 27 without the windchill), I decided to do my 8 mile walk on the treadmill. Did 8.03 in 1:59:14 (14:51 pace). The good thing about the TM is that it is relentless and unforgiving and you can't slow down when there is a lapse in your attention span or when you are tired -- you actually have to consider whether to kick the speed down a notch, and I can usually talk myself out of doing that. The bad thing about the TM is that it is relentless and unforgiving and you can't slow down when there is a lapse in your attention span or when you are tired -- you actually have to consider whether to kick the speed down a notch, and I usually talk myself out of doing that. ;) Yeah, as you can see, I am still a bit undecided as to whether that is a good thing or bad thing! :confused3 After all, the plan called for 8 miles (the faster you do it, the sooner you are done. Now, if it had called for 2 hours, my attitude might have been a little more relaxed! :rotfl2:
I did a powerbar a bit later than I wanted (1/2 while walking into the gym and then 1/4 at about 1/2 hour and another 1/4 at 1 hour) Also did "shots" of honey at 1:20 and 1:40. The powerbar definitely helped. Probably needed a second one since I hadn't done breakfast, but when all was said and done, I think I learned some stuff that works. I was voracious when I was finished and didn't wait to eat. Stopped at the first place I saw and got a bagel with ham and egg and cheese. Very satisfying. Still doing okay almost 4 hours later (at work) as far as hunger.
Developed "hot spots" on the inside of my foot back near the heel on both feet. I was wearing my new sneakers (same style, etc) but I think the socks were a bad choice and I won't use them again for a long session. I am having some soreness in my right hip, but I think it is the result of my gait. Not much to be done about it. Will take some aleve and see how it is in a couple of hours. Should have done that a while ago, but had an impromptu partners meeting (quasi! ;) )
Sunny -- thought about you this morning when I listened to my awesome scooter & O-Zone mix. I can definitely see how that kind of music can get you going faster than you would otherwise! :cool1: I bumped up the TM speed .1 - .2 for short bursts during those songs and when I found myself tiring, I rewound to start that segment of my mix again to re-energize myself. Thanks again for the great suggestions. I still always check itunes for dance and electronic and have found some other fun stuff including a club re-mix of "total eclipse of the heart" (one of my favorite songs)
I hope everyone else had a similarly satisfying session this morning!

The most positive part of today's 18 mile LR is that it's over. Unfortunately, I'm already dreading the 20 in less than 2 weeks. I had planned on moving the 20 to Thurs that week because Fri and Sat are full but may actually do it Sunday at the World depending on the forecast. I don't think my body appreciates below freezing temps before you add in the wind chill associated with 20-30 mph winds. At least it wasn't snowing- actually was sunny with dry roads.
Sunny, Cam, and Jodi- great job on your LRs!!
Solo- I'm glad you weren't hurt. Good luck getting your LR in tomorrow.
Karen-:grouphug: sorry for your loss.
I don't have any cold soak stories as my apartment just has a shower stall. A couple weeks ago, I thought about maybe trying wading in the Pond but I don't think thats such a good solution either. In the summer, the water temps around here only get into the 60s and they are certainly not anywhere in that ballpark now.

Does anyone know where I can get dual-layer shorts? They are bike shorts with regular shorts attached, but no seam between the legs and the bike shorts are attached to the regular shorts so that the shorts don't ride up. I saw a pair at junonia.com, but they are $59.95 and $8.95 shipping. I think it is is the outrageous shipping charge on a pair of shorts that totally turns me off that prospect. Any other ideas of where I can find them?

