We are scheduled to fly non-stop on United out of O'Hare to Orlando on Oct. 12th returning on Oct. 20th. We have a 4 & 5 year old that are now very afraid to fly. I personally am concerned there are still terrorists out there. When we do go to war how often will the FAA shut down the airports? If all the carriers downsizing, how soon in advance do they have to notify us that our flight has been cancelled? We still have a few weeks to go but, it's VERY unsettling. At this point, we are leaning towards driving. How far in advance do we have to notify Untied that we are going to cancel our reservations and what are the chances under the circumstances that they won't charge us the $400.00 penalty?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

The best source of information on cancellations/refunds/rebooking options is your airline's web site. Here is a link to United's site:

IMHO, no one can really answer your questions about the FAA closing airports or the chances of getting a refund without a penalty. I am not afraid to fly right now, but many people are. Only you can decide what to do for your family. Since you and your children are so afraid right now, my best advice is not to make any quick decisions. Give yourself a couple of weeks to see how things play out. Perhaps your fear will lessen. If not, no harm done as, at least for now, United is not waiving the penalties past 9/29.
I'm sure you will do whatever is right for your family. Best wishes.

Carol that was wonderful! in light of what is happeneing around the country I suggest waiting right now because things have changed so many times int he past 72 hrs on policies and procedure god only knows how many more will go into effect. if your flight is cancelled they will call and tell you. they have a team of people specifically for this.but also call and check on your flight periodically. you will be much safer now to fly with all the security measures in place.
