How do I request a design?
by Julia&Nicks Mom

There are several DISers who are more than happy to help you make a design. The best place to start is on the Design thread (insert link here) – the designs should be marked as to whether the designer is willing to customize. Several DISers have websites with their designs on them. If you don’t see what you want, you can send a PM to the designer making a request. When you post a request in a thread you run the risk of it getting lost in the thread. A direct PM will get you the fastest results. Please do not request the same design from multiple designers – they have a lot of requests and do not want to be duplicating each other’s work – in addition – it can take a while to design a custom shirt and asking two people to design a shirt and only choosing one is wasting the other designers time.

Designers willing to make custom designs:

What software programs do you use?
Photoshop is a great program but costs close to $500 – most people are using Photo Impact – which is under $100 and we have found for $29.99 during sales

How do I use Photo Impact 10?
You can download a 30 day free trial

Here are some links to Photo Impact tutorials:

Top two Photo Impact questions

I can't select my image to edit it – what am I doing wrong?

To edit an image – you will need to make sure it is a layer and not the base object:
Choose cut
And paste it either back onto the original image or into a new document – you will then be able to select the object for editing

How do I erase a background?
select your item
on the left of the screen is a toolbar - there looks like what appears to be an eraser - when you click on its arrow - it says object magic eraser
if you choose this - it erases all of one color - so if your background is white - boom done!
you can choose different degrees of matching - so you can get all shades of blue - but be careful if it matches something in what you want - it will be erased

The easiest way to learn photoimpact is to take an image and just start trying all the different effects

DESIGN TIPS
by Midnite

A quick color tip:

if you're using clipart in your design, pull some of the colors out of the clipart for use in your text and/or background. Use your eyedropper tool to select one of the more prominent colors in your clipart. You may need to adjust the saturation or brightness of the color to make it work in the design.

Negative space:

"In a painting or drawing, the space around the object is just as important as the object itself. A good artist strives for a balance between the positive (the object) space and the negative (background) space around it. The object ... is to work with the surrounding space." Basically, it's wherever there isn't "something". Take a look at the areas around the placement of your text or pictures. Try to make those shapes just as interesting and balanced as you do the placement of your objects.

Color:

Do some research on color schemes, color theory, and the color wheel. It will kick up your work a notch.

Clipart:

Try to get as big clipart as you can. You can get away with using smaller, lower resolution images somewhat, but it will look super if you start with a larger image and scale it down rather than vice versa.

PHOTOSHOP TIPS

First of all, use layers, use layers, use layers!!! What's a layer, you say? It's just what it says it is. They are transparent layers (until you put something on them), one on top of the other. The beauty of it is you can put something on a layer and the move it around or manipulate it with Filters or Effects without effecting the other layers in your work!

Use Guides, also. When you're moving your objects around, use guides for easy alignment.

Layer masks are very useful. When you have an object on a layer (clipart, text, shapes) you can use a layer mask to erase or hide parts of that layer without actually erasing your object.

Play with the effects on text and shapes to see what each one does.

Also, play with the filters on photographs. Try to learn what kind of result you can get by playing with the filter settings (sliders) and by combining two or more filters.

Above all, learn these two words: "photoshop tutorials" Use them well, use them often -- in your favorite search engine. Everything I know about Photoshop, I've either learned online, in a book, using the Help Files (F1 key on your keyboard when you are using Photoshop), or by playing with the settings.

SWIFT3D TIPS

To make the 3D reflection, go to Setup (I think?? anyway, it's one of the options at the top),

Edit Environments.

Choose Add Material

Make a name for it, like "Disney Background"

Using the drop down menu, select Bitmap Image

Navigate to the image you want to use. Save it and close.

Create a sphere (or three, in the case of Mickey) by using one of the "Primitives" at the top.

Choose the Materials Tab, find the Metal, Chrome.

Drag and drop the Chrome material onto the sphere.

Select the Environments Tab.

