Day 19 – Sunday 21st August & Summary

Me: Kev, 47.
Wife: Tam, 41.
Daughter: India, 14.
Daughter: Georgia, 11.

If you’d like to know more take a look at http://freespace.virgin.net/kevin.stringer/index.htm

Travelling home day is never much fun, so I’m not going to write much about it. We wake, pack and have the suitcases in the car by 11.00am, which is checkout time.
We eat a breakfast of pastries and coffee in the lounge in Paradise Pier before saying farewell to Susan who is catching the bus to the airport for her flight back to Tulsa.
I don’t know how she has managed to survive the ordeal, but we have really enjoyed having her along. She’s been patient with the children and even more patient with me.
Hugs and kisses all round as she boards the bus.

We then attempt, with some trepidation, to use Virgin on-line check-in again. A miracle, it works! We have our pre-booked seats.

An hour or so is now spent round the pool at Paradise Pier for a final swim and some relaxation before leaving for the airport at 2.45pm. This should be plenty of time, but the traffic on the freeway is heavy and things start to look a bit dodgy. A bit of judicious re-planning of the route and we get to baggage drop off at the Virgin desk 75 minutes before take off.

Unfortunately the security checks take over 30 minutes to get through with only one lane open. By the time we reach the gate they are already boarding and we walk straight on.
Now here’s an irony for you. India has been desperately looking for celebrities all the time we have been in L.A. especially while we were in West Hollywood. As we board the plane we walk past the bar area, sat at a stool is Eddie Izzard. We also find out that Iron Maiden are also on the flight. Typical. You wait all holiday for a celebrity and then 2 come along at once.

The rest is pretty mundane. The next people in the row in front of us decide to go for a bit of synchronised seat reclining as soon as we take off and leave them there for the rest of the flight, even during the meals. Thank you sooooo much.

So, I’m back home. I’ve had time to contemplate, but Tam told me to stop doing that, so I thought about our holiday instead.

Summary

Weather – mostly wonderful, but a few surprises. In the National Parks it was approaching 100°F during the day, but this cooled off to a liveable 65°F at night. It certainly wasn’t as oppressive as the humid Florida heat.
Actually jolly chilly at times in San Francisco and even cool in the mornings in L.A. The mist usually burnt off pretty quickly though to leave cloudless skies and perfect temperatures in the 80’s.

San Francisco – A slight disappointment. I’d read and seen so much about it that I thought it would be wonderful. Sometimes you can know too much about a place. There will still some very cool things to see and the real joy is just in seeing the steep hills and beautiful houses. Unfortunately we spent too much time traipsing up and down said hills due to the inefficient transport out of Fisherman’s Wharf.
Would I go back? Probably. It’s always unfair to judge a place by just one visit, but if you gave me the choice of returning to SF or New York City, I would choose NY.

Solvang – a lovely little place. I know many will laugh at my lack of sophistication in liking a manufactured touristy town, but I found it clean, tidy and rather welcoming. The wine tours helped as well!

Yosemite and Kings Canyon – An experience never to be forgotten. Kings Canyon is quieter and a couple of nights was enough there, but that doesn’t detract from it’s beauty and relative isolation.
Some of the things we saw in Yosemite will live with me forever. I’ve looked at the photos since we’ve been back, but they just can’t capture the sheer size of the mountains and valleys we saw. Hiking for 9 miles from Glacier Point was a real adventure. Not one I’d care to repeat every day of the week thank you very much, but unforgettable all the same. Yosemite is probably the most striking place I’ve ever been.

L.A. – Now here’s a strange thing – I didn’t start off with any great enthusiasm for LA (as opposed to SF, which I was really looking forward too), but ended up with affection for the place. Yes, it certainly is just one huge sprawling mass, but parts of it were fun to be around. Its history is fairly recent by British standards, but, boy, have they packed a lot into a short period of time. If you like films there couldn’t be a better place to visit.
Oh yes, it’s got Disneyland too.

WDW v Disneyland – Susan told me that whenever her late husband Scott (a real Disney fan) was asked to choose between the two, he would refuse saying that he liked both and found joy in both. I would like to have met Scott; he was obviously a very wise man. Why should you have to choose? And how could you compare even if you wanted to?
WDW is obviously so much larger than DL that any comparison would be silly. The only thing you might try to do would be to compare both Magic Kingdom’s. Even this is a pointless exercise. Just visit both, have fun in both and be grateful you had the opportunity.

Susan – A lady of infinite patience and calm. Oh yes – and punctual in the extreme. I’m beginning to suspect that there may have been an outside influence in her tardy timekeeping when we met last year in Florida. Possibly her travelling companion? I’m looking your way here Lu Beth. It must all have been your fault.
Susan, you can baby sit my childr ….. er…. I mean …. come on holiday with us any time you like.

Well, that’s about it. You wouldn’t call it a relaxing holiday. We drove, we walked, we walked some more and when we arrived we walked back again. However, if we hadn’t have walked all the miles we did, we wouldn’t have seen half the things we did. My feet were not grateful, but I was.

When I found the dis boards it was your last years' trip report which got me hooked! I then read all the other reports (our daughter is 12 so its great to read about you both and your girls)and have so enjoyed your latest US adventure. Great sense of humour, I just wish everyone could write, including myself as well as you.

Could we not have a Kevin Stringer thread, you could even include your fav beers and how much fun it would be own a franchise of Hooters!!!

You must be very proud of your family, they all, including the two grans sound pretty amazing.

Thank you for making the day a little more fun. dh (john), dd (12) and I are off for our big adventure in October (last time we went in '89 it was for our honeymoon, john thought it was going to be like Brighton Pier.lol!!).

