A compendium of items we learned from the "super secret, ultra exclusive" meeting...
* VMK_Mocha was wondering why I didn't answer her message about getting over to the meeting. She actually came to the room I was in...stood in front of me and said "Why aren't you at the meeting Fly?" (not really something learned...but a funny story. I kind of wish I could have said..."Uh, I missed the memo??")
* Community leaders aren't special in any way shape or form. Nope, we are not special. I'm probably even less special than more than half the people on this board!
* If you're in distress, a community leader cannot do anything at all to help you. Nothing at all. Absolutely nothing! They can teach you how to report people...and that's about it. We can't even report people secondarily (is that a word?).
* Community leaders have no "official" uniforms. Although there are people walking around in Sorceror hats, it doesn't mean much. They're just trying to be "cool." ;)
* The VMK have no way to talk to Community Leaders, and therefore we get no special information. It just so happens you learned about the event about 12 hours in advance. VMK can't override the messages they can send through VMK and they don't have our e-mail addresses...therefore there really isn't anyway to organize us Community leaders.
* The staff and developers are still working on what the "next level" of Community Leadership will mean, and if they will be able to give us items (presumably to hand out in the future) and get us messages.
* VMK staff cannot give us instructions or give us things to do during events, although VMK_Babs did say there will be plenty opportunities for CL's to help out around the kingdom during this coming event.
EDIT: * Just one last thing regarding CL applications. Put some time into the essay, but don't take too long on it. What they're looking at (so says VMK_Babs) is the answers to your questions. Although they look very easy...write them out very carefully. She said they have been judging them on "how good the answers are." Therefore, I'm thinking you all need to put your all in the questions if you want the CL job (which IMHO, is fun...but not all that great). I'm not sure what they're exactly looking for, as I like wdwlover and Bezoar were picked as the first Community Leaders, and didn't get the questions...but be eloquent and precise with your answers. Don't be afraid to write a novel about how to get some credits...they'll appreciate it from what I understood.
OK, well that's what I got out of the first 45 minutes of the meeting. Basically the big thing is...is that CL's really aren't all that important and you do lots more work than you get fringe benefits. ;) Hurray no fringe benefits!

I am totally bummed! The last time the costumes went on sale, I was in WDW and I didn't know about it. This time, I will be in Bermuda for my high school reunion! Maybe I can get near a computer for five minutes...
Is there a special store where the clothing is available? Or do I just click on "shop"? Thanks!

Does anyone else have concerns that an entire event centered around "trading" will occur this weekend, when for the past few weeks, trading has only been working sporadically? Yesterday, I had to try 3 different rooms before being able to complete a trade.
I do not look forward to the aftermath of this event if they don't get their bugs ironed out.

Well I won't be trading unless they make it a have to to complete an outfit or something...and how they could do that I have not fiqured that one out yet.
Unless they only offer parts of say the outfit at different times and if you are not online at that exact time you will have to trade to complete your attire.
But if they are going to do that they should let us know in advance so we can buy extras so we have something to trade or barter with.

* Community leaders aren't special in any way shape or form. Nope, we are not special. I'm probably even less special than more than half the people on this board!
Babs told us Yavn and her felt we were because we help people on VMK. I think doing this is a great thing because we are donating our time and energy.
* If you're in distress, a community leader cannot do anything at all to help you. Nothing at all. Absolutely nothing! They can teach you how to report people...and that's about it. We can't even report people secondarily (is that a word?).
Our job is NOT to report for players, but to assist them. We are to HELP players, not do things for them.
* Community leaders have no "official" uniforms. Although there are people walking around in Sorceror hats, it doesn't mean much. They're just trying to be "cool." ;)
It was decided after the meeting that players need a way to recognize leaders more easily. We volunteered to wear Disneyland shirts and the Sorcerer's Hats we received at the meeting.

Well, I guess I'm just going to be "VMK's Rogue Community Leader." I also suppose I'll need to explain myself and why I "divulged" such information.
The whole basis of the meeting was so the staff can together a group of CL's to make sure they know what they're doing. Sadly while I was there, people spent nearly the entire meeting try to find out the latest gossip about the event. If anything was emphasized about the CL program, is that we are no different than anyone else in VMK, except for a "CL_" and a Sorcerer Mickey badge.
It's been brought to my attention that a whole group of people are cringing at the fact that I've said things that aren't too complimentary about the CL program. I think this may be a misunderstanding because of a fundamental difference in our understanding over the CL program. The job of the CL is to inform and people know they can come to us for good information.
Now, seeing as the definition of a CL is one who will inform, I thought it would be important that I release as much information to the public about the CL program to dispel any misconceptions of power, because in all honesty we have no power. (Except the power of knowledge, which we're supposed to share)
One of the cornerstones of my world view is that when people are educated about something, they won't get mad about something. People didn't know what was going on in the CL meeting. When people got information about it, they were quieted down.
One of the points brought up against my viewpoints is that it would make people less likely to come for help about something, because we have no power. Well...we're still a CL right? If people want to come to us, it's OK and we'll help. If people go to someone else, it's still OK! They're still getting their information and they can go on to be successful citizens of VMK. CL's are here to disseminate knowledge throughout the kingdom, not much else.
Well, I may have "destroyed" the sterling example of CL "godliness," but I think it's important for everyone to know what they're getting into before they become a CL. It's a lot of work, work that makes you feel really good, but you don't get anything other than the satisfaction that you've helped someone.
I think everyone had a right to know what was going on in that meeting. Babs just wanted a little time so Community Leaders can get together and can discuss what it means to be a CL with some staffers. I think it was meant to deflate some of the giant heads some CL's have developed...sadly I think it only inflated them!
PS: The only reason this message is public...is because only one person has approached me about this. And she informed me a whole group of you disagree with me. I have no problem with you sending me off an IM or a PM so we can have a more personal chat about it!