Drag and drop the New Environment ("Disney Background") onto the stage (not the sphere)

Then render it and export it as a PNG.

As with Photoshop, just play with the settings.

Design TIPS
by Beiji

For most of the classic Mickeys I re-work the first Mickey I created. So, I change the color or add a bevel, gradient, or drop shadow. In order to get the ears in the right place I set up guides. I'll put in one guide at the top of the first Mickey ear and one at the side after I've put the ear in place. Then I copy the ear, drag it to the other side of the head, and use free transform to rotate it and move it into place using the guides to find the right placement. Even, with all that, I think one is slightly off, but it's not really noticeable.

In Photoshop, I always save my files with all the layers. If I need to flatten an image, I'll give it a different name. That way I can go back and manipulate the different elements whenever I want to.

Where do you get your clipart?
by J&NMom

You can do an image search using Yahoo! or Google
Click on the images search tab: and type in what you are looking for
The more specific you are – the less likely you will get good results – start with a basic description and then narrow it down
Small images will not work well in your design. I think an image usually needs to be at least 300 pixels to enlarge well. The bigger your image, the easier it will be to modify.

Tips if you have AOL
by Mrs.Squirrel

AOL automatically compresses graphics files to enhance speed (I did not come up with this, I found it on a troubleshooting website so if it is not the exact explanation, please no flames!) I guess that's where the .art comes from.

You have to go into AOL's Settings

If you have 9.0, view by category.

Under Customize AOL click view all.

Scroll down to How AOL Works and click on Browser Settings.

Change the default to Never Compress Graphics.

Once the change takes place and you right click on a image, you should see other graphic save options.

How do I post an image on the boards?
by J&NMom

You will first need to find somewhere to host your images: Photobucket.com is a free account that a lot of DISers recommend

How to upload a picture to Photobucket

http://photobucket.com/tutorials/upload_single/up.html

How to post a design from photobucket

Once you have uploaded your design to photobucket – you will be showed a thumbnail gallery –
under each gallery are three boxes with codes in them – select the code labeled IMG –
copy and paste this code into your post and your picture will show up

How to post images from other sources

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.p...&postcount=1262

Preparing to print your design

You can print your designs in several ways –

To make a mirror image in paint:

Press Ctrl+R – this will bring up the flip/rotate dialogue window
Choose flip horizontal and then click on okay – this should give you a mirror image of your design

To Print from Paint:

Open a copy in Paint and print it from there – be sure to use print preview and make any adjustments if it does not fill the page as desired.

Click on file, page setup and you will be able to make your design portrait or landscape

You can also set margins

To make your design fit on one page – use the scaling option and choose fit to a 1 x 1 page

To have a little more flexibility in working with the design you can insert the image into a Word Document

To insert an image into Word:

From the toolbar – select insert

Then picture
From file

Use the file browser to locate your file

Choose the file and then click insert

To change the size of a photo in word

You can then right click on the picture and choose format picture
then click on the size tab
and choose the dimensions you want the file to be (make sure your margins are set as small as possible)

or

click on the image and place your arrow over one of the corner guides

when it become a two way arrow

click on it and drag the arrow to the size you want the photo to be

(make sure you use a corner guide – the middle guides will change the aspect ratio)

To make a mirror image in Word:

This will be done in the printer options – how to do this will vary by printer
Choose File

Print
and then Properties

there is probably a layout feature that will have a mirror image option – choose this option and then print

Not all printers can do this – if not you will have to first reverse the image in paint (see directions above)

What type transfer paper should I use?

There are two basic types of transfer paper – one for light shirts and one for dark shirts.

• The Light transfer paper is translucent and the color of the shirt will show through the transfer paper

• The Dark transfer paper is white and any part you do not cut away will show up on the shirt as white.

• There is no consensus on which brand of paper to use – although Avery and HP seem to be the most consistent choices.

