I have 2 contacts down in the south and they keep repeating 'Please Send Plus Sized Clothing!'. They have many many women that are size 22-38 and they are the hardest to find clothing for. If you can pick up a package of the largest sized undies and send them down, they will be more than appreciated. Also large sized bras are helpful. It will be like Xmas.
Here are 2 addresses I have for people who are living in cities where there are thousands of refugees. They are accepting direct donations and distributing them....
This lady is having everything sent to her work address, as they have given her a huge room to fill and distribute from..

Acadiana Neurology, APMC
Attn Melanie Delafosse
430 South Court Street
Opelousas, Louisiana 70570

This lady is living near several over filled motels and other centers that have thousands overflowing... She is distributing to refugees that have set up temp. space in Alexandria, LA.

Colfax La 71417

I never would have thought about the underwear situation. For all the ugliness/arguing that happens sometimes on the Dis there are also the threads that give perspective. I will send out ASAP.

Thanks for the info!!

Thanks for the info. This is what I need --how I can help, exactly what, and where to send it. Consider it done!

I have stuff going out tomorrow and next week. My kitchen now has 7 bags from people that I have to go through to make sure it is acceptable. I have other addresses from people here re. donations. I will spread the word and send it on down. On another question. I have a brand new mattress and box spring sitting in my garage. We have 5 kids and someone we now gave it to us this past weekend thinking we could use it. Any ideas??? It is in plastic and seems like such a waste. Should I UPS this to one of the addresses? What do you all think? Thanks for the advice.

Thank you everyone! Also, undies in all sizes - men/women/children - are probably helpful.
I am sitting here in tears again. I am the kind of person who needs to donate DIRECTLY to people, and just am not comfortable giving stuff to the Sally Ann and not sure wher it is going to end up. With the tsnaumi we had a situation up here where a thrift shop was taking donations they were going to send, and they 'never got around to it' and ended up selling it in their thrift shop instead. I was soooooooo livid!!

Wow thats a great idea....maybe UPS it to the lady who is taking things at work and has that extra space to store stuff for distribution.

local dept stores (Leggs Hanes Bali all make ladies undergarments)?

Maybe they could check w/ the mgrs and see if they have items to pass along.

I am sure that the stores could pass along packages that may have gotten a whole in it and can't sell it.

I have had a few pm's wanting to make sure I know these will get to those in need. I can personally vouch for these people that they are honest and have hearts of gold. Feel completely safe when sending to them, they will get to those in need.

I have plenty of clothes to send but I have a question and please be honest with me. Would it tacky of me to go to our thrift store and buy some things? They always have a 50% off sale on holidays. Again if you think its tacky please say so.

I don't think it is tacky. It's not any different from sending our used clothing. I'm thinking they will be grateful for it :goodvibes

kejoda, I do not think it is tacky at all! As long as the materials are in good, clean condition, it should be fine.

As far as the credibility of the people are you showing addresses for here, I was going to ask as well. How are these people going to distribute these items? I am all set to get my school (I am a fifth grade teacher) involved in a project to help the victims and want to have specifics ASAP!

Thanks!

thanks all. I guess that just proved I'm not thinking clearly.

I don't think anyone is thinking too clearly these days :goodvibes It's a good idea, I am going to go check mine out tomorrow to see if they have any of the larger sizes that might be harder to come by.

I am sending off our parcel in a few minutes. I asked on another board what they thought of this, and 100% agreed it was fine....
I included about 12 pairs of my daughters undies that she has outgrown. They are all in perfect/spotless condition. I bet she only ever wore them 1-2 times each before they were outgrown. They were bikini style and she didn't like the way they fit. They are freshly bleached/washed and I hated to see them hit the garbage can, so I put them in the package.
Many of these people lived in poverty prior to this, so they are used to having 2nd hand items. It is quite possible some of the things we are sending (my parcel is full of gap and gymboree, childrens place, etc...) are nicer than anything they owned in the first place.
Don't hesitate to send 'good' used items (like don't send grannie's old grey undies! LOL).

