Instead of the government making a buck on selling this stuff, why wouldn't they just give it to Habitat for Humanity or something so they can begin to rebuild NO and every where else that was destroyed!?!

Hmm .. if the government donates something to charity, who do they get a tax deduction from? ;)

Seriously, though .. I think a lot would have to depend on the condition and the likely use of the wood. Looking at the uses listed in the link -- boat building, joinery, flooring, furniture, decorative veneers, considered an excellent teak substitute -- I'm not sure it would be ideal for house framing. This looks more like raw materials that a lumber mill would turn into finished product.

Of course, when did the government last do something that made sense. :earboy2:

I agree with Matthew. I used to do a lot of work with Habitat before I moved. I got all the mail from the web site then forwarded it on to the appropriate person, so I've got a pretty good grasp n what they can and can't use, and that doesn't sound like something they can use. Now had it been 55 sheets of 5/8" plywood, yes, that's someting HFH would LOVE to have donated!

Actually, I remember hearing that customs seized some designer clothing in NY. They took it all and sent it down south. I don't remember why they seized it tho.