• Some recommend using the dark transfer paper regardless of the shirt color as the colors seem more vibrant

What type shirt (fabric)should I use?
by Baloo and J&NMom

Cotton or Poly/Cotton Blend fabric

T-shirts

Sweat shirts or pants

Canvas totes

Pillow cases

Walmart and Kmart carry Hanes and Fruit of the Loom shirts at every day low prices! ;)

Most hobby stores sell T-shirts for around $2.99 and people have been very happy with these shirts.

Check out the sales racks in whatever store you're in,there's no telling what sort of prize you might find!

Do you have any tips on ironing the transfer?
by Baloo and J&NMom

These are tips for transferring that people have suggested .But directions on different brands of transfer paper vary so be sure to read and follow the manufactures directions!

You MUST prewash your shirts before transferring

Prewash ANY fabric before using transfers. It removes sizing or starch applied by the manufacture.

Do NOT add fabric softener or bleach when prewashing.

Do NOT add fabric softener sheets when drying.

• Print a Preview ... always, always print a preview copy of your image before printing it on the (expensive) transfer paper. Do this to insure that colors print correctly, that your image doesn't fall into your printer's no-print zone along the margins, and to see what size your design will be (sometimes the on-screen view can be deceiving).

• Flip Image if the directions call for it don't forget to flip or mirror your image. This is especially critical if you have text in your design. The text should be backwards on screen or on the print out. (Another good reason to print a preview copy first!)

• Use the Right Side of the Paper ...Transfer paper has stripes or a grid on the non-printing side. Be sure to put the paper in your printer so that it prints on the clean white side.

• White Does Not Print... In designing your artwork remember that WHITE does not print. The fabric will show through any parts of the design that are white. For example, if you print a white ghost on plaid fabric — you'll get a plaid ghost! Plan your design accordingly. As with any desktop publishing project, consider the background color when selecting colors for your designs.

• Test on Scrap Fabric Test... your design on “scratch fabric” before applying it to your final T-shirt or other fabric. Some types of fabric may require more ironing (heat) than others or may not show off your design as well as you expected.

• Use Lots of Heat... Use your iron's hottest setting but no steam. It takes a lot of heat to transfer the image evenly and completely to the fabric. Peel off the paper while it is still hot.

• Use a Hard Surface... The reason transfer instructions specify a hard surface (such as formica) is because it holds the heat. Ironing boards tend to disperse the heat and the transfer paper needs to be very hot to work properly.

Tips from Tricialiv

I have TransferMagic paper from Hobby Lobby. It was 14 sheets for $11.99. The transfers went on great. I hope they wash well. I just did my first on dark fabric. It was the POC on a black T. It looks great. I can't post pics yet. The transferMagic paper has some Hanes OOps proof card. You can send them the shirt that didn't come out and they will take it back if it's a hanes shirt. It also has a Hanes t-shirt maker program to download for free. I haven't yet though. I got DS & DD Hanes long sleeve shirts for $3.99 at Hobby Lobby.

Tips from lovesdumbo

The transfers for Dark T's you print onto the sheet without reversing the print. You cut around the image and then peel the backing off and you have sort a plastic like film that you put on the T, cover that with a sheet of parchment paper and press. Anything that you don't cut off will be white so it is probably easiest to do a design with a clean line border like the Mission Mickey I did.

DanaUK
I spent ages carefully cutting the transfers out but I think it was worth it.

TYE DYING SHIRTS

I will be working to increase and improve the tye dye section over the next few weeks! There's only so much time in a day!

Directions from Cojochurch
First you will need the dye. I got a kit at Michaels that came with the instructions, dye, squirt bottles, soda ash, gloves, and rubber bands. Get 100% cotton shirts. That is very important so that you get vibrant colors. Do not use Rit Dye – you will not get vibrant colors!