Funny story...I just went to the post office and it was 3:58pm and the mail goes out at 4pm. The truck was just about to leave. When they saw I had stuff for LA they ran outside and made him wait!!!! She threw it in the truck and its on its way! Phew! Just made it!

Just got 8 bra's at Walmart in various 40-44 sizes as well as numerous packs of underwear in all xxlarge sizes for females, men and kids.

I'll split the load and send half to each address you listed. The woman at Walmart was asking me why I got all different sizes and if I realized that I must be getting wrong sizes, and I told her what it was for and she was saying what a great idea it was, so good job lollipop's mom for giving us a place to send things to.

My best friend and I also went to Walmart and got bra's/undies. We also went to the thrift store and were able to find some pants in 28/30. We are going to split them between the 2 addresses and send them out tomorrow.

What about over sized underwear for men? I have some 3x undershirts and size 48 underpants I could send (obviously, I have a super sized husband who's willing to donate his undies!)

I have clothes in sizes 22 and 24 (I've lost weight) that I can send off.

Will the packages reach there okay? Are things getting through?

Thanks

Just letting you know my mom and I picked up 3 packs of the largest undies and my mom bought 2 bras in the biggest size. She will be sending them on Tuesday. I know it isn't much but it will help. And I picked out the bras in a light lavender. Because, well purple reminds me of NO ;) and they were pretty.

I have a friend who volunteered Friday at the Atrsodome. She is a nurse. She said several women came up to her asking about feminine hygeine products. It seems they are also in short supply and it is something, I think, most women aren't going to make a big deal about, know what I mean?

I was at the George R Brown today donating my plus size clothes and believe me, the evacuees do appreciate it.

I was talking about this with one of my sisters today & wishing we had a contact for direct donations of clothes. Another one of my sisters passed away 2 days after Christmas & she has so much clothes. Lots of jeans, tops, & a real lot of good, good quality work clothes-business suits w/skirts, etc. I have boxes & boxes of clothes in 3 rooms of my house & we just haven't had the heart to do anything with it. We have gone through it & unboxed it, boxed it back up but just can't seem to make the decision to give it away or put it away or what. We have all taken a few of her favorite robes, coats & things to keep but there is so much. She had a job where she had to dress very nice for the office but liked comfy jeans & things for home & was a clothes horse! We were saying today that we know people could really use some of the casual clothes & they are plus sizes & it is harder to find plus size clothes that are decent and that if we just knew where to send some of the clothes we know she would really like that. She was always helping people out in trouble & would definitely wanted to help out in this time of need. We will start separating between shorts, jeans, etc. tomorrow now that I have a contact to send stuff to.

I know this is a long post but thank you, thank you so much for posting this info. & confirming that it is a valid contact. It will give us the push we need to start working on her things. Just haven't had what it takes to do this except for her papers & things that had to be done for 8 months now & this will get us started. I have all her belongings all over my house & my other siblings keep saying we need to get it all straightened out but just haven't had the heart to do it. This will put us in the right place to start as it will be helping others. Thanks again.

I understand from another post there is a need for feminine hygiene products. Would it be helpful if I packed some in with the women's underwear? Also, I know you asked for women's large sized underwear, and men's would also be appreciated. What about children's underwear? I'm going through my daughter's clothes now and she has a lot of underwear she's outgrown (she's 8 years old). They're still in good condition.........

I just heard from a reporter at one of Baton Rouge shelters that volunteers said they need children's books, they only have a very few.

I know it's early, but I know alot people would probably be grateful on hearing what supplies they can send, if they don't have the money to spare.

I think it would also be great if the USPS would offer free postage for packages going to hurricane relief. -- I'm sure there are people who want to help, but just can't $$$ wise, but have things like books and clothing, ect......that they could send.

Don't send used (even if it's clean) underwear. It will go in the trash. They can't pass that out. What they need are new packages of underwear. They had a Red Cross official on the TV last night emphasizing that point.

People are only trying to help here. You could've just said that you heard a RC official saying to send new packages of underwear because they cannot hand out used
(all be it, clean) underwear.
