I'm watching Fox News and Shep Smith is saying there are still hundreds of people clustered on the bridges and highway (I 10??) who have no water or food while dozens of supply trucks drive by.
Geraldo is saying the same thing.
Unbelievable! Is FEMA unaware of this situation just like they were the Convention Center???

I hope that gets coverage too...I know people hate all the complaining.....
On a deserted island you have fire to send a signal.
In New Orleans--the media has your back!
Amazing how they can get around.

Don't faint...I watch Fox News now and then and I've especially been watching it since the hurricane.
Shep Smith has become my new hero. I think he's had an eye opening experience here and fights like hell for those who have no power to get anything done.
You should have seen the piece they were doing. There are babies there hungry and thirsty and the NG will not let them leave! I thought Shep was going to have a stroke and Geraldo..well, I'm still not too sure about him but he was actually crying. I think these reporters have seen too much.
I guess now that Bush has left, they're back to the same old, same old.

I saw the Fox News with Shep Smith and I can't belive what they said about national guard not allowing people to leave the city! I can not understand WHY?! :sad2: :sad1:

I saw this as well. I'm beyond outraged at this point. I just don't understand. If airdrops can be made in third world countries, then by ***, why can't it be done here? There is simply no reason why these poor people have been without food and water for days now!

If the cargo is "dropped" into water it is useless.

I saw this too. I'm stunned and saddened. But what I would like to know is since it seems pretty easy for the media (not just Fox) to get in AND out, why can't they people get out, why can't the help get in and why can't the media help take at least some of these people out?

It's not flooded where they are. It's on a freeway with supply trucks driving by. They don't need an airdrop...just slow the truck down and kick a few cases of water off the side for God's sake.

The National Guard will not let them leave...why is beyond me, but I guess it's security issues.

Then the food and water should be given to the number of media reps that have no trouble getting access to this area.

Thanks, peachgirl. That was exactly what I was thinking. Rescue people are driving by those stranded on I10. It's not like they don't know people are there now.

I don't understand it either. I'm furious. I've heard so many stories of babies, BABIES FOR GODS SAKE, dying...why?? Because they are dehydrated. This is not a flippin 3rd world country. We have bottled water. I have tons of it in my pantry. Tell me where to send it and I will. I'll go buy out the entire stocks of Poland Springs from my local grocery store and send it.
If I can figure this out, why can't anyone in an official position who actually has the means to get food to these people so babies and grandmothers don't have to die anymore from a lack of a BASIC HUMAN NEED.

Exactly! ::yes:: Earlier I heard the excuse for lack of supplies, National Guard presence, etc. was because the communication grid failed after the storm passed thru. This was reported tonight on Fox News. Baton Rouge still had power, though. I just can't believe that there wasn't someone somewhere on some government official's staff that didn't have access to a television set. :confused3

It's got me too - there really seems to be a bit of a mess-up going on with regards to those people. Perhaps there are so few of them by comparison with those still in the Dome that they aren;t worrying about them so much? It's all very confusing.

Just for the record Nestle a parent company of Poland Spring donated thousands of bottles of water to huricane victims

I know exactly how you feel.
Watching that woman on television, shaking her baby and crying hysterically because she couldn't get him to wake up (he was dead from dehydration) is a sight I will never forget.
It is so frustrating to know that any of us could have saved that child that it sickens me.
I had hoped that after the President made his visit and was made fully aware of how dire the situation was, heaven and earth would be moved to help these people. I was wrong.

So true. Did anyone see Anderson Cooper tear Senator Landrieu a new one when she was pontificating about the aid package Congress had just passed? She was saying, "Well, Anderson, I don't know if you're aware, but we just passed this aid package blah blah," and Coop was like, uh, I guess I was too busy noticing the corpses floating by and being devoured by rats to be impressed by your Senate vote. (I'm paraphrasing here.)
CNN actually dispatched their best war correspondents today... Nic Robertson, who usually bounces around in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, is now in New Orleans.

Shep Smith has become my new hero. I think he's had an eye opening experience here and fights like hell for those who have no power to get anything done. Me too. The poor guy looks like he has aged 10 years in the past two days. You can hear the emotion in his voice. He's no talking head behind a desk that's for sure. I think it's more than just a news story to him now. Maybe they need to put him in charge of the rescue effort, he seems to have more info than those in charge. :sad2:
Can't believe trucks keep driving right by these people and not stopping to help. He is FURIOUS! He did say that a bridge nearby that had 5,000 people waiting be rescued is now down to 500 people, but no one has been by to get this rest since yesterday. :confused3

:sad1: This whole situation is so horrible. It really is an eye opener to think that this is the most powerful nation on the planet and 5 days later we can't get food and water to people in the biggest city in Louisiana. It isn't as if they are on a different continent...how can this be? :confused3

After watching the same thing with Shep this evening. I was wondering if the reason people were not allowed to "leave" was due to night having fallen and I assume a lockdown being imposed. Meaning the NG wasn't just going to let people wander around thus creating more possible chaos.

I thought the same thing. I also thought that it might have been b/c they didn't want these refugees breaking into people's homes and such...

I know everyone is frustrated and just wants everyone to get food and water and get transported out of there now. However don't forget that almost a whole day was wasted yesterday when help came to get them out and some decided to shoot at them. At that point they had to wait until the area was more secure do try again.