Take the shirt and draw a mickey head in pencil, on the shirt. I made a pattern on papper first and then traced along the edge. You will then "sew" the pattern. Use a needle and thread. I got a waxed thread at Michaels to make sure it didn't take up the dye. Sew a 1/4" - 1/2" basting stitch along the pencil line. A basting stitch is a very simple stitch that goes up & down through the fabric. Only go through the front of the shirt if that is where you want the mickey to be. If you want it on front and back. Do each side separtely. After stitching along the complete line, knot it, and pull it tight, so the fabric gathers in a bunch. Make sure the inside of the Mickey is poking outward. Pleat the rest of the fabric, so that you have a long snake like tube. The more careful you are with pleating the fabric along the length of the shirt, the better the final result. Go easy, and take your time. Wrap a rubber band around the threaded bunch. The tighter the tie, the more defined the outline of the mickey will be. Place remaining rubber bands in 1"-2" intervals along the rest of the shirt. It is a little hard to explain, but when you are done you will have a long snake. One end is the mickey on front of shirt and the other end it the back mickey. Through the middle is the rest of shirt (arms, neck etc.).

Then follow the instructions in the kit for preparing and dying shirts. The squirt bottles make it possible to get the specific color where you want it.

Is this the right place to post this? Or does it need to be up there in the other tips? :confused3

Hold down the Shift key to keep things in a 90° or 45° alignment. This includes drawing straight lines and moving objects around. Also, in some programs, you can use the Shift key to select multiple objects so they can be moved together as a group.

This thread is costing me money...but it's worth it, LOL! First I bought transfers and t-shirts, then I had to have glitter. (Bought the wrong kind first...it still puzzles me why they would make a spray on glitter for clothing that washes out.) Finally decided I needed Photo Impact 10. I got it. (After DS-21 tells me his program can do the same thing. I decided it was too difficult and wouldn't do evrything I wanted it to.) Now to figure out how to use Photo Impact, I plan on putting it in the laptop too and taking it to some shows with me so I can learn the program.
Thanks for all the great ideas!

I wanted to ask where I could order a wonderful custom made Sweat shirt for my daughter for our christmas trip to WDW and found this wonderful information. There is just one BIG problem - here in Spain (Europe :goodvibes ) there is no chance to get any of the mentioned material needed to iron something on.
I am now looking for a wonderful person who would custom make my daughter a Red Sweater for our Christmas Party at Disney. I would pay all the costs up front, and you do not have to send it over here, but to our hotel around the 5th of December. Is there anyone who could help or tell me of a company where I can get one done???? Usually I love to do all kind of crafting, but Spain is a not even developping country for this kind of thing!!

Hola, disneycrazyinspain! At CafePress (http://www.cafepress.com) you can upload images and have them printed on a variety of stuff including sweatshirts, but they don't permit trademarked material (like anything Disney). Zazzle (http://www.zazzle.com) has a Disney license, so they can print Disney characters on their products (they supple the image), and you could add your daughter's name.

I read the tip below under the tips for ironing the transfer and thought I should say that peeling off the paper while it is still hot is NOT true for all transfer papers. Some specifically say to wait until the paper is completely cooled before removing it. It's always best to read directions on the paper you are using to find out what is recommended. I'd hate for someone to ruin their design by thinking all papers direct you to remove it when hot. Some do, but many don't! :flower:

Thanks. You shirt designs are beautiful. I'm really looking for simple. For example, one of the bambi ones at Geocities is Bambi, Thumper and Flower, all watching a butterfly. I would like to be able to enlarge that so it looks right when printed for a shirt with something saying "Remember to stop and appreciate the wonders of nature." (We raise butterflies in our living room)

I thought about doing one with Tramp another two shirts, each with a male pup and another with Lady. We would all wear them on the same day.

Gotta run to the PO. Be back soon.

Mary

I did this on and 8.5 x 11 canvas - so it is as big as you would need it to be for a shirt

That is awesome. How are you enlarging them without them being pixelated? The kbs are almost identical, but yet the ones I saved are horrible when enlarged. Yours looks great. I can design the stuff, I just don't know how you are saving it so it looks so good.

I am using a program called photoimpact - not sure if that is making the difference or not -

whatever program you are using be sure to have an 8.5 x 11 canvas!

