As we get ready for our trip, I still can't make up my mind on what I want our shirts to say/look like! I have two sets of shirts ($3 and $4 thanks to Wal-Mart!) in case I mess up or can't decide! I have a bleach pen and special printer transfer paper. I'll be sure to post mine by the end of the week when I finally decided what to create!

Inspire me and the rest of us! Show off your WDW trip garb!

I was going to wait to see other peoples before I showed mine. But I guess I will take the opurtunity to brag. I made these for our trip last May. We had many people, including cast members ask where we got them. We all had one, but as you can see the pre-teen refused to cooperate.

Now that I went first I want to see some other ideas I can use on out upcoming trip for Halloween.

I'm planning on making shirts for my girls that say I heart mickey's head, but I went to Walmart and Joann's and have not found any great material with pictures of mickey or minnie on it. Any Idea's.

I am really making the same shirt that Amber (Rob and Amber- Survivor, Amazing Race) wore when on Regis and Kelly.

I made an iron-on transfer for DD's bday trip a week and a half ago. (sigh... it's so sad to be back) Anyway, here's what the transfer looked like. I centered it on the front of a white tank top.

Our shirts were very similar to the ones posted by cujochurch (though those came out better than mine).

Lightly draw the Mickey head shape with pencil on the shirt. Then using a heavy weight thread and a long running stitch (about the same length as you would baste with), outline the Mickey head. Pull the ends of the thread to gather the material together and tie dye in strips.

also to get that awesome color - use the special dyes that are sold for tie dyes, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's carry them, RIT dye is ok, but not the vibrant color that I love!!

We get all of our dyes from Pro Chemical Dye out of Mass. The are professional clothing dyes and the colors are very very vibrant. There are also some setting chemicals that you should use to help the colors stay vibrant.

I'd love to have instructions on how to do the Mickey head....

I am so glad you all liked them. I will explain best I can. It really isn't that hard.

First you will need the dye. I got a kit at Michaels that came with the instructions, dye, squirt bottles, soda ash, gloves, and rubber bands. Get 100% cotton shirts. That is very important so that you get vibrant colors.

Take the shirt and draw a mickey head in pencil, on the shirt. I made a pattern on papper first and then traced along the edge. You will then "sew" the pattern. Use a needle and thread. I got a waxed thread at Michaels to make sure it didn't take up the dye. Sew a 1/4" - 1/2" basting stitch along the pencil line. A basting stitch is a very simple stitch that goes up & down through the fabric. Only go through the front of the shirt if that is where you want the mickey to be. If you want it on front and back. Do each side separtely. After stitching along the complete line, knot it, and pull it tight, so the fabric gathers in a bunch. Make sure the inside of the Mickey is poking outward. Pleat the rest of the fabric, so that you have a long snake like tube. The more careful you are with pleating the fabric along the length of the shirt, the better the final result. Go easy, and take your time. Wrap a rubber band around the threaded bunch. The tighter the tie, the more defined the outline of the mickey will be. Place remaining rubber bands in 1"-2" intervals along the rest of the shirt. It is a little hard to explain, but when you are done you will have a long snake. One end is the mickey on front of shirt and the other end it the back mickey. Through the middle is the rest of shirt (arms, neck etc.).

Then follow the instructions in the kit for preparing and dying shirts. The squirt bottles make it possible to get the specific color where you want it.

I will be glad to answer and questions if I didn't explain it well enough.

I love those tie dye shirts...VERY creative and what a good job you did making those! I think I know what my project will be for our next Disney trip. ;) :)

This is what was on our shirts when we went last month. I used different colored shirts for eveyone and color coordinated the transfer to go with each one. It doesn't show up well in the picture but I used silver fabric paint with glitter on the pixie dust around Tink to make it sparkle.

