I am planning on making theses shirts for all of the family that is going in Apr. So it's going to 4 adult females, 2 males and 4 little ones. Does anyone suggest a specific brand of T-shirt? I am also specifically looking to get shirts that are cut for women. Any thoughts on where to get those?

I use hanes, fruit of the loom unisex type shirts 100% cotton, those are great because of the cotton count.
Women fitted shirts try merona from Target, I had used those a lot, v and crew neck, just make sure you don't dry them all the way, low dry or go one size bigger, also the fitted shirts from Michael's Jerzzes (spelling?) you can check here for directions:

Thanks for the info Pixie!
I got a tshirt from JoAnn Fabrics yesterday to use for the trial run and I realized after the fact that it's a 50/50 blend, not 100% cotton. Is that going to make a really noticable difference? I even got it from the same aisle as the tie dye kits! I WILL make sure to get 100% whenever I do the ones that are going to be for the family.

Oh bummer, well it does make a difference with the colors, you colors would be pastels and not really vivid, if you want them just to practice that would be fine then. I made the same mistake on my very first shirts ;) so don't feel bad.
Next time make sure they're 100% cotton, the thicker the cotton the better. Wal mart has organic cotton faded glory brand and those are great as well.

Great too know! I really want to do the red and black ones for my daughters and nieces. When I saw them in your post, I knew the girls would love them. they all have little re\black Minnie mouse hair clips, so they would go together perfect. My wife and sis-in-law have done 95% of the planning so this will be my major contribution!

Cool! You can do it. I don't know what kind of dye you have, if you want them to look vivid like the ones I made I can help you with the colors mix, depending on the kind of dye, also if you want some white on them. Black is fun to work with.

Tulip kit with red, yellow and blue.
Then I bought a separate one of black (also tulip)
And the soda ash was Tulip as well. It all came from JoAnn fabrics.
I do have a Wal Mart, Michael's, Target and other non big chain crafts places nearby, so I can probably get most things that you may suggest. I'll have to post the Minnie Mouse hair clips. But they would be perfect with the red\black combo. I think the adults are okay with whatever colors we do. Any suggestions you give will be taken as Gospel!!!!

Did the stitching and soda ash on Sunday.
Did the swirling, rubber banding and dying tonight!
I am afraid that I didn't use enough rubber bands around the Mickey ears. It seemed like the black crept past the rubber bands. But at least I know now before I go to make the good ones. So tomorrow night I'll rinse them out in the utility tub and drop them in the washer (warm, right?)
I've seen mention of synthropol(?) What is it and where can it be bought?

Yes, lots of rubber bands really thigh, some times the dye gets past the rubber bands anyway.

Tomorrow after 24 hours had past, rinse them in the sink or tub, squeeze the excess dye, then to the washer.
You can find Synthropol at AC moore or Art store, but if you don't have it you can also use Cheer or any mild soap, sprinkle some salt also.

We have Dreft and All (free and clear & for colors)in the house.
I did get the iron on rhinestones to outline the Mickey ears for the little girls in the family ( and maybe my bro-in-law to embarass him ;-)
I didn't think about the bows. How do you add them? Do you make them and sew them on?

With the same ribbon just make a little bow and then hand sew it.

OK, here was my first attempts!
The 2nd one was a 50/50 shirt and the 1st one was 100% cotton. There was a HUGE difference in how the colors came out (dull vs. very crisp and vibrant)
The one where the Mickey ears look like a heart...that one needed more rubber bands around the Mickey ears! Lesson learned. Thes pics were after I rinsed, but before I washed them. I think I may outline the 'heart' one with rhinestones so that it's not a complete waste. I'm pleased with the other one tthough.

Very nice for your first time :thumbsup2 Yes, the 50/50 is just no good tie dye, the other shirt you can fix it with the stones or with fabric marker, or bleach pen.
Great job, your spiral looks nice and not a lot of white :cheer2:

Happy St. Patric's day Polo.

Tank top.

http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/Fantasia1972/IMG_0889.jpg

I made this tank top for a friend but I got too much white on it, I was worried that too much dye would messed up the design I had in mind so i didn't apply lot of dye. I love the way it looks but it bothers me so I going to re do it.

I have noticed that your shirts tend to be a lot more vivid and brighter. Is that due to the dyes you use or just the 100% cotton factor or because of the technique..or maybe a combination of factors?
I am going to attempt to do four of them before a trip in May and I want to get ALL of my stuff together before making the attempt.

It might be a combination of factors. I use of course 100% cotton, heavy cotton and organic cotton, the better the quality of the shirt the best it would look. Also I use dharma fabric reactive dye, its much better than the kits dye, except jacquard kits.