Hmmm. Well, I tried opening one of the images in photoshop and enlarging the image to 8.5x11. Got really big and very pixelated. Tried opening new canvas and dragging image to it. That didn't work either. Anyone know photoshop? Do I need to open image and save as psd? I don't think that would do anything different, but...

I know a guy who owns a printing company and prints t-shirts regularly. He said he will press my transfers on the shirts for $1.50 each. I think it is a great deal and will save me some time. I was just wondering if the type of shirt press he has is okay to use on the transfers that you print on. I didn't know if the transfers he usually uses are a different type or not. I don't want it to be so hot that it scorches the transfers. All of the directions seem to be for home iron use. Do you think this will be okay? Did that make any sense? :confused3

I see an awful lot of beautiful designs on this discussion board. I am about to embark on my first trip to Disney with my kids and dad. I would love it if someone would share existing T-shirt designs (if thats legal). Any ways your help will be appreciated. I lack the artistic ability to make something lovely from the clip art. Thanks for your help!

Go to the sticky at the start of this forum - "Dis design gallery" and you'll find links to the talented designers' galleries. Many of them are happy to personalise their designs (unless they are at WDW at the moment!!)

Not sure if this is the place to post or not....

I tried a light t-shirt transfer tonight for the first time. I have a few questions

1. Should I trim closely around the picture before ironing? It looks like I ironed a square onto the front of the shirt.

2. If the transfer turns brown/yellow does this mean I ironed it for too long?

3. Do you print the transfer with the "best" print quality?

Thank goodness it was an old shirt that I practiced on.

Thanks in advance. ;)

Disneymoss and Disnylvr77 -- I suggest if you are looking for designs that you actually go onto the main Board (Creative DISigns) http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=105

and look at the threads there. You will be able to ask your questions by starting your own thread and also look around at the wonderful DISigns that have already been created! This is a "sticky" and most of the designers won't come here to look or post.

A photo program most people don't even know they have that you can do some editing in, great for firsttimers!

A lot of folks when they get a home computer get a CD in the box called Microsoft Works Suite. On there, there often is a program called PictureIt! that has one of the easiest cut-out tools that I have found on any program if you want to cut out say, a character from a larger image.

Also, if you want to try your hand at some modifying techniques but don't have the moolah for Photoshop, try this free program called ArtRage2: http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html . There is also a $20 version. The REALLY COOL thing about this program is you can, for example, take a photo from a previous trip that you have scanned into your computer and with ArtRage, "paint" with the colors that are in the pictures so that it looks like an oil or watercolor painting, as detailed or abstract as you like. It's great for making really unique interpretations of existing characters!

Just a head's up. The Wilton Transfer paper is not worth the time and is a waste of money. the product instructions tell you:
you don't have to reverse the design ( you do),
it also tells you to lay the image ink side up on the t-shirt, all that did was cause the partchement paper to scorch and never transfered the image
when i turned the image ink side down on the shirt and tried to iron it on after leaving the iron on the transfer per their required " 20 second" and then adding up to 5 minutes per section the paper still would not come off ot the shirt with out almost ripping it and it did not hold the color . i'm writing wilton next to get my money back what a waste of time, money and ink.

Thanks to the excellent information in this site, I have successfully created three t-shirt designs. I was able to print them and transfer them without any problems. Here are a few things I learned that have yet to be covered in this thread.

I used transfers from Michaels (Wilton EasyImage transfers) and Avery, both for dark fabrics. We prewashed our fabric, without fabric softener, removed them immediately from the washer and line-dried overnight.

1) Prices for the dark fabric transfers are more expensive than transfers for light fabrics. You also receive less transfers but they appear to have a better quality. We did three shirts. One was black, one was green (almost lime green) and the other was a baby blue, utilizing a pink background design which came out beautifully. Therefore, I think the dark fabric transfers could probably be used with any color fabric and the results will be of a high quality.

2) We preferred the Avery transfers, again due to quality. Prices were comparable.