They were fun to make and we got alot of attention everywhere we went. 'People would often say oh your party just went that way' or 'we know who your with"

The anniversary shirts were noticed by a lot of CMs and we got a message from Mickey and Minnie wishing us a happy anniversary.

dd16's said, I asked for The World for my 16th birthday . . . AND GOT IT!! Walt Disney World - May 2005 Hers had Sweet Sixteen stamped on the back and everyone else's had Kayla's 16 Today! on the back. :wizard:

That's pretty much it. I found the castle on one web site and the characters on another. The two fonts were also downloaded from two different web sites. (Of course, I forgot to bookmark all those sites or else I'd pass them on!) The fonts were called Walt Disney Script and Minnie, I believe.

I put it all together in Photoshop, horizontally flipped the image (very important so the type wouldn't be backwards when it was transferred), and printed it on transfer paper. The ironing on stage was a little scary, but her shirt came out just as I had hoped.

I used printshop and a disney clipart that I found somewhere online. It was easy. The make sure that you use transfer paper for light colored T-shirts. We made some on Navy using the Dark transfer sheets and they have a white background around the picture. It is a different texture too, kind of rubbery.

On our last trip there was this big family reunion group that wore matching orange t-shirts- they said so and so family reunion on the front and on the back (like a football jersey) each person had the name of their favorite character. So it would say DOPEY or NEMO or TINKERBELL on the back. It was fun reading them all while waiting in line. :teeth:

I had to copy the clipart image into a document, save as a .jpg file and import into clipart. There may be an easier way, but that is how I did it for our shirts. I had another thought. If you can print anything with a design that you like you can scan it and save as a photo file then import it into printshop. That is probably the easiest way.

TheSchultzFive--Printshop doesn't support .gif files. You need to save the clipart in bitmap (.bmp) or jpeg (.jpg) format. Right-click the image that you are interested in, and select "save picture as". When the screen pops-up, there is a choice at the bottom, "save as type:". The default for those images is GIF (*.gif), but you can also choose Bitmap (*.bmp). Hope that helps!

Warning to tye dyers....if you use Ritdye you will not get the colors as shown in the pictures of the poster here. They just don't have the vibrance of dyes meant for tye dyeing and professional dyeing fabrics.

If you'd like info on speciality dyes PM and I'll give you the name of the company I order from..

I'm starting my process today ...when I'm done I'm going to try to have a step by step instructions...

Kimball--when you're done, I'd love step by step instructions. We have a crew of 13 going next February, and I'd love to try to make shirts for us......

I'm sending you a PM now

Nope, Thanks for trying bethbuchall but it still dosen't work. Just like karebear1 said, I do the "save picture as", when the box comes up I changed it to bitmap and hit save. I go to printshop and hit import and the pictures aren't there. there's just a symbol and when I click it it says something like "it's not supported". Anyone know what that means and how we fix it.

Sorry I can't help you out...I just went and tried it the way I wrote it, and it works for me. What version of PrintShop are you using? Maybe that's the difference. I have 5.0.

I actually stole the idea from a postcard they sell at WDW. I then recreated it in Photoshop. If you have Photoshop, you're welcome to download the template here. (http://www.premedium.com/images/tshirt.psd)
Thank you so much for sharing that! Now I just need to figure out which of our family photos should go in there...

What font did you use for the type you added? It seems like it's no longer editable text at this point, unless I'm missing something.

Are you a graphic artist, or do you just play one on TV? You seem very talented in Photoshop, and that's a hard app to learn (I should know, I've been struggling with it on and off for years). Great job!

I think I ended up rasterizing the text layers. Anyway, you should be able to delete those layers and create new text layers. Honestly I can't remember the font I used. I think Kaufmann would be pretty close. I was trying for an overall retro look.

While I'm not a professional graphic artist, it remains one of my passions like WDW. I am a professional photographer and as such I have to know how to use Photoshop.

For those not able to open the file, I suspect you do not have the full-blown version of Photoshop. It won't work with Photoshop Elements.

Have fun all.

I don't know if anyone has posted this or not but www.t-shirts.com is great for making your own t-shirts. They have a whole bunch of styles and some cool pictures too. You can even download your own picture from your hardrive. It's reasonably priced too. I think it's like $22 for a shirt that has a front and a back design but the more you buy the cheaper.

Do the shirts come EXACTLY as they preview on the browser? If the wording or photo is a little off center, will they adjust that for you? What was the quality of the shirt like and did they shrink a lot? It's really nice being able to upload your own image!

