Here's a story about those incredible rooftop rescues, and the tremendously tireless and compassionate men and women who are flying those machines . . .

My nephew flies Dauphin helicopters for the Coast Guard out of Mobile, AL. He and his crew worked tirelessly to rescue as many people as they could. On the day my sister was finally able to speak to him he said they had plucked 126 people off of rooftops so far that day. I'm so proud of him and all of the hard working men and women of the Coast Guard and all other branches of the US Military. :grouphug:

The rescues have been amazing. I tragically read that many poor residents feared accepting the rescue because they feared they would be billed for it and could not pay. Great work though

I am so in awe of how skillfully the pilots were able to hold their choppers still while the rescuers were working to get the victims down below. That, and their perfect flying record in the midst of hundreds of aircraft in a very crowded airspace is truly an incredible feat.

Kudos to those flyers!!!

My DH is retired Coast Guard and we are so proud of all of the men and women.

Don't forget that almost all boat stations and the ISC New Orleans were destroyed or flooded during Katrina as well as leaving many active duty Coastie families in the area homeless. Donations are being accepted through the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Fund for these families ~ http://www.cgmahq.org/ ~ you can also get to it through www.uscg.mil.
