Pre-Trip Waffle
Back in May this year, MIL phones to ask if we’d like her and FIL to have DS for a week so we can go away together. Bless her! We are very lucky with DH’s parents. They adore DS and love to spend time with him. Anyway, DH and I start to discuss the possibility of a holiday this year. It’s been a pretty stressful few months, with DH living in Northern Ireland while I was still in England (up until Feb this year), lots of stuff going on with my DDs from my first marriage, moving to NI, a new job which I was hating etc. etc. So, we discuss the possibility of a week away. I try to persuade DH to go to DLP but he is not sure – he keeps saying it might be a let-down after WDW. The days pass and nothing has been decided.
1st July
I am at work when my boss calls me into her office to tell me I have been awarded a bonus this year. I have an idea. I duly call DH at work to give him the good news and try to sway him towards a holiday to DLP on the basis that I will pay with my bonus. But, instead of saying DLP when I speak to him, I say ‘Shall we go back to WDW?’ DH says we’ll discuss it later, which usually means he wants to say ‘No’ but doesn’t want a row while we are both at work. As soon as DS is in bed that night, having prepared DH’s favourite meal, we sit and discuss it. I ask, he says ‘Yes’. Simple as that. The only problem is we can only go for a week. Oh well. Better a week than not at all. So, we phone PILs and ask them what dates would be suitable – any time in the last 2 weeks of September. Next day, I’m on the phone to Virgin, asking for a week to Orlando, staying at the Holiday Inn International Drive (where we had our Virgin Welcome Meeting last year – we really liked the look of it), travelling on Monday 19th September. And, that’s it, all booked.
16th August
My two DDs visit us for two weeks, arriving today. As soon as they find out we are going to WDW they are not happy. They want to go too. They spend the entire two weeks telling us what fun it would be. After they’ve left to go back to Middlesborough, I get thinking. As they’re coming to live with us next year, I tell DH how nice it would be to take them to WDW – they’re 11 and 12 and have never been on holiday. After a couple of weeks of gentle persuasion and being presented with various ‘quotes’, DH agrees to book for next year. We book with Airtours – 2 weeks, travelling on 10th October 2006 staying at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at Sea World for me, DH and the two girls (an absolute bargain at just over £2400!). So, now I can be even more excited as I know this year’s trip won’t be the last. We decide we will surprise the girls at Christmas – keeping this a secret is gonna be hard but I really want to see their faces when we tell them so don’t want to break the news on the phone.
12th September (D-Day minus 1 week)
Still haven’t received our tickets – I’m determined not to panic but feel slightly concerned that they won’t arrive in time, as we’re flying to Norwich on Saturday morning to drop DS off at PILs. At lunchtime, I phone Virgin, who advise me that the tickets were sent on Saturday and should be with us any day. Fingers crossed!!!
13th September (D-Day minus 5)
The tickets still haven’t arrived. Now I am really panicking so I phone Virgin again. Speak to a guy who tells me our tickets are being sent out in the next couple of days. WHAT!!!! I explain to him that we need the tickets by Friday, at the very latest, and he tells me he will do his best. Determined to stay calm, I ask if I can speak to a supervisor. He puts me through to a lady called Alison in the ‘Dispatches’. Again, I explain the situation and, after a while, she tells me she has our tickets and will post them straight away on Special Delivery. Thank God!
14th September (D-Day minus 4)
The tickets arrive at lunchtime, as promised. Phew! At least now I can stop panicking. Only 4 more days to go.
16th September (D-Day minus 3)
DH and I are both off work today, to get organised and ready to fly to Norwich tomorrow. By lunchtime, we are packed and sorted, the house is clean(ish!), our cat, Ollie, has gone off on his holidays too (to the local cattery) and we are ready to go!!! I spend some time on the DISboards, reading ‘trippies’ to get me in the mood (as if I need any help).
That’s all for now folks – more to follow in about 10 days. See you all soon!!!
P.S. Thought I’d post a pic of me and my DS, who I am going to miss like mad while we’re away.
