Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive list of what typical items are no longer being allowed in carry-on luggage? I've read threads where pens and pencils have been confiscated. I've also heard mention that walk-mans, gameboys and laptops cannot be brought on board.

In October, DH and I will be travelling with our two DD's (not quite 4 and 2) on a four hour flight to Las Vegas and a much shorter filght in November to WDW and I want to make sure that whatever diversions I pack are able to come on board.

Also, can we still gate-check strollers?

Thanks
Mary:)

I would truly recommend to call the airline itself...too many rumors are going around about this, and I'm sure many are false. Personally, this is what I've heard through the grapevine: on carry on luggage, no nail clippers, metal nail files, scissors, or knives (of any material).

Please dont take away the pens and pencils especially if they are taking away the GameBoys. Nothing will be left to occupy the children. Wouldnt be able to do homework on the airplane.

I called Southwest today since my son and I are leaving bright and early tomorrow morning. They verified that NO gameboys or cell phones are allowed on the plane. I would assume that means no laptops or CD players as well. I am disappointed since I bought a gameboy and game specifically for the trip (had it put aside in my closet). Waste of money now, though I do understand fully what they are doing.....

Also, absolutely no razors or nail clippers in carry-on. I was planning on not checking my bag since I'm only going for a few days and just have a duffel, but I will have to check it since I have a lot of "no-no's".

Oh no. My husband probably won't ever get on a plane again if he can't take his laptop! He doesn't go ANYWHERE without it and you certainly can't put something like that in checked baggage. Can anyone confirm that they aren't allowing laptops?

Check with your airline on the laptop. My husband finally returned from Europe Sunday and he and all his coworkers had laptops that were allowed on board. They may have made an exception because they were stranded there.

For those of you who like to carry food on board for your children-no knives of any kind (including plastic) are allowed. You will also not find any knives in the restaurants at the airport once you pass the security checkpoints.

Have a safe trip :)

OK. Some of my coworkers flew SW today. They took their laptops and cell phones and got them on without any problem. (They also took pens and pencils!) You cannot use cell phones, but that has always been the rule. I forgot to ask if you could turn on the laptop. Basically, we had decided that unless SW wanted to up thier baggage liablitity they would just have to come up with a way to let laptops on.

Knives of any type are not allowed. Nail clippers and scissors are also being prohibited. The confiscations that may or may not be happening are as a result of airport security which is probably higher at NY, DC, and other major airports than it is in Nashville.

I spent several hours at the Nashville airport trying to get out of town last Thursday and where I sat I could watch security. They did open more carry ons and go thru them, but people were bringing carryons to the gate.

As for knives in Nashville you will not find them period. 0ur resturant before security is no longer giving them to you.

No cell phones? Are they kidding? After all the good the cell phones did on the doomed planes?

No PLASTIC knives? Wow...

I'm a little surprised by the no cell phones ruling too. I guess that means no travel alarms? Or noise machines? I always take one to muffle noise, just in case but I guess that's out now. :(

They should also be looking for and culling out the forbidden items described in your ticket brochure, and also matches, cigarette lighters, aerosol cans with certain flammable contents, etc. (These items were named in a list that used to come with United tickets but if they are not now forbidden they ought to be.)

If the airlines go to a policy of shrink wrapping carry on baggage, then removing some dangerous items is not neecessary.

Considering it was the cell phone usage that saved that fourth plane from hitting the white house :-( I really hope they allow them on the plane....

I called Delta and asked about carry-ons. Wasnt sure if I needed to come up with other items to put in our carry-ons to occupy my 9yr son for 5.5 hrs. The lady said no changes have been made in what can be carried on. They might ask to have you show them the Game Boys actually work. She said they cant keep people from having pens/pencils because we all carry them in our bags.

We flew Sunday night on American and carried on 3 gameboys and a laptop. We just had to turn on
the gameboys and play a little of the game for the security people. We also had a cell
phone.

My cousin flew back from San Diego with his laptop (assuming his cell phone) and two pens. He said they put his laptop through xray 2x. Before this tragedy, I had to prove my beeper worked. I would think they would still be checking to see that all electronics actually work.

