View Full Version : Poll -- When for a Annual Adult & Solo get together.

Every so often the thread about the adult and solo annual event bubbles up to the top. As far as I can tell it never happened but it seems like the interest is there. So just out of curiousity I thought I'd post a poll. When would be the best month for YOU for such an event? Be a little more specific in the body of your post... For example I love the timeframe of the Food and Wine Festival but I'm going to pick November as the month. Lots of people but not too crowded, not too warm, not too likely to have hurricanes, plenty to do. To narrow it down I'd pick a weekend that was not Jersey week even if that means it is Halloween.

PS. I let you pick multiple months but it would be a lot more meaningful if you can pick one. Then people would be able to target a specific month for a solo trip that would be more likely to give an opportunity for meeting up for dining or a group could more easily target some place for a weekly get together that month like Thursdays in May at the Adventurers Club starting at 9PM.

DH and I go every year in October and May, so either month is great for us!

I voted for January, but I think that any month (okay any non-busy month) would work as long as there was enough notice! I think that this is a great idea...

Well, I have loved my May trips, but since I won't be able to return until Oct next year, that is how I voted. Since we (Canadians) celebrate our Thanksgiving the second weekend in Oct, I would vote for sometime during the last two weeks of Oct :goodvibes

Interesting...so far Oct thru Jan seems to have a large number of fans. And May is an outlier.

I voted December, same time as Mousefest!

What would any one actually want to do for such a gathering? Where to first meet and what to do for the meeting?

some people meet over at DD, some like to meet in the parks, some like meet over dinner at a WDW resort, just depends.

you meet the people in person, that you read here on the DIS.

It can be fun or overhelming....

I need to lose weight before I meet with anyone!

I voted for Dec, Sept, May - for Dec 1-18 - I am not even going near the parks closer to Christmas.....

if you decide that you like someone you can exchange phone numbers. and make your internet friends into real friends!!!

Sure I know how dismeets have worked thus far. I'm kind of looking for something consist that a shy first time solo person would be willing to do and that people who live in the area would enjoy doing a number of times. More along the lines of a psuedo club meet.

I used to belong to a ski club that focussed on adults only. Making new people...specifically solos...comfortable enough to come back another time was a priority particularly in the fall when new people were most likely to show up. Otherwise board members or former board members made an effort to be friendly the rest of the year. The club had the advantage of meeting in a bar the same day almost every week of the year. It'd be nice if this group could get some type of consistent meeting place together...Raglan Road, Adventurers Club, a light breakfast in the Magic Kingdom. I know people get together for dinner and all but for a shy solo that's a big commitment. Showing up at the Adventurers Club for a drink and a little comedy is no commitment. Showing up for the Diamond Horseshoe would have been even less...too bad the show doesn't run anymore.

I guess there are other options like Jellyrolls or the boardwalk.

bumpity bump...39 replies does not a statistically valid poll make! Not that I expect to get a statistically valid poll. Still looking like October, December, January and May!

My guess would be...a combination of New Years but more likely the marathon (January).

...Flower & Garden...and there is something else in May but I don't recall what...not Mother's Day.

Mickey's Not So Scarey and Food and Wine for October...

MVMCP and the Christmas Holidays for December.

I was kind of hoping people would post when/why they go in a given month too...

May has a couple of things - but besides F&G - my favorite - Star Wars Weekend!!!!

I think May or even early December are some of the better times to go........usually the crowds are manageable the weather is usually good.....being a FL resident I can say that January is probably one of the worst weather months down here even for you northerners! It is usually gray and can sometimes be rainy and cold. With May you have the Flower and Garden Festival and also the concerts associated with it. December you have all the decorations.
October is also a good month because of the Food and Wine Festival and later in the month the weather is usually very pleasant. Both the F&G and F&W gives adults (who are the ones that are usually solo) things to do and enjoy.

I voted for Oct. because we can do a Food & Wine festival or MNSSHP get-together.

i voted for september and wished i could have voted for 2 months.

i go solo and always go the last week of sept, around the 26th and stay 2 weeks. return on columbus day in october.

i prefer this time because:
i book during value season and it continues at that rate for my entire stay.
food & wine festival....it starts around sept 30
mnsshp....same start day as above.

weather is still great to my liking....can be hot or only up to 83 degrees.
less rain
less crowds.

and i shouldn't say this here but i hope over to universal for the second weekend of october to catch hhn there.

