As you may know, DH is full time & part time Army National Guard - specializing in communications & computers at MA State Headquarters. He has training in 1 of the 12 units in the country that can set up a communications system in areas with nothing - no power...... Obviously, they are needed right now.
We just got the call after waiting to hear for the last 4 hours. Cancelled all our plans for the holiday weekend. And he'll be leaving on Tuesday. :guilty:
I'm scared of the shooting & the diseases....but in my mind (somewhere) I know he'll be safe. And I know they'll be appreciated.
I'll miss him. I never handle these things well.

I was just thinking of you today and wondering if the local unit would be going. Please thank him for all of us and tell him that we appreciate that there are those like him around to help when it is needed. You take care of yourself, too!

UPDATE: DH has been there all day packing. Called to say they would actually be leaving Sunday from the Cape & flying down.
Then he called again a while ago to say they are NOT being sent now. :confused3 I have NO IDEA why!! They are a communications unit. I would think they would still be needed.
More info when he gets home later.

Please do let us know how this works out.
I know my Nephew in New Mexico thought he was going (before the storm made land fall New Mexico offered to send her Gauard units) but there was a SNAFU. I think the Feds have to approve Gaurd units crossing into other states.

UPDATE: He's home. There are 450 troops from MA still going - but other specialties (like infantry & MPs.....). The General decided to keep DH's group home. He is in communications & computers. They work with ISISCS. There are only 12 of these in the US. The one from PA is already down there helping. The 2 in NY aren't up & running. (??) So, the General decided we needed to keep the MA unit in the region.
I found this on the PA guard website which explains what ISISCS is. It really sounds like they could be used in the Katrina aftermath. Perhaps they'll take one from another region. ??? I just hope they get the help they need down there!!!! My understanding is they only moved 2 of these units to the area so far.
".... the Interim Satellite Incident Site Communications Set (ISISCS) ....... a total of 12 National Guard states/territories nationwide. This equipment, housed in a self-contained, towable trailer, can be deployed anywhere in the U.S. in support of domestic or reaction force missions. The ISISCS can be set up and operational within one hour of its arrival on site. With the implementation of this equipment, commanders now have the ability to communicate from the unit on the ground through all command channels/levels all the way to U.S. Army Forces Command. This communications set includes: radios, computers, satellites, secure/non-secure voice capabilities, video teleconferencing, electronic mail and wireless transmission capability to complete first responder missions. The ISISCS has the ability to cross-level communications requirements in order to communicate with the governor, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the state Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Defense, state National Guard units, state agencies and local police, fire companies and rescue teams throughout the commonwealth. The enhanced capability of the National Guard to respond immediately to homeland defense and security missions is evident with the interoperability capabilities of this equipment. "

I, for one, am glad he's going - My Home was partially destroyed by Katrina (Ocean Springs, MS - 5 mi. from Biloxi) and my Dh, who's AD Navy has been working all day (every day) at the Naval base in pascagoula unloading boxes of supplies from incoming helicopters(Food, water, medicine, etc.) that needs to be distributed throughout gulfcoast MS. There are ONLY 11 other Navy guys at the base because the rest of the AD Military in the area have lost their homes and their cars, and are basically in survival mode (taking care of their families (as they should)). The guys down there could use some help.......I'm sure it's the same where ever the Hurricane hit
I know you'll miss him ----- I know I do (My Husband, not yours:teeth: )and my 5 yo son surely misses his Daddy too - but we can't go Home until our house is safe - (we're staying at My Sisters in VA)-

Sorry, I meant it as in... they should make up their minds & get them down there already!!! I didn't mean for it to sound like I was complaining about the packing.
Sorry to hear of your damage & your DH being away. And glad to hear you are all safe. I hope they get some relief soon where he's at so he can have a well deserved break.
