Be sure to allow lots and lots of time before your departure to get through security. The NY area airports are easily reporting minimums of 1 1/2 hours to get through the check-in procedures.

We are having a big problem here in St. Louis with people being so paranoid that they are showing up 8 and 9 hours before their flights. This was causing the folks who came 2-3 hours early to be so far back in the lines that they missed their flights altogether.

What they have asked here is that you not show up between 2 and 3 hours early, but not more than 3 hours before your flight, or at least that you not get into the checkin line before then.

It only took my cousin 2.5 hrs out of San Diego. 8 - 9 hrs ahead is ridiculous. I saw on Delta's site that you can check bags 4 hrs prior, so 8 - 9 hours is way to soon, obviously.

The problem in St. Louis is not the people but rather the airlines. They should have had agents checking in peole based on departure time, sending back to the end of the line anyone not departing so soon.

With this in mind the airlines are responsible for letting people who missed their flights get on the next flight at no extra charge and not lose their return flight for being a no show on the outgoing flight.

If you think you will miss your flight because the line is too long, and if you are daring, jump into the first class and premier check in line (if that still exists). If you want an excuse for doing this, read the first paragraph of this reply.