3) None of the instructions mention what the printer paper settings should be. After a little experimentation, we used the following setting: photo quality paper - semi gloss and used the highest ink setting (in our case, photo.)

4) The above settings not only helped the color saturation quality but really helped the printer 'pull' the paper into the printer. Using other settings caused the printer to think the paper was thicker than it was and crinkled the edges of the transfer, causing all sorts of wonderful issues.

5) We let the transfers 'dry' for a couple of hours before doing the pressing. It was a step just in case any of the printer ink had to dry. Might not be necessary but it didn't hurt.

6) Instead of using an iron, we used what might be considered a commercial press for our transfers. It worked perfectly and seamlessly. We held the press for 3 minutes. Update: Upon a second look, we thought our transfers were more of a matte finish that we had imagined them to be. We decided to put a sheet of parchment back over the completed transfer and apply some more heat via an iron. Great decision, because the transfers looked even better than before! My guess is we didn't set the heat up high enough on the commercial press setting.

7) We have not done a vinegar wash after the transfer. We are still looking into that and might do a test wash with and without to see the best results. I'll post again if I discover anything. Update: Based upon further research using Google, it appears that a cup of vinegar is the best way to 'set' the colors so they do not run and remain vivid. Here is one of many articles I found: Fabrics (http://fibers.com/blog/wash-and-wear-or-not-to-wash-and-wear-t-shirts-that-is-the-question/)

I'm printing on black Ts and dark transfer paper, here is my dilemma,
The Minnie head in red w/ white dots has me wondering about the following tips from this page:
• White Does Not Print... In designing your artwork remember that WHITE does not print. The fabric will show through any parts of the design that are white. For example, if you print a white ghost on plaid fabric — you'll get a plaid ghost! Plan your design accordingly. As with any desktop publishing project, consider the background color when selecting colors for your designs. "NOT so good for my project"

• The Dark transfer paper is white and any part you do not cut away will show up on the shirt as white. 'GOOD for my project!"

Either I'm finding this so intimidating that I can't think or I'm just plain   I know my test sample will help, but does anyone know if I will get white dots on the red background in my minniehead design?

If you use dark transfer paper - your dots will be white. If you use light transfer paper, the dots will be clear (the color of your shirt). I hope that clarifies it for you.

I printed out the image, I flipped it horizontally ( I use photoshop so I went to Image --> Rotate canvas --> Flip canvas horizontal)

and then I printed it out
when it came to the T-shirt, after I ironed it according to the manual, I removed the paper and... it was also flipped horizontally :(

I can't understand why is this happening

Also, after you iron it, it still has the feeling of paper, like you have glued plastic paper on it. It doesn't become one with the tshirt.
Do I do something wrong? or it's the way it should be?
Thank you,
Evangelia

I am not sure where you are located - but if you let me know, I can get a price from the post office on the additional shipping.

From previous requesters, the price increase for a 20 sheet pack are as follows to these locations: UK - $6.00 more/ Canada $2.00 more and Australia $6.00 more. Add these amounts to the $40.00 package price and that would be the total.

I used the Avery brand and though they look great, they are stiff and I'm afraid of wrinkling them. They are also bubbling and ready to peel and crack after about 6 washings.

My first two shirts I used June tailor Copy 'n press, they turned out alright. It was my first time doing this though. Then I tried Transfermations Design & Iron for light shirts. It isn't transferring? Anyone used this brand and can help me out?:confused3

Hi everyone,
I am brand new to this and have never tried to make a t-shirt before. My daughter's birthday is Friday and a wonderful designer made me a birthday design for her.
So I ran out to Wal Mart and got a white t-shirt and transfer paper. The problem is on the package it says for COLOR INK JET printers. I have a color laser jet and, before I open the package, I'm wondering if it's going to work?? I also went to Michael's thinking they might have transfer paper for laser jet, but they don't. So now I'm really stuck. I got the great design and want to get it onto a shirt.
I considered checking with Staples in their copy area and see if they might be able to get the image onto transfer paper for me.
Thanks!

