View Full Version : A Warning for Walkers

Just wanted to remind all of you who are walking to get in shape for Dis-Con:
When you go out walking, please wear light-colored clothing after dark, and be very aware of your surroundings as you walk.
A driver (actually my next door neighbor) fell asleep at the wheel last night while he was driving home. Guess who was out walking? He hit me with his car. I saw him at the last minute and couldn't get out of his way. Fortunately he was only traveling at around 10 miles an hour. I was hit in the hip, rolled onto the hood, and hit his windshield when he woke up. Of course he slammed on his brakes, so I came back the way I went and hit the pavement.
Obviously, I'm fine. I have a very badly bruised hip and some cracked ribs. Luckily I wasn't walking with Bandit, otherwise he would have been killed.
The doctor says that it's going to take a while for my ribs to heal, because they can't be bandaged. I guess I'll wait and see how I feel in a few weeks before deciding whether to take my vacation late in September. :( I'm trying very hard not to be angry at my neighbor, but it's difficult. He is a recent immigrant from another country, and has no insurance. We'll see what the law does to him, then I guess I'll decide what to do.
Anyway, dear friends.....be careful out there!

Wow, Steve! So sorry to hear about your accident! Glad you (and Bandit :) ) are OK. Hope it doesn't spoil your trip plans.
We do our walking at one of the local high schools. We walk on their track. that way not only are we safe, but we also know exactly how far we are going There are usually a few other walkers out there, too, so we have support and company.
I'll second Steve's warning. All of you walkers please stay safe!

Steve: That was pretty scary! Down here we have pedestrian paths along the beach front and even then, once in a while, drunk drivers do get early morning athletes. :( I hope you will get better soon and that you will be able to go on with your plans. Oh boy! Oh boy! I am so glad Bandit wasn't there.

I hope that you'll be alright. Broken ribs can be so painful. You are so lucky to be alive, you could have just as easily be killed. Best wishes for a quick recovery.
Sincerely, Ray

Thanks everybody! Feeling much better this morning, though I don't think I'll be doing cartwheels any time soon. :D
I've decided to go ahead with my vacations plans for the end of September. I won't be able to do stuff like "Dinosaur" or RnR, but at least I'll be at WDW. :p

I am really happy you are feeling better this morning! Good you are able to stick to your plans with some adaptations. Well, this means that you will have to postpone your thrill rides fix for november, at DisCOn. Hummm, I can imagine the scene during ToT night. "Mommy, who is that strange man who has ridden ToT 75 times in two hours?"
Take care!

The doc says it could be up to six weeks or so for the ribs to heal up completely, so there's still hope for the thrill ride meet and the ToT. I just have to behave myself until then.
In the meantime, I treated myself to a Coca-Cola last night (first one in four weeks). I couldn't believe it....it tasted like pure sugar. Won't be doing that again for awhile! YUCK!! ;)

OMG Steve, I'm so sorry to read about your accident!! I'm also sorry it took me so long. I've been super busy getting ready for my FD's court next week. (It determines if we get to adopt her or not)
You will be in my prayers, and here's some Pixie Dust too :)
Yes, do take it easy and be careful, we want you to do the TOT at the DIS CON. :)
I also hope you can get some relief from the financial end of this, and justification from the neighbor.

A PSA from the "G.I. Joe" cartoon said to wear bright colors and reflectors if you are riding your bike after dark.
It wouldn't hurt to carry a flashlight too.
Now you know...and knowing is half the battle! :)

Please be careful of the ribs though, and if you happen to develop a cough don't wait to get it checked out. This is just a word of caution and I don't mean to sound morbid, but I recently lost a terrific person in the attorney I worked for because he developed pneumonia after cracking a couple ribs while on vacation.
There was an age difference though as Bill was 78, but he was in good health. He would go sailing for a month every August on Lake Huron off upper Michigan and while below deck during a storm he got knocked into something and cracked a couple ribs. About a week or so later he developed a cough that was enough to cause a friend who was with him to worry and call the Coast Guard to airlift him off the boat to a hospital, but it was too late, as he died the next morning. It was a great loss for those who knew him well and the legal profession as a whole, as he was one of the foremost estate planning attorneys in the country, not to mention an all around terrific person. I know that sounds to be a bit much, but I'm not fabricating that. He had been named to all eight issues of the Best Lawyers in America. He will be greatly missed by many who knew and loved him.
Anyway, I just wanted to caution you to be careful with the ribs. Here's a bit of Pixie Dust to help you on your way to recovery.
See you at the DIS con.

Hi everybody! Dan: LOL....but not too hard!
I'm doing pretty good today. Decided to come in to work, and this afternoon I'm going in for some kind of heat/sonic treatment that they say will speed the healing along a little bit. I'm going on vacation no matter what in 3 weeks, even if it means no TOT or Dinosaur or RnR. I'm a stubborn ol' mule, that's for sure.
Thanks to all of you for your good wishes, prayers and PD!

:) It sounds like you're on the right road (the road to recovery ;) ) Steve! :) Just keep following that road and you should end up in WDW in 3 weeks. :D :D :D
OMG, Steve, I'm sitting here, stunned. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt, and I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. Please, take it easy and take care of yourself.
