It is a nick-name for the Leave a Legacy concrete "tombstones" :)
I think just about every one has agreed that this is the uglyest thing that Epcot has ever done. They had good intentions, but the design ...Well.....the things look like tombbstones!
Bring back the gardens!!!! :)

The best description I’ve ever read was – “the place looks like a monument to all the people killed when the giant ball rolled off its base during Hurricane Andrew”.

Oh man....I agree....the leave a legacy looks like a world war monument of soldiers killed in battle. That was a terrible idea Disney came up with. What a waste of space!! Please take the dead bodies away!!!!! It's giving me the creeps!!

I had my portrait taken with my wife in 1999 during the christmas holiday. My wife was pregnant at the time with our first child(unbeknownst to me). Every visit since then brings back wonderful memories of that trip, and the subsequent good news that came after it. Whether some folks hate it or not is of no concern to me. That monument, if that's what you like to call it, has a very special meaning/connection for a lot of folks who participated in the program. While I do agree that they could have done a better job with regard to landscaping the surrounding area, I am very happy we had our portraits done. I'm so much looking forward to the day when my daughter is older and I can show the portrait and explain how she was at WDW with mommy and daddy during Chrismas/New Year 1999/2000.

I'm glad others share my thought of how crappy it looks!

Good idea, just not what you would expect from Disney in regards to archetectual design. I do agree that it is wonderful that many people participated; I wish we had, and it does leave a terrific legacy to visit year after year... it's just so .... unattractive:(

Don't worry, eeyore, it looks like you'll be able to participate for a looooong time to come - they are currently filling less than two plaques a month, and the monuments aren't even 50% filled yet.

I too shudder everytime I come through the entrance to EPCOT. I miss the gardens terribly. Yes, there are fond memories for some and I don't want to spoil that, but I feel Disney's leave a legacy was only put in to provide more revenue to Disnay and to provide less maintenance, therefore spending less money on Disney's part. I just wich they would use their creative talents and incorporate more flowers at the entrance again. Between the massive rocks, the changes to the outside of spactsihp earth, and the circus-like information center there is too much clutter. I'd just like to take time to smell the flowers, but, as the years pass, they're getting harder and harder to find.
