I got an email today from Petco saying that they are taking donations for the Petco Foundation on their website and through 9/11 they are asking people shopping in their stores to round up their totals and donate the change for the animal's disaster relief as well.
It's all just so sad and overwhelming, but every little bit helps.

Does anyone know which of these would be the best to donate money to? I'm just a college student so I'm only going to donate like $25, but I'm going to encourage my family and friends to do the same and would like to know which one to recommend.
I am a huge animal lover and it breaks my heart to think of them left alone. People can fend for themselves, but animals are helpless. :(

I used the link above and made a donation to the Humane Society's special fund. Every little bit helps, so don't feel that your $25 is too small. You can make your donation online via credit card or mail a check to the address listed on the donation page. :paw:

No doubt it will. Giving is a voluntary thing, and it's great to see people doing it, whatever the cause.
Not to jump you, but just once I'd like to have a thread about caring for the welfare of animals, without someone coming on expressly to lecture people about how THEY should spend THEIR money. Fact of the matter is, some will give just to people. Some will give just to animals. Some will give to both. Some won't give anything to anybody (be sure to get after them, while you are at it). They no doubt have thought-out, personal reasons for their choices. This doesn't make those choices anyone else's business.
Also please don't assume people on here aren't giving to people, too. There is just less need to start a thread asking how to do that, seeing as that information is more easily found.
Many many animals will die because of lack of funds, interest and awareness. No need for you to discourage anyone from contributing to the small amount that will get allocated--don't worry, I'm sure it won't be that much.
Caring for animals does not mean NOT caring for people!!!

I just saw the sweetest picture in a slideshow on Yahoo. A man rescued a small dog in the flood and was carrying it in a plastic container as the container floated on the flood. I also saw a nice photo of a man who rescued a pelican from some rubble and released it back to the ocean. Yesterday, I stumble across a picture a little girl who rescued a stray puppy. While many of the photos in the slideshow are horrific, these ones really struck me as a bright spot in a time of so much darkness.

Trust me, the bulk of relief DOES go to humans. The animal rescue orgs operate on a shoestring, mostly with volunteers, many of who pay for their own gas, gear, and bring lots of supplies paid for out of their pocket. The donations to animal charities amount to probably a penny on every ten dollars donated to people charities. Additionally there is a lot of government money that goes to help people, and not a dime helps animals--with certain exceptions to farm animals.

I understand the whole save the family first, and I completely aggree with getting out but seeing video of animals on the rooftops waiting to be rescued broke my heart. So my kids and I have a plan in place for today. We are going to make two cans for donations - one for the American Red Cross and one for the Humane Society of the United States - and for the next week or two ask everyone we know and see to contribute to one or the other, or both, in order to make some small contribution to the victims of this devastating hurricane. It will be a good lesson in charity for them. :goodvibes
Thanks Tina for inspiring this on this thread. And thanks in a roundabout way to Mickey's Monkey for helping me realize that there are people who may be offended by our asking for help for animals. My kids certainly don't need to be reprimanded by anyone for their efforts so we'll give people a choice with the two cans and everyone will benefit. ;)

I was listening to a local radio show and they were talking about the animals...so sad so don't read if you don't want to cry.
In one instance people on a roof were watching a dog yelping as he was dog paddling in flood waters....He gave one last yelp and drowned.
Also when they go to rescue the people trapped, the pets are not allowed. Families have to leave them to die.
Everything is sooo sad...From people to animals...it is just ALL breaking my heart.

I just couldn't imagine leaving my dogs behind. I could just cry. I would tell the rescuers to just leave me. I would rather die.

Anne,
Actually, it is pronounced "Jeannie".
I have been reading your posts and saw your sig and that's where I have been getting some info. Thank you for that. Getting trained is a great idea, infact I used to work in a vets office so I do have a little experience. I live in Tampa, FL so it would probably be very good to be trained in rescue as we are so close to the coast.

I went to the website for the American Humane Society and made a donation. On the site, they outlined what and how they would like to help take care of the animals. It is so overwhelming to think of what both people and animals are going through in this disaster. Animals have to rely on people to help them. They cannot help themselves. I am sure most of the donations are going to "people" charities. I am glad there are animals lovers who are willing to donate for the benefit of the animals. Everyone is entitled to donate to whatever charity they want. I could not imagine leaving my doggie behind. She is a big part of our family. My heart goes out to every person and animal in need.

Petsmart is also taking donations until the end of Sept. tagged for the hurricane relief program, they normally have that donation thing (twice a year) where you give so much and you get a T-shirt, tote bag or mouse pad for free, I was in there today and they still have that promotion going but the money goes to the hurricane relief now. I have always trusted Petsmart for helping animals so those of you who don't want to donate online or send a check this maybe an option, even if it is only a dollar.

