View Full Version : Getting fit for DisCon...

Scrumptious meals, favorite snacks, dessert parties. Hummmmmmm!!!! It is impossible for me to go to WDW and diet. To make things even worse, after this marathon, I have a 4 night cruise... Well, in order not to be mistaken with Shamu, I have decided _ after sunday pizza _ to diet seriously, or at least as seriously as my job allows (I review restaurants), and to go back to 5 work out sessions a week. Is anyone else trying to cut now to indulge later??? How do you prepare yourself for a Disney trip???

Normally the only thing I do to get ready to go to Disney is to try and walk (me and the dog) around a mile a day to get my feet and legs in shape. This year, though, I've started a low-calorie, low fat diet that seems to be doing the trick. Most people don't think I'm overweight, but I hide my paunch fairly well. Hopefully it'll be gone before November. I've got some gym equipment here at the house as well.

Tomorrow is DAY ONE of Tia's 'Get Fit For WDW Routine'

Walking is going to be my number ONE weapon against 'this body' and watching what I eat will be weapon number TWO! :D

I would like to lose at least 20 lbs. before DIS-Con

Good Luck Livia.....maybe we can help to encourage eachother for the next 3 months.

Steve, you have already been an inspiration to me!

And now Barb says she has lost 5 lbs.......wow! You guys are really working it!

Go Team Go!!! :bounce:

I will be walking 5 days a week (on the treadmill) starting Tuesday.

Tia: I will really need a lot of encouragement. My restaurant special edition is due to mid-october. Till then, I am expected to eat my way around Rio de Janeiro and pick the best italian, the best french, the best salad, the best whatever... But I have developed a survival technique for this which is: invite someone else to help sampling the food. The encouragement is needed mostly for the work out part of the process. At least, my gym is in the basement of my office building and it is not really a sacrifice to go there.

Steve: you are also an inspiration for me!!! Go for it, lad!

Are we now the commando's who are getting fit? LOL I've been doing an aerobic dance class since about 1984. I took off about 2 years, and went back when I realized how much I missed it and needed it. Just recently, I've been getting so tired of carrying around the extra weight. I looked into treadmill training. I've seen some dramatic results from this. Unfortunately, the class is during my dance class. I won't give that up. I love that class. However, the girl in the weight room has set me up for an appointment to get me started on my own program! I start that on Sept. 10. I've also signed up for a Pilates class, that starts next week. Pilates is supposed to be a strengthening type of workout focusing on the abdomen and back, among other things. So, we'll see. I don't know that I have the dedication to stick this out. But, I've found as the last week or so has gone on, I'm not missing the sweets and extra snacks. So that's a very good thing! Everyone keep up the good work. Good luck to everyone just starting out! :D

Is this timely or what! I too am in definate need of a Disney readiness program. For the last 6 months, we have been undergoing a home addition project. This has not lent itself well to eating right or exercising. Lots of quick meals and take out.

Well, the good news is we finished today! (Okay, there is still some decorating to do, but my sofa has come out of storage and the TV!!! It is a very big deal for us because we lost our living room to storage 4 months ago!!!)

So, now that that is better, it is time to start taking better care of me. (DH has a physical job, and gets plenty of exercise!)

My goal is to walk at least 2 miles 4 times a week by the time of the convention. Starting tomorrow, I will start walking with my dogs each day. Good luck to all!

I'm exercising my right arm for DATW, my lungs for screaming on RnR Coaster, my stomach for surviving RnR Coaster, and my smile for hosting the Beavertail Meet.

I'm also packing clothes that have a large percentage of lycra.

I already lost 10 pounds for my sisters wedding and I would like to loose 10 more before the convention (20 more would be better.....). So, no snacks for me and I'll try to continue using my bicycle instead of my car (cycling to work is about 6 miles a day). Unfortunately, the weather forecasts show lots and lots of rain this week:rolleyes:

Wow, sounds like a lot of people are really getting on this. I was at the store yesterday, and found no-fat, no sugar ice cream. Vanilla/raspberry swirl and Creamsicle (Dreyer's brand). YUM! You really don't taste the difference, and there's no weird aftertaste.

