:grouphug: The whole of the London Underground system has been shut down folllwoing power surges at at least 4 stations. People have been injured at least one seriously. Please pray for those people and their relatives, especially those that are unable to contact their loved ones. :grouphug: Just discovered that power surges have caused explosions.

I think one has to question whether or not this was in fact a power surge, given the bombs on buses. We also have to wonder if it is linked to yesterdays Olympic announcement.
What a sad world we live in.
Frances999

Fox news are saying they believe it to be an intentional attack. It is too early to tell at this stage, let's just hope there are minimal casualties/fatalities.

I think that the explosions on buses point to something more sinister than a power surge but I hope I'm wrong. At this stage all I'm doing is hoping and praying that fatalities and injuries are kept to a minimum.

This is awful. It's horrific that people can do this, I hope the reports of fatalities are exaggerated. :( People can be truly evil sometimes...
On a far less important point, me (and tens of thousands of others) are meant to be travelling to London tomorrow morning for the Queen concert - many are already in London. Now everyone's in a panic about whether it will even happen, how to get there if it does and whether to risk going just for a concert?

I am stuck in London as we 'speak'. It is total chaos. I come into London Liverpool Street and by the grace of God managed to catch an earlier train this morning so just missed the first explosion. I and hundreds of others are stuck as London has pretty much come to a standstill. All undergrounds have closed, all busses have been stopped, cars are not being let in or out and all trains are now being brought to a standstill. Hotels are now getting booked up very quickly.
I have been on the phone all morning as part of my job is accounting for a team of 13 and am exhaused however I'm alive and well, as is everyone I work with, unlike a lot of unfortunate people, my thoughts are with them and their families.
Hope I can get home tomorrow.

It's the least of our worries now, isn't it? Put things in perspective.I understood the earlier poster's point: The purpose of this attack is clearly not to defeat the United Kingdom by killing its citizens one-by-one. Rather, it is to weaken the resolve of the British people, so that they surrender without being defeated. Causing economic harm is the most effective tool terrorists have for extending the impact of their attacks beyond the harm they can inflict in-the-moment. If they were just looking to kill lots of people, there were weaker-defended targets, where they could have killed hundreds all at once. The timing and location of these attacks were deliberate, to affect the G8 summit, to affect markets, etc. It is very important to give these terrorists their proper respect: They're not idiots, and although they may be radicals, they do consider many aspects in the targets they choose.

My DH and MIL work in the City (both are fine, thank God). DH bought a bike a few months ago as he had a feeling something like this was going to happen. He now doesnt have to use the buses or tubes.
Reports from the scenes are that everyone is actually quite calm and heeding the advice of the Police Chief, which is to stay put and not to try and leave the city.
DHs boss has evacuated the whole office to the pub (they overlook several tourist attractions) but the pub is tucked away down a back alley. They are making the best of it till they can leave. Lots of spirit up there right now, but of course thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones.

That's what's so awful - that everyone knew it was inevitable but impossible to prevent. I find it really scary that the people behind this no doubt think they are acting on behalf of their god - what a terrifying god that must be who they believe demands such barbarity. And how can we ever persuade them that this is not the right way to treat other human beings?

I understand that & I wasn't having a go at Frances999's post. I was just trying to make the point that, at times like this, the previous discussions on here about the rate of the $ to the £ seems so irrelevant.

And how can we ever persuade them that this is not the right way to treat other human beings?I think it would be useful to consider the enemy's perspective on your statement and question. I'm not sure, but I suspect that they'd question our insistence that our actions in their part of the world are justified, either by natural law or by our religious beliefs (as diverse as they may be). They'd refer to their people dying at the hands of forces that they'd claim we control, and would expect us to offer them an answer to the question you ask with regard to their actions about our own actions. They'd consider their actions far less barbarous than our actions.
I'd disagree with them, and would find our actions utterly defensible. However, looking at it through their point-of-view may help folks better understand why things like this happen, and perhaps understand why addressing the issue from the standpoint of "How can we make them realize they're bad people?" won't be effective.

The messages from our friends in America are very much appreciated, not only on this thread but others on the boards :grouphug:
Working in a school, we have been very busy with calls from anxious mums to let their children know their dads who work in the city are ok (we're only a couple of hours commute distance and many people from our area work in London); it's such a worrying time.
These terrorists aim to cause the most amount of disruption - not only travel, but financial too.
We hope everyone is safe.

