I think in many cases, they are trying to get people first and then the animals. It is sad, but imagine the outrage if another person dies because they spent time trying to coax scared and defensive dogs off roofs.

ITA, PAW. They should save the animals where they easily can, but it shouldn't interfere with or slow down in any way the rescue of people.

I know, but they went by the house and no one was there, and they left the dog. He wasn't on the roof, was on the porch.

ASPCA, HSUS, Noah's Wish, EARS, the various local animal control people, and Best Friends are all sanctioned by the authorities and are in the zone dealing with the animals.

Ducklite, and even ME have posted on this topic.
Today on WGN Morning News "Kurt" the cyber guy was in New Orleans at a convention... he talked of his friend whose home was destroyed, but has a boat and is picking up stray dogs and cats, and delivering them to a shelter 17 miles away, all on his own. LSU has a vet school and is taking many many pets,
www.noahswish.org is one organization, ducklite mentioned many more...
www.petfinder.org has a Katrina hurricane, and I posted what is being done, and it has a huge page of agencies working on it from all across the country. Petfinder also has a message board for posts on missing, and adopting these animals.
Today's paper showed 2 mules roaming streets, they used to pull carriages, and yes there is an equian rescue group!!

Just a thought, because I don't know why they would leave them behind, but my guess would be if they are out on a rescue mission to save people, if they collected dogs that would take up room and take away from space for people. Also, I think it would be better left to someone who is trained to handle animals to rescue them. These animals have been left alone for a week, and they are probably hungry and who knows what their behavior will be like.
