View Full Version : Do you care if money for Katrina is used for Rita?

I just read in the Washington Post that many charities are in a bind, because almost all of the contributions made recently were requested to specifically go to Hurricane Katrina relief. The Red Cross particularly doesn't want to get in trouble like it did after 9/11 using funds donated for one purpose for other things. But Catholic Charities said they will use Katrina money for victims of Rita, because it will be victimizing some of the same people again. Does it matter to you if money you send in for one Hurricane's victims is used for the victims of another? Personally, as long as it goes to people in the most need I think charities should have some flexibility to shift money to new disasters. I'm just hoping Rita is no where near as bad as Katrina....

I believe that unfortunately, many of the people affected by Katrina will get double whammied by Rita.

I don't have a problem if my Red Croos, or Noah's Wish, or Habitat or etc. donation goes to help Rita victims as well. I also donated to some charities very specific to NOLA, and I do want that money to stay in NOLA.

I don't have a problem either. If they need money for Rita, I will help out as best I can.

They should use the money wisely where it can do the most good, whether the victims are from Katrina or Rita.

The money I've given to the national organizations (the YMCA and the Red Cross) should be used wherever it is most needed.

The sign at the register at my local Publix has always stated "Hurricane Relief Fund" I suspect that our local Red Cross was still recovering from last season when Katrina hit.

Well, actually I do care. I have a home in New Orleans and gave a lot of money to a couple of organizations specifically for Katrina relief because it is my home.

Yes, I will donate to Rita also, but not to the extent that I gave for Katrina.

I give more money to my home church than I do to churches that I visit in other cities - it's sort of like that.

I lived in Houston in the past, but I feel that Texas does not have the poverty levels that Louisiana does. Not to say there isn't poverty in Texas (because there is), but Houston is so much better off than New Orleans.

The money we gave can be used for those who need it most. It does not matter to us.

This makes me kind of mad. A lot of people got their panties in a wad when the American Red Cross used money that was donated "for" 9/11 was used for other emergencies. The internet was just full of advice on how to earmark your donations to make suer that they were not used for somehting other than Katrinia relief. And now people are gettin gupset because charities now have all the funds earmarked...

I wish people would get over themselves and let charities do their job without micromanaging them with earmarked donations.

When I gave money for "Katrina", Rita was only a "tropical depression". I didn't just give money for NOLA but for all of the Gulf States. A hurricane is a hurricane and it is bad, no matter what they name it. Who ever needs it can have it.

As long as it is put to good use for hurricane victims, I have no problems with where the funds go.

I look at it as a gift. And once you give it away, then it is the recipients and they do what they need with it.

Same here! A child in need is a child in need.

I am fine as long as it is Rita, but not for any use.

Not at all. Our school is collecting backpacks with school supplies for the children displaced by Katrina. Last week we talked about how the school in TX collecting these may actually need them as well.

People in need are people in need. If a tornado hit Oklahoma tomorrow, those people will be no less in need than those in LA. There are still people in WV who were flood out 3 months ago in need of help. Talk about povert and disaster crossing.

So I give to reputable charities for the money to be used at their discretion.

Yes- I care. If the money was marked "Katrina" it needs to be used for Katrina.
