Does anyone know what kind of tree that has lime green, softball sized "fruit" or seed pods. You can see them by the side of the road this time of year, usually squashed by cars as they run over them. Do they have a seed, or nut inside? We used to call them "monkey brains", since they have a 'brainey' texture to them.

does the fruit look like this: http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.forestryimages.org/images/768x512/0008279.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.forestryimages.org/browse/detail.cfm%3Fimgnum%3D0008279&h=512&w=768&sz=102&tbnid=wwRAFkuTzoIJ:&tbnh=94&tbnw=141&hl=en&start=8&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dblack%2Bwalnut%2Btree%26svnum%3D10%26 hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26rls%3DGGLD,GGLD:2004-23,GGLD:en%26sa%3DN
If so...that's a black walnut tree!

No, they are bigger, with a definite "brainey" looking texture to them. I don't think they are edible.

I know what you are talking about but I do not know the name. A friend has one in her yard. We cut one open once it was real sticky inside. We were hoping you could "dry" them because they are so cool looking.

I checked with my horticulturist husband because we have those around here too and he says it's an Osage Orange tree. I don't know how to post a link but if you google it, you should be able to double check that's what you're seeing.

Yep,
odds are an osage orange.