Early December!

Ten years ago RADP (UseNet group rec.arts.disney.parks) decided to have a get-together the first weekend of December. It has since expanded and is now Mousefest which ties in all the major online groups except DisBoards and has about five days of activities at WDW plus a lot of people will go on the cruise and continues there. See www.mousefest.org for more information.

I am sitting here wearing my "Third Annual RADP Meet" T-Shirt (and 10th Annual button), getting ready to to go the "MegaMouse Meet" today where there will be about 20 groups and Guidebook authors set up.

Wow...

Mousefest sounds like a really great starting point. I'd guess its too late to get it going but so many go in December that it seems the first three weeks might a good starting point to work with.

Another bump!!! Now that we are past the surge of fall/December travelers I think its a good time to see if people will pick other months. Although its really clear that food and wine and mousefest are the front runners.

I have to admit I'm glad!!! Food & Wine is my favorite time of the year to go.

And FYI you can pick more than one season...but only at the time you vote.

I like October as long as the storms steer clear. The problem with early December is that with Mousefest happening at that time, although there are lots of DISers around, yet another meet might be too much and conflict with Mousefest activities, leading many to just not show up.

I originally suggested an "Annual WDW Solos Meet," but responses were for almost every month of the year, so nothing ever came of it except individuals meeting for meals when around. I hope you can put something together. :earsgirl:

I voted for Dec also based on Mousefest dates. I tend to like smaller meets where I can be with a smaller number of people. Those shy people can get very overwhelmed by the large meets. So, if they can get to a small meet, then meet up with some more 'experienced' folks, they can then tag along to the larger meets and be a bit more comfortable. It worked for me.

Actually its your original post that inspired me. The individual replies really muddied up the waters. With this poll you can see where the biggest draws are for solo travelers. F&G, F&W and Mousefest/Christmas. However even with this poll people don't realize they can vote for multiple months so its still skewed towards people's next trips rather than the times they would go.

I can see the problem with Mousefest. Essentially that is one big meet. One way to get around it is to pick one of the mousefest events as the meeting place for a build up event towards the Solo Meet at a different time of year. The other thing is to avoid equating solo and single. There definitely is a difference and working the "single" angle reduces the number of people who might want to attend significantly.

Now the problem with this meet is that people have different schedules. I'm hoping people can come up with a way to handle that. I have a notion about it but I need to stew on it a little more.

That is why I always referred to "WDW Adult Solos" and never "singles." :earsgirl:

Like macraven, I was unable to vote for multiple months. It was only accepting one selection.

Darn, dh is a teacher, and I go to college. I will not ever be able to go when you all want to. Hmmppph.

Mousefest sounds like fun, too, but it is during finals for us. Gonna have to make a DIS educators get-together.

Another vote for an educator-friendly date! :) I usually go end of May/beginning of June (my school ends right before Memorial Day). That usually lets me hit the Flower & Garden festival *and* Star Wars weekends, and the crowds are usually quite reasonable. I'd love to go the 1st week or so of Dec, but that would be really tricky to schedule.

And, while waiting for the "official" meet to get scheduled, anyone want to join me for a margarita sometime between June 4 and 8?

Yay! October was my vote and it's the most popular! We always go in Oct. for Food and Wine Festival and MNSSHP. It would be cool to meet up with others. DH and I are one of those young couples with no kids, and it's always fun to find others that enjoy disney regardless of anything else.

this sounds interesting... found the thread over in the search for single disney guys. I live about 1-2 hours away so any time would be good. I have resv. for mousefest and also for pirate and princess party. I think the date Im doing is Feb 23, 07.

I would want to know when these are done. I may not be able to do some of them if I have to work or other plans. Im game though... a 10 on the Disney Scale.

I'll be at WDW December 4-12, 2006, attending Mousefest and open to meeting with whomever for a meal, at a mutually convenient time.