I have spoken with three people in our department who flew yesterday. They flew SW and AA.

They took laptops, cell phones and basic other stuff with NO problem. They had to turn these things on at security and make them do something, but that was it!

None of them actually even remember much about if you could turn the laptop on. None of them did, but most of us have found it more of a nusicance to use laptops on the plane anyway!

I have not read anything regarding changes to electronic carryons anywhere except here!

About cell phones, just saw on internet cell phones that are actually small guns. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen the video of how they operate. I don't think the airports will want people demonstrating how they work like they do a gameboy!!!! I will gladly pack away my cell phone under the current circumstances.

I just called Southwest. The person I talked to said that they have not been told that cell phones, personal CD players, and electronic games are prohibited. (In other words, it should be OK to bring them on board, and CD players and games can be played, as usual, during flight but not during take-off and landing.)

Also, she said copies of birth certificates for the kids are OK, and that photo ID or original birth certificates for kids are not necessary.

Last but not least, she said that we only need to arrive 2 hours ahead of time for our flight next week, not 4 as we heard on the news recently. (Whew! That would have meant getting to the airport at 3:30 in the morning!)

... you are flying through an airport where they share a concourse. Check with the airport itself.

I just changed our return flight for next week, which was at 7:40. SW told me that they were now back to recommending only showing up an hour early, but I checked with MCO, and they told me that they are still recommending 2-3 hours there. At my home airport, SW has its own concourse, and the airport told me that processing is shorter on that concourse than the others. (It took a little argument, but SW switched us to a midafternoon flight -- nothing is booked solid right now.)

In most airports you have to go through security with passengers on all carriers, and even with international passengers in some cases. I would not trust any one airline to be sure of security processing times unless they were the only ones using a particular concourse.

Anyone else see the Court TV segment where a prisoner (charged with murder anyway) overtook a reporter, held her with her arm behind her back and had a pen ready to stab her in the side of the neck? Someone finally got a clear shot of him -- literally -- and saved the woman.
So I can see where a pen/pencil could become a deadly weapon.
My friend's traveling friend had a rat tail comb, nail scissors and a compact mirror confiscated from the carry on luggage Saturday.
Someone on the Collector's Board posted that their Disney pins WERE allowed in their carry on.
To be safe, in future flights I am just contacting the airline directly and asking.
Just to extra precaution when packing carry on items.

We're flying America West in October and Delta in November. I'll give each airline a call when it gets closer to our travelling dates. I was just hoping that there was a uniform list published somewhere, but it sounds like it depends on the airline and the airport.

I'm hoping that walk-mans will be allowed. My DD loves to listen to books on tape and they keep her occupied for along time.

Also, has anyone had any trouble gate-checking a stroller?

Thanks again,
Mary :)

USAirways has a note on their website saying their carry on policy has not changed. I've previously taken my laptop, walkman, cellphone on board, so I assume this means they are still allowed.

I asked Delta if 1.need special ID for kids under 18? -- NO
2.can you have matches/lighters in your carry-on?(my mom smokes)- YES
3.can you have gameboys/cd/tape players ? Yes again.

Seems as alot of the regular things are being allowed still. Hope this helps some.

DH just called me from the plane. He said O'hare is relatively empty. Had to travel on business today ( I don't think I slept a wink last night). But we have great confidence in our air system right now. He was using the cell phone to call me with no problem. I made him leave the disposable razor at home.

SWA is allowing gameboys, laptops and cellphones. In fact, one passengar was talking on his cell phone as we were boarding, they gave the usual speech that they needed to be shut off as we took off (cell phones for the duration of the flight) and landed. Laptops and gameboys were allowed to be used during the flight.
Pens and pencils were allowed as were lighters.

I just flew back from Atlanta Friday on AA. I had several items that I thought might be confiscated due to the rumors I'd heard, including an aerosol can of hairspray, nail clippers, a disposable razor, and my cell phone. They didn't even open my bag at all, just looked at it through the x-ray machine. There was even an ongoing announcement over the PA system when I walked by the Delta security gates telling people to put their cell phones in their CARRY-ON bags, as opposed to their checked luggage. I'm not sure why. Maybe the cell phones set things off when they x-ray checked baggage, and they're having to search too many bags only to find a cell phone? I don't know.

