2 Way Communicators Tips

We have two way communicators , but not the ones with sub-channels . Any tips on how to get by with the these ( no budget for upgrading to the other kind ) ? Any one else with this experience ?

I think the best thing to do is have a predetermined back up channel in case you start getting a lot of traffic on the one you're using.
