Thank you all (and yes, I do mean all :goodvibes) for being such an overall positive part of my day-to-day life for so many years here. Coming along the DIS back in early '99, while researching a family Disney trip for later that year, was a truly a treasure trove in the long run, all of you folks.
At times like this, another national disaster (and we have been through a few), and the fun times too, the folks on the DIS....all from so many varied walks of life, locales literally around the world, political leanings, attitudes on life, ages, family situations, etc....have been such a wonderful group to be part of, to be associated with. Yeah, sounds a little (maybe a lot) sappy, but sometimes (some may say often :p :)) I get that way, sappy. For those around here for a time, you probably know that, LOL.
This past week, with the Katrina disaster, and back almost 4 years ago, on 9/11, the folks here on the DIS really became a real solid family. We're family all the time here, but like real life families, sort of drift along, loosely, sometimes oblivious to one another. In times of crisis though, families tend to bunch up, circle the wagons, talk a lot, argue along the way, all in the spirit really of one thing, comfort of one another.
Whether we have been trying to get in touch with our DIS family in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, or a few days earlier, in Florida, DIS family in New York and Washington DC back during 9/11, or during all the intermediate storms, tornadoes, fires, crashes or whatever, we are truly concerned. When everybody is accounted for, we breathe a sigh a relief, give a hug.
I have found myself agreeing with some of our DIS family here these past few days, either silently to myself or on the board, whom I tend to normally read past during a 'normal' week. I know there are some who don't particularly find me to be 'good egg' normally, and there are a few whom I find not to be 'good eggs' normally, like family. But, we all have pretty much the same basic ideas though in times of need and strife, make it good for our fellow people, care, concern. That's it, we all really want the same thing. Sure, some differences as how to go about it, who should do it , and all of that, but let's face it, we are all in this together, family. And that is good.
So, thanks again for being friends, family. And no pictures here, no music or sound, just thanks. :goodvibes Have a good weekend, and for those here in the States and Canada (not sure about elsewhere), enjoy the Labor Day holiday. I'll be in Indianapolis for the National Drag races over the weekend, a DIS meet in Indy tomorrow night (hope I have gas to get back home). Hug your kids, your hubbies, your wives, your partners, your significant others, your parents, brothers and sisters, dogs, kitties, horses, fish, birds, family (who did I leave out, need to be PC here :)) Again, yes, I know, sappy.
To repeat, thanks, all. :goodvibes

Great post Dan. More and more of us are shifting from "gathering around the TV" in moments of great crisis to logging on to join our online communities to get through the hard times.

Couldn't agree with you more Dan. With all that is going on I just put the posts that are "snarky" to someone feeling the stress and not handling it well at the moment. Were all doing that and should give everyone a second, third or however many chances that they need. I know i'm having a heck of a time putting things into words. Nothing I write seems to be exactly what I want to say.

It's a little difficult to "enjoy" a holiday weekend right now.. Never thought I would live to see a disaster in this country that would surpass 9/11, but here it is..
Hope everyone else has a nice weekend though..

You are truly the "Dad" of the Dis Boards. Everyone loves you and respects you in ways you probably don't know. You have helped so many people with technology advice (like me :) ), words of wisdom, great advice, and just kind words when they are needed. See, this is everything a good dad does ;)
I hope you have a good weekend down in Indy and I hope the Dis Meet is a lot of fun. I'm still bummed out that I can't go!! :guilty: Please let us know how the Dis Meet was and stay safe!!

Dan, I know I'm probably one of those you think of as a "bad egg", and you know that we've had our DISagreements over the years, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciated this post and the sentiment behind it. This place has really come to mean something to a lot of us, silly as that may seem to an "outsider" or to someone new to this board. We've all made friends, and yeah, even a few "enemies", but in the end, we're all fairly united in our support of one another.
Just this week, I've had another perfect example of that togetherness. When the hurricane hit, I was concerned about a part of the area that I am very familiar with, from having attended tech school there. I posted a query as to how the area had fared, and the one person that had the info - and gave it freely, including e-mailing me pictures of the devastation offline - just happened to be one of the people that I have fought with more than just about anybody on here. She has been around about as long as I have, and I think you could probably count the times we've agreed on something on one hand...lol. But in times of need, DIS'ers rally together, even when they ordinarily don't agree on much.
So allow me, at least for a minute, to be just as sappy as all of you guys, my "online" family. :teeth: I may be the black sheep of this family because of my political leanings and tendancies, but I still love this place and all the people - yeah, even those I ordinarily don't have much good to say about ;) - that make it the fairly unique, fun, sad, interesting, and wonderfull place that it is !