So, I was wondering something... A lot of you are saying that amy's transfers are the best. When compared with other transfers such as wilton etc... what makes them better than any others?

Also, I have been taking in so much information that maybe my brain is full, but, I don't understand the "having to flip" vs "not having to flip" and how you know if you have to do this and if you do then how do you do it?

Still a little confused

I'm in the same boat as you - trying to learn all I can in a short period of time! :rotfl: my brain is so overloaded right now!

I'm going to head out at lunch today and look for the dark Avery transfers.

I've used Wilton's and Avery's both are "OK" if you plan on wearing them once or twice ... Both are stiff and will crack after just a few washes.

I've found that Amy's are softer and with care last quite a bit. I've heard some folks even able to use the shirts for multiple trips.

As for reversing the Image most transfers require you to invert the image so that when its ironed on it can be read correctly (my guess is it's because of which side the adhesive is on). Amy's don't require this step. She even goes as far as to send very detailed (simplified) instructions with her orders. I'd recommend Amy's.

Sorry for the late response.

The answer is simply "It depends on which brand transfer you're using"
I have used Avery's on Laser Jets and even used them @ FedEx Kinkos' huge Industrial Laser Printers with Success. The Wilton transfer's have a plastic feel and there always the possibility of them jamming/melting (Especially In the Industrial Printers I mentioned)

I use Avery brand from WalMart and it works great.

I would have to agree. To me they are the same quality as Amy's. And cost about the same in the long run.

I'm looking for a design program. I have a Mac so Photo Impact won't work I guess (needs Windows). I'm looking into Photoshop, but the original post lists it as costing $500....the ones I'm looking at cost a lot less. Has the price come down, or am I looking at the wrong thing? Which version of Photoshop should I be looking at?

There is a free program call GIMP here's a link to ithttp://www.gimp.org/ I don't use it my self, but i have a friend that does and he really likes it. He says its a lot like photoshop. I use Photoshop cs4 and really like it. I got it about 3-4 months ago and have learned everything i currently know on the fly. Looking at tutorials on the web. It's fairly easy to use and they offer a 30 day free trial download for it.

Hope this helps

Can someone please help? How do you make colored tshirt with an iron on that has words that you can't really cut out...if you don't cut them then you have all white around it...if you use transfer paper for white shirts then the white in the design doesn't show up...I'm confused! Is there some kind of special paper you have to buy?
thanks for any help!!!

Hello, its me again. What design is it your having trouble with? Is it something that I can change the color of the font or use different graphics on? I assume your having the issue with some white lettering and using light transfer paper will make your words transparent?

I really love the design and don't want to change it :( It is the Kaitlyn lettering with the princesses...do I have to cut out each letter? There must be some other type of transfer paper out there that will just print whatever ink is put on the transfer and not all the background white.

You have a few options

1) Use a light, but colored shirt, i.e. light pink or light blue and use the light transfers. The space between your letters will be the color of the shirt. You will need to change the white in the design to "off white." It doesn't even have to be noticeable to the naked eye. Just enough to make the printer know it has to print a color -- of course the lighter the printing, the more the color of the shirt will show through.

2) Cut out each letter and place on the shirt (I personally cannot manage to keep everything in alignment to iron this on and make it look professional)

3) In Powepoint, you can add an oval or circle around your design, choose from mulitple borders, color the border any color you choose and then fill the design with a color pattern. You can choose 1 color, 2 color or a pre-set color design. Set the transparency of the fill to your liking. I usually go about 84-80% transparency. Save the slide as a photo or jpeg file. If you want to resize it from there, you can copy the jpeg file into Word to resize before printing.

The issue is that dark transfer paper is white so that the shirt color doesn't drown out your print. If it were clear, your print would most likely not show up on your dark shirt.

Photoshop Elements7 runs about $79 and is a scaled down version of Photoshop CS4.

It is a great program and will work on a MAC!!

Good Luck!
