I have been watching these food drops. How are these packaged? They have been dropping these bottles of water and boxes of food into these sewage filled waters. Is the food and water still unaffected?

Whats an MRE made up of?

Bottled water and MREs are sealed.

They started doing food drops?? I think there were about 2 threads wondering why they weren't doing them a few days ago.

They are in different spots. I have stopped watching the news--but in the past day or so...they were happing in other parts of the New Orleans..just not downtown. Don't know how often or where specifically.

Perhaps the dis board should organize the next DISaster team--I swear I have heard so many good ideas here....

I've been watching them on TV. It looks like they are dropping them to people that are in their homes and can wade out to pick them up. These are people that aren't on the roof, but still in deep water. My guess is that that they are giving them food and water to hold over until they get the people off top of the houses.

Pretty scary when normal every day people can figure things out long before the people who are PAID to do so, isn't it?

Yes the water is in packages, but when they are being dropped they packages are opening and the water bottles are going everywhere. Who knows how contaminated those plastic bottles are getting while they are floating in the water. I'm not talking about the water inside, but the bottle it's self.

Yep thats what I mean...I dont think the bottle itself is sealed in plastic. So that would mean the outside would be contaminated including the cap.

They can wipe the bottles near the opening off as much as possible, but the bottles would be contaminated anyway due to the people getting their hands in the water while retrieving the water.

They're still better than no water at all.

According to my dh who is the absolute expert on MREs and can tell you which are the best they include: an entree, accessory packet (plastic ware, condiments, napkins, powerded drink,) some little side things like peanut butter&crackers or brownie or something else. Most MREs have at least 2,000 calories and actually one MRE can sustain you for one day. The only draw back is that of course they are loaded with salt, which could hurt some people's health.

I haven't watched an awful lot today - had some real estate business that had to be attended to - but when I watched last night, they were being dropped in the "dry" areas.. Are they dropping them in other flooded areas outside of the Superdome and Interstate now?

The "drops" I saw were not dropped into water.

Do the packages bust open when they land?

If not--then if it landed in water and then was removed....it could be open and the package inside not be contaminated.

No more than it is with people who haven't been cleaned in days opening them up.

I wouldn't think they would do a drop that would pose more of a health risk from contamination--so if they drop it in the water....then it might be okay :confused3 .

C.Ann,

Yep. If they see anyone they are dropping stuff to them, calling in letting know where they are at, so a rescue boat or chopper can come get them later.
