I just heard our Governor Mitt Romney announce that 2,500 people will be coming to Otis Air Force Base, probably for several months. He is asking for volunteers to help in one week shifts. They can help with meal preparation, child care, cleaning, and many other various ways, even animal care! I am considering doing this. Is your home state doing something similar?

No! I wish we were. I know that our town was asked to house 25 families, but that will be in apartments around the city.
I would love to help out with something like this; we are not able to contribute as much financially as I would like to.
Of course, for us to help house people, we gotta get some people willing to come to Iowa :flower:

If we can get people in MN you can get them to go to Iowa :teeth:

And yo can help look around and she what you can live without. They will need everything.

Governor Romney should have phone banks that don't charge operator assisted rates installed at the base so the evacuees can take care of personal business. Volunteers can be on hand to make the phone calls, or if there are not enough volunteers, the evacuees can dial the calls themselves.

Howq many evacuees can help with food preparation, child care, etc.?

I know of some apartments in the downtonw Boston area that are empty awaiting rehab. They have working heat, hot water, door locks, emergency egress, limited electricity amperage. They are laden with lead paint. If Governor Romney could exempt these apartments from zoning and discrimination (against children) and code requirements, some evacuees could be housed.

Is your home state doing something similar?I'm sure many, many states are opening shelters and taking people in.

Florida currently has 21 shelters open. Most of them are along the I-10 corridor across the north tier of Florida, but there are others scattered as far south as Ft. Lauderdale.