After today I have a whole new respect for you guys doing the Goofy!! You are truly big :dog2: I had to do my LR yesterday because of weather & this a.m. I had a 5k with DS. My legs & feet were none too happy about this. They kept repeating all thru the race- "we gave you 8 miles yesterday, we are supposed to get to rest today!!!" Boy was I hurting. I held DS back, he could've gone much faster but since they didnt completely close the roads I didnt want him out of my sight. (he's 7) He was so excited & loved the whole thing. And this was a piddly little race with nothing going on. He is going to love WDW 5k.
It also gave me my first Last Place Finish :cheer2: There werent walkers in this group, all runners. I dont care, I made sure DS wasnt last. He ran ahead once we could see the finish line.
What do you guys do about blisters or hot spots. I am still having trouble on the side of my heals from where I had the pedicure. The skin is starting to calous (sp?) up. And its getting sensitive. Any suggestions? Will moleskin stay put?
Cam- those shorts sound cool. I would like some too. That is high for someting they can fit in a legal size envelope. Great job with the LR
Jodi- awesome time!
I'm having the same trouble with getting warm the rest of the day. And I'm in the south & a hot natured person. What's up with that? My heat usually never goes above 63 & I have it on 67. For me that is huge & would normally be sweating right now.
Sunny- great job, you are really a big :dog2: I am so impressed by what you've accomplished!
Cam - Kudos on the TM walk, ugh, I did that a couple weeks ago & can barely handle it. That's a long time to be a hamster :rotfl:
Tiff - I was going to "run" the 5k @ WDW after the 1/2, but now you're making me think twice. Maybe I'll do a trial run like you did today. I have a feeling though, that my body will boycott. That's so cool your DS had fun! After my run this a.m. I walked w/ my DS 10 2 miles. He's a mega couch potato in "training" for the 5k in Jan.!
Somone's gotta know why we can't get warm after a LR. Is it just fatigue? Prolly that,+the body having no reserve to give warmth. It's annoying.
Xterratri - If you decide to wade in the pond, please take pictures :goodvibes
Tek224 - Good luck on the 17 tomorrow, better you than me.

Jodi -- I have a HUGE confession to make. I was reading a (trashy) novel. It was the only thing I could find with "large print"! ;) Time sure went more quickly than I would have expected. Hmmmmm. . . I may have just figured out why I was drenched in sweat by the time I was done -- my pony tail was dripping! :earseek: It was ugly! :rotfl2: Thank God I finally got a key to the executive washroom in my building (shower facilities!). :earseek: Can't believe I forgot to share that advice. And so sorry about your feet Tiff
Emergency Bulletin--No one else gets pedicures until AFTER the race. You earned all those rough spots--and getting your feet beautified mid to late season is contraindicated for this very reason.
Tiff, I think you will have to try something like that, or any blister product at the stores. However--if you can try to run this week and just let the spot get roughed up (it will hurt-but will hopefully help the skin for Disney)--you would be better off.
All these blisters and callouses we get are our training beauty marks. They are badges of honor. You earned those suckers. Keep the pumice away from the tootsies and schedule a pedicure as your reward post marathon. Mine is scheduled for Wednesday at my gym--it has a dayspare..and best of all...free daycare when you use the spa.

Somone's gotta know why we can't get warm after a LR. Is it just fatigue? Prolly that,+the body having no reserve to give warmth. It's annoying.
I used to know this answer...I will ask my coaches for the more clinical answer. But for now--in laymen's terms....I believe it is b/c we have just shocked our bodies. Our bodies are trying sooo hard to keep cool for the 2 hours that we are overloading them during an LR. I had read somewhere very recently that the muscle temp while running is roughly 103-105 degrees (forget the number exactly--it was VERY high). That is a very high grade fever (not a true fever though--but if the rest of your body got that hot it certainly would be). So while your muscles are this hot, your body is working overtime to keep your body's temp from spiking to this.
So my educated guess--is that when you stop running...your body is still trying to cool down (why some may actually shiver from cold even if it is in the 50s or 60s when you finish and actually a pleasant tempeture after a shorter run). Your body has been traumatized from the efforts you just put it through--and I think the rest of the day it is working hard to recover from all of that. So while you may feel cooled down, your body may still be in fever prevention mode...if that makes any sense.
Anyone more familiar with physiology, please chime in. But when I read that muscle temp thing, my first thought was :earseek: .

Lynne thought you southerners would appreciate this.

Supposed to get more of the lovely white stuff over night but still plan on walking outside. We also have to shovel the deck 2 or 3 times per winter as it is 8 ft in the air. We have a walk out basement to the back yard.