This is the question we are all asking while we have people saying we have no right to be asking the question.
I'm still wondering why fire engines from LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA arrived at the same time as everything else....for all the talk about logistics, to me that is beyond comprehension. They traveled 1900 MILES and arrived at the same time... :confused3

Oh goodness, no no :( - is this the woman I am thinking of - did the news show her twice, being interviewed two days apart? She kept screaming they needed help and she can't wake her son up? She was holding him with his head leaning on her shoulder. The boy had wavy light brown hair. Is this the same mother and baby you are referring to? The baby was dead??? Did the news say that the baby died?? Oh god .........
Saying prayers for all. :( :(

If this is the same woman , and I believe it is, I saw a few hours ago an interview with her, and the baby did not die. She and her baby both have gotten minimal food and water, but she was still out on the streets, not in a shelter or anything.

You can definitely feel the level of desperation growing. Almost every newscast I have watched tonight the reporters are more emotional than I have ever seen. I just can't believe that no one who has any type of authority is aware of these pockets of people.

Just remember - this is the same government that will "protect" us, "care for us" and "keep us out of harms way" (I HATE THAT FRICKIN "HARMS WAY" PHRASE) should we fall victim to a massive terrorist attack..
Be prepared to care for your own.. I'll be out looting stores to get food and water and if anyone feels I should be shot for "stealing" - well - feel free to load up the guns..
My faith in the ability of this country to care for it's citizens in their darkest hour has been totally shattered.. People have been left to die and there is not an excuse in the world that can justify those actions..
I have never seen anything so utterly disgusting in my entire life!! If I were one of those victims down there and the President approached me during his photo op with his patronizing lip service, I would have slapped him so hard he would have landed all the way back in Washington.. He should SHUT HIS MOUTH and stop making promises that aren't being kept.. Maybe he could roll up his sleeves and drag some dead bodies around.. How about holding a baby in his arms while it gasps for it's last breath?
You know the old saying, "Lead, follow or get the heck out of the way!!" He's a disgrace to this country and has failed miserably at this job.. I hope he can sleep at night - I know many, many people who currently can't..

Aloha! I agree C.ANN and....
THIS IS THE WEALTHIEST AND MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD...We have a GREAT NATION! We ABSOLUTELY have the capability to care for our citizens in times such as these...But to get the job done requires THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES to CHOOSE to devote all of the resources at his command to do so.
I'm sorry if you think this is only Bush Bashing...Frankly, too many Americans are dying terrible deaths even now for me to waste my time on such silly conversations...
For the last time, I will shout loudly and clearly...THIS PRESIDENT HAS MADE A CHOICE to ignore the pain and suffering of these victims. People are DYING within a few miles of those relief trucks. What help has come is TOO LITTLE and TOO LATE! A true leader would have commandeered and mobilized this nation's resources IMMEDIATELY! Other Presidents have done it in the past. Even NIXON mobilized the Third Infantry when needed! Media reports began to come out shortly after landfall that conditions everywhere were worsening.
I would voice this dissatisfaction regardless of WHICH POLITICAL PARTY was in the WH now! This is NOT about politics...It is about incompetence and criminal (YES, CRIMINAL) negligience. Those who keep protecting this PRESIDENT and shielding him from ALL ACCOUNTABILITY are misinformed and misled. Stop using the excuses of "Well, how was he supposed to know...(about bad intelligience, about PDBs that say 'OSAMA INTENT ON STRIKING AMERICA', about where Katrina would hit, how bad the damage was, who needed what...) HE IS SUPPOSED TO KNOW BECAUSE HE IS THE PRESIDENT! A CAT 5 was headed for NO and he didn't demand ongoing briefings so he could mobilize resources immmediately if needed????? Are you REALLY SATISFIED with that level of disengagement? Do you REALLY expect so little from your PRESIDENT?
We can all go back and examine or debate the poor planning on the part of the local and state officials in a few weeks...and hold them accountable for that as needed. But the failure of RESPONSE lies with the President!
Stop comparing this to 9-11. As horrid as that was (and my county suffered the highest number of losses) it was several building and blocks. Everything around it (and the city's infrastructure itself) was basically intact so LOCAL officials could maintain control and operation.
The bottom line is if my city or state (or yours) were overwhelmed and could not protect our families REGARDLESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES, it is ABSOLUTELY the responsibility of the FEDERAL GOV'T to take all necessary steps to do so.
The shameless photo-op today was an insult to every American, but particularly every victim. The surprise the Pres expressed after his fly-over that the region looked like it had been destroyed by a 'large weapon' was chilling..first in its naivete and second in its offering as new info...I know he was on vacation, but doesn't anyone in the administration watch TV?
LBJ said after Walter Cronkite editorialized on his news show against the Vietnam War "If I've lost Walter, I've lost the average American" (in their support of the war). Well, EVERY newscaster on the ground from CNN to FOX has been begging for days for the FEDS to do SOMETHING IMMEDIATELY and tonite I watched Shep Smith and Geraldo (ON FOX NEWS!!!!!) crying as people..BABIES..were fading in front of them. The roads are passable...the trucks are there...the locations have been known for days...news crews are able to get in and out. And this PRESIDENT (or his handlers) should have made sure help reached those people at least by today while he was hugging and 'feeling the pain' (if for no OTHER reason than he is committing political suicide!)
God help us all if a major attack comes to our shores (again)!
