Riddle of the Day: Why does Mel cross the road?
To get to the shade on the other side!
Yesterday was awful! Between my lingering cold and the heat/humidity, it was my worst 'run' ever. My route is all sunshine, all the time, but if I cross the 4-lane road, it's shaded. Next time, I'm crossin' the road!
I did 4 miles, W4/R1, and actually had to talk myself through the minute runs. I gave up at 40 min on the intervals when I noticed my HR on the Garmin was in the 170s (I'm usually in the 140s). Taking Sudafed before I went out was probably not my best idea :earseek: , but I thought being able to breathe would help  . All that being said, it was my best pace outside of a race! Since starting the MFM program 4 weeks ago, I've shaved a minute off my pace. I did the 4 miles in 1:02:29, would've been under an hour if I'd been able to keep the intervals up the whole time. I'm looking forward to trying the 4 miles again this week!
Krista....woohoo! :cheer2:  What a fabulous time! Congratulations! I'll be watching you fly by at the half!
Nancy...I'll add your bear to the wildlife list ;) . How was Cypress Gardens? I haven't been since they reopened.
Sunny...glad to see you and your long run have reconciled  Now if you could just whip that IC into shape ;)
MelR...what kind of doc is your DH?
Christa...I don't think I'll be participating in any races that require displaying my weight...unless I could liberally ummm....embellish the truth :rolleyes1
Minnie, Liz...didya sign up yet?
Good training everyone!
Good Morning All;
Ugh, I don't know about where you all are, but here in the northeast, the humidity today is unreal! :earseek: ...Again!
Ran a 5k this a.m. It was fun, real easy, flat course. I made it in 28:42, or something close to that. Not too bad for a first time, I guess. I've gotta do more of these to see how my body holds up when I push myself harder than the normal training pace. MfM doesn't include hill training or speed work. I've heard a lot of you guys talking about that stuff, where do you get your info from? Or do you make it up as you go along?!
It's almost time to start the official "training" for us 1/2 marathoners,(according to MfM), I can't wait. I'm a little nervous about this wole thing - that's putting it mildly!
Anyone have pain in their knee(s) right underneath the patella area? My right knees hurts a little @ the beginnin of a run, then subsides as I get going. However, when I'm done running, it doesn't really "hurt" when I walk & such, but if I push on a very small, specific area on my knee (leg has to be straight to find the spot), it hurts to touch & pressure. Any ideas?
Have a great week training everyone!!

Jody - That is a GREAT time. Congrats! :cool1:  :cheer2:  :cool1: Fun is the key! It is hot and humid in NC too. Yesterday it got to 101! :faint: :faint: I cannot say too much about hill and speed except that I do it. On hill, I just run up and down a hill several times. Speed is done on a track. Here is how I break it down in laps.
2 warm up
4 fast
1 recovery
2 fast then 1 recovery (repeat 2x)
1 fast then 1/2 or 1 recovery (repeat 4x)
2 cool down
That is how I do it for the most part if I am not doing just 800s. Hope that helps some. Just choose speed or hill and do it only once a week. Don't try both in 1 week. It is too hard on the body.
Just eating Oreos today. Happy training!

Christa- Uh, is that 6 miles? Am I reading that right? HOLY COW. Ok, I'll give something like that a shot. I can pare it down to 3 miles, right? :rotfl:

I've been lurking here for the last month or so reading your posts and gaining inspriration :flower: I finally decided it was time to de-lurk and say hello!
I am signed up for the 1/2 in January - have never done anything like this before and hope I am up for the challenge! I have read MFM and have been training on the TM at the gym for the last month. I am planning to walk but still holding out hope that I may be able to walk/run by that time. Yesterday I did 4 miles in 60:23 on the TM which was my PR. I guess the question is can I really do that for 13 miles?????
Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say hello and that I hope to get to know you all better by January!

Well I decided to do it...I have officially signed up for the GOOFY! My wife (Beckie) is the sane one; she is staying with the full only. So the signup sheet should show "Paul-Goofy, Beckie-Full"
Yesterday I did 16 miles in 3:20. Could have finished faster, but my wife was not feeling very good. She only (only being relative I suppose) did 14. We did the last 7 miles with a run 1/4 mile, walk 1 minute. That pace is still fast enough to keep the sweeper bus far away from us. Absolutely perfect conditions. Started at 6 am, and the clouds kept the sun hidden for the entire time! I am going to run a half marathon either the first or second week in September. It will be nice to get an official time that I can turn in when I pick up my race packet. Up until now, I have been having to guess what my anticipated finish times will be (using the pace calculator of course!). I am excited to run one for real.
I am thinking about the Trails End dinner, but I do not have finalized travel plans yet. I know that I have to finalize travel plans soon! Beckie most likely will be unable to make it because she won't arrive until Saturday afternoon.
A reminder to everyone who has not registered yet...the website for the marathon says it is more than 82.5% capacity. GET OUT THERE AND SIGN UP!
Happy training to everyone. If you have the injury bug, remember to RICE (rest ice compression elevation) it now before it gets worse.

It ends up being like 6.5 but you can do what ever you want. A mile may be too much for speed drills @ first. Work up to it. Our Goofy group has been doing these for a while. Good luck! :teeth:
Paul - Welcome to the Goofy Group! :earseek: There are several of us crazy enough to do this with you! Good luck with training. :wizard: How are you planning to train for the Goofy?
Later all!

Hey everyone,
We just got back from camping for the weekend in the Pocono's. We had a great time. We hiked several miles and we also walked across this area called Boulder field. Its a huge field with nothing but boulders everywhere. They range in size from tiny to huge. It was really a workout and probably ended up being a mile by the time you went out and back. It was a great workout because you really had to use your core to keep yourself from slipping and falling. It was actually pretty scary!!
http://www.nps.gov/nero/nnl/1hickoryrun.jpg
Its definately getting time to start our "official" marathon training. I'm getting excited. Now I just got to figure out where to stay this year and how long I want to do it. I just found out my mom isn't going with me now so I'm back to being solo!
You all that are doing the "goofy" challenge- My hats off to you!! :cheer2:

Hi Everyone!
Well tomorrow is offically 20 weeks out from the race! Time to start the MFM program!! I'm excited to officially get into training mode though my distance will be the same as I've been doing for a while. I am adding a 4th run day in which will make things interesting as I've always run 3 days a week--even training for last years half.
My run days will be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Cross training on Tuesday and Friday and Rest (yeah!) on Sunday. Who else is starting tomorrow??

Who else is starting tomorrow??
I officially started today so I could run my long runs on Fridays. DH will do his long runs on Saturday. I did my 40 minutes of run, I got in a little over 4 miles. We will see what happens when I crank it up in a few days.
Melanie, oh my now that is a boulder field, what a workout!
I am sure I would twist my ankle.
Christa, ahh Oreos...my kids made me buy Klondike Oreo ice cream sandwiches yesterday. Yum. That is quite the speed workout you do. What distance did you do when you first started? It must be nice training with a group. :grouphug:
Paul, wow, 16 miles that is great!
akasleepingbeauty, welcome! You are already up to walking 60 minutes! Well you are well on your way! You will do great!
Jodi, that is an awesome 5K time! Especially for your first one. Next one will be even faster. Wasn't it a great feeling!
Mel, how does the heart rate monitor on the Garmin work? Do you have to have one of those straps around your chest? My husband has one of those Polar things and I tried to wear it around my chest, but my sports bra kept getting in the way and it kept losing my pulse.

Morning all - well as it's Monday lunchtime here now, it's officially my first day of training so I'm booked in for a 10k run tonight (I tried to get away with the 5k I'm supposed to do but running buddy just laughed at me!!). I've got my little eyeore notebook to write down how long I'm supposed to do versus how long I do do, plus what I've eaten and all sorts of other exciting things which I'm sure will come to me later.
Ailment of the week for me is that I seem to have developed acid reflux (how, what, why!) which makes for some lovely coughing and wheezing. Am living on Gaviscon at the moment and hoping that eating only about half of what I want to eat will help me get rid of the problem - and maybe the last 3 of the 13 kilos I seemed to get when I moved here.
I did have lots of things to say re last week, but didn't write them down so have forgotten everything - except the runway run joke which made me laugh mightly (and then wheeze a lot). Anyway, lunchbreak over for me, so good luck all those who are starting today. Just 80 runs to go until the big one.....Helen

Hi all-looks like everyone is doing great on their training. Mine is going pretty good. I'm having trouble with the friction on the bottom of my feet. The thin socks I love are too thin for my shoes. I guess I need to go get some body glide. Does that stuff feel gooey on your feet?
akasleepingbeauty-I have never done anything like this before either. I have never entered any kind of race. Right now my plan is to walk, but maybe half way thru the training I might try walk/run. Keep up the training, if I can do it anyone can.
chimera- Sudafed can really increase your blood pressure. Be careful with that & the heat/humidity.
Christa-what a workout! I may cut that in half & try it next week. I want to make sure I stay ahead of the sweepers. Right now that is my only goal!
Have a great week guys. Work hard, be careful.

Welcome Rhonda! Don't worry, you'll be great! Your pace is in the same neighborhood as mine right now and there's still 4.5 months to train! Have you tried using the pacing calculator? 4 miles in under 1 hour translates to not getting swept in the half!
Tiff...yeah, I know better. But I just wanted to breathe! There was talk when Liz and Lily did their half about glide or Vaseline on the feet. Anyone recall what the advice was?
Helen...is it cold there now? Can we all come live with you for a couple months til it cools off here? :teeth:
Colleen...the Garmin HR monitor is a chest strap that syncs up to the GPS wrist device. You don't have to wear the HR monitor to use the GPS. It drives me crazy, so I don't wear it often, but the Garmin says it will automatically design target HR for you if you get some max workouts in. I found some chafing spots after yesterday's excursion, so doubt I'll wear it again for awhile.
Kelly...congrats on starting tomorrow! Makes it seem more real ::MickeyMo
Melanie...cool rock garden ya got there ;)
Paul...you're now Goofy...wtg! :cheer2: Is Beckie doing the half with you in a couple weeks? Good luck to you (or both of you)! Be sure to let us know how it goes!
Jodi...wtg on your 5K! :cheer2:  Great pace!