Thanks to everyone for their advice while I was in the dumps this past week. I am slowly pulling out, a guess enough to pull off my 18 mile run today (which I hated every step). I took three full days off last week and I feel that I need to take a few more because I really hurt. Sunny, I now know how you felt during your spell a few weeks ago. It took me forever to stop shivering this afternoon, probably 2 hours and I was in bed under two quilts.
MelR, 10 miles followed by a 20 mile run! You go girl. :worship:
NYcpa, all I can say is  :cold: Not good to look at that picture after my torture today. Yes, I am a whimpy Canadian, been in the south too long. My hats off to all of you running long runs in snow. It was 40 this morning in NC for my long run, actually perfect temperature and no snow(if only my body wanted to cooperate).

I am back in the game! I walked/ran 5 miles today. I reinjured my hip, but I have decided that I am going to do the 1/2 regardless of the hip pain. So I am not going to rest it anymore. Jodi- mom(NYcpa) suggested that I clarify what I was referring to when I mentioned the Pond- I live about 150 ft off the Atlantic Ocean at high tide. When we got a really nasty Noreaster last January with 70-80 mph winds and supposedly 42 inches of snow(it drifted so bad it was tough to tell but the cars were covered up to their roofs) I had snow INSIDE my deck door. I took pictures and emailed them to my landlord who snowbirds in Sarasota.
When I'm next home, I'll have mom help me set up a site with some pictures of here so people can see my 'tough' living circumstances. Much of the coastal land here abouts is Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge so it's expensive houses interspersed with open land. The school itself has Atlantic Ocean frontage and operates a Marine Animal Rescue Center. To get an idea, check out www.une.edu.
Back to studying- get to read about leukemias and lymphomas as I finished the chapter on anemias and bleeding disorders. I'm already looking forward to Reproductive system in the Spring as at least we'll cover some happy stuff(and then go through everything that can go wrong)

The penguin (John Bingham) wrote a great article this month in Runners World--the injured may wish to check it out.
While you don't necessarily have to be out for the count when injured--he says there is no harm in backing off and taking the race easy...so if you were doing good on time--it is okay to slow it down since we have 16 minutes a mile to complete it.
I'll find it and post some good quotes when I have the chance. It was really good. Perhaps if I read it before my knee surgery--I wouldn't have been crying my eyes out at the poor physical therapist when he suggested doing no more than the half.

Please do not accept any offers to purchase your bib if you receive them. You earned that bib and even if it earns you a ride on the sweeper bus--it is yours, do not sell or give it away.
As a security/safety concern--they will have your bib, they cannot sign their own medical release as you are the one to sign it--you can become liable for them should anything happen to them (I have helped at a 5K where a man dropped dead of a heart attack and he was very fine before hand according to his family) and you are responsible for your chip if it gets lost/stolen/not returned.
Not to mention--that it can be assumed that it is very much against Disney's policy to do this.

Christa - Way to go!!! That is a great time!!!!!!!
Lisa - would some compression tights work for you? CWX makes tights that actually provide compression to the areas around the knee and to the calf. I have a pair that i wear frequently and have pretty much demolished in the adv. races. I'm getting a new pair for christmas to wear for goofy. They may not provide enough compression for your knee, but it would be cool if they did.
Colleen - I've been wondering how your lr went. i'm glad you made it through even though it was torture. I am planning a bigger taper than my plan suggests just to get a mental and physical break and see if i can actually get revved up again. There was an article written by hal higdon which can be found on his homepage that i found very encouraging related to the lr's. He basically argued that although people ask how he can run a grueling 26.2 miles that all of the miles are not in fact grueling. He points out that some are fun, most are comfortable and a few a grueling. I've been thinking about that alot for my lr's . I have decided to remember that all the miles are not so bad, just a few!
Cam - thanks for the update on rent. I'm probably going to cry based on your report. I really like jessie martin though, so i may just have to take the risk!
I spent all day cross training by shopping with my mom. This should get me ready for the long mental torture of the marathon! it was sooooooo crowded and unhappy in the stores today. Anyway, I just not got a chance to read everyone's posts. All i could think about as i read was that i cannot wait to meet you all!