Tonight I'm going to Stuart Anderson's Black Angus for dinner. That should test my resolve. No Chocolate Mountain Fudge cake for me!

Off to walk Bandie..... :D

Wait for me!!! :)

Actually, my DH and I walked today for about 1/2 mile. Folks that may not seem very far, but, when you are my size, it's better not to push it too much when you haven't exercised regularly for a while.

I hope the weather holds out here, I'm taking the kids to walk this evening. I know that I HAVE to get in better shape before DIS CON, or I'll be spending time and $$ on a wheelchair. I keep that option open, but I sure don't want to have to!!!!

Two years ago I lost 80 pounds over a year. I loose VERY slow!! But I walked and did water aerobics, and had a life changing experience. I changed my diet and after about four months on a plateau, I just quite trying to loose more :(
Now that I have some extra time, I will undoubtedly start back exercising and perhaps reach my goal for WDW which had originally been, 100 pounds. (from two years ago)

Even if I don't loose a single pound, I'll feel better about myself and have more energy!
Thanks for any support here. I know the rest of you guys will do great and loose weight.

Dear Gerri! Way to go! I also lose veeeeery slowly and gain pretty quick. That means that I have to be always on guard, because of all the eating I have to do for my job. It is a bore when you reach that plateau!!! That is why WW and many doctors advise people not to look at the scale too much. I am sending lots of pixie dust your way!!!

Here's a DIS exercise program:

1.) Run up and down the stairs in front of your library.
2.) Lift four 12 oz. cans of corn.
3.) Jump over 5 bones from turkey legs.
4.) Lift 5 refillable mugs (filled with your favorite sports drink).
5.) Run in S-curves and imagine that you are in a queue line.
6.) Wander around the mall parking lot to get ready to find your lost car in the WDW parking lot.
7.) Dodge bikes in your neighborhood to prepare for a walk around the Boardwalk.

Add 1 can of corn, 1 bone, and 1 mug per week.

:)

Boy, you are all such amazing inspiration! I actually only gained back 1/2 pound on the Labor Day weekend. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself! But, now, I have to be extra careful. We're leaving for Chicago tomorrow morning and won't be home until Sunday. That means all those meals will be eaten at restaurants! I am hoping the hotel will have an accessible treadmill. I can put that to good use. Keep up the great work, everyone! You are all a great source of motivation for me!! :D :D

Love your exercise program, Barry! DH has been going out walking all summer. He finally got me to join him about 2 wks ago. I figured I'd better if I expect to keep up with the ThrillRides Tour! So far I'm going just over a mile, but I'm trying to go a little farther and at a faster pace each time out. So far my legs really hurt while I'm walking but I do feel really good afterwards. I hope I can stay motivated to do keep walking, especialy as the weather gets colder. I'm counting on you DISers to help keep me going.

I only walked a half hour tonight :( But this time I wore my running shoes and my little toes on my left foot got sore/tingly/cramped/etc. so I came home. :(

I'll wear my sandals tomorrow night and walk 'til the cows come home......or for about an hour. ;)

BelleMom

Tia: Are you wearing sandals to do your walking? It is usually easier on your feet to wear a good pair of sneakers with socks. Anyway, if them shoes hurt your feet... I liked that "till the cows come home'....I will try to use it here, in Portuguese and see how people react. :D

Hi Livia.

I wore sandals the first night and my gym/walking shoes tonight......I find my sandals more comfortable, but I know that my gym/walking shoes give me more support. I think I just need to loosen both pairs! I have BIG Hawaiian feet.....LOL :D

At WDW I wear my Echo sandals.......I swear by them! They let your feet breathe all day.....therefore allowing for more comfort....IMHO. ;)

My mom and my DH wore sandals to Disneyland this Spring and they couldn't believe how much MORE COMFORTABLE they were!!! :) :) :)

But I think I better stick my gym/walking shoes for my 'work out' :D :D :D

I have walked 45 minutes today at the threadmill and lifted weights! It takes a while to get used to the routine.

OK....I have PROMISED myself every day for the last week that I was starting my diet the next day. Well...Tomorrow is really going to be that day:) I bought a swim suit on clearance and can not possibly wear it unless I drop 20lbs before DIS-con...my other suit is WAY too big now so I am forced to either gain or lose weight. My self-esteem could not stand to gain more weight.