Happy Monday!
It's a happy one for me just finished my long run of 9 miles doing 4R/1W @ 12:30 pace. I was hoping to go a little faster but I couldn't pull it off. I used my new Camelback water pack for the first time. I really liked it vs my old fanny pack water bottle holder.
I did finally get MFM and am reading it now.
Jodi- Was that the Windsor 5K you did? Good job. Hope your knee is better. You might want to get it checked out soon to prevent any damage.
Paul-Glad you're Goofy, too!
Rhonda- You can do it!
Melanie-Sorry your mother won't be going.
TiffJ-BodyGlide doesn't feel too gooey just a little slippery. I haven't used it on my feet though I do use runs as a chance for heavy moisturization with Avon Moisture Therapy lotion. I've yet to get a blister.
Take care,
Kiena

Yikes!!!! No longer training to train. Official training starts today!
Saturday was not a great run, but it was consistent. I did 10:41, 10:39, and 10:40. Then, the last mile was fairly fast, but that's fairly normal. I was just tired of dying in the middle.
Rhonda - Welcome!
Krista - Great job Saturday!
Paul - GOing for th eGoofy! WTG!
Mel - Hang in there with the cold thing you've got going on! Din't over do it!
I ate WAY too much this wekend, bt it's not sushi belly. Steak, crab meat, salmon, chocolate mousse. Yummy. Going to have to do a little better now that it's officially "training time", though!
Have a great week everyone!

Welcome, Rhonda  So glad you joined us!
Jodi-- great time! I hope your knee is a temporary thing and nothing to worry about.
Mel-- get better. Rest and recoop. I hope you feel better real soon. Heat and humidity = worst run ever even without a cold!
Sunny - With all of the weight you have lost and new toned buff bod, it looks like you would love to write you weight on your calf! What does your Dx do? Is he an MD?
OMG, No!!! only the arms are getting towards buff!! The rest of the bod is still hiding behind a "pardon our appearance while we renovate" sign :rotfl: Dx works for a local town, on call means he gets crews out if there is a water break, tree down, etc. You got the boy to go 20 miles! WOW! I'm impressed.
Well I considered last week my first week of official training. I guess I miss-counted. I thought last week was week 20 :confused3 Oh well, I did everything I set out to do except speed work. I found a great place to do hill work over the weekend, but its doubtful I can get out there very often.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say thanks again for everyone's support and wish you luck. Kevin is still running the half, but I have just been so busy. I have just started my own business and just don't think I will have the time to train. I have switched my registration over to the 5K instead, just to keep in shape and help support Kevin. So I will be there cheering everyone on at the finish line!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Happy Monday everyone! :flower: I did 14 miles on the bike yesterday. I am really enjoying cycling. My riding partner will be out of town next weekend so we'll see if I am as motivated to ride alone. Went to the gym this morning and did 2.5 miles. I am still able to keep up the pace running 3 and walking 2. Tomorrow will be cross-training so back on the bike. :moped:
Howdy to Rhonda from a fellow Texan!
We leave for Disney World in 10 days!  The girls still know nothing about the trip! Shh! I can't wait to hear about Cam's girls only trip. I hope it wasn't too wild. ;)
Hey Minnie, where are you?! :confused3

Amanda - I'm so glad you stopped by for an update. I have been wondering about you. I checked your blog page last night just to get the scoop! Good luck with your business.
Mel - I hope your cold gets better!
Sunny - Well, guess what... I missed my long run this weekend becuase my Dh was on call and my partner was sick! Every time I got a chance to go, Phil would get called in! I finally got the chance to run this weekend and it was at 10p last night. I, needless to say, did not go. I would have had to stay in my neighborhood, which is .45 miles! I just could not stomach the idea of doing over 20 laps and getting to bed at midnight! At least I got the bike ride in! I am training for a century ride in October. I have no schedule though! I really need Lisa's advice on how to raise the $ I need for the ride. It is for the Am. Diabetes Assn. I am acually considering walking around the block to ask neighbors for donations of pocket change! It can't hurt!
WISHers from Michigan - Is anyone running the Crim this weekend? It is in Flint, MI? That is actually my dh's home and we are flying up this weekend! Maybe I'll get to meet a wisher! I am going to run it with my sis-in-law! I am trying to get her to sign up for the disney half!
Christa - I did the Ozark valley Tri in June. I was a 1000yd sm, 19mi bike, and 4 mile run! I finished (It was my first), but my time was not that great! I hope to do better next year. I did good on the ride and terrible on the run! go figure. I didn't care how i did on the swim, i just did it. I was also really slow on transitions. That cost me big. I thought that the trans. would be no prob becuase we do them all of the time with adventure race, but they are a little more accelerated in the tri. During the adventure race, i usually refill everyone's water, get them snacks, use the bathroom and even sit for a little if the navigator (dh) is plotting out the course!
Whew... I need to run off some of this chattiness!!!!!

I have been in and out of the weekly threads but have enjoyed reading about everyone's progress. You all are doing great. I haven't been as committed as I need to be but this is the week. I started exercising again this morning and it is for good this time. I have made up my mind and there will be no changing. I look forward to the upcoming weeks as we all prepare for the Marathon.

I have been bitten by the bug--I've spent all morning looking for local 5K's I can do!! The next one we have scheduled is Sept. 16 and I don't think I can wait that long. :rotfl: I just found a 10K on Thanksgiving Day that's in Downtown Cincinnati, I think that would be perfect so I don't go into shock trying to transition from running a race that's 3.1 miles and going to one that's 13.1 miles!!
I start the MFM walk/run program today, I'm doing the first 6 weeks of that which will bring me to Oct. 3, which is 14 weeks out from the half and then I start the MFM run/walk. I'm secretly hoping to be able to train for the run program, but we'll see.
Mel--sorry about the Buc's loss this weekend. Steelers won, but it was so ugly (and boring) that I didn't consider it much of a victory. What's up with Ricky Williams? He looks like a terrorist.
Amanda--good luck in starting your own business! I would love to own a party planning business, maybe someday. Sorry you aren't able to do the half, but I'll be looking for you in the crowds.
Heather--can I hide in your suitcase? I'll return the favor for you when Stephen and I go to WDW in 61 days--not that I'm counting or anything. :hourglass
Jodi--awesome 5K time!! :cheer2:  :cheer2: I'm jealous!! :teeth:

Krista- Great idea. I think I'm going to do the first half of the walk/run program and then try the run/walk or possibly the run when the actual 14 week program starts. I've been wanting to start and then restart when the time actually started. I've ben toying with the idea of running only but I need to build up my base again.
I was able to do a 2 mile walk at lunch though. So at least I'm getting moving again.

Hi, everyone! WOW!! You guys all start your training this week. Geez, that really drives home a point, doesn't it? I am so glad that I am still training to train, but I absolutely HAVE to find time to do it. Last week was a disaster, and I am in such a busy time of year as far as my evenings and Saturdays because of DDalmost17's colorguard and DS12's soon-to-be cross country season. Hoping to find a way to make all that work for me.
Of course, first I will have to recover from this weekend!
We leave for Disney World in 10 days!  The girls still know nothing about the trip! Shh! I can't wait to hear about Cam's girls only trip. I hope it wasn't too wild. ;)
Thanks, Heather! There really are no words to describe the amazing time we had, though I seem to have taken up a page or two in my WISH journal going on and on about it! :rotfl2: You can read all about it at post #539 of my journal, if you are so inclined! Cam's journal entry about amazing WDW weekend! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=720698&page=36&pp=15)
Suffice it to say I'd like to think I burned a million calories using all those muscles to smile and laugh like a child. :teeth: And, as I stood in front of the castle watching WISHES and hearing my friend, Judy, crying with joy at what she called a "spiritual experience", all I could think about was how amazing the experience is going to be in January, wogging through the Magic Kingdom and enjoying the whole race weekend experience!
You are all really inspring me to buckle down to a lot of the things I need to focus on including core strengthening and all sorts of abdominal work. KeenHo is already working like crazy so hopefully, his motivation will rub off on me. :goodvibes
Back later to read more here. Have a great night, all. I am still catching up at work, etc. from one day off! :confused3

I just realized that it has been several months since I've last posted! Since then, both my husband and I have decided to do the Goofy instead of our original half only. We both completed our first ever half marathon on August 6th, and then spent the past 10 days in WDW! It's kinda scary to think about the huge step we've taken in signing up for the Goofy, but I'm determined to do it. I still remember how much my thighs hurt for 2 days after the recent half! I think I'd better incorporate more squats or something in preparation for the next one! Any other pointers? Since I've only been running since January, 2005, I'm planning on walking the half and run/walk the full. Happy training to all!

Heather - Thanks for thinking of me. I'v been lurking but since I've kept my lazy but on the couch rather than out on the road I haven't posted.
Finally this evening the weather cooled down and I made myself get back out on the road for a 2 mile wog (12 min miles). My DS had middle school orientation so I didn't get out till late but at least I got out there.
Mel - No I still haven't registered. From the numbers that have been posted I will likely get locked out of registration. Since I have yet to make a wog past 4 miles I just can't make myself register. I can make it under the required pace but haven't been able to get in the mileage. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point.
Hope everyone is doing well! My new job has kept me MIA for awhile but I hope to catch up soon.

Good morning!! :sunny: I started the MFM walk/run program last night, I did it for 32 minutes (walk 3, run 1) and I was able to wog 2.52 miles. I had a faster pace last night than I did for the 5K on Saturday! I had to laugh when I looked at my training schedule, my "long" wog for this week is 2 miles. I'm not sure if I should bump that up or just enjoy the break.
Question for you guys, Stephen (my husband) hasn't been able to run for like a week and a half because we think he has runner's knee. It's a sharp pain all around his knee that he gets when he runs or walks too fast. It's caused by overtraining (which he his guilty of) and another cause is running on the shoulder of the street when one side is higher than the other--which he does when cars are coming at him. So my question is: what can he do to strengthen his knee and the muscles surrounding it? Does anyone have any advice? He has leg weights that he uses every other day and the ever famous pool running and resting, but is there anything else? Is this something that he needs to see a doctor or a trainer about? Or is the only "cure" rest? I'd appreciate it if someone has some insight, he's driving me crazy!!! :teeth:

Speaking of those of us from MI, Anyone heard from Solotraveler since he got back from Jordan?
I'm back!!!! :)
Sorry I've been gone so long. After my trip I came down with a stomach bug that kind of derailed training for a while and then it's the time of year when work gets really really crazy, so I've been very neglectful of my posting. :guilty:
I officially started the MFM Run/Walk training plan on Sunday (to allow myself to run long on Fridays). So far so good with my two 35 minute sessions Sunday and Monday and I'm looking forward to my crosstraining day today. I hit the cross country trail at work yesterday and that was great-- felt good to do something different and get off the road.
Minnie- 12 minute miles? You're golden, go ahead and register! It's 91% full already! :sunny:
Mel- Not doing the Crim here. I have to work :( an 18 hour day
Did anyone notice that the official WDW marathon site now has sweep points and times listed on it?