Well said, Fly. I appreciate your efforts to make people understand that CL's are NOT mini-cast members.
People need to understand that the only real thing CL means is that you've got a lot of experience in the game (not to mention time) and that you would be a good person to ask should a question arise. Of course, this is what CL's were intended to mean, but after having asked questions of a few CL's who had no idea the answers, I'm not so sure...(I'm not speaking of any CL's I've seen reply here, not to worry)
There are many CL's out there who now think that because they wear the moniker they're better than they once were...or that they've been elevated to a higher plane than the average-joe player.
I think some of us need to take a step back and stop and think about what this really is...a game. having that CL in front of your name doesn't get you the first dish of ice cream, nor does it get you an A on your Science paper. It's a little title in a game that means you've played longer and might (I stress MIGHT...) know more than the average "guest" about the game.
Let's all remember that, no matter what letters are in front of our names, we are all guests in Disney's VMK. This game is to have fun! Those of us who aren't CL's? Let's try not to let the "green eyed monster" (no, not you, Be) take us over because we don't have those two letters. Yes, I'm including myself in that.
Enjoy yourself, have fun. :)
Oh yeah...on topic: WOOHOO! PARTAAAAY this weekend :) LOL

I have been "Nedding" this morning for an hour or so...and I'm 5 plays (100 credits) short of having 21,001. That will end soon-I have to go get husband from the airport in a half hour or so. :) I can play Ned on average, in a minute and a second.

Fly, as always, excellent post. I agree with absolutely everything in it. Information is to be shared, so long as its not known to be confidential.
I like to think of the sorcerer's badge as nothing more than a sign of appreciation from the VMK for trying to help out other players. And I think of the CL_ as an ugly, unwieldy albatross stapled to my name that I wish had never happened.
(..snip..) Let's try not to let the "green eyed monster" (no, not you, Be) (..snip..)

I too was in the Community Leader meeting for a time and while there was an effort to "organize" an "official" outfit, VMK_Babs was more of the "you may if you wish, it isn't prohibited" but she was not exactly "yahoo, brilliant idea" either. In fact, she kept emphasizing that the Community Leaders are just guests like all the other guests. Our role is to help other guests with questions and games while we go about "playing" ourselves. Pretty much confirmed that what I have been doing all along, even before getting the Community Leader status, is what I should be doing. Namely, while I wander around the kingdom, I answer questions, help newer guests get oriented, etc.
If I am serving in an official capacity during an event (such as helping a staff member get a game going in a public room) then I will consider wearing an agreed upon outfit if the staff ask it. However, as I pointed out last night in the meeting, the clothes can be purchased by all the other guests. They recognize us via our badges and the CL in the name. I don't feel further identification is required. I also stated, because I feel very strongly about this, that community leader status should not be an entree into an exclusive little club. It is tough enough to fend off the "I want your hat, I want your magic pin" demands withoug the perception developing that community leaders are a little country club sect. Sorry, I won't play that way.
Oh, and for those who do not know, I am CL_TinkerBlue.

As far as community leader I just think it is a fun thing for people to do to help others out. Being a CL does not give you anything. The satisfaction of helping someone is great. I wish we had a better way of contacting VMK staff. Any way i agree with fly. :cool1:

Huh, what, where, when?! They doubled NPC credits for a weekend?! Was it the 50th celebration, because I didn't even think about getting my NPC credits...spending most of my time in the parks and grabbing an hour or so of VMK time back at the hotel.
Anyways, I'm off to Ned again. I'm looking forward to being able to buy those new stuff. (And yes, I'm the one who owes GBShorts...it's rough taking care of 3 younger cousins with no high-speed internet for miles around...)

During the 5oth celebrations instead of 20 credits per NPC, you received 40 credits. That is especially nice for those who can "double up" and click the NPCs in 12 hours instead of once a day.
I hope everyone has a splendid time for this event. For those entering rooms, best of luck to you. I am not entering a room as I intend to focus more on the new guests but I will try to reach some of the guest rooms to help everyone build up the numbers in their rooms.
