T-shirt tips

How sad am I?

Since I get asked these questions a lot – I decided to write a t-shirt report –

After actually executing a shirt plan and washing and wearing them for a week at WDW I have a lot of tips and will show you the designs – the shirt and someone wearing the shirt (all of the pictures of the shirts are either after they had been worn - as evidenced by the mickey bar chocolate on them!!! or had been washed)

I did notice that the more solid a design was - e.g. a lot of black - the harder it was to transfer and ended up with some spots on the design

The shirts that go the best reactions were those that were personalized and clearly not bought at WDW –

I would not use any other transfer paper except this:

http://stores.ebay.com/Heat-Transfer-Supplies

I tried a lot of brands and this is by far the best and held up the best

The dark transfer paper held up the best – if you have a design that you can easily trim – I definitely recommend the dark transfer paper

For the adult shirts – I made the design as big as I could for my printer. – I recommend that you import the jpeg files into word and then size and print them from there – that is how I was happiest with my print quality

For the 8 - teen shirts – I made the designs about 9 inches tall - this was a great size for their shirts

For the toddler to 7 year old shirts – I made the design about 8 inches tall

And the baby shirts – up to 3t – I made them 5x7

I ironed directly on my kitchen island – it is Formica. I didn’t put anything under the shirts – I found any extra fabric left the possibility for lumps that would hurt the transfer. I rotated around my island as I ironed so that one area would not get too hot – I found once it was really hot – it seemed to confuse the transfer and it didn’t know where to stick – the shirt or the paper

Do not iron on your wood table:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b17/disneyshirts/Summer2005653.jpg

My attempt at a front and back failed – I tried to put it on my pizza stone but it is well loved and not conducive to an ironing situation. If I were doing it again – I would probably go ahead and iron a back on my ironing board.

Make sure you wait until the paper cools before you peel – your quality will be much better

When preparing your shirts – wash them without fabric softener

After you have made them – wash them inside out – I do not recommend washing them in between applying your transfer and the first time you wear them. Although I found that I could wear most of mine again – some of them for whatever reason did not agree with the washer and/or dryer

I found the 100% cotton tees accepted the shirt best – but the 50/50 blends worked out well too. Any shirts that were stretchy or had spandex did not work well at all – I do not recommend these.

You really go above and beyond! I am getting ready to do my Tee's and this information is just awesome!

When you get a chance, can you add places to buy the blank tee shirts? Or maybe others can we share it in this post?

Thanks for all the hard work !!!!!!!

YOU ROCK!!!!!!!

Those are great, Kate! How was the light Ebay paper? I have 20 of each type for our trip. Do you have a picture of Julia and Nick in their Princess and Toy Story shirts? And the name ones really look good. I see why the Figment got attentions. It stands out on the purple. Rees will like the Meg (or as he says "Megan") from Hercules (he's picked Herc for Halloween). Maybe we could start a little internet romance between them? :rotfl:

thanks everyone - I bought my shirts at www.blankshirtstore.com - the women's anvil 100% cotton

I bought Nick's rigner tees at Old Navy

and most of Julia's shirts were hanes easy clean or blank shirts from wal-mart

those were my favorite - I really liked the ringer tees from old navy!!

I think dye sublimation is for a special pritner - you should buy the light and dark paper for inkjet printers

Denise - I really liked the light paper as well - it is the best I have used - still not as good as the dark though

They all look so great! I'm really wracking my brain to figure out what I'd like for shirts. I'd definitely like to surprise my hubby with one for our January trip. Have you done sweatshirts? I'm just thinking we might be better off with a sweatshirt for January instead of a t-shirt.

On another site it says to transfer with iron, pile up 15 sheets of regular papers instead of an ironing board.....

Has anyone used sheets of paper in between the t-shirt?
Does this sound right; I place the t-shirt on an ironing board, then place 15 sheets of paper in between and iron?

Have you done sweatshirts?

I have not - but other people have and as long as they are a cotton blend - you will have no problem!!

Has anyone used sheets of paper in between the t-shirt?
Does this sound right; I place the t-shirt on an ironing board, then place 15 sheets of paper in between and iron?

I would think that paper in between would burn - but not sure - if you iron straight onto the ironing board it absorbs the heat and the transfers don't stay as well. With that said - before I became an "expert" at this - I used my ironing board and although it was okay -the results on my formica coutertop are WAY better!!

I see you used a lot of white shirts. I never wear white, yikes, but it seems to go with most designs. Not sure what colors I should be getting...

I really like the designs that I used the dark paper for - I thought they turned out great - if your design has a border - I would consider other color shirts - but I like designs that are free flowing without borders as well and then I really reccomend a white or light grey shirt - light pink worked pretty well also

Especially the TikiRoom one - is that a WPASADI inspiration? of course - I loved our little immunity idol and wanted to keep him around!!!!

Would you mind sharing where you got the disney font with all of the characters in the letters

it is called agent orange and I am pretty sure it came from dafont.com - pm me your email address if you can't find it and I will email it to you - the first time I did a shirt like this it took about an hour - now it takes me about 5 minutes since it is just a matter of rearranging characters - if you want me to design it for you - I would be more than happy to!!!!

Just another note on cheap shirts, Cheapestees.com has some great prices and tons of sizes. I order Gildan shirts from there and they are 1.98 I think for the white adult sizes and a little less for childrens sizes. Oh and the order arrived within 3 days of ordering....they are really quick.

julia & nicks mom

On ebay they do sell different quantities - you can click on the link in the auction to her store to find lower quantities

99% of my designs have held up pretty well - we wear them around our house all the time - I find that if it is a design without a lot of ink - it seems to hold up better on the light paper - if it has a lot of paper - you should use the dark paper - I have not had any dark paper designs crack or peel

make sure you wash and dry them inside out and do use fabric softener on them before you iron on the transfer

Can you go over about the light/dark transfer paper...I just don't get it.

Also, what type of shirt is better for iron on transfers...100% cotton or 50/50?