Great to see MelanieC, TammyNC, Penny, and Minnie back on the site. Keep moving ladies! We can do this! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
Cam-I am glad you had a great trip. I have got to plan one of those girlfriend weekends. That sounds like so much fun.
Carrie- Hmm, I would definitely let you stow away in my suitcase if I had any room in there. ;)
Today I did 7 miles on the bike at the gym. Boring! After biking outside for the past few weeks, returning to the stationary bike was not a stimulating experience <yawn>. Oh well, at least there was no risk of falling or getting hit by a car.

Wow, more than 91% full. This is really the last chance for those who are thinking about registering. Minnie...you can do it!! :cheer2:
My DH is thinking about running the full with me, but I just don't know if he would be a help or a hinderance. We never run together, he runs a sub 3:30 marathon, so he will have no problem keeping up. ;) (I am hoping for under 5 hours.) I get thinking that after 15 or 20 miles, it would be nice to have him there. If he did run we would have to hire a Fairy Godmother to watch our kids from 3 a.m. until noon at $14 /hour. I just don't know. Any suggestions? Is anyone else bringing their kids and what plans do you have?
I did my first cross training yesterday. Resistance training, arms, squats, lunges, crunches. Gee was I sleepy after doing that. Feel good today though.
Happy training.

Solo and Carrie - Bummer! I was hoping to meet some of you guys there. I am taking a camera on the course so I post pics when I get back.
Heather - I love biking as well!!! Have I mentioned that before :rotfl: ?
I think riding on the stationary bike is actually way worse than running on a treadmill. Not only are you stuck in the same place, but you don't have the joy of the wind and you can't lean into the turns! The worst is to put you bike (which of course you have developed a love relationship with) on the trainer. You feel stuck and I think your bike feels betrayed. I get confused too because the shifting is the exact opposite on the trainer. When I get on the road it really messes me up!
Made up for my missed long run last night. I ran around the block (i think a total of 18 times) to run 8 miles. The neighbors are sure I am insane now!
Have a great training day everyone!

:rotfl2: In the book "I Run therefore I am Nuts", Bob Swartz describes having his family members line up with cups of water in the driveway so he could practice drinking on the run. I suppose neighbors just don't get it!
All this talk of biking just might sway me to get a bike. I haven't been on a real bike since I was about 22. I love roller-blading, but for the past year anytime I have a chance to get out, I'd rather run. Maybe when DS is a bit older we will roller blade together.
I did 6.4 miles on the TM yesterday. I did a few 'bursts" at 7.5 mph but most of it was 6.7. My schedule keeps getting rearranged outside of my control  Today I won't be able to go to the gym afterwork, so I guess it will be TaeBo. I'm going to the gym now to reduce my butt to jello (oh, that's right, it already is jello). Look out squats, here I come!

Thank you ALL so very much for the warm welcome! I am so glad that this group is here as I know I will be needing the encouragement along the way as well as on the big day and hopefully I will be able to provide some for others as well.
I am off to the gym today for my cross-training day - will do weight training and a bit of time on the stair machine (ugh!). Sure wish my gym offered a pilates class more than one day a week as I love doing that for cross-training.
Cam - I wanted to say hi - we met way back when on the Magic in 5/01. Your family is so nice - we really enjoyed watching your kids having a great time on the catamaran snorkel trip we took in St. Maarten. I am so impressed by your new dedication to healthy living - you should be very proud of the example you are setting for many of us!
Chimera - I am working hard to keep that ~15 min mile pace so that I won't be swept. I really feel I can do the miles but wonder if I can do them fast enough over the whole course. I guess I will just keep on working at it - thank goodness we still have 4 months to go!!
Well, no more procrastinating - time to get out of the house and over to the gym. Hope everyone has a fantastic and healthy day!!

Minnie- You can do this- Sign up!! It is such an amazing accomplishment when you cross that line. It was literally life changing for me. I will never forget that moment last year!!
Hey all- Do we have a group rate at some hotels this year? I'm not sure where I want to stay. I had been waiting on my mom to figure out where we wanted to stay, but now that I know she isn't going with me I better figure out where I want to be. I'm thinking I may come in on Thursday and leave on Monday. If I come in on Friday I think it may be too tight to get my packet and meet everyone for dinner at Trails End.

Hey there! Disney has put up some more information about the process for those going Goofy. It's here (http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/marathon/events/detail?name=Goofy'sRaceHalfChallenge2006Preparingf orRaceDayEventDetailPage)
Looks like they're using wristbands to keep track of us. All I can say is they'd better be comfy and soft. I don't want some paper thing chafing at me the whole weekend!!!
Day 2 of training today with free weights. I hate free weights. I don't have very good coordination with them and inevitably end up dropping one on my foot or hitting myself in the head with one. Not cool at all.
Happy training everybody! If you're on the fence about signing up, get off the fence and sign up. You can always change your mind later and decide not to do it (and only be out some $$$), but once it's full you can't change your mind!!!

Krista princess:
Last season--alot of our runners (my team in training team) ended up wearing knee straps to hold the kneecap in place. It prevented unnecessary friction. He might wish to see a doctor/PT--I'm afraid that with a knee--and all the possibilities on how to fix it or hurt it more, it would be in his better interest to get professional assistance as well as proper "brace/strap" fitting for his particular condition.
He probably needs to slow it down a notch.

Hi, Rhonda! How nice to hear from you! You have an amazing memory. I am so impressed. If my "notes" are correct, I think you had a DD15 and DS1 back then, right? That catamaran experience was amazing, wasn't it? Although I definitely could have done without seeing those nude sunbathers from that private boat docked on our "uninhabited island"! ;) Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words. Don't feel bad about thinking you booked too early, we booked our flight over a month ago because Delta had a decent rate and the times we liked for our flight. We actually have a trip the end of Nov/Dec to take before the marathon weekend. The kids and myself are flying down on Wednesday, DH is flying down on Friday and then we all are flying back on Sunday.

Rhonda, I am at the same pace as you are, I haven't tried more than 4 miles yet, but was able to walk it in 1 hour on a pretty warm day. I am concerned about training in November and December here in Connecticut, I don't want to buy a treadmill, so I'm hoping that we don't get much snow early on. Where are you all staying? Did you book a package through Disney Sports? Does anyone know how they go about picking you up from the resortsthat morning, I really don't want to get picked up at 2:30 a.m.

Just an FYI for those of you flying out of RDU to MCO. I booked my trip leaving 1/4 returning 1/8 for $116.20 RT.
Carrie - Happy Birthday!!!!!
Krista - I think maybe your husband's got what I've got "runner's knee" is right! Do a general search on yahoo & a few good websites pop up about how to treat it. Basically it's RICE. Ugh, I am sooooo aggrevated!! Everytime I get into a cool funk, something comes up. Usually it's shin splints, but yay, this time it's something different.
I suppose I ran too far last weekend & wasn't ready for the 10 miles. Apparently when you jump up to quickly in mileage, you can get this stupid ailment! Dang it.
The only good thing is is that it's still kinda far out from the 1/2. I just hate losing any ground that I've gained. I'm kinda addicted, & now I"ve got to stop.
Someone mentioned that they knew people who would wear those bands around their knees, did they work good? Sorry, I'm too lazy & frustrated to go back & look who you were.
Well, that's it, sidelined for at least a week.

It worked for me--but I don't think I had true runner's knee. I ran once and it felt like my knee cap was going to fall off. I got the strap and that went away.
Most on our team with the "runner's knee" were alleviated with strap--ITB issues were some resolved with strap and others resolved with rest or modified training plan (like a run/walk instead of a run).
That's why it is important to go ask a doctor for a specific diagnosis and a specific treatment and a specific brace/strap to prevent a future problem.
I don't want to tell you to do something and have it be the wrong thing.

Hi Team!
Sorry today too. Have been way to busy to do anything.
Will try better later.
Must say though
Lisa, what great news! You are inspiring him too.
kdiana, the busses start early, it is quite an event if you haven't been part of it I found it interesting to get there early as everyone was being bussed in all sleppy, and full of anticipation.
If you get a moment, I think there is a thread about where everyone is staying.
I think this will be the last time I try to push those who haven't registered as it will be closed out way soon.
Minnie too,
I cannot stress enough, YOU CAN DO THIS! There is time and if nothing else, pay your $ and consider it a contribution. ...But YOU CAN DO THIS! Really! You have to experience the mystery and awesomeness of this. I made it my first time ever half event. I wanted my virginity to be taken at the event. I didn't want to try other races first. I am so glad and it was such an emotional event I cannot describe. My pace was 15 min to do a mile. I did it ok fine with time to take pics. You can do this. Do not have self doubts. Do not put yourself in the way of defeat.
Pictures to help inspire you to register...you will miss out on all this if you don't sign up. (http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2134725456&code=17867358&mode=invite&DCMP=isc-email-AlbumInvite)
So, now that I am off the Hyde Park platform...on with your training everyone. I have been oh so busy, so now I am tired and off to sleep. I have not done anything since Saturday, so I feel badly about it, but I will get it going.

