View Full Version : A little more fuel on the PoC movie-ization of the attraction rumor

Yesterday, I was sitting in the lobby of Blue Bayou and my duaghter struck up a conversation with two ladies sitting next to us. Turns out they were from Orlando and came over on the cruise. We started discussing the DL and WDW pirates and one of the ladies mentioned that there was an imagineer on board the ship who discussed the Sparrow/Barbossa additions to the attraction. He said that it was highly likely to take place at WDW, but may not happen at DL. His rationale for the additions was that kids who see the movie and then take a trip to WDW will expect the attraction to mirror the movie, especially when the film becomes a franchise after II & III are released. That's pretty weak. But, aparently it has gotten the traction it needs.

So let me try and understand the logic here: WDW will get the Depp version because kids on the best coast will expect it after watching the movies but kids on the left coast won't care what they ride after watching the same movies ?

I always thought it was "movie-fication", not "movie-ization", but that's me.

Anyway, if this is done as part of a rehab to the ride, I don't mind too much, but if they close it down for a while and only do this, it will be annoying. The thing probably does need a rehab, at least according to some I have read here. It didn't seem that bad to me last time I was through it, but some have sharper eyes for messes than I do.

We were also on the repositioning cruise and listened to the talk. They are talking about changing both of the rides in WDW and DL. Here is the thinking for it.

Not all people are crazies like us who visit Disney frequently, we met a lady on the cruise who had not been to Disneyland and she was in her 40's. Most of us understand that the movie was because of the ride and was inspired by it. Many people who have only seen the movie show up at the ride expecting it to be a takeoff of the movie and are disappointed when it is not, especially the kids we were told.

They are talking about tastefully adding the characters to the beginning and end of the ride and perhaps references to them throughout the ride, but knowing that Disney enthusiasts will want to keep it as close as possible to the original attraction.

The movie being as popular as it was, which was not expected until dailys started showing up, has really created a dilema for them, and with the sequels 2 and 3 being filmed right now it will only get worse.

I don't see what the fuss is all about. The movies will certainly become part of the PoC culture, whether they're added to the ride or not. And if the ride is refurbished and starts to include a few references to Jack Sparrow, that only enriches it.

I agree that the ride could use a refurb. I'm on the fence over whether I want Sparrow introduced to it or not. What IS, however, driving me crazy is not knowing when the refurb will take place!!!!! My family keep asking if PoC will be open for our upcoming trip and I have to keep saying I don't know!!!!! :rolleyes1

I just returned from WDW and took the KTTK tour. Cory told us that PoC will be closed some time this year....he wasn't sure when....and will be closed for a year to year and a half and being changed to go along w/ the Johnny Depp version.

I can see them wanting the close the attraction to do a major rehab the ride does need it however why would they close a popular attraction like that at this time given the happiest celebration stuff you would think they would want to wait till that is over or wait to unvail it with the premier of PoC 2 which i thought there was a rumor going around that this time they were going to be doing the premier at WDW because they had it at DL last time... just a thought...

I totally agree with JCTigger.....they should wait till the Celebration is over to refurb such a classic attraction...I'm going to be really upset if it's closed this January :confused3 and it looks like there is a pretty good chance it will be.

The people who run the parks are very savvy. They can understand just as well as the rest of us that the anniversary celebration is a bad time to close PoC for rehab. If they're doing it anyway, then it has to be done for mechanical or safety reasons.