I actually just ordered my shirts today but I know that they will center the image/wording for you. I'm pretty sure they come exactly as previewed, but again I haven't actually recieved my shirts yet. I hope this helps, but I have no idea regarding the quality of the shirts but I'm hoping they're good because they sell other types of shirts as well, not only customer made.

Mine is called The Print Shop Premier edition 5.0. It is at least 6 years old. I am still surprised that your version doesn't support .bmp files. If you double-click on the file in Windows Explorer, what program opens the file? Maybe you have an option of saving it as a supported file type in that program?

I made everyone a t-shirt for a big family trip in August '03. Not everyone was thrilled to be wearing matching t-shirts though.....................

I bought some spray dye at Michaels, I forget the name but it was with all the fabric paints. I used five different colors and tryed spraying it on a dry shirt and wet shirt for different looks. I wound up using the wet application because it gave a look of watercolor to the shirts. I made a pattern on funfoam using plates to get the dimensions right. Then on the back I used a scene from the kids Disney Magic Artist cd rom, Cinderella castle with the monorail in the foreground. Using Disney font I wrote Mathews-Caswell-Engler World Tour 2003, wrapping the words over top of the castle.

For my kids birthdays last year I made birthday shirts. This one I made using Microsoft Picture It. It says "Celebrating five years of adorable faces" and on the back it says "I brake for cake" with a little picture of a birthday cake.

I was working on the clip art last night but I don't even know how to open it after saving it.

Here's the option I sometimes use to make designs for tees. When I have my clip art saved, I right click on it. From the menu that comes up, I select "open with". That brings up another menu & from that one I select "paint". Your clip art will appear & you can move it around, write your text, make color changes, etc. At the top of "paint" there is a help section that explains how to use the various functions. Maybe this will help those that aren't able to use Photoshop.

We did the tye-dye shirts with Mickey on them and they turned out great. We did a couple of medium size ones for the kids--they turned out the best. Mine and DH's were bigger so they didn't turn out quite as well. I guess we didn't use quite enough dye in the creases.I would post pictures but I don't know how. If someone could tell me how, I will post them.
It was alot of fun but took a while to do. We did it as a family though so that cut down on the time. It would have taken me forever if I had had to do all 4.

Time Estimate

1.Wash shirt.....25mins
2. Draw stencil....1min
3. Baste stencil....10mins
4. Soak in activator...10mins
5. Put on all rubber bands...10-15mins
6. Put on all the dye....10-15mins
7. Soak in Plastic bag 24hrs. (very important step)
8. rinse (I just throw it in the washer cycle by itself) 25mins.
9. dry..

I think as long as you're not selling them you should be fine. There are sites that have Disney images for you to use for whatever as long as it's for your own personal use not for profit. I could be wrong, but I'm sure someone on here will correct me if I am.

Claim: Disney forced the removal of murals featuring their cartoon figures from the walls of three Florida day care centers.

Status: True.

Origins: Disney discovered in 1989 that three Hallandale, Florida, day care centers had 5-foot-high likenesses of trademarked Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy painted on their walls, Disney threatened to go to court if the centers did not remove the drawings. The threat of legal action did not need to be carried out, as the centers replaced the drawings with cartoon characters belonging to Universal Studios Florida and Hanna-Barbera Productions,

It was in the back of my mind when I made DD's bday shirt but figured that Disney's copyright lawyers were highly unlikely to be wandering around MK that particular Saturday so I willingly took the risk. No one said anything at all about it.

A family creatively using the characters does violate copyright law, but I highly doubt Disney would be willing to take such "little guys" to court over it. Could you imagine the negative publicity if the "big bad corporation" went after a family that loves Disney enough to make shirts using their characters? Not to mention that said family would not have the resources to pay the type of fine warranted in typical copyright infringement cases.

If someone posed the characters in an obscene manner or with bad language, however, totally different story. Disney definitely does (and should) protect their characters' image from that kind of thing.