Lets see...Garmin on one wrist...heart-rate monitor on another wrist...Goofy wristband on another wrist...wait a minute...I ran out of wrists! :rotfl2: I wonder if the wristband is going to be coolmax?
The way that I am training for the Goofy is by placing my longest "maintenance run" the day after my long run. For example, this week I did 16 miles on Saturday and 50 minutes on Sunday. Essentially, I am doing 2 long runs on consecutive days. Then I take Monday off, do track/intervals on Tuesday and another maintenance run on either Wednesday or Thursday (depending on how I feel). Friday is always a rest day before the longest run on Saturday. If I am unusually sore or think that I might get injured again, I take an extra day off. Runners World had an article not too long ago about training for a marathon by running 3 days a week.
My training program is designed for a marathon in October, but I am not going to do the October marathon. I am going to do a half as a training run, and continue to build my weekly miles. The way I figure, the goal is to finish the half and the full. I plan on going slow and taking multiple walk breaks on race day. My PR from the Goofy will be that many miles in 2 days. I am not at all concerned about my time -- just as long as I finish the 1/2 in less than 3.5 hours and the full in less than 7. Oh yeah, I need to have enough energy for a week of visiting the parks afterward :earsboy: .
Does anyone have any advice on how to get my support staff around the world on marathon day? I plan on having my cell phone with me so I can provide location updates. Bree/Christa--your support seemed to be all over the place from what I remember from your report on the tricharlotte website. How did they pull that off? Any tips that the Disney Marathon veterans have would be appreciated.
Keep on training everyone, and register if you haven't already. You will regret not signing up once the races are full. Also, stay healthy! It is better to lose a week now than a month (or longer) later.

Wow-everyone has been really busy. Today is my rest day & I never thought it would actually happen to me but I want to walk today, not rest(although I know I need it so I dont get injured) I'm actually enjoying training. It is also keeping me eating healthy too.
Tiger Lily-just seeing those picutres got me even more excited! I cant wait to meet everyone & just enjoy all that weekend will have to offer.
Minnie-do it! Do it! Do it! You have a great base for your training & time to get up the milleage.
lizdotcom-good luck with the job situation. I know what it feels like to be stuck in a job you absolutely hate. Hope you are able to make it in January.
My mom said that after this race we need to keep it up & do others. I told her I wasn't interested in doing this kind of race any where else (location is most of my motivation) However, at the running store last night they had info on a bunch of races & I found another 1/2 marathon I would love to do. It's in Maui!! Problem is it's the week after WDW.

A little refresher for those of us who started here only recently:
MfM is Marathonign for Mortals by John Bingham, aka "The Penguin". It is a book for those of us who are not looking to be world champions, but want to do the marathons.
Here is his website:
Waddle On (http://www.waddleon.com)
Here's a quick blurb on him:
Once an overweight couch potato with a glut of bad habits, including smoking and drinking, at the age of 43 Bingham looked mid-life in the face--and started running. Since then, he has completed 40 marathons and hundreds of 5K and 10K races--and developed a whole new outlook.
The best place to find MfM is Amazon. The book has training plans for the full and the half marathons that many of us are following. They are for walk, walk/run. run/walk and run. Let us know if you have any more questions! (Forgive us if we discuss things that you're not familiar with and please do not hesitate to ask!)

Lily, thanks for the link to the pictures. Those are great. I love the mile marker signs too. Wow, look at all the people! Did you have trouble maneuvering around people?
Also, I think this has been discussed once before and I remember people saying that they went to the corrals too early. What time do they start herding people toward the corrals? What time would be a good time to actually go?
I just finished reading MFM the other day. It was a good read.

Lisa--yay for hubby!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:
Thanks everyone for the advice for Stephen. We're trying to self-diagnose him based on symptoms and what we've read in books and on different websites, but who knows, we may be way off and it could be something completely different. I've been telling him to go to the doctor's for a week, but you know men! :headache:
Nothing to report, today's my Mom's birthday and we celebrated last night, so no cross training for me. I'll have to do my pilates tonight when I get home from choir practice.
Happy training everyone!!

I don't know if anyone is arround this morning, but after those fantastic pictures from Lily and a whole lot of needed shall we say "rear kicking" from many others I am going to register. Will I be there in January? Who knows but at least it will be a possibility!
Anyways - I am trying to register online and it is asking for an approximate time and race that proves it. Well since this will be my first ever distance run what should I put???? I am guessing at a finish time around 2:30 which is approximately 12min miles. That is where my short distance efforts are at with out pushing too hard so hopefully I will be able to maintain it over time.
Anyways I can put down the time but without anything to back it up what will they do with me???? Anyone know?????
Thanks for all the help! I wouldn't be doing this without all of your support!

  Yay for MInnie!
There should be a note somewhere on the form that if you put a time of less than X, you need backup. For the full, I think it was 4 hours. SO, maybe that's 2 for the half?? I'd think 2.5 should be safe.

Last year--for the full only (not sure if half is inlcuded this year)---you can load up to maybe 5 cell phone numbers and as you cross checkpoints, they will get a text message that you crossed this marker at this time. You will need their cell phone carrier in addition of course to their phone number.
ETA: I want to say that an e-mail address was an option as well.
And then if you have more than 5 on your world-wide cheering team...one of them can be responsible for spreading the word.

Lily -- If I hadn't already registered for the half, looking at your awesome pix would have motivated me! I LOVE the Donald medal (I had resigned myself to being disappointed that it is not a Mickey, but Donald is really, really cute!) :teeth:
Liz -- :wizard: for getting to register in time! If not, I really, really hope you will be there to cheer all your WISH friends on. I know it would mean so much to all of us!
Good luck to Stephen on that knee. I had a run-in with a football player sized obnoxious teenager at the airport on Sunday who literally knocked me out of my sneakers and to the ground and my first thought was "if he hurt me so much that I can't train, I am going to press charges".
Lisa -- congrats on motivating DH! How wonderful that he is joining this party as a participant and not "just" a supporter!
Hi, Carrie! How are you doing, sweetie?
Wow, there is such an air of excitement on this thread these days! It is so great to hear how everyone is doing. Sadly, I have nothing to report, training-wise, but am glad to know that so far, I have 50+ less pounds to drag around those 13.1 miles come January. Hoping to be down another 10-15 by then.
Happy training, all!

Cam - You are a true inspiration! The changes that you have made in your life and your dedication are wonderful. So glad the run down in the airport didn't leave any damage that would effect training. I am gettin gmore and more parnoid now about being hurt. I can just see myself running in the snow the day before I leave for WDW and slipping and hurting myself. If I had room for a treadmill and thought I could do the miles without losing my mind, I htink I'd be getting one.
I'm pluggin along with my training, but I've been kind of sore lately, which is odd, because we have been on a downward taper.
The run the marathon program typically only gives me 1 day a week off. WIth the fact that I have been slackin gon my cross-traning, which I cannot do anymore, and adding another day. I'm afraid that my life will be nothing but working, running, sleeping, and laundry fro the next 20 weeks! I just need to get into the groove, though. Lily's pictures sure do help!
Enough whining. I've come this far and will make it!

Ya, Minnie! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
I accidentally ran 4 miles at lunchtime. I was late to work so technically, I should be working through lunch :rolleyes1 But it is soooo nice outside I decided to go for a little walk. I decided I should put on my sneakers so I don't hurt my feet, then I decided I might as well change into workout clothes so I don't get my work clothes sweaty. Then I remembered I had my Forerunner with me.... Well, have Forerunner MUST run!!!! So I did a gentle pace, because I plan to do an 8 miler after I take DS to jujitsu tonight. Hope that doesn't screw me up. I've ran twice in one day before and this first one was real light. The weather is perfect for running :sunny:

Carrie -- Thank you so much for your kind words! :) I know what you mean about training becoming all consuming. DH isn't working right now, so he is trying to get to the gym during the day, but when he is back to a fulltime work schedule, I don't know how he will have the time to do all the training he wants to do. As for me, I really have to figure out how to make time to do all the things I need to do, including core strengthening, weight training, hill training, etc., etc. Right now, my priority is to get to bed early enough to get up at 5:30 to wog a few times a week. I just can't get up that early when I get to sleep after 11. This is the craziest busy time of year for us because DD is captain of her colorguard and busy with senior year commitments. Carving out time to do what I need to do for my effort is something I need to make a priority now.
Sunny -- I am SOOOO JEALOUS!!!!! :teeth: I am looking out my window at work today and thinking I'd give anything to go out for a wog. It is so gorgeous and cool.
I realized this morning that my 14 week MFM walk the half program is so perfectly timed. Fall has always been my favorite time of year -- I feel very energized and motivated at this time of year. This morning, I felt a surge of enthusiasm and anticipation that was unexpected and welcome. Then I came here and saw Lily's pictures and truly felt a "spark". Right now, I am thinking about how exciting it will be to be training at Hilton Head DVC at Thanksgiving. Wogging to the Beach House will be a huge motivation for me. I am SOOOO excited :Pinkbounc
I am in awe of what everyone is doing on an everyday basis and how much everyone is accomplishing. Looking forward to having great things to report!

Just a quickie today...it's my last press day as an assistant editor, but I needed a break. Is it weird that I came here to look for JimMIA and see if he had a storm watch thread on the DVC board? :confused3
Congrats Minnie! :cheer2: Glad to see you took the plunge!
Cam...I'm with ya on working this into the kids' activities. I can't register for my next 5K until I get DD12's soccer schedule.
Had my first sub-16 min day on the TM. My outside pace is about 15:30 since I started the MFM training program, but haven't gotten in that neighborhood on the TM until today. Cross-trained at the Y yesterday...I forgot how much I enjoyed the circuit-training stuff. Looking forward to 4 miles on Fri...with our new friend, Tropical Storm Katrina, on the way, we may have enough cloud cover/rain to make it cooler for my Fri wog. Of course, that won't be good for the weekend...we're going for our first official DVC trip to celebrate DHs birthday. Guess we better pack the rain ponchos! :umbrella:

