I wonder when the shelters close.
I just hope that the SuperDome withstands the weather and potential debris.

Hey I'm not knocking the bar owners, but it just seems some people are so irresponsible and then they get mad at the city and whatnot...as far as no place to go, I heard a list of shelters, including the SuperDome, early this morning.
Superdome was listed as a medical needs only shelter this a.m. At some point they changed it.
This is precisely why there is no such thing as suing the government for poor plans---b/c it is ultimately a personal decision....and if they wish to be drunk on bourbon street---at least their death may not be as painful as if they were sober. Sickening thought...but whatever floats their boat!

The carriage rides are all privately owned. So, whatever it is that the owners do with their horses is what they will do lol.

Wouldn't a big arena have back up generators? I can't imagine spending God-knows-what to build that and not have some back up systems...
I just don't like people getting drunk and then getting mad saying they have no where to go. The city is doing everything they can and the last thing they need is a bunch of drunks getting angry at people! I'm sorry but it's not going to help the situation.

LisaLovesPooh,
Wow. I was pregnant during Jeanne so we didn't have to worry about the bottle thing.
We were lucky enough to get a generator and gasoline from DH's employer.
I can't imagine going through this with a baby. Our DD doesn't nurse anymore so I'm out of luck in that area.
Stay safe everyone :grouphug:

Nothing more than battery operated emergency exits/lights I would imagine.
Schools don't really have them either and they are used for shelters.
Last I checked--a football game was not a necessity--so not a real need to have back up equipment to continue power in the event of an outage.

Sen. Mary Landrieu saying don't compare Katrina to Betsy or any other hurricane. That was a long time ago and the coastline and marshlands have deteriorated since then. Also much more concrete in New Orleans. This will be much worse. Could be the Storm of the Century for New Orleans, but we're as ready as we can be.

bengalbelle,
Yep. On one of the shows, they mentioned how this goes way past being a cat 5 hurricane, but since the system only goes that far, that's what they have to go by. You can't compare this storm to anyother one, because this more than likely is going to be that once in a life time storm that many have been predicting for some time now.

In all fairness--one or two idiots on bourbon street does not provide a great sampling of why they are all down there.
Hotels and guests are not under mandatory evac--they could just be goofing off until they get holed up in their hotel room.

HURRICANE KATRINA DISCUSSION NUMBER 24
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
5 PM EDT SUN AUG 28 2005
KATRINA IS MAINTAINING A CLASSIC PRESENTATION ON SATELLITE
IMAGES...AND CATEGORY 5 INTENSITY. THE CENTRAL PRESSURE MEASURED
BY A NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER PLANE AT 1755Z AND 1923Z WAS 902
MB...WHICH IS THE FOURTH LOWEST ON RECORD IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN
BEHIND HURRICANE GILBERT OF 1988...THE LABOR DAY HURRICANE OF
1935...AND HURRICANE ALLEN OF 1980. HAVING SAID THAT...DATA FROM
THE STEPPED-FREQUENCY MICROWAVE RADIOMETER INSTRUMENT ON BOARD THE
AIRCRAFT SUGGEST THAT THE SURFACE TO 700 MB FLIGHT LEVEL WIND RATIO
IS NOT QUITE AS LARGE AS WE TYPICALLY USE...AND THE INITIAL
INTENSITY IS ADJUSTED SLIGHTLY TO 145 KT. HURRICANES DO NOT
MAINTAIN SUCH GREAT INTENSITY FOR VERY LONG. HOWEVER THERE ARE NO
OBVIOUS LARGE-SCALE MECHANISMS...SUCH AS INCREASED VERTICAL
SHEAR...TO WEAKEN KATRINA. THE HURRICANE IS LIKELY TO MAKE
LANDFALL WITH CATEGORY 4 OR 5 INTENSITY.
THERE IS NOT MUCH CHANGE TO THE TRACK FORECAST PHILOSOPHY. INITIAL
MOTION IS ABOUT 315/11. KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY TURN
NORTHWARD INTO A BREAK IN THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE ASSOCIATED WITH A
LARGE MID-LATITUDE CYCLONE NEAR THE GREAT LAKES. THE 12Z GFDL
HURRICANE MODEL'S TRACK HAS SHIFTED A LITTLE WESTWARD...AS HAS THE
LATEST NOGAPS RUN. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST IS SLIGHTLY TO THE WEST
AND SLIGHTLY FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS NHC TRACK. THIS IS VERY
CLOSE TO BOTH THE DYNAMICAL MODEL CONSENSUS... AND TO THE LATEST
FSU SUPERENSEMBLE TRACK. AMONG OUR MOST RELIABLE MODELS...ONLY THE
U.K. MET. OFFICE IS SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE EAST OF THE OFFICIAL
FORECAST TRACK. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE SMALL CHANGE IN THE
OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK IS ESSENTIALLY AT THE NOISE LEVEL. ONE
SHOULD NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT TRACK...PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE OF A
HURRICANE AS LARGE AS THIS ONE. DESTRUCTIVE EFFECTS WILL LIKELY BE
FELT WELL AWAY FROM THE CENTER AND IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO SPECIFY
WHICH COUNTIES OR PARISHES WILL EXPERIENCE THE WORST CONDITIONS.
ON THE BASIS OF AIRCRAFT FLIGHT LEVEL AND SFMR SURFACE WIND
DATA...THE WIND RADII HAVE BEEN EXPANDED EVEN MORE OVER THE
NORTHERN SEMICIRCLE. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ARE FORECAST TO SPREAD
AT LEAST 150 N MI INLAND ALONG THE PATH OF KATRINA. CONSULT INLAND
HURRICANE AND TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS ISSUED BY NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE FORECAST OFFICES.