Have fun making your shirts. Make sure you get enough supplies for all your shirts to make them at once, dye varies depending of the mix lots, the colors might not be the same. Take your time, your trip is not until May so you have time.

:thumbsup2 Good Luck.

I saw someone did stitch and tink shirts. Where did you get the outline? I'd love to make these for our upcoming trip and my boys love stitch, and I love tink. Also can you get dye in many different colors? I'd love to make DH a camoflauge colored one. He's in Iraq right now, National Guard, and I think I could get him to agree with wearing one if its camo colored, but not sure if those colors are available. Thanks for any help.

Something you can also do that is MUCH easier is to print and cut out the shape. Order some tie dye shirts (including camo) from https://www.tiedyeusa.com/scripts/live.wsc/site.w?location=olc/catalog.w&top=catalog&parent=1000&action=showAll&frames=no&target=main&sponsor=000001. Go to the post office and get some priority mail boxes (the skinny ones) and put them inside the shirt (leave them flat, it's to protect the back). Mix 1 part bleach to 3 parts water in a fine mist spray bottle. Lay the shirt outside on a hard surface and place the cut-out shape. Lightly spritz around the shape, then carefully lift it off to not spill any bleach solution that may have puddled. Put the shirt in the wash within about 5-10 minutes. I use a product called "Bleach Stop", but I understand that vinegar works OK, too. It makes a very cool shirt with a lot less hassle than the tie dye process (believe me, I know ;) ) This is obviously not something little kids can do (bleach), but they can help place the shapes or even cut them out. We always get lots of comments on ours.

Oh that sounds easy for the tink and stitch shirts. Do you have any pictures of the shirts you did this way? I'd love to see them. I know for sure we are going to do the Mickey ones ourselves, my kids love to tie dye, but for the extra shirts I wouldn't be opposed to something easier!

I LOVE THIS!!

Did you use the basic technique from page #1 of this thread?

How did you get the MM head so pink and keep so much white around it?

Where your pink and purple colors are, is the design like that because of where you put your rubberbands?

Once you have if rubberbanded, you just die each section with a different color die?

Sorry to ask so many questions, trying to get brave enough to try this.
Thanks!

Yes is the same, I just place the Ears on another areas.

How did you get the MM head so pink and keep so much white around it?
That was from the rubber bands and once it was tied I didn't applied too much dye, therefore the front has a lot of white.

Where your pink and purple colors are, is the design like that because of where you put your rubberbands?
Yes is how you applied the day and the rubberbands.

I'm getting really peeved with my stuff. I put countless rubberbands around the MM heads and have them so tight it hurts my fingers to loop them one more time :rotfl2: but I STILL cannot get clear white definition like your's and I'm two steps from tossing them all out the frappin window. GRRRRRRRR and the trip is 3 weeks from Friday.

Part of it is also not over-saturating the Mickey part so the dye wicks up. Are you leaving the shirt damp after soaking in the soda ash solution? Sometimes dry fabric wicks more. When I did these, I'd spin mine out in the washer which left just enough moisture. Something else you can do is the bleach technique (spray bleach solution mentioned earlier) if you want to lighten the area around the Mickey or correct any boo-boos.

Yes that too, if you put a lot of dye then it would go all over the place. My shirts are always wet, not soaking dripping wet but with enough water to get pretty patterns, the dye needs the soda ash water to be "fixed" > I just wring them with my hands and then apply the dye. You can use bleach pen to outline your mickey after your shirt is washed and dry. :thumbsup2

I also made these dresses, it was a lot of work I got frustrated too just a little :rolleyes1 :cloud9: but they turned out cool, the first one has a lot of white the second one I added more dye.

I'm leaving them wet after soaking. Maybe I'm just using too much dye on the mm head. Who knows. I do know I'm getting pissed though :rotfl2: Gonna try one more time then I'm done. Making this southern girl growwwwwllllllllllllll. :rotfl2:

Yes, wet is fine, not dripping but wet and try less dye, put a little but kind spread it with your hand a little and you can tell when you have enought. Good Luck and I know it gets frustrating sometimes, just take a break and have fun.

After you baste Mickey, when do you pull out the dental floss that you used to baste him with?

Must you do a Mickey on the front and back?

Thanks!

After you finish dying the shirt, CAREFULLY snip the dental floss and pull it out before dropping it in the washing machine (or however you decide to rinse).

I never did a Mickey on the back unless it was requested, so it's really up to you. I got much better results one layer at a time.

When I was making mine, I'd spread the shirt on the top of the work table and as I was twisting to the spiral, I would use my other hand to pleat, pleat, pleat. I wanted the "disk" to be no more than about 2" thick in order to get good dye application. I also worked with the shirts slightly damp (spun them out in the washer.

So you use the bleach pen after you wash and dry...then how long do you leave it on? and then you wash again I assume