I've been around, but only reading, because I haven't really felt like I had anything clever to add to the conversation. Also classes start one week from today and I'm trying to get as many sessions as possible completed before the craziness begins.
Minnie
Congragulations on taking the big step. If you don't mind I would like to give you some very serious advice, and that is to be extremely aware of and careful with your pace. Being able to do 4 miles in 48 is a good start, and if carried the entire way you'll finish in 2:37. The danger is your body will do exactly what you train it to do. If your training up to the race stays at about that distance and that pace, on race day your body will run its usual pace and at the usual distance it will be ready to stop. If you ask for more your body and then mind will begin to play games with you, and if you continue your body will insist you stop, and then actually stop.
I know you've been following the training of many of the posters and you'll see the common thread is stretching the distance and slowing down the pace to make the desired distance. If your distance stretching is successful, you may find in early December you are able to go 12 miles at say 13 minutes per mile with no difficulty. In this case I'd say a 12 minute pace for the half is very attainable, and go for it. If you find your longer runs are coming in at a slower pace, use that information on race day to ensure you start and carry a pace you can hold for 13 miles. It is so satisfying to run every mile at about the same pace and feel great after. It's pretty depressing to go out too fast and get in trouble at the half way point, and then have to drop out. I've done both and the latter really stinks.
Good luck to you in your new adventure.
The running news at our house is encouraging. I've done some comfortable 7's and 8's in the past few weeks, and some quicker shorter runs, while biking and lifting. I should be around 11 for a long run by the end of September. My wife is about 2 months ahead of her training from last fall, doing 9.6 in last week's long effort and shooting for 10 tonight.
I'm still wondering about my sanity with Goofy, however. The day after long efforts I'm pretty stiff and sore all morning. I cannot imagine how I will feel at 6 a.m. on January 8 after 13.1 the day before. In November and December I'll do a couple of back-to-backs, maybe 11 on Saturday a.m. and then 5 on Sunday a.m. Hopefully this will teach me a lot about what the full will be like.
Cheers

Thanks Carrie
You guys were a big help to me in February when someone here found out what the new course for the half looked like. I loved the old half course so much that I was very anxious to find out what I'd be running in 2006.
Martha is doing the half again this year, hoping to crack 2:30. Given her 2:33 result in her first ever half this year, and her excellent training, I suspect she'll shatter that mark. I have strongly encouraged her to sleep late the day of the full and pick up what's left of me at the finish. Unfortunately she refuses to do this and will be at the start to support me, or perhaps make sure I find my starting corral given the fog in my brain and lactic acid in my legs.

First off thank you all for your support!!!!!!!!!!!
Craig - Any and all advise is appreciated. I hope for arround 2:30 put will be thrilled to simply finish and not get swept :goodvibes. If I push hard I can do a 10min mile but I can't hold it for any length of time but the 12 min feels pretty good. I'm following the Jeff Galloway 1/2 marathon schedule that incorporates walk breaks so the 12min seems to work so far. Though as the mileage increases I have no doubt that my time will go up I just hope to keep it arround the 12-13 minute range by January.
Christa - I'm registered for the 1/2 marathon.
Lily - Your pictures are quite simply and insparation to this couch potato. I'm really not sure that I would have gone ahead and registered had I not seen them. I was considering trying for a different one instead but your pictures clenched it for me.
I got my rear off the couch again tonight and out on the road. My planned 2 miles was stretched into 3 miles. I'm really sore right now though. Please someone give me a kick in the hinny if I start going on about my schedule being to bad to get out on the road. These last 2 weeks of little to no trainig have made this week really ouchy!

One thing you don't have to worry about is getting swept. The mathematics are very stark. Suppose you are confident you can carry 12:30 per mile, and run it on January 7. At mile 5 you will be 17.5 minutes ahead of the broom truck, say 1.4 miles. At mile 10 you're 35 minutes ahead of the broom, nearly 3 miles. You don't have any worries there.
Just run a comfortable pace, one that is an effort, but can be sustained. That will ensure you'll finish, and after a few minutes to recover, with a big smile on your face. Enough to bring you back in 2007.
Another reassurance is where you will finish at a pace like that. In this year's race my novice/rookie wife was worried about her place, and I told her she would finish in the top half of the field. She commented I was crazy, etc. So, she comes in at 11:42 per mile, placing her about 3700 of 8600 finishers in the 2005 half. If you're around 12 minutes per mile, you'll also be in the top half, another reason to forget about the broom truck.

lesson learned -- do not take more than a week off from wogging (and a weekend in WDW, inclluding 2 late nights and an all night binge at Adventurers' Club) and expect to get right back in to the routine! :teeth:
Did a 15 min mile on the elliptical trainer, 7 miles in 20 minutes on the stationary bike, and then went wogging. Poor Howard wanted to "be with me" and was subjected to my 5 min warm up, then 1 min jogging, 4 min walking through 31 minutes (6 "jogging" intervals). Poor guy was practically walking! My legs are SOOOO short! :) But I did 2.02 miles in 31:00, so that is a solid 15:30 pace. Not bad for taking so much time off. I am going to get back into a routine now, though.
Hope everyone else took advantage of what seemed like a pretty mild day in most parts of the country. Good night all! Going to sleep soon with visions of Lily's Donald medal and all those awesome "we won't be swept" tee shirts in my dreams! :rotfl:

Hi everyone,
I managed to get in a 2 mile walk/run at lunch today at the park. I couldn't do too much running because I didn't want to get sweaty. I need to start taking some clothes to change into. I also did half of a FIRM video tonight. Just getting back into the swing of things, and I was huffing and puffing from the FIRM, lol. I guess when you've been off for a few months, it takes some getting used to again. I did feel some twinges in my right foot still...UGGH! It doesn't hurt now at all so hopefully that will go away when my foot gets used to the step moves and the squats with weights. I even managed to get 15 toe push ups in tonight. I feel good. I just need to get into a routine and somehow figure out how to motivate myself to get up at 5am again. I'll give my self a week or so of getting back into consistant exercise before attempting that. One thing at a time.
Minnie- Congrats to signing up! Woo hoo!!
Also to all those who are doing this for the first time and aren't sure of themselves. I remember last year when I too was worried about being swept. Then all the sudden we rounded a corner and there were people as far as the eye could see. I thought they were people in front of us, but everyone was saying they were behind us. From that point on, it was a whole new race for me. I wasn't very fast last year. I finished in about 3 hours 19 minutes, but I was no where NEAR last!! I did my next 1/2 marathon 4 months later and finished that one in 2:59:59 seconds......seriously 1 second from 3 hours, lol!! The point is, try not to worry too much because you'll see all kinds of people out there running the race. People who were really old, really young, really short, really tall, really heavy, really skinny-Everything imaginable. All my fears of being the very last person were taken away when I realized it wasn't just perfect runners (although they were there-at the front of the pack, lol!). Once I let go of all that I really enjoyed the race. I go into this race with new confidence in myself because I know what it feels like to cross that finish line. I almost chickened out last year and didn't go. I'm so glad I did. Nothing will ever compare to crossing the finish line and getting my medal. I took away a sense of what can I accomplish next. 2005 turned out to be a great year for me. I also got to see the space shuttle launch which has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I honestly think that doing the race last year has opened doors for me and I now look for things to accomplish that I have always wanted to do or see. Instead of fearing failure, I look forward to new accomplishments. The world is such an amazing place and it awaits us all!
Sorry that got so long.

Melanie-thanks for posting that. I am very excited about this but also very nervous. I am afraid that no matter how well I train I will get swept. I dont care if I'm the last person who crosses the line (although from what it sounds like I shouldn't be) I just dont want to put all this into it & get swept at mile 10.

Craig- Thanks for the inspirational math lesson. I'm hoping to be in the top half (just barely).
I haven't been able to do any activity since my 9 miles on Monday. I was feeling so good after my early morning run that I took a mental health day from work and drove to the beach. I completely covered my kids and myself (I thought) with SPF 50 as we're all very fair. I even did touch ups.
Well, I missed a 6-8" section of my upper back and haven't had full range of motion since Monday evening. No signs of blisters or peeling but it hurts so badly :earseek: that I haven't been able to run or go to the gym. Fortunately, the kids were spared.
I'm hoping that I'll feel better tonight and can do some walking. My super supportive running bra is too snug to put on so I'm not going to try running yet. Here's a reminder to everyone to ask for help applying sunscreen to places you can't see!!!

Craig - Your math lesson is making me feel a little less aprehensive about the whole thing. I'm not going to worry so much about time per mile (other than maintaining it) in my training but rather putting in the distance.
MelanieC - Your words bring why I'm trying this crazy venture into focus. I hope to cross that finish line somehow this year!
Disnut - Ouch! As a light complected blonde I know the feeling unfortunately. Hope you feel better soon!
Question - My "long" run is scheduled for Saturday. I was up to being ready for a 5miler but have since slacked big time on my training and have just finally got back on track this week with 2-3 mile wogs. So what should my long wog be?? I really want to try for a 5 miler sometime but don't want to get hurt (feeling pretty sore today). Should I stick with 4 this week?

Good morning all!
Melanie- Thank you for posting about your experience. There is a passage in the Marathoning for Mortals about how completing your first long distance race will change your life-- things that seemed extremely difficult or downright impossible suddenly become possible. You life becomes a lot clearer. You become more goal-oriented. He talks about how he erased 45 years of failing or not finishing things in one race. That really struck a cord with me and your post validated that. Thanks. :)
Yesterday I did my 35 minute run (3 run/ 2 fast walk) and then did my stride drills on the track afterwards. The 35 minute part was kind of a bear (ran too late in the afternoon, it was a little too warm, etc), but those stride drills MFM tells you to do were amazing for me. For as much as I am proud of myself for making the commitment to really do this race this time (after 4 failed previous attempts) and for completing these multi-mile runs; those stride drills made me suddenly realize that I was making progress. I felt strong, I felt powerful, I felt fast !!! For the first time since I quit swimming competitively, I felt like I was truly pushing myself and getting somewhere. (Sorry.... running epihany..)
Luckily for me, my Garmin 201 came in the mail yesterday, so I'm all ready for my 5-miler tomorrow morning. My old GPS watch died on me, so I figured that I would upgrade as opposed to trying to get it fixed.
Did any of you use some kind of belt pack to carry your stuff during the race? I'm thinking gels, a small camera, my room key... those sorts of things.
Happy training today everyone!

Do you think you can explain them? I don't mean to put you on the spot, but I am just hoping that hearing another explanation might just park it in my brain in a way that will make sense.

Solo-- I am so glad you had such a positive experience yesterday. I am going to be doing those stride drills prescribed by MfM too, but don't quite understand what they are. Do you think you can explain them? I don't mean to put you on the spot, but I am just hoping that hearing another explanation might just park it in my brain in a way that will make sense.
Sure, I'll try my best:
Basically, stride drills are sort of like controlled sprints where you concentrate on form and having a quick footstrike. So you start off going fairly slowly, but with really good form, then you pick up your footstrike while keeping your great form. Eventually you'll get really going fairly quickly. You only do that for 30 seconds, then rest with a minute of slow walking. Then you repeat four times.
I think it would be easiest to do it on a track or really flat surface. While concentrating on my form and quick turnover, I'm sure that if I wasn't on the track I would have fell flat on my face somehow.
If I have confused you more or yuo have any other questions, let me know, I'll be happy to answer!