Well speaking from experience (at least my DH experience) alot of people are not decent after a hurricane and have no power. My DH is a lineman and when he worked the Florida hurricanes last year, they had to have a national gaurdsman or cop follow them everywhere, because people were trying to harm them. I am not saying everyone was like that, but he said the people just got crazy. He said it couldn't imagine all that he saw last year, he is not looking forward to what he will see with this, when he goes out.
Anyone that loses power please be patient, most of these guys are working 20 hour days, running on 4 hours of sleep and risking their lives to turn on your power. (lack of sleep + electricity can = death)
So give some slack to all the people that are working to help you out. (police, national gaurd, fire, ect.)
Stay safe all that are in the area of Katrina. :goodvibes

This is the scariest thing I have ever read in regards to weather.
DEVASTATING DAMAGE EXPECTED
HURRICANE KATRINA
A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED
STRENGTH...RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969.
MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT
LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL
FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY
DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.
THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL.
PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD
FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE
BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME
WALL AND ROOF FAILURE.
HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A
FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT.
AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH
AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY
VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE
ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE
WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.
POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN
AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING
INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.
THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY
THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW
CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE
KILLED.
AN INLAND HURRICANE WIND WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS NEAR
HURRICANE FORCE...OR FREQUENT GUSTS AT OR ABOVE HURRICANE FORCE...ARE
CERTAIN WITHIN THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS.
ONCE TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ONSET...DO NOT VENTURE
OUTSIDE!
This blip in question was just read on the news---it is not a hoax update.

Speaking of Aussies my friend from over there IM'd me this morning all worried because he saw it on the news and it looked like it was heading right for me... makes you wonder about the foreign tourists families, they must be worried sick and are probably not getting the full news story that we are.

They won't even beable to esses the damages until the water gets pumped out if it needs to be and that could take weeks to figure out how to do that. Once that is done then they will beable to see what kind of damage was done to the grid and if it can be saved which it probably won't.

I heard on the TV that they could have one million + "refugees" with nowhere to go...where will they put them all? Does FEMA have the resources to provide for this number of people??
FEMA has been preparing for years for a catastrophy of this magnitude but even all the planning in the world can't prepare you to deal with 500,000+ homeless people overnight in an area still riddled with water and devistation.

Shutters prevent a breech in the windows that would allow the winds to suck the roof off your house. The storm surge is the bigger concern in this storm than the winds though, I guess :( There may be nothing left to protect from the flying debris once the storm surge is there.

