Progress may doom attraction
Fans of the Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney World – that’s the “CoP” to die-hards – have fretted for years that it may close permanently. One of the park’s older attractions, it is only open on a seasonal basis. Now there’s renewed talk that it may be demolished to make way for something fresh. Asked about that latest rumor, a spokesperson for Walt Disney World said “the plan is currently to keep it as a seasonal offering,” adding there’s nothing to announce “at this time.” Stay tuned.

I'm a fan of CoP and would hate to see it go simply because it is one of the few remain links to Walt. However, if Walt were alive, IMO he would have replaced it years ago with something more relevant or more "cutting edge".

There has been a lot of talk about a 5th gate. I personally think it would be cool to open a retro or "greatest hits" type park. It could be a home for rides like CoP, 20K, Toad, Horizons, etc. The nostalgic value of a park like that could be priceless. How many parents or grandparents would love to take the kids back in time, to the Disney of their youth.

If they are going to demolish it then why are they refurbishing the carpets etc. It doesn't make sense. :confused3 Disney wouldn't waste the money involved. I wonder if maybe they plan on moving it somewhere else in WDW. I wish they weren't so secretive. COP is a "Walt" classic. It will be a sad day if it ends up in the scrap heap.

This would really be an awesome park to have, but I don't think Disney would ever consider it. In terms of CoP, I really hope it doesn't go away forever. I think if they put a little more effort into keeping the ride up to date, the ride could exist forever. Right now, the "current" part of the carousel is more like an early 90s version, with most of the "technology of the future" already available. A lot of people argue that this is a problem with the end of Spaceship Earth as well, but with more and more attractions lacking sponsorship, I think it's harder to keep these rides updated and running correctly.

The site is down as our server has had a major crash. A new server is being purchased at the considerable expense of the owner, and we look forward to being up in a few weeks. Also, one of the sites anonymous contributors is presently in the hospital after sustaining several potentially life threatening injuries, so that is also having an effect on the return.

I have been saying the same thing for years. However, if the 5th gate rumor I keep hearing is true, Disney will likely build a "thrill" park in order to keep people away from IOA. Lots of coasters, villains and thrill rides geared to those who love them.

D-Troops has been 'off line' (regretably) since shortly after the conclusion of the Save Disney campaign.