It certainly doesn't help that my SO has no problems in this area what so ever. He is 5'11'' weighs 168lbs and wears a sz 32-33 waist pant....the SAME freaking size for the past 20 years!! He eats what ever he wants...never works out...just natuarally trim! well you can always do a powerwalk around the lagoon at the CB each morning or evening. But you might want to save your energy for the parks.

I'm really not sure what motivated me to start up again. Maybe it was because I couldn't fit into my clothes any more, and was tired of having to go out and buy new stuff for my ever-expanding waistline. Thanks for all the encouragement!

Actually, I won't loose any weight, I will just get in better shape to do all the WDW walking. I don't always share this, but in 1999 I weighed 350 pounds. No, that's not a typo. I hit a brick wall when I tried to ride a ride at Six Flags Over Texas and didn't fit. (Long story and VERY EMBARRASSING!) I had tried dieting, exercising and starving myself when I started to research Weightloss Surgery.

Extreme I know, but I was desperate! I was living my life from the sidelines and I had to make some changes. There was so much promise in the WLS and I did loose weight, for the first time since I was a teen. (I took phen phen for four months and only lost 17 pounds. Worked out two hours five days a week and lost only 17 when others around me that didn't even work out lost 40 +)

I had a VBG 12-99. It changed my life, BUT, I didn't loose as much weight as many others that had the surgery due to several late diagnosis of thyroid problems :( and insulin resistant. So here I am, I self paid for this surgery and only lost 80 pounds. Although that may sound wonderful, to WLS patients, that isn't very successful. I do feel better, and I can walk now where I couldn't before, but I haven't been able to loose a single pound in over a year of being on a plateau and trying now.

So I won't loose any weight, (though that of course would be nice), but I will hopefully be able to vacation without having to rent a wheelchair. Boy, the things we take for granted!

Sorry this was so long, and some of you may be repulsed that a fat women would have surgery, but I've had a life change that has changed many things about myself, including not being ashamed of myself. I have a strong will, commitment and I cheerlead to others when I get a chance.

GO GO GO Steve, and Livia!! Robin, remember that it's a second across the lips and almost forever on the hips :) (We have a fantastic cafeteria in the bldg that serves breakfast, lunch and SNACKS...it's less than 2 minutes to walk there.)

Have a wonderful day, I'm ready to leave to walk w the kids.

Dear Gerri,

You are soo wonderful! I am sure you have plenty of good reasons to be in peace with what you see in the mirror. It is not just a matter of looking, but a matter of being. No one in the world should ever feel ashamed for being "fat" or "thin" or long nosed or simply for not being like Barbie! You are so great, so sweet, and at the same time I can also glimpse of this strong willed, committed woman in your posts, who is always surrounded with children and doing so much hard work! :)

I believe in exercising and eating balanced meals (when I am free of my job, that is) as a means of being healthier. I do have a pretty tough time losing any weight, but the difference in my mood when I do exercise is incredible. This time, I am trying to keep my eyes off the scale and see what happens.:bounce:

Just wanted to tell that I'm back on track after my trip to Chicago. I put a few pounds back on while we were there-too much good food and too many neat restaurants. We went to Bubba Gump's (what a great place with great food), Rainforest Cafe (when I close my eyes, I can pretend I'm in WDW), Harry Caray's (which was really, really neat-lots of TV's with lots of football), Morton's Steakhouse, and Gino's East (for a great DIS meet). I probably would have put on tons, if not for all the walking we did while we were there. I've managed to get the extra pounds back off and have to keep going. Anyway, I went to my first "appointment" in the fitness room at the YMCA. She is getting me started on a fitness program using weights. She showed me some upper body work outs during this appointment. I go back tomorrow for the next step. On Friday, I do my first complete run through. I also went to my first Pilates class last night. It was interesting. Here's the description: "Pilates is a mind-body, non-impact workout that combines core stabilization and visual imagery. Mat work calls for a carefully performed sequence of movements, contracting from deep within the abdomen and buttocks. Regular practice aids in flattening the stomach, relieving low back pain, increasing muscle tone, improving posture, and reducing stress." Well, if I did all that last night, that's pretty good. It was very relaxing, but I'm not too limber when it comes to some of the movements. I don't have a lot of upper body strength, so when we do things that need arm support, I find that hard. However, I can see where this would work. I'm going to keep this up for at least this session (8 weeks), if I can. I will evaluate whether or not I want to continue after that. So, I'm a roll here. Now I have to stick to it!!

