Rules on car seats for air travel?

Traveling on Oct 17 on Delta. I have purchased DS, 14 months his own seat. Just planning and need to know if he must be in FAA approved car seat, or can he ride on my lap for take off and landing, can he ride in his seat alone (he's 30 lbs). Any help appreciated! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

I would call the airline and ask this question. From what I understand they do have to be FAA approved (your car seat should have a sticker regarding this.) I would NEVER advise holding a child in a lap on take off or landing, always, if possible keep them buckled up.
As in a car, G-d forbid something happens, your child become a projectile. If you have spent the money for the seat, then, use the seat.

The same safety rules apply to air travel as auto travel. A 30 lb. 14 month old should not be restrained by a lap belt only and needs a restraint system (carseat). Your carseat should have a sticker saying approved for air travel (if it is so) as well as an indication in the owner's manual. You install the seat in the airplane the same as in your car. Now as far as leaving the baby on your lap...the child is safest strapped in the seat, no question. However, "rules" do allow a 14 month old baby to travel on your lap so if you choose to hold him that way, you may.

The sticker on my carseat is TINY, and is on the back. It doesn't say anything about the FAA, just that it is approved for air travel.