Thank you to all our friends in USA for your kind words. London is at standstill today and many of the cell phone networks are not working. I have been really frightened to go by tube since September 11th. Was really worried while I was at Live8 on Saturday. I am thankful my friends and family are safe this afternoon, but know others are not so lucky.

Hope and Blessing to all of you in the UK.
My SIL woke me up early this morning here in the USA to ask if my DD was still in London... Thank goodness she left for the Cont. 2 days ago as she was working very near where all this happened. However her BF's younger brother is in Richmond and we all had a very worried time till we recieved word he is ok. If he had not decided to go home last night instead of going to a party he would have been on the tube when the bombs went off!
It shows how far reaching a tradegy this is, mostly for all of you in the UK, but it still effects some of us personally in the USA. And that did not come out quite right, sorry.
I am very pleased that the London Police/Security/Fire has done such a fine and effective job of dealing with the attacks. It is a great blessing that you have such wonderfull people working for these agenicies.
Prayers , hope and blessing to all of you in the UK. I am amazed at the images we are watching on CNN and the order and controll of traffic and the way all the people in London are working together. Most of the images we are seeing right now show empty streets, extremaly efficent workers and civilians getting out of the way of emergency works in a timely fashion. You are all a good example for the rest of the world on the best way to face and deal with horrid events! I do not think many others would be as well behaving in the face of this event. Sorry this rambles, it is hard to get across the harsh emotions this event has brought out in me.

I was just trying to explain to DS10 and DD8 what a terrorist is. My DS said that after what happened on 9/11 he hoped he would never hear the word terrorist again. We live about 35 minutes by rail from where the blasts happened - we know so many people who may have been caught up in this horror.
Thanks to all our friends in America for your sincere and welcome support. We must not be crushed by evil, whatever guise it takes on. Why can't Humankind be guided by the example of a leader like Ghandi rather than settle for the likes of Bin Laden?
We all deserve to live peaceful and constructive lives, lets hope we don't have to live in terror. :grouphug:

I think it would be useful to consider the enemy's perspective on your statement and question.
Yes, I do understand what you're saying. So the next question is, what can we do to help both sides understand the other's point of view and hopefully take steps to break down barriers? Is that possible? Well, it's got to be if we can ever hope to stop this sort of thing happening.

I know I'll never forget 9/11 and I'll always be grateful for the British standing with us. We will stand with you.
Just talked with my sister. She has a dear friend who works in the financial district in London. He is ok. She said he got to work at 9:05 and had a short walk from the underground to his office. The blasts happened about 8:55 so he just missed them.
Prayers for everyone there.

Sadly this is a day that, deep down we always knew was coming. How can people have so much hatred in their hearts that they can do this to innocent people?
Apparently one of the bodies recovered from the bus explosion has the same injuries that would be expected to be found on a suicide bomber - how do you deal with people like that?

what can we do to help both sides understand the other's point of view and hopefully take steps to break down barriers?I'm not sure "they" want to. The Taliban, for example, had the intention of destroying Western culture and establishing a global Islamic regime -- non-negotiable in the same way that some social conservatives treat the abortion as a non-negotiable issue. How does one address such intransience, with an objective of bringing two sides together?

This is awful. It's horrific that people can do this, I hope the reports of fatalities are exaggerated. :( People can be truly evil sometimes...
On a far less important point, me (and tens of thousands of others) are meant to be travelling to London tomorrow morning for the Queen concert - many are already in London. Now everyone's in a panic about whether it will even happen, how to get there if it does and whether to risk going just for a concert?
According to CEEFAX, the concert has been postponed

Another thank you for the messages of concern and support. It took me a bit longer to get home from work tonite but at least my family was safe and sound when I did. I gave my DD an extra hug.
My heart breaks for those killed and injured and for those whose lives have been irrevocably changed today (that's most of us, I think).

Gary: Could you please fix your signature -- it's distorting the screen for those of us with older eyes that we need to keep our screen resolution at 1024x768. Thanks. Just putting a carriage return between the two images should do the trick.

You know, it's amazing. This morning, I was awakened by hearing my sister answer the phone and saying, "Did you hear the news?"
4 years ago this September, I awoke to my father saying to me, "Did you hear the news?"
I would like to stop waking up to these words. :(
To everyone in the UK, your support and friendship has been so encouraging and uplifting throughout the last few years. I'm so sad it's now time for us to return the favor, but I'm glad we can show our friends abroad that we care deeply for you and pray for your safety and strength.