YOU HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!
There are groups that are trained to rescue ANIMALS. Unless you want them to snare a person with a pole, stuff them into a crate, feed them hay, and haul them off to a shelter where they will live in a kennel, SHUT UP!
I am SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!
I want to get the people out of there are well, but the people there for the animals are specially trained and equipped to deal with animals, not people. They are the same people who do ANIMAL rescues at all major disasters, wildfires, earthquakes, tornado's, bombings, and are WIDELY RESPECTED by their colleagues who do Rescue and Recovery for people. The two groups coexist side by side with no problem.
Just go away if you aren't interested in animals. Frankly, they are better company than ignorant people. Take that as you will.

I just received the following from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (I will add to the sticky post too):
=================================================
Dear Members and Friends,
Hurricane Katrina has dealt a devastating blow to the Gulf Coast and it will
take years for the region to recover. The toll on the human victims is almost
beyond imagining. A toll has also been taken on the animal companions in the
devastation as well.
Many people were forced to leave their homes during and in the aftermath of
the hurricane and couldn’t bring their animal friends with them. We know and
understand the anguish these caregivers are going through and want to assist
in the rescue of these helpless victims.
Best Friends is asking that you contact any friends or relatives that you have
who were required to evacuate the disaster areas. If they have companion

I live in Long Island New York and am trying to find out about any organizations that need people to be a foster family (short, long or permanent) for dogs that have been left homeless by the hurricane. I can take in one dog (any size), I have 5 children ranging in age from 4 to 19. Please post or pm me if you can help. Thank you.
I would contact Best Friends or the Humane Society. I'm sure both will be compiling lists of host families.

Call North Shore Animal League. It's my understanding that they are the point of contact for any animals moved to that area.

Well I finished my collection at work and mailed out the check today to Noah's Wish. We collected $304, plus my check for $25 and my MIL for $10, so a total of $339. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I am pleased with the efforts. My department is an AP processing department, so most of the people don't make a lot of money, and they were still able to give at least $5.
When I went on the website to get the mailing address, I saw that they already had rescued 300+ animals. :cheer2: I am sure there are many more out there, but at least it is a start!

Why can't those who complain understand that the Animal Rescue groups are NOT going to rescue people. They are not trained to do so and they won't be allowed to do so. They would just stay home if they can't rescue animals. Grrrr...
Anyway, thanks for posting the info. I am hoping that some of the shelter animals are brought into north Texas at some point. I might look into adopting one or two homeless cats.

I sure hope they can get in their soon to rescue the animals. I've got to believe, that for these pet owners, the thought of leaving their animals behind will probably haunt them forever. I think it's worth it if, at the end of all this, the bright spots could be that some families get reunited with their pets. I think if I had lost EVERYTHING (including my animals), it would be great to know that somewhere down the line, we might be reunited.

One of the saddest stories that I have read is about a little boy that was boarding one of the buses from the Superdome. He wasn't allowed to take his dog. The story said he cried until he threw up.

Here is the latest from Best Friends and what they need from YOU:
Dear Members and Friends,
Thank you so much for all the offers of help and support. Best Friends role in the hurricane relief effort is now becoming considerably more focused, and we’ll be updating you every day or two. Here’s today’s update:
BACKGROUND:
We are now working on site with the St Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown – about 100 miles north of New Orleans. We consider them a sister sanctuary. They have facilities for about 400 dogs and cats. And they are being inundated! 80 more from the Humane Society of Louisiana. And 100 more from Jefferson Parish (New Orleans) Animal Control.
They have food for less than 24 hours. And they have a well, but no power to pump water. But they do have the basic facilities to operate as a sanctuary for adoptable animals from New Orleans.
So we are working with them to build up their facilities and run a joint project as base camp for adoptable animals being evacuated from New Orleans.
Our Director of Ops, Paul Berry, is now in metro New Orleans, working with Bert Smith, Director of Animal Control for Jefferson Parish. Bert is charged with rounding up stray animals. And he in turn will be taking as many as we possibly can to the St Francis sanctuary for shelter, and then to be placed in foster or adoptive homes.
A team of four from here at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary set off in a convoy for Louisiana this morning (Thursday). They are carrying food, generators, fencing, and many other supplies.
Another team from Best Friends Atlanta arrived in Louisiana this afternoon to start ferrying animals from animal control to the St Francis sanctuary.