Hey Cam
I don't know any other great sources for those same type dual-layer shorts - they seem to be kind of an exclusive thing for them although I am sure someone else makes something similar. I have two ideas for your though.
1) Ebay - found several pairs in the Ebay stores listing for prices ranging from $17.50 - $24.99. The ones currently listed all seem to come from one seller whose shipping rates aren't great but are better than junonia.com. The shipping rates are $5.xx for parcel post and around $6 for priority. With the lower price on the item, it might make up for the still-high shipping. I don't know what color/size you need but I would guess it is worth a try to see what they have.
2) I found a coupon code for $10 off first purchase of $50 or more. So if you haven''t purchased from them before (or could sign up Howard or someone else :) ) then this link would save you the cost of shipping and a bit more. I looked for other coupon codes without restrictions (i.e. not just for new customers) but didn't find any. You may, however, find it worthwhile to google for junonio coupon codes as there were plenty of results found and you may find something I missed.
http://www.gotapex.com/coupon-codes/338.phtml
Those shorts look pretty cool - if you end up buying them I'd love to hear how you like them.
Have a great evening everyone - big congrats to all those who got in their LRs today! I'll be doing my 8 mile LR tomorrow - hope it goes well! I put lots of new holiday music on my ipod so that should be a fun change!

Congratulations, Christa! What an amazingly awesome time! Good job to the kids, too!
Rhonda -- You are such a sweetie! Thank you for researching that for me. Brilliant minds think alike ;) I actually made a "best offer" on a pair of those shorts (in a funky color that will be okay for training but would clash big-time with my WISH shirt! :teeth: ) from that ebay seller. Got them for $15 plus shipping. And am hoping to be training in them by late week and will then make a decision whether to bite the bullet and buy them from the website for the 1/2 in black. I'll let you know how they work. I am definitely going to pursue your find on the coupon, though. I am sure I can find a friend to place the order for me. Thanks again and good luck on your 8 miles. I have to say, a lot of christmas music makes me teary, so I'd have to be selective of what to put in my workout mix! :goodvibes
Lisa -- I can't believe anyone would sell their bib! :confused3: At least no one here. We have all worked so hard! I am seriously considering having mine framed with my finisher picture and a copy of my pre- and post-heart surgery EKGs. ;)
"No other road. No other way. No day but today." A mantra that will be in my head training for the 1/2, courtesy of the awesome, awesome RENT soundtrack.
Melissa -- I can't wait to hear what you think of RENT. My next highly anticipated movie is Narnia!

Christa :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: I signed on specifically to see if you had posted your results :grouphug: Great job! Sounds like you are TOTALLY ready to take on Goofy!
Lisa-- Pedicure?!?! You've got to be kidding me! I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy :rotfl2: I cringe even goint to the dr and having to have my feet seen!
Cam-- New song to add to the list (I've actually recommend this one before, but not this specific version) Mad World (Money-G Remix) by Jan Wayne. I've soared to new heights with this one!!!!!!
I made an apt for a fitness evaluation at the Y so I can sign up for the FitLynx (the machines have an electronic key pad that you enter your ID and it keeps track of your progress for you). Can't Wait!

As much as I would love to say I don't understand who would sell their bib - I think I have a clue. Someone who in good faith registered, trained, and is now in the position of being out of the race through no fault of their own - and out all that registration fee!
I thought having a deferment for health reasons meant you could run next year, registration prepaid by the deferment - wrong. It means you are guaranteed the right to enter - just like everyone else who goes on the website early enough! You lose all the money you paid this year if you can not compete this year.
a recent routine physical has found i may have coronary artery disease - further testing needed. But a stress test done as a routine because of my age (56) was okay except my blood pressure jumped from 110/70 to 190/110. And my cholesterol jumped from 150s last year to 230.
This may help explain my excessive exhaustion after my long runs lately.
Bottomline - I'm one sometimes participant on this thread who understands why someone would try to recoup some of the cost of the bibs that may well be worthless to me now. On the brighter side, if I can slow down and keep my HR under control I might be able to do the half, anyway. After my cardiac CT later this month I'll know if that is a possible goal.
On the brighter side - doc says my racewalking probably has prevented further damage and recommends keeping RWing in my lifestyle - just no longer than an hour for now (not to the point of exhaustion) and keep my heartrate under 65% (thank God for my monitor!). And a routine physical has pointed out need for further workup and maybe saved my life (women who have heart attacks are less likely to survive than men so no warning could have been a disaster.