Okay, so now I just have to figure out what "good form" is! :teeth: Seriously, though, sometimes I realize that I have no consistency at all. There are times I am stiff backed and walking very upright with my shoulders back. Other times I realize I am hunching over with my shoulders rolled forward. There are times I feel I have unconsciously tightened up all the muscles in my back and abdomen. It is all very random, it seems. I am going to read up on the physiology of walking and jogging and try to learn some stuff. I have become very conscientious (thanks, Craig and others!) about the placement of my feet, heel first and placed as if there is a straight line running between my feet. I notice my feet "fight" my new shoes because the shoes prevent "rolling" and my feet definitely want to do that. So, there is still some resistance to the placement of my foot when I am wearing that shoe and I think when I adapt to that shoe (with a lot of practice, I am sure), I will be creating a more productive stride.
I can't wait to try the stride drills. I know just the place to do it -- there is a straightaway on the long, far side of the fountain walking path. Besides everything else, it is flat and straight and far away from all the benches where "spectators" hang out to watch the fountains. ;) Now I understand what I have seen runners doing on the track at our YMCA too -- there is a big stopwatch on the wall at the end of a straightaway and I realize those runners are definitely working on stride. I really can't wait to try.
Thanks, solo!

Cam - I have found I run or walk best when looking straight ahead. That keeps you from slumping down, which I do when I'm tired. In HS, they always said to look at the shoulders of teh person in front of you. It took me unti lthis year to realize what a diffence looking straight ahead will do ofr you. For me, everythign else just follows in line!

I ran on the treadmill today for 40 minutes. I tried run 3 minutes/walk 3 minutes. My time was the same as on Monday when I did run3/walk2. I think I need that extra minute of walking to help me recover from the running, which will allow me to run faster. I don't know. I keep playing with the intervals. Eventually I hope to find a mix that will allow me to do 12 minute miles. Aah, to dream . . . :paw:

Solotraveler- I had a waist pack that had a space for two gels and a waterbottle. It also fit a few other things.
What I learned: I didn't need it. There is water and powerade often enough that I didn't need it. Eating the Goo I brought made my stomach upset, as well as drinking water. What I found is gatorade was better and didn't cause stomach bubbles. I also made the mistake of being nervous and downing two bottle of water prior to the race. This made me have to go to the bathroom 3 times prior to the race and I started the race feeling like I had to go to the bathroom. Around mile 5 I started slowing down, felt sick to my stomach and wasn't sure if I had to throw up or burp. The pressure of my bag and the swelling of my bladder from having to go to the bathroom so bad was horrible. Luckily I needed a good burp from the goo and water in my stomach, and a trip to the bathroom.
During my last race in April I had a half a banana before the race. With a few sips of gatorade. Then during the race I just drank gatorade only (no water). The only time my stomach didn't feel good is after I had bun running non stop for the last 3 miles of the race over a huge hill and I was pushing myself to the finish line after drinking some gatorade. I saw on the clock that I was extremely close to finishing in under 3 hours and I really pushed myself. My stomach felt a little quezy then but I was almost at the finish line. I used a regular fanny pack with my camera in it for this race.
For January, I'm going light. Not sure if I'll carry a camera or not. In January I fell down contemporary hill trying to take a picture as I was running on the sidewalk. My toe hit an uneven sidewalk and down I went. Just something big enough to maybe put my chapstick, and maybe a camera. No waterbottle or goo for me. They have enough stuff on the course including food around mile 10.

On the subject of cameras....I want to take one really badly, but I want a little one. I found myself checking them out at Staples last night. They are very reasonable and very small, but mine is still perfectly good. :( Oh the dilema. So, let's talk mor about this "free" sport! ;)

Ha, my sentiments exactly. Do I really need a Garmin, well they are pretty neat, what about an IPOD? Well, that would be really motivating!!
What about running attire?? Why do I find myself with 6 jogging bras where none of them fit quite right? Any suggestions? I also find myself looking into running tops, I am very tall and I need something that is quite long, especially when I wear the non-chafing "oh so flattering" shorts (you all know the ones). My search continues for the wicking shirts.
Finally, we have the expenses for race weekend. I already paid one night's deposit for the hotel room, my $100 entry fee. Must start budgeting for all the rest of the expenses for a Disney weekend!
Why?? Because the feeling is so great!! :Pinkbounc I have never felt such extreme emotion before, on one hand I hurt like the dickens during the last 3 miles yet, after the race such a feeling of accomplishment. A wonderful experience I want to do again. So yes, I will compete in this free sport too!

Yes I'm sure I've spent over a grand this year on this free sport and that doesn't even include the WDW marathon! Heck, the running shoes alone are a small fortune when you rotate them as often as we do!
But how many addictions can you be proud of and boast of your severity? Ya gotta love it ;)
BTW, once I found the "right" jog bra I find myself picking up a new one everytime I'm at Bob's (which is all to often). I have more COOLMAX clothing now than my work wardrobe.
Maybe there's a 12 step program out there for us :rotfl: "hi, my name is Sunny and I'm a runner", "hi, Sunny, welcome" :rotfl2: The only problem is: I don't want to be cured!!!!!

Did any of you use some kind of belt pack to carry your stuff during the race? I'm thinking gels, a small camera, my room key... those sorts of things.
Solo - The 1st year (2004), I did not need a pack b/c Ron (who you all feel like you know and love  ) carried EVERYTHING! Camra, gels (even the 100 or so Bree & I picked up around mile 18 :Pinkbounc ), clothes, powder gatoraid (yes, we mixed it w/ H2O  ), ect... 2005, Ron did not come with us :sad1: so Bree and I carried our own stuff. I was glad I had the extra drink in btwn the drink stops b/c it was HOT, & @ mile 20, I was THIRSTY! I will probably use it agian for the full marathon, maybe not the half. If you are planning on using one, train with one on your long runs. This will get you used to having one with you.
Cannot remember who talked about gaining 10 from oreos, but I UNDERSTAND! I think that I am ready to go back on WW now that I have eaten all the oreos in the house! :cool1: :cool1:
Sunny - Hi - My name is Christa and I am a runner too! I need to join too. This FREE SPORT is breaking me!

On the spur of the moment . . .
Martha and I just registered for the October 9 10K at Disney. The course is sort of the same as the last 6 miles of the marathon. This isn't for fun, no, not at all, it's a scouting trip for January 8. Amazingly enough we were able to get hotel and air for the Columbus Day weekend.
When our only child went off to College 2 years ago precisely we both felt like our world had ended. We held it together through orientation, but fell to pieces when we left the campus. But the ability to get up on a whim and do something fun is pretty darn cool.
I've got my half marathon and marathon wardrobe all planned out, now I need to come up with something for October. Basic black is alway elegant  .

Well, I did 3.75 in 40 min today. Really got to get to that cold tub! After bills....
Dh said I was going to take a disposable camera for teh marathon. Darn his memory! I might have been able to swingit if my birthday/anniversary present had not been so expensive this year. :(
Well, I'm 3/4 for workouts this week. If meatloaf says 3 outts' 4 ain't bad, then I must still be ok, right?;)

I just did speed work with DS. It wasn't the most productive session. Its hard to run your fastest with your neck craned every which way but straight. He was on the bleachers, under the bleachers, behind the water fountain... I managed to get in 400X4 repeats with a total of 1.7 miles. Definitely not enough warm up for speed work. But its the first session I've done since July! I don't know how I'll get faster at this rate.
I was wondering about carrying water, too. I carry 2 24 oz bottles on my long run (one in my pack, one in my hand), one water, one gaterade. I've been wondering if I should do something similar for the race since your not supposed to change things on race day. But, OTH, come Oct, Nov, I definitely won't be needed so much water on my long runs here in Mass.
I have a question for you northerners. Does anyone else get "blood-drained" hands in the cold weather. I forgot about it until last night when I got just a touch of it. In the cold months (even with gloves) the blood drains completely from my fingers. My fingers are white and totally numb for about 10-20 minutes after the run. The blood and sensation comes back in splotches and my fingers are then bright white with bright red splotches. It looks so bizarre, and is quite uncomfortable. I haven't found anyone else who gets this.

Hi Team mates!
So, Lisa maybe Goofy? Wow! Well, you KNOW you can do the full--you already did that whilst sick. Going the half with DH? Will he go slow enough for you to not get to tired for the next day?
Sunny, I have a question...How do you accidentally run 4 miles! :earseek: You go! You certainly amaze me and inspire me when I am not having a good day. (Yesterday, then again today by the way)
Craig, glad to see you posting up instead of reading only. Your words are most encouraging. Hope we can offer some back to you on occasion. Sounds like you will be styling. How fun that you get to go in October.
Liz, thank you so much for your calls. I really needed the push start. Wish I didn't have the bad days, but oh well. Tomorrow will be better...It is a REST day for me! :earboy2:
I am glad that posting my pics have made some of you more than ready to press onward. All I can say is that I know you will not regret it. I'm glad I didn't bore you with those pics.
Melanie great story. You said it for me too.
Everyone, enjoy this time. It will be a true roller coaster until the day. Enjoy all of it. That is what makes this so special. We are all riding it together sharing the hills and thrills!
I had a major STONKER today.-- thanks Helen for my new vocabulary -- I feel pretty down about it, but I will shake it up and be fine. I don't know what was going on with me though. If I knew I guess I would not feel so down. I started out to see how well I could do for a 5k time. Well I'm chugging along, not too quickly but, at a decent pace. This pace I usually work through on my quicker times when I run during the week for time. I am using a different path yesterday and today. I just siezed up. I usually travel with old age hip area pains doc thinks it may be back related, but any way. I just felt the muscles all around my hip joint just cramping all of a sudden. I slowed to a walk, that hurt more than the jog. I turned back and went for only 2.6 miles today and did it in 38 minutes. All I can say is sigh, ouch, sigh.