I have stopped taking Hydroxycut for losing weight. I wasn't having any trouble until Sunday when I took a trip to the emergency room. I couldn't walk upright because it felt like my stomach, kidneys, etc. were going to explode. Diagnosis: severe dehydration caused by Ephedrines (an ingredient in Hydroxycut), not drinking gallons of water each day, and stress caused by the events of last week.

I'll still try to keep to my low-fat routine, but no guarantees. I'd rather have my health than lose another 7 pounds.

Goodness Steve! You are so right! 7 pounds is NOTHING compared to your health!

Take it from the Queen of every diet known to man, some of them make you feel sick, some of them make you sick, and some of them can even kill you. Just eat healthy and exersize. Even if you don't loose weight, you'll feel healthier.
BTW, as you know, I had WeightLoss Surgery. One of the keys to being successful is drinking 96oz. PLUS an additional 20 for every 20 pounds overweight. That was the hardest post op perscription for me. I've known people who just upped their water intake and lost weight without even dieting. Of course I'm not one of those people :) but drinking more water everyday does make a difference.

I've been drinking SO much water lately I think I'm going to float away. Hopefully I'll be back in shape by tomorrow morning. So much to do, so little time!

10 more days to go and I'm off to the World! This will shock you, Gerri. I haven't even started to pack. ;)

Steve... DRINK DRINK DRINK!! Keep up the good work.

When people look at Dan and I can see the cunfusion in their eyes.
He's thin and 46.... perfectly dressed, hair always just right, nevere a spot or stain

I'm chunky and 22.. I put my DD first, so that means less than designer clothes, hair pulled back in a pony tail so I have time to make breakfast, and almost always a spot somewhere. I have also been know to where nonmatching sock in a pinch!

The really odd thing is that I have MS and people are always asking what I would do if he were to get sick. Um... the same he does for me:) :)

WHAT!!! Steve, you've not started packing yet? OMG!! I'm already packing for our Nov trip.
I'm so afraid that I'll forget something. I'm making a packing list and checking it twice. Gonna find out whose naughty or nice. (oops, I got a bit carried away :)

I know what you mean about the water! I have to buy water for myself by the gallons and drink, drink and run to the little girls room
And Robin, we are more alike than you could know!

My kids are always dressed nice, even in designer jeans and shoes, but I'm pretty much a Wal Mart kind of gal :)
And here I thought I was the only one who on occasion will wear unmatched socks. :)
Gerri:rolleyes:

Dear Friends,
I have been offline. My computer was sick. And I was sicker. I got myself a bad kidney infection. And it's become much worse because of an acute case of aneamics (sp) I didn't know I had. Boy, it is so bad that it really scared me: my doc says that I am on the verge of needing a blood transfusion.
I was out of myself with pain monday and half tuesday. I started to get better and started to miss you all really bad. I got somebody from the telephone company today, and bingo, they managed to nurse my telephone line back to health. I am at home, must have absolute rest for a week (this means to me working at home _ I still responds for 2 magazine specials due to the next 2 weeks), I am taking this nasty antiobiotics that make me feel sick of my stomach, but I am really much better. Doc be
Steve! What a scare! Please, don't take medication for losing weight! Ephedrine can make your heart speed up. It is considered doping (remember Maradona, the Argentinian soccer player?) in sports. It is not worth the risk for seven pounds, pal!!!! And I know very well what you must be feeling about the water. Yes, I have to drink liters and litters a day. I feel that I am more a fish than a woman these days.

The diet is officially OFF as of this morning......but I'll still look good (he said modestly). :D

Don't have any plans as of right now to meet up with any DISers when I'm there in October, mostly because everything has been so tentative as of late. I'll have to check the Magic Meetings page.