Allison, Maureen, Zach, and myself before the West Kennebunk Fire Triathlon in August.
Allison also did the half in Portland w/ me, Maureen did the Colby Tri too plus she's my next door neighbor so often is involved in 'study break' activites, and Zach also did Pedro's Mtn Fest and went to DC for the conference and to do medical at the Marine Corps Marathon. I've probably been the worst offender for other activities this year so far but am definitely not the only one. Hey, you wouldn't want a doctor that all they did was study would you? That would be one boring person and would probably act like dumb dumb that Sunny saw.

Thanks, Sunny! I'll look for it. I love Jan Wayne's version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" You really have to consider adding "RENT" from the movie soundtrack to your mix. It is great high-energy!

Wish our Y had this! I often find myself coming back to these threads or my journal to track my progress. My Garmin helps for the outside stuff. Have fun!
BTW -- on the pedicure issue -- DD17 has done indoor colorguard the past three winters and worked up some impressive callouses for her "floor work" and was adamant that those callouses actually protected her feet from injury on the floor.

xterratri - Love the pics!
kathcoll - So sorry for your news. Hope everything turns out good and you can still do the half.
Thanks for all the congrats! I am sore today and had to stay home from church with DD5. She had a temp of 100. :earseek: Runner yesterday...very sore mommy today. :earboy2:
Anyway, how do I get pictures on here. Ron sent me some on email and I have tried to figure it out, but could not. Want you to see me and Bree in the marathon.

This could work. My compression stocking was kind of like tights for just my knee. Where would I find these at? (Are these those tights that people wear for vericose veins or something different?)

Just an FYI on the bib-sale/purchase....this was an unsolicited offer I received and was meant as a warning to my fellow WISHers to not be tempted by a stranger. What you do with your bib and perhaps someone you know is between you and them. But I was just giving a heads up that I was unsolicited. And even more disturbing, I think the poster followed me from another forum b/c i spoke openly about my knee over there. I would assume I am the only one they contact and find it highly suspcious. It just tinks my bell that this person doesn't know me nor my determination and was trying get me on a weak spot. And further more--they are trianing for goofy and only registered for one event. So they can't even do goofy even if they bought the bib.
I hope that makes clear sense.
I can understand wanting to recoup your costs...but since it would not be a Disney-recognized transaction...you assume personal liability for the person who takes your place. So unless you know them--I stand by my statement..do not take an unsolicited offer from a complete stranger. You don't want to end up with a lawsuit.
I mean if they can find a homeowner liable for a burgler slipping on a puddle in the kitchen after they broke into a home--they can find a person who was only trying to get their money back liable for a runner should they become sick or injured during an event.
Sunny--I agree on the pedicure...just felt bad that someone got one and now they are having hot spots and was just warning all in case they didn't know to not get one at all. :)

Lidsa, I definitely understand (and appreciate) the liability heads-up. And I have no intention of selling my Goofy bibs - even if I can't do the whole thing I'm hoping to at least get the medical clearance for the half. I figure I'll at least get 2 decent training shirts from my investment. And I still have 2 weeks at my time share to enjoy in January!
I just wish the deferment meant what I have always thought it meant - if medically unable to compete, enrollment deferred til next year. As it turns out, I have misunderstood that term all along - it seems most major national events treat deferment the same. Its MY misunderstanding of the term not a problem with Disney policy.
And I'm just starting to come to terms with not only the sudden end to my Goofy challenge plans, but to the realization that despite losing 80 pounds in 3 years and going from a couch potato to a 2 time marathoner in the past year, I am potentially still at risk from previously unsuspected coronary disease. A scary thing to have found out just yesterday.
