In the $284 BILLION highway bill, the pork is enormous. I heard today that there is a provision to build two bridges in Alaska to connect two islands that will serve a total of 50 people. The cost? $450 million dollars. Surely, less than half of that, we could buy every citizen a very nice boat or a snow cat or both.
Then there is the $3 million bill for the National Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio. What's a Packard anyway? The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan is only getting $1.5 million. I don't know what pork is headed to Ct. but I would gladly give it up and send it to the Gulf States. What a sensible idea. I hope when President Bush says we will raise the money by cutting spending, this is what he means. We could easily pay for the Gulf States by having a little less "bacon". What is your "favorite" pork project? And that's just the highway bill. I haven't even looked at the Farm Bill yet.

A Packard is a type of car from the early 1900s. http://www.packardmuseum.org/Packard_cars.jpg
My favorite pork project? I just saw where there is $14 million earmarked for the Children's Museum in Indianapolis. Now, I love the Children's Museum - but seriously - why is this on a highway bill? They charge admission most days - and have memberships as well. But $14 million? After researching, a museum spokesperson said they'd probably use the money to build a three-story, 900-car garage, with a pedestrian bridge to the museum. Let's cut that right out.

You know, I actually considered that THAT was the "Packard" they were referring to but not in my wildest imaginings could I envision that much money for car museum. It just didn't click! Wow, a parking garage? Obviously people are getting there now without the parking garage. Yup, that can go.

I've been thinking about that "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska, too. Apparently it's to link an island to the mainland, to facilitate access by cruise ship passengers. Yeah, I think we could do without that. Uh, they got there by ship, I think they can take a BOAT to the island! Now that Katrina reconstruction may top $200 billion, I think it's time we go back and take another look at the Highway Bill. In addition to Congress getting together for an emergency spending measure, how about an emergency budget cutting session?? I don't think the money's been spent yet...

Thanks for posting that. I have tried to find some pork headed to Ct.'s way. Its not listed but I can't believe it isn't there. I am all for sending it back. It seems Americans are always happy when our Senators and Congressmen go to Washington and bring back the "bacon" for stuff we have all listed nicely without. This is a good time to live without government waste.

Pork projects....hmmmm
Im thinking of the movie "Dave" with Kevin Kline. You know the one where the real president has a stroke and they get an actor. One day they are talking about helping a childrens hospital with money and the guy who is really running the show (Chief of Staff) says, if you can find any extra money, you can use it.
Well "Dave" gets all his cabinet members together and they start asking questions on what can get cut and he questions the $20,000,000 earmarked for a Pork project on making customers feel more secure on their car purchase that they havent even made yet.
End of the scene shows them balancing the budget and saving the Childrens Hospital.
Most be the movies because nothing like that will really ever happen, no matter who is running the show.

Better yet it was for a car they already owned.
