Staying for discounts?

We are going to be going to WDW in October this year, and we would like to stay at one of the value resorts. I was thinking of ASMo at this point. What is the best way to go about getting a great deal on our room?

AAA? Specific website? Call the resort? Combination?

Also, what is the benefit, besides the Disney atmosphere, of staying at a Disney resort, as opposed to one of the hotels in Downtown Disney? I ws thinkinf of the Fairfield Inn or Courtyard at Marriott. Both of these seem to be cheaper options and have free shuttle service to the parks. Am I being fooled? Is this really a bad option, and why?

Well, for one thing the Disney resorts have early entry as well as extra magic hours, other hotels don't !

As far as getting the best deal, sometimes there are room codes, but as of right now there isn't anything except for the AAA rate (unless you have an anual pass) , your best bet would be to call Disney and book with that rate, if a cheaper price (code) comes along, then you can call back and adjust the price