As a long time craft seller, I have personally seen Disney reps shut down 2 different homemade t-shirt craft concessions for using Disney characters on clothing. One was in Saybrook, CT and the other was in West Palm Beach, FL. The characters in CT were painted on onesies and toddler t-shirts. The characters in FL were painted on adult t-shirts. In both cases, the shirts were confiscated with no financial restitution made to the crafters.

Having said that, I seriously doubt Disney would do anything to people who have made shirts for their own personal use to be worn in the parks. However, I would absolutely not attempt to sell any of these shirts on ebay (as I believe one poster suggested).

Love all the dyed MM shirts. I went a different route- I used my embrodier sewing machine and a Disk with all the characters on it and made a bunch of stuff with embrodieried stuff on it. Did 2 dresses and several shirts.
I then wanted something for Flower and Garden, and used a free downloaded floral wreath desige. I put a big one in the center and then shrunk the same design and put 2 smaller "ears" on the big floral center. I make 2 shirts this way. One had a large floral MM head in the center. The other had 3 smaller floral MM heads across the front.
For sewing/embrodier machine users-
I used the designs that came with my embrodiery program and just made them into circles, sized the different designs in 2 sizes for each head and then combined stitches. I created 5 different floral MM head designs this way.
Also Brother Sewing machine company is the Authorized Disney dealer, and they have at least 5 different disks of designs for use. NOT resale, as I understand. And some programs will convert the Brother disks to any othe sewing machine laungage. I have a Viking Hus. Designer 1. and the editing software, and have done a lot of Disney stuff with it, all for personal use!
I also combined hand fabric painting with embrodiery Charactes for a shirt or 2. For a dress I used an Applique MM head and put "hidden" MM's on it, one on the sleeve and one at the hem line near a side slit.Lots of fun!, specially since the dress if lavender with lime pooka dots on it, and I used a lime fabric as the applique fabric.
I will try and figure out how to make the digital camera/computer work together- they seem to have "issues" with each other when I am trying to get them to work together!

Also if you want to tye dye shirts and then have MM heads on them you can make stamps out of fun foam and use Dyna-Flow or other fabric paint to stamp the design. After dyeing, washing and drying you would stamp the MM heads, and follow the directions. There are also several other products you could use. I have used the color changing powdered Pigments that are also used in a lot of other crafting area. As long as you mix the powers with a permant fabric paint, not dye, they work great.
I get a lot of my stuff from a web site called Darma Trading Comp. in SanRafeal Cal. Fast, fun, and very easy to work with. http://www.dharmatrading.com/

Also made a Cindy dress last year and used several heat set crystals on it. They do not wash off, and are used on wedding dresses and the Ladies Harley Davidson shirts. Lots of other stuff too.
http://www.suesparklers.com/
http://www.creative-crystal.com/
http://www.ejoyce.com/pmain?cmd=e_listmain

Both sites sell designs that have circles in different sizes that could make MM heads... or other designs. I like the 2 site a little more, they are some times cheaper and faster getting stuff to me.

great thread, and as you all can see, I love fabric, and fiber stuff! one can never have to much of it! for me it would be like to many trips to disney, and no one can ever go to many times!

Will you please post a report on them (on this thread) when they come in? I'd appreciate it!

Hey!

They came in and they are great quality. They came exactly as we made them on their site. My friend and I were worried about the design peeling off before we recieved them but after getting them, we are confident that they won't. Hope this helps. The delivery was pretty fast I thought too. I will definitely be using this site again!

This has the front of my sons shirt, without the pink ribbon trim.

HM...this could be done in reverse, I think. Why couldn't you cut out a foam mickey and spray the rest of the shirt? Would it be too much to spray, using too much product? (meaning too expensive) Will the spray dyes work on colored t-shirts I wonder?

I think on the other ones I'll use a little less color...the mickey head gets a little lost...

I will post pics of what each set looks like but I haven't got all the pics loaded on the web yet...

Time Estimate

1.Wash shirt.....25mins
2. Draw stencil....1min
3. Baste stencil....10mins
4. Soak in activator...10mins
5. Put on all rubber bands...10-15mins
6. Put on all the dye....10-15mins
7. Soak in Plastic bag 24hrs. (very important step)
8. rinse (I just throw it in the washer cycle by itself) 25mins.
9. dry..