Please hurry up with the photos and those views!

thanks, prue

Now what am I going to do when I get up in the morning with my cup of coffee. I think what you should do,so as not to disappoint us, is take a virtual reality holiday and write a trip report about it. It coud last until your next holiday. You know it makes sense.!!!!!!!!

Here's the public thank you to my friends, India, Georgia, Tammy and Kevin for taking me along on their adventures and to Dorothy and Julia, who allowed me to have the spot that's usually theirs. I've always had memorable times at Disney places, but this trip was wonderfully unique. Can't remember the last time I had so much fun. Can't imagine having more congenial traveling companions--great company and they have proper respect and love of Disney.

Also must say how pleased I am to have repaired my reputation in regards to getting places on time, although I don't want this newly gained respect at Lu Beth's cost. We were both desperate to get to you on time at WDW last summer--it's just that the time to span the distances between hotels and parks there seemed to get longer when we were facing SNAFUs like a slow launch and a dead car battery. Another point for the Pro column when considering a trip to Disneyland--never far from anything.

To readers of Kevin's reports--If you've thought as you've read them that some of Kevin's tales were exaggerations in order to be amusing, I can tell you he just records the truth. Things happen to the Stringers. That's one of the reasons it's so much fun to spend time with them. When you're with them things happen to you, too. I know how lucky I was to share this trip, but bet that many of you feel like you were right there with us thanks to Kevin's clever and generous writing style. I'm with a lot of you, planning to read his reports as long as he writes them.

There is just ONE more thing - I forgot to thank everbody who took the time to respond to my reports. It really is very much appreciated.

I know I'm as bad as anyone else when it comes to responding to trip reports written by other people. Daft really as I know how much it helps to know that someone out there is taking the time to read them.

If you enjoy a particular report, PLEASE reply to that thread, it encourages people so much and we need as many reports as we can get.

Thanks

Kev

About a week before you started posting this report I thought to myself, "Hmmm ... I wonder what happened to that guy who posted the really entertaining trip report last year." And then you started posting again! What am I going to do now without your reports to entertain me? I'm actually going to have to do some work while I sit at my computer. :crazy2: :faint: Do you have any idea how disheartening that is?

I'm begging you to travel again really soon!!

Kevin,

Thanks for another amazing trip report. Very informative and fun to read. The British have a great sense of humor which is why this Canadian lurker always reads the UK trip reports first. If your family ever visits Toronto, e-mail me and we will show you around our great city.

Noooooooooooooo! Another theory debunked. How do we explain all the previous bad luck? Are you telling me the Stringers aren't jinxed after all?

San Francisco – A slight disappointment. I’d read and seen so much about it that I thought it would be wonderful. Sometimes you can know too much about a place
This is so true. San Francisco is reportedly the most beautiful City in the World. Surely it's always going to be a disappointment. I had absolutely no expectations at all about Washington and I was blown away.

Solvang – a lovely little place. I know many will laugh at my lack of sophistication in liking a manufactured touristy town, but I found it clean, tidy and rather welcoming

I can't help but make a comparison with another favourite place of ours, my friend.

Yosemite is probably the most striking place I’ve ever been
You could be talking about our experience of Shenandoah/Blue Ridge Mountains

WDW v Disneyland – Susan told me that whenever her late husband Scott (a real Disney fan) was asked to choose between the two, he would refuse saying that he liked both and found joy in both. I would like to have met Scott; he was obviously a very wise man. Why should you have to choose? And how could you compare even if you wanted to?

Hallelujah to that. Even though I've never visited DCL.

You must be very proud of your family, they all, including the two grans sound pretty amazing
They are absolutely as wonderful as Kev makes them sound and I am very honoured to be able to count them amongst my friends. And I mean that most sincerely. I first met the Stringer family on my 40th birthday at a DIS meet. It probably wasn't the way I'd have expected, or chosen, to have spent my 40th birthday, but sometimes you have to believe in fate.

Friendship's a 2 way street. I feel we have a reciprocal relationship. I haven't a clue what that means, but it sounds good doesn't it?

Thanks for the kind words Deb.

I'm writing as an American who really enjoys the UK and British perspective on life. The trip reports were really fun.

As for San Francisco, which I have visited many times, I think that one thing that Americans really like about it is the weather. If you think about our major (in size & cultural importance) cities-- New York, Boston, Chicago, LA, DC, Miami, SF-- San Francisco has by far the best climate. It doesn't get too hot or cold. The other thing is because of the location & the geography, there is a lot of opportunity for water views.

Does this add up to "the most beautiful city in the world"? I don't even know what that means. You can never see a whole city, except in a postcard photo taken from a helicopter. SF has many beautiful places, but so do many other cities.

I've finally caught up with your WONDERFUL trip reports Kev and thought they were superb!!!! Of course I especially enjoyed the last 3 days when you were at DLC - amazing to think we were there those 3 days too - how on earth did we miss each other?????? Well, I'm sorry we did because you sound like a wonderful family. Our impressions of rides vary quite a bit but that's because we are wussies and don't like anything more exciting than Splash Mountain but we certainly agree about how wonderful the 2 Californian parks are and also the fireworks show and Fantasmic. We LOVED the climate too - though it has to be said we've decided to return to WDW next year!
Thank you SO much for your wonderfully dry and witty - and very British - sense of humour!!

Thank you so much for posting your fabulous reports. I just spent the afternoon reading them and perusing your pictures on your website. You make me want to run out and book a trip to California. I live in the US and sometimes I forget about the tremendous beauty we have here that you captured in your photos. Now I just need to find the time to do everything you did. Unfortunately, in America, if you take off more than a week at a time for vacation, you are considered a slacker :rolleyes2.

As others have mentioned, you really do have a great writing style and you often had me laughing out loud. Great job. :thumbsup2