Buffett and Meatloaf? As yes, "I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you, now don't be sad, don't be sad, 'cause 2 out of 3 ain't bad."
I think in my case the appropriate song is "Growing older but not up." Or perhaps, "We are the people our parents warned us about."
I love Buffett so much because you are right, I am too serious and responsible. The thought of running off to the Caribbean is wonderful, but even in the summer if I'm not out of town I'm in my office. Jimmy's music lets me fantasize about living in the islands and doing nothing all day.
Good form on 3.75 in 40. You're moving right along towards January.
Sunny
I always get cold hands when I'm outside in cool weather. My legs never get cold, but I've always got gloves on past mid-october. I'm not to your exteme pain point, since my hands eventually warm up during runs and then I don't need the gloves. For Disney I start with cheap cotton garden gloves and once my hands warm up I discard them.
Lisa
I'm probably being extremely naive, but I'm training to run a really strong half, and hoping slowing down and enjoying myself will get me through the full. My longest training run will probably be 16 miles or so, and I plan to do the half at about 9:15 per mile pace. On the day of the full I'm planning on 11:30 pace or slower, and if I need to walk a bit every mile to stay fresh, I'll do that. I care a lot about my time for the half, but my only goal for the full is to finish and feel good doing it. I will do a few back to backs this fall, a long day followed by 10K or so, and I'll enforce the same 24 hour turn around I'll face at WDW, so my body will realize what it's like to run hard and then get up fatigued the next day and go out again. I think as long as I don't go too fast at the beginning I'll be okay in the full.
Maybe this won't work out, but I'll find out on January 8.

Craig - Just re-living my college days where for a brief 3 to 6 months I was a bit wild and after that, just enjoyed the weekends. Have to admit my fave Meatloaf is Paradise. FOr Buffett, I think I have a new theme song for the marathon. Come Monday, it'll be alright.... I realize that music devices are not allowed. But (shhhh) has anyone ever taken one anyway? I really need my MP3 player during my runs. I would love to get one of those tiny IPods but I don't actually need one. Of course with this new obsession that really means very little :rotfl:
Tonight was supposed to be a xt day but I came home to a mess so I ended up helping someone move furniture. I suppose that could loosly be considered weight lifting ;)

Well I maintained my sub 15 min mile for 2 miles yesterday. That was my goal & I was so thrilled I made it. Now I just need to work on stretching it out to 13 miles. There are a bunch of 5k's coming up around town so now I'm trying to figure out which ones to do. The problem is they are usually on Sat. a.m. & that is when DS soccer games are.
I hope I can find a small pack to bring with me. I would love to be able to have a disposable camera to take pre race (and maybe during) pics.
Yes this "free" sport is starting to get expensive. I already have $90 shoes that aren't working for me so I am going to have to get some others. I can't return them because I bought them out of town. I love my MP3 player, $10 per pair of socks, wicking clothes, etc.

Good morning! :sunny: or maybe I should say :umbrella:. It's pouring in Ohio, can't imagine what it's like in Florida right now. Lisa, Mel, and all other Floridians--stay safe!!
I had to run on the treadmill last night, I went over to my parents and didn't get home until after dark. I did 32 minutes of the walk/run and I did 2.36 miles. A little slower than the other night, but it took me a couple turns of running to find a comfortable running pace. Once I got settled into a groove, it was nice running on the TM. It's so hard for me to walk on the TM, because I feel like I'm going to fall off the back, but running was much easier than walking. I have a whopping 2 miles tomorrow, just don't know if I'm going to be able to make it. :goodvibes
Oh, Stephen is going to the doctor at 11:45 today, so hopefully we'll hear some good news. I know how devasted he would be if he can't start his training schedule on time and won't be able to run the marathon.

Lisa- to train for Goofy I'm doing back-to-back runs. I've scheduled my training runs to focus on the full so whatever I do for the full on Sun I do half on Sat.
This week I'm scheduled for 10 for Sunday so I'm doing 5 Saturday.
However, next week, I'm doing 11 on Sun and sticking with 5 for Sat. I'm only raising my Sat on even # Sun. I'm doing a 4 min run/1 min walk and hope to stay within 11-12 min pace as this is a pretty comfortable pace.
I hope to get in one 20+ miler as my final long training run.
My sunburn is finally fading. I went for a 2 mile wog with my 9 yo last night. It didn't hurt until I started sweating. OUCH!
Glad to see that others are thinking about their Disney running styles already. I'm going shopping this weekend to look for an extra pair of the shorts I like to run in. One for the half and one for the full. I've already got the shirts picked out.

Hey everyone,
Yesterday I got a run/walk in while my son was at football practice. It's in a park with a track around it. I started easy since I really haven't done much since my race in April because of my injury. Boy did I loose a lot of my ability to run, lol! I thought I'd go out and run a quick mile. I had to stop a few times and walk. I guess I need to get on my treadmill and use the next few weeks to really work on building my running stamina back up. I want to work on speeding up my time too. My muscles are still sore from the FIRM tape I did on Wednesday. I also noticed that when I ran, the lactic acid built up quickly in my legs. From what I can remember, that goes away as your body adapts.
Cam- I have to do a double take when I read some of your posts. I read about the Buffet concert and thought, wait...........he was in Philly last night. Duh you live in Delaware! I bet you had a blast. We should do a long run together sometime this fall while training. We could meet somewhere half way. I don't live too far from Philly and I occasionally to Christiana Delaware.
I hope all the Floridians are ok this morning. I'm not sure how it affected the ones closer to Orlando.

But Katrina definitely helped cool things down for this morning! It was a great wog (Lily, Cam...mind if I borrow your word?). I felt like I was working at it, but it was comfortable, just like Craig said :dog2:
Someone asked about a block of rooms...I looked into it awhile ago. You need at least 10 rooms and someone who's willing to be responsible for the overall contract. People can book into the block and pay individually, but the person that holds the contract would be responsible for any that don't pay. The rates were pretty good and you can get all at one resort, or a mix. At the time, most of us were DVC or had made other arrangements, so we didn't have 10 rooms. We've had so many people join us since then, there might be enough interest now to do it! If anyone wants to pursue it, PM me and I'll send the info via private email.

Count me in on the outfit selected crew. Well, at least my shorts. I guess the shirts will depend on the weather that weekend. As the Penguin says, I will be bringing ALL my choices and make the determination at the time. So I will be taking multiple choices.
I will be taking the illegal MP3 in the form of an iPod shuffle. I figure I can use it on the long part for the trek that Lisa has said is a bit desolate. Otherwise for the half, I did fine without one.
I'm not exactly settled on waist pack style yet. I have 3 choices, 1. an amphipod waist belt, 2. a small waist pack that will barely fit a water bottle, 3. the Dis lime green from the disboards shop. I carry my phone clipped to the outside band, and my camera looped through the belt too.
Minnie, be careful of the days before your long run and after to get the proper rest. The group I train with on Saturdays stresses to not do any extensive training before and after your long runs. You might want to be careful that you don't do too much so as to cause you injury or to cause you not to have that rest to make your longer run.
Lisa, I think there was supposed to be some sort of info about the back to back runs on the Hal Higdon site. I also think our NC team had posted up their web site plan for thier Goofy training, I just don't remember that link.
Krista, good going on the TM. I am proud of your dedication that you did THAT dreaded TM training. (I do not like TM training)
Good luck to Steve at the doc today.
Melanie, yes, it is amazing how quickly we can lose our training. However, you will regain it quickly. I seem to feel it goes back up more quickly the less time I am away. While you had to be off training for what seems like quite some time to you, I think you will make good progress. Good luck there.
disnutt, glad to hear the sunburn is not a problem. Did you make up your training schedule or did you find one programmed already for this Goofy thing?
Cam, glad your evening at the concert was great! Have a good weekend and see you back in no time.
ME, I am going to have a gerat training day! It is a rest day and "Friday Night Date Night" here. Whoo hoo for me! Longer run tomorrow, so I'm hoping it will significantly improve from this week's sad training.

He said if it still hurts after a couple of weeks to come back and he'd do a MRI, but he told Stephen that he can tell the knee is already starting to heal itself. :cheer2: :cheer2:

I haven't found anyone else who gets this.
Sunny
Sunny, Not trying to diagnose you or anything but there is something called Raynauds Phenomenon. This condition causes the blood vessels in fingers to spasm when exposed to cold temps and blood flow is interrupted. It can also affect toes, ears and nose. I don't think it's serious, but can be painful or uncomfortable.

Krista - Glad to hear that your husband's knee is going to be ok! I went to see a dr. about a sports inj. question earlier this year, and i kept quizzing everyone to find our which dr.s in my clinic were runners so i could find the right one! i knew they would understand the inability to quit!!!
Sunny - my arms are jello today! we bought some rec. kayaks this week at our local outdoor store's sale. I got one with a big enough cockpit to put in a small seat for the boy. I took him out on the lake for a fun paddle/picnic. We saw deer and turtle and fish (yuck). anyway, the point of the story is... after loading the kayak on my car x2 and carrying it down to the lake and paddling around, my arms are JELLO. My IC, which we have already established is pretty laid back, did not inform me that we were actually doing upper body and low back work! I'll have to talk to her about that!
OK.. We are flying to MI to run the CRIM with dh's sister. We are probably just going to all run together. I'm counting it as my 10mile long run! I think I'm taking a camera on the course, just so I can get pictures of the guys who pass out beer at mile 3!
Have a great weekend all!
:wave2: OK...my name is on the long list of marathoners, but I have not been a good girl by checking in with you guys! I must say, this is one determined group!!! Good job! Lots of inspiration and learning!!!! :sunny: Now, I'm signed up for Goofy, but sadly, I'm still not 100% committed like most of you. Maybe that's "committed" if I decide to go for it!!! Right now I'm focusing on the Chicago marathon in October. Then I'll decide if I'm "in" or not. Did a 21 miler today...all I can say is that's a long way!!! :rotfl:
Those of you that already have your outfits planned... ...I just know what I'm not going to wear. I usually pack about three choices. As for music, bring it if you want to, nobody cares. Last year I had my DH offer it to me when I passed by, but suprisingly, I never wanted it. :confused3
Just wanted to stop by, since it's been a long time!!!! Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Mel- good luck with the Crim. We're hoping for good weather for our event here at work tomorrow and it looks like we're going to get it. Hope things stay dry on the east side of the state.
Chimera- Great job!
Best of luck to everyone with their long runs tomorrow--- have fun!
I did my long run this morning- 5 miles (run 3 min/ walk 2 min) in 47:36, which is 9:31 pace    I was very psyched afterward. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new Garmin-- SO much better than the Timex I was using. I was very suprised by my pace. I am actually running and walking a lot faster than I thought I was-- it was a nice suprise.
Well, back to work for me-- Happy training everyone!