They ARE letting rescuers through for the people but refusing animal crews to go along side with them. Rescuers are not allowed to take animals so they just leave them. What's the harm of letting the animal crews in also?
According to what I've heard on TV:
The animal rescue folks have been working in Miss. and Ala. since Thursday or Friday. They were allowed in after the rescue and recovery teams got a head start.
Critters rescued in Miss. as of yesterday: well over one hundred.
Another thing to consider, this is not just about Pup or Kitty, ranch animals of all sorts need feed and water. Those eggs some of us had this morning may well have come from a chicken coop that is now a pile of splinters. If the majority of small ranchers herds can be saved, that will put those folks closer to being economically self sufficient, and be one small step on the road back.
The piece about the folks in Miss. who raise minuture horses was tough. Two lay dead in the yard, the survivors were munching the last of the hay.
As for fundraising, more has been pledged in a shorter time than for 9/11 or the tsunami, nearing $300 million as of yesterday. That's from you and me, individuals, not corporate. Humane society pledges are at about $3 million. IMHO, we've got our priorites in the right order. There is so much to do, but we will get it done.

Not to sound insenstive but I would prefer to see the bulk of the relief funds go to humans first.
I have no doubt that the bulk of the relief will go to help people. However, there is no reason why we should not support the good work being done by organizations like the Humane Society as well as that done by the Red Cross and other people-oriented relief organizations. I know personally I have given to organizations for both people and pets.
In addition, by helping the pets, we are also helping the people. The Humane Society is receiving and responding to thousands and thousands of calls from hurricane victims asking them to go and rescue their pets from the disaster zones. As animal lovers, I think the people on this thread understand the comfort that the Humane Society gives by letting people who have lost everything know that somebody is there to search for and, hopefully, save the pets they were forced to leave behind.

I saw on the news (ands I am sure others have too) where I think it was LA dairy farmers were dumping truckloads of milk. They even mentioned no food for the cows. So yes, household pets are just a portion.

And yes I did give to the Salvation Army in addition to Noah's Wish. I'd never heard of Noah's Wish until I read about it on these boards.

Terri Crisp, the director of Nah's Wish was previously the founder of EARS, which is the disaster rescue branch of United ANimal Nations.
Terri decided that to be most effective, a rescue organization should be independent of any lobbying group, and thus she left EARS and started Noah's Wish. Their entire mission is to rescue animals after disasters.

And of course, you can donate to help if you wish. I DID!!!!!

Way to go North Shore Animal league. I finally received a response back from North Shore ( I e-mailed the over the weekend) reguarding my interest in fostering or adopting a dog that needs a home due to Katrina.
The response back was that they are rescuing animals from other shelters, and if my pet needs to be rescued, who to contact in Birmingham. I should also include how many of my pets need to be rescued, as well as their age, breed and location.
Did they even bother to read my e-mail? Yet one more reason for me not to like North Shore Animal League.

DH just told me he heard on the news today that the mayor of NO has called for the shooting of dogs since they are "becoming a burden". I have not been able to find this anywhere online. Can anyone confirm? Good God...
I did find this article on rescue efforts which I thought was positive.

North Shore Animal League is in it for the $$. They're more interested in selling puppies. It started out as a shelter. I adopted a great dog from them in 1970 but they've evolved into a For profit agency since then, IMHO.
I hope NShore is getting puppies from the Metro animal shelter (http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/AL52.html) Tuscaloosa Alabama located in the town of Nichols. It's a kill shelter (they don't like to admit it) with lots of very nice puppies. That's where Einstein (pic below) came from. DS was a college student who couldn't resist saving him.
I do hope none of the hurricane dogs end up there. I'll keep looking at petfinder.com to check on them. Pretty sure you can adopt out of state from them.

AZA ACCREDITED ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS RALLY TO AID NEW ORLEANS ZOO AND AQUARIUM COLLEAGUES, ANIMALS AFTER HURRICANE DISASTER
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, an accredited member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), joins with other member zoos and aquarium to respond to our New Orleans colleagues need for help following the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. The 211-accredited-member association announced a national fundraising initiative to help the Audubon Nature Institute, which includes the Audubon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas, and the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species. The facilities and their staff, like all New Orleanians, are struggling in the aftermath of the disaster. Kevin Bell, President and CEO of Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, is spearheading the AZA member fund drive to help provide immediate and long-term relief for staff and their families, the animals, and the facilities.
To make a donation, visit the Lincoln Park Zoo web site at www.lpzoo.org and click on hurricane relief, or mail a check, made out to The Lincoln Park Zoological Society, and send it to: Lincoln Park Zoo, P.O. Box 14903, Chicago IL 60614, Attention: Hurricane Katrina Relief.
AZA is providing frequent updates on the zoo and aquarium situation in New Orleans at www.aza.org/Newsroom/hurricaneupdate/
Dr. Condy, Executive Driector of Fossil Rim, has informed AZA that Fossil Rim is ready to assist to the extent it can, when Audubon Zoo is able to advise how Fossil Rim and others can provide useful assistance. We appreciate any efforts on your part to assist us during this particularly sorrowful time for our nation and our zoological community.