Anyway, I didn't have anything taken away from me, but it's still probably best to call you airline to check on approved items. AA was still allowing 2 carry-ons, but others airlines apparently allow only 1.

caitycaity,
Not sure what untrue info you are referring to, BUT, be aware, each airport sets their own standards. I did not encounter any restrictions at BDL or BWI, BUT DID at MCO. This was for SWA's concourse/gate.
I would be surprised if United was not taking an equal stand at their concourses also.
If you call SWA, you will not find that the list of items banned at Orlando is in their system.
Again, it is up to the airport security, as to what they will or will not allow at their airport.

Barb D

Gail, can you be more specific about what was not allowed in carry-on baggage from MCO, especially if it was allowed from BWI?

We're flying from BWI to MCO and back on Southwest.

GAIL HAYDEN

In Orlando, nail files(metal), scissors of any kind, corkscrews, can openers, wallet chains and nail clippers were not allowed. There is a large chart at security telling you, along with pictures, what is not allowed.
From BWI, I saw no such chart or restrictions. Which is not to say they were not there, I may have missed it. However, at BWI, our digital camera batteries set off quite a bit of concern.
They inspected and dusted the laptop, the camera, the case and the batteries and charger for explosive powder. So, my advice, don't take batteries in your carry on unless it is in something like a game boy, mine were loose. Trust me, on the return, they were in my checked baggage. :) The cell phones did not raise an eyebrow.
Barb, I have to say that I was impressed with security, they were efficient, polite and did not make us feel like criminals. This, btw, was for the security checkpoint for SWA, I did not scope out any other airline. Just saw the massive lines at MCO for other airlines. SWA moved rapidly, not more than a ten minute wait to check in the bags at the counter. About a two minute wait for security before going to the gate.
Hope this helps. Be happy to answer anything else that you need. :)

We will be flying soon on SWA from BDL to BWI round trip. I was wondering how early you arrived at the two airports. BWI is saying to arrive 4 hours early--did you find this necessary?

Thanks for your help.

>> Don't take batteries unless they are in a Gameboy...

Careful. Each electronic item needs to have working batteries in it so it can be demonstrated in front of the security agent. This is a common test they use to judge whether the electronic item is not itself a bomb.

Another advantage of getting to the airport extra early, in case of dispute over what is allowed, there will be time to move it to checked baggage, or even create a piece of checked baggage for it.

TwinKAT,
I was at BWI for a connecting flight, so, I never saw the ticket counter. We did leave the airside to catch a smoke and some food, but, the security line to get back in was short and would have been quick if I had not had the dig. camera and laptop and batteries.

Seashore,
You misquoted me. I said :"So, my advice, don't take batteries in your carry on unless it is in something like a game boy". We did not have to turn on the computer or the digital camera, they "dusted" it for explosives. Imagine if they did make you demonstrate your game boy, or whatever, and it was an explosive device. I think the dusting is a bit safer, don't you?

Gail: A few years ago, I had to show them my beeper worked. I guess if a person refused, you'd know something was wrong with it, if you know what I mean. Dusting makes more sense.

We're just back from WDW. We went BWI to MCO and back. We got to BWI 2.5 hours early on Tuesday. (We planned on three, but forgot something and had to go back home!) Our flight was at 7:40AM and we got there about 5:10AM. The SWA baggage check-in line snaked around and around, and back and back and back...but moved pretty fast. It took us about an hour to get through checking baggage and about 15 minutes for security. Security just scanned everything with the machine and didn't take any longer than normal. We would have needed more time if we'd been selected for the hand check, but we weren't. Also, if we had had to go back and check in something that had been rejected by security that would have taken an extra hour. So yes, it probably is a good idea to give it 3 hours.

This morning we got to MCO about 2 hours early, and had plenty of time. (We had another REALLY early flight, so later in the day it might have taken more time.)

BTW, my kids both had pretty full back packs with school books, electronic games, a CD player, etc. and had no problems at all with security.

My friend just flew in for the F1 race this w/e in Indy from CA. She got her tweezers through one airport, but the next one took them.
