My DS6 wants to send a bunch of his books to the "hurricane kids". Although I have tried to shield him from some of the worst on TV, radio and in the photos in the newspaper, he has seen and heard enough to understand that a LOT of kids have lost their homes and all their toys and everything else. He is already collecting teddy bears to send to them (We have always collected bears at his birthday party to send to Operation TeddyCare - so that is something he understands). Now he wants to send books and I can't figure out where to send them. I suspect that the Houston shelters like the Astrodome are already receiving tons of stuff and are probably having trouble coping with it all. I would like to find either an organization that specializes in getting books to kids or a shelter that hasn't received much publicity that can really use them. Any suggestions? DISers always seem to come through and someone always seems to have an idea! :)

I've searched the web again and still can't find anything clear on anyone who is collecting books for kids. I have also called my local library and they are also trying to research this (my call wasn't the first!)

Any ideas out there?