Hi everyone! We're here in Baton Rouge waiting it out. No rain or anything yet here. My mom and grandparent came up here...they live south of New Orleans. We're expecting to lose power, so I'm not looking forward to that! DS has been sick, but is finally getting better. And now I'm sick and not getting better so it will be really fun when the power goes out.
Good luck and stay safe! Make sure you check in here and let us know how things are going! Thoughts and prayers are with you.

My cousin is working at a Healthcare facility. She is an LPN. She is smack in between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. :( This does not look good for her. :(
Here's a map. You may need to pan out to see the river, but her work is the red star.

We have 6 other healthcare facilities in Mississippi but I don't know exactly where they are located. They use to evacuate and place everyone in other facilities some years back.

I am wondering, when do they close the doors to the Superdome? They wouldn't just say "We're filled, sorry" would they?
And what happens if there are still lines to get inside while the hurricane is making itself more known? Eventually the conditions will get too bad. Will they just leave the people who are left, out there?
This is just devastating.

The Superdome can hold 72K people. I doubt they'd just shut the doors, maybe they'd just rush everyone in. I'm sure they are going as fast as possible.
Just heard about a hospital in NO -- they have enough supplies to last for an entire week. The Natl. Guard is guarding it to prevent people from going to the hospital to use it as a shelter or who might try and steal supplies...

the weather channel interview someone in charge who said they would close
when the last person was in, however, they said it would only hold about 20,000 (becaue of flooding reasons) and right now it has about 12,000 in it. and they think it is most definatally going to flood on the floor of it.

Anyone know whether most of the hospitals are staying open or have evacuated? I work for a healthcare organization, and while everyone else is going home or leaving town, our folks are headed into work - sometimes with families in tow. I always feel for the folks whose job is the public interest, and can't go with their family to safety as you know most of their friends and neighbors are doing.

Our hospital learned the hard way to do this. During Ivan, we had the whole neighborhood it was in (uh, not the nicest neighborhood at that) come to the hospital for shelter. They were sleeping everywhere. On floors, prayer rooms, waiting rooms. It was horrible and especially dangerous. Now we are allowed to have our family members bunk with us, but they wear a blue arm band to id themselves as "legal". It might seem mean to do it, but the influx of people were depleting the hospitals supplies and we did have one day where we had to ration water. Talk about eerie, I thought I was on a MASH episode. We also had no power, running water or.... sewer...I won't even go into that story....

Luckily we have never had to go to a shelter.
I know for the hurricanes here they announced when they would shut the doors at a set time. And they said No Exceptions. They said allowing people to enter would only bring potential harm to those inside.
But a school is different than a SuperDome.
:confused3
It will get to the point no one can walk or stand outside anyway.
Sitting in a shelter and knowing you may be there for days, and not knowing what has happened to your house or loved ones would be horrible.
Hopefully they can use cell phones. But I imagine the towers may go too.

The cell phones were iffy, and not to be used unless of an emergency.

Got an update on the dome....
They are still letting people in--not sure if that line is from earlier..but the representative from the Superdome says that some are still coming--so it sounds like your feed might be old.
The Superdome--once the doors are sealed is like a bubble and water cannot get in. This at least is good for flooding purposes.
They have nearly 40,000..there are some light meals, but he said it was bare bones as that many people is a lot for the Army Corps of Engineers to handle. And for those who are interested--the ACOE is station on the 50-yard line.
They are still letting people in and will do so until they have to close the door which is a few more hours.
And they do indeed have generators should the power kick out. He said for the past 2 times the superdome was used--the people there never noticed that the power was gone (I guess they must kick in quickly).
The biggest problem for the most part is the cabin fever that develops.

There's going to be a point where people are just going to have to drop anything unnecessary to speed this up....it's going to get very serious soon. I wish WLLTV would show a feed of the Superdome. I'd like to see what's happening there.
I think they evacuated most of the equipment and reporters (the live trucks are hundreds of thousands of dollars). I don't think there are any reporters at the Superdome.
The cams I think were city cams....but not sure.

Yeah that makes sense. It's too bad they don't have any remote cameras, but they are probably expensive as well.

Yeah thanks for the update. The next 24-36 are just going to be unbearable if everything goes a badly as they are saying.
