My friend (Lil_tink) and I want to start a fundraiser in our school by giving our teachers some donation boxes, and having them ask students for donations. Is this a good idea? Do you think it will work? And most of all, which company/donator/thing should we send our money to?

UMCOR is one organization you might want to look into. They have kits that you can make up to donate. Go to the web site and look at the list of kits.

Might I suggest one large container, like a water jug, that you can put in a secure location, like the main office.

Print up flyers urging everyone to bring their spare change in to put in the bottle.

Or have a special sale, like a bake sale or a pretzel sale and advertise that.

There are lots of places to donate the money to. Keep your eye out for lists.

It's nice that you want to help.

my DDs school sent home a letter yesterday that they are taking up a collection for the Red Cross. They are asking that each child bring their money in a sealed envelope with their name, their teachers name and Red Cross on the outside of the envelope. The class that raises the most money will have a pizza party.

You might also consider selling something small like a black ribbon with a safety pin or a paper braclet for a dollar and sending that money to the red cross. If you don't like the red cross, there are lots of posts about other organizations raising money you can run a search for. I would send money at this point unless you know a family and exactly what they can use. You don't want to clog the system sending things they don't need at this point.