GOOFYs--what are you doing to prepare????? Taboo topic on Team in Training so there is no training plan for anyone considering it--and actually a discouragement from doing both events.
I have heard that TNT is discouraging this. Are you TNT? Well, Bree and I aren't so this is what we are doing. We are training for the Marathon up to 24 miles (actually we will run a marathon in Dec so I guess we are training to 26.2  ). Here is what the saturday long runs look like. Start adding Friday long run where it has Fri:
8/27/05 - 8
9/3/05 (Labor Day) - 9
9/10/05 - 10
9/17/05 - 11
9/24/05 - 12 Fri - 6

11/12/05 - 12
11/19/05 - 20 Fri - 10
11/26/05 - 12
12/3/05 we are running the Charlotte Marathon Fri - 11
12/10/05 - 12
12/17/05 - 24 Fri - 12
12/24/05 taper 12-15
12/31/05 taper 8-10
1/7/06 Marathon Goofy's Double!
The principle is fairly simple. Add one mile per week to your long run until you hit the 12 mile mark. Then run long every other week.
Once you pass that 12 mile long run, the "inbetween" 10 milers become "Tempo" runs, run them at marathon pace.
Long runs, not the "Tempo" runs, are run 1-1:30 mpm slower than you could run that day. If you had to.
What about the rest of the week? Depends on a lot of variables, like how much cross training you are doing. For most people 2-3 other runs during the week will fill the Minimum Effort bill.
Is this clear? Everything is onwww.tricharlotte.com and this may make it more clear (or is it clearer? :teacher: )
Krista - congrats on DHs Knee!
Did 14 today. Time was OK. 2 hours and 30 min. Oh well. I keep telling myself to go slower for the 1/2 so I will not die on the full. I think I will aim for 2:20. Normal 1/2 time is around 2:00 to 2:10 so this will get me there slower. May try for 7 tomorrow to start getting ready for the Goofy! Don't know though...I want to sleep in at least until 0800.

Since I definitley want to somehow complete a long run tomorrow I decided to lay off and rest as planned today. My body's pretty sore so it was probably a good thing.
My plan is to complete 4 miles and then add an additional 1 on the end depending how I feel.

Thanks for that--yes it is discouraged...one of our participants is doing it with a newbie--he has alumni who has been a team captain and a coach---so if I decide to be a renegade, I will have him help me--but I must decide pronto!
Not sure yet--I'm actually concerned to get in a lot of trouble since I am a team captain. :(
But if I end up committing to the half with them and then the full for a goofy---don't think they can really say much. But like I said--I fear to cause a ruckus....but it is being done by 2 on our team (who have all but told the staff to mind their own business especially since one of them has a degree in sports something or other and is quite knowledgable on the subject).
That being said--did 5:1's today---but forgot to stop my Garmin. So pace was 12:33 with a Garmin running more than it should for 3.15 miles...and then a 1.4 walk up/jog down/walk back to the top of the bridge (not over).

Lisa, can I ask why they're discouraging going Goofy? It just seems like if you did the 1/2 with them and completed it so you met your obligation, I don't know why anyone would care what you did on Sunday. Maybe you can't say without getting in trouble, but I'm genuinely curious. I thought about doing TNT, way back at the beginning of this quest but decided against it for a variety of reasons. If they're that restrictive, I guess I'm glad I didn't do it.

:cool1: I made it the entire 5 miles :cool1:
Okay I know it's not much to all the big :dog: out there but for me it was my first time in years managing that distance. I did run 3 walk 2 and my time was 1:01:23 or a 12:17 per mile overall pace. The first four miles were cake but that last mile was :earseek: I lost my pace big time over that last 1/2 mile so it was closer to 4 really good 12 min miles and the last 1 mile being probably closer to 12:30. That last 1/2 mile was really a gut check so to speak. But I made it the entire 5 miles :Pinkbounc
Question Time - Towards the end of that I had major problems with my right upper thigh area. I mean hurting so bad that I had to drop from a jog to a walk because of the pain. Any ideas as to what this could be? I stretched out that area really good after I got done and the pain is now gone but it hurt big time. I also had problems with my siatic (sp) nerve in the early stages, same side but in the well rear  Would this affect it?
Thanks for all the help and support everyone. There is no way that I would have accomplished those 5 miles without knowing that I had to report back here :grouphug:

Is your pain your hip flexor? What ever it is make sure you get ice on it today to keep down the inflammation. I find my siatic pain and hip flexor pain go hand in hand. Lots of stretching today too.
Sunny, all I can say is WOW!
Christa, you are doing Charlotte marathon too?? What is that 4 or 5 weeks before Disney? That is awesome.
Solo, are you doing intervals for your 3 run/2 walk?? That is an amazing pace for 5 miles.
I did 7 miles yesterday for my long run it took me about 75 minutes, I felt pretty good at the end. I have been taking some protein powder after my long runs seems to help recovery.

In general b/c training for ultra-distance is difficult (which is practically what this is at 39.3 miles). I don't know the official reason, but the seasoned veteran was asked explicitly to not talk about it. I have no idea why--I fear getting in trouble and am afraid to ask. It is a new thing--and the whole program design is to get a person from nothing to the finish line in a 4 month season--it is designed for the novice...the ol' "anybody can do this bit".
Now I am very tempted to ask....I think I will!
On the whole--training for a marathon is tough enough--to train for the extra brings extra risk of injury....and the whole point of your donations you receive is that you are committing to doing the event and getting to one finish line--getting to two, I suppose makes it more difficult.
ETA: They aren't that restrictive at all--this is just a new thing and pretty unheard of in marathon-land. Any participant is free to do whatever they want to do in terms of training. They have a national coach in who turn trains the local coaches. The local coaches base how they coach participants on this national training program and their expertise and research. If they tell me not to eat a banana split the night before a long run--it is based on the idea that generally eating a banana split is not a good idea.
Generally for the novice (who most of TNT's participants are)--it isn't a good idea to tackle nearly 40 miles...before starting with a 26 or a 13 first.
I sent an e-mail, I will let you know what I hear.

Is it on the side---anywhere from the joint down the side to your knee. If so, it is your IT Band....Something like iliotibial band or something like that. For some people it just shortens...they sell special straps for that---it can be massaged out with an exercise ball, but the last time I posted about this I was told it was too difficult to figure out.

Christa-- I see you are currently running longer LRs than your training schedule. I am, too. That's not a problem is it? Your info is very helpful. Thanks.
Sunny - We are doing higher milage for 2 reasons. First, b/c we are doing the Charlotte marathon, this is about yhe milage we should be for that. Second, I feel if I am already running a certain milage, why go back. We tried to at least keep up our fitness from a 1/2 marathon distance so we would not have to start back @ square one. We were going to keep @ marathon distance, but that just did not work out. That would require at least 1 20 miler every month and after we missed about 3 months of doing that we just thought we would reduce the milage to 13 or so and start there.
I don't think this is a problem though as long as one is trained up for it. Anyone else have an opinion on being ahead of LR schedule?
Sunny - I am also going to use an MP3 player. DH used one last year and he is OK. A 1/2, that I ran in March, said we could not use the MP3 players/walkmans. I used it anyway and PRed. It is the 1st race I have ever used one and now I have a good time to give to Disney to place me in a higher correll (sp?).
Lisa Loves Pooh - Oh the IT band! OUCH....Had that on my 20 mile run last year.

I haven't been posting much because I just don't have much to say. I really wish I was on track to do the half this year but at the rate I am goung it's not going to happen. That makes me really sad because my "inner athlete" really wants to get out there and complete the half this year. Unfortunately, my outer aging, overweight body does not agree with that decision! At this point my times are way too slow to stay ahead of the sweeper. A nineteen minute mile time just doesn't allow me to finish, and that's what I want to do. My training for the next month will consist of moving boxes etc into our new house. Oct will be getting all our stuff organized. We're bad packrats, I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff, but there's still plenty to organize! Nov will be a trip to CT for DH's DD's wedding.
I hope you guys don't mind if I keep hanging around here. I'm setting a goal to do the 2007 WDW half with no excuses. It takes me a long time to get just a little bit better, so if I keep on "training to train" now I should be ready by then. You could still start your training now and acknowledge you may not make it the whole way? Of course we want you around whether you train for '06 or '07. The more the merrier :grouphug:
I'm really happy today. I am not the least bit sore or run down from my 20 miler. This is so important to me because I will not have a day to rest after the marathon. I easily could hit the parks today. (I know there's a big difference between a 20 mile training run and 26.2 mile race). I'm really torn between wanting to make the best time I can and taking it easy so I am not junk for the rest of our vacation.
Good news! I've picked out my post-marathon race! Its going to be a half in downtown Boston on March 11th. I have been thinking I will be in serious trouble if I don't have something else on the horizon after WDW. January-March is always a really rough time for me with the short days, cold weather. I get the blues. To have nothing to look forward to after WDW could be very bad for me.

Nope its actually on the very front top portion of my thigh and goes in towads the groin area. The pain went away and then yesterday afternoon when I was walking through the mall it came back again. The pain is more like a cramp than anything.
Today is a rest day for me (I hvae rest days scheduled before and after a long run hopefully that is the right thing to do) but I plan to do some stretching as that area is still stiff.
Thanks for the info!

Hi everyone, Delta is having some good airline fares to MCO! I just booked Greensboro, NC to MCO, Marathon weekend for $118, total. We usually drive, but the price was so good and the cost of gas...

I'm still here, I'm still training. I just know I will not be ready for 2006 no matter how much I'd like to be. Believe me, the older you get and the more out of shape you let yourself get, the longer it takes you to train to get to where you want to be. My mother told me that would happen when I was in my 20's and in great shape and I just laughed at her. I never imagined I would let myself ever get so out of shape, but here I am. She certainly was right.
Currently I'm doing the monthly exercise challenge at a rate of 2000 min/month. I have only missed goal once in the past year and that was due to travel. I am walking, swimming and biking mostly for those 2000 min with some strength training in there as well. I'm not giving up, I'm just thinking of it as taking a lot longer than some of you to get me to the starting line but I will get there. I really want that feeling like Tammy and Lily have described so well.
