My son asked me this and I'm not sure. I had heard a report of looters at one time but could it be the leaking of natural gas causing them?

I saw a report saying that some are believed to be arson. I also saw a military guy talking about broken gas lines. I would imagine that it is some of both.

The one in the garden district was caused by a candle that got knocked over.

I believe some of the fires have been set but not sure of how many. Other fires may be unintentional like the case involving the candle. Also it may appear that the firefighters are not doing anything to extinguish them, this is far from the truth.
Most of the water mains were probably destroyed in the floods and most of the pumping stations assist in getting water in the mains. Most people will also say, why don't they use the flood water to put out the fires?
Well to use that water the firefighters are taking the chance of damaging the pump in the engine. With all that may be in the water anything going into the pump has a very good chance that it would cause the pump to shutdown.
While watching the world news tonight I did see them using water drops like they would do a brushfires this is the most effective way to extinguish fires like they are experiencing down there.
I ask of all of you to say a prayer for all my brother and sister firefighters who have been working from day one many not knowing where their families are or what if any home they have left.
And let us not forget the N.O.P.D. for their efforts as well and all emergency workers enroute to help.

I will definetly be keeping all the fire fighters in my thoughts and prayers. How hard it would be to fight fires without the usual equipment.

I had first thought gas the other day; & DH pointed out it could be candles.
And then, my insurance agent mind went: OH, I'm covered for fire, but not flood. Hmmmmmm.
He laughed & said: Oh, Mr rescuer, could you wait a second while I light this match.
It makes you wonder though......????
We were discussing today how policies will respond to these claims....when the INITIAL cause of loss was Hurricane / wind damage.

I heard a report today that at least 2 of the fires were confirmed to be arson.

I heard many were arson as they did not have flood insurance.