Zurgswife ~ Thanks for the step by step instructions. Can't wait to see your other shirts. I thought the first one looked great. But how does the mickey head get color??

I love what you did with the spray dye!!!! I'm hooked...might have to try!!!!

I tried to make one for DH this last couple of days with the bleach pen...it's ok...I made the Mickey head tooooo big...one ear slightly bled through to the back because it wasn't dry when I removed the board to do the other ear...good thing the shirts were only $4 at Wal-Mart!!!

Back to the drawing board...with only two days to my trip!!!

What did you do with the bleach pen? I'm looking for something really easy to make for my family. Thanks.

billwendy...What a great friend you are. Those are awesome! I love the "We love" ones. Where did you get the pictures of the characters with open arms? When you make your own transfers how do they hold up? Do they usually last through several washings or are they a one wear only kind of thing? Thanks.

Here's a good way to find clipart for your projects. I use google image search and look for "disney clipart" in the "large" option. The larger the picture the better. Just remember, you can always scale down, but you can't scale up.
Google "disney clipart" large only (http://images.google.com/images?q=disney+clipart&start=20&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&newwindow=1&c2coff=1&sa=N&imgsz=xxlarge)

Also, try using other keywords like "cinderella" or "mickey mouse" in the large format.

If you want to make a stencile of MM head that won't let most sprayed dye in use Reynolds Freezer Wrap. It is very wide, white butcher paper on one side, and a film of plastic on the other.
You cut out the design with the shiny plastic side down and then use a very warm iron to temp. fix it on your shirt. Quilters/fiber artist use this a lot. It is about $3 a roll at most grocery stores.
Make sure you get the edges ironed down very well. You can also use die cuts to make stenciles and then iron them down.
I use this stuff a lot when I am making shirts as I can also iron it to the inside of a T shirt, front, back and sleeves , and dye or fabric paint won't go through to the back. The paper also stablizes the fabric so you will have a tirm/flexable surface to work on.
If you are spray dying a MM head iron a piece to the inside and then the MM head design on the outside. you can then do a front and back more quickly. It is not good for any type of dying that will be immerced in a lot of water.
Also if you cut a lot of smaller/different size MM heads and iron them on a shirt you can they spray the whole shirt and have white heads with a color background, or a "halo" effect if you angle the spray out from the head.
Or make the head one color and the outside halo a different color.
I spend to much time with fabric stuff! Need to go and do some work... thinking of making a jacket for WDW/Food&Wine that will have light up fireworks on it. Glow in the dark/color change threads are so great!

hi,

i did searches for disney clip art or specific characters,,,there are some nice ones out there!!! i used the iron ons for light fabric, they hold up okay but the brand i used from ac moore has been washed 2x and they are okay, just dont leave them wet in the washer, the colors will bleed a bit, but will then wash out in the next washing (found this out by accident). For the inexpensiveness of the shirts and the iron on's they are worth it!!

Ok for all your experts (there are some amazing ideas on this thread!) please humor a real beginner...

What do you do with the clip art. I understand that you save it to your pictures. Once you have it saved do you print & then use transfer paper, iron on the shirt & your done? Is that right if I just want to do an iron on from clip art? I wouldn't even dream of trying the tie dye!!!

Sort of. If the clip art has words in it or you want it to face the same direction it faces when you're looking at it onscreen, you will need to be sure to flip the image horizontally before printing. Otherwise, when you iron it on it will be backward. Some printers have a setting to do this. If yours doesn't, you'll need to flip it in your file. Do NOT do both or you will negate yourself.

Good luck! (PS: I'm also too chicken to try tie dyeing, but I love how everyone's designs came out!)

my tie dye did not come out - the shirt itself is gorgeous but no mickey - i think i did not gather enough fabric in the mickey when I was basting :(

well I was going to try again - I planned to sort of fold a layer in before I basted and I was also going to attempt to sew it with dental floss - thinking that since it was waxed it would resist the dye.... but I went to the rag shop to get more soda ash (I had bought the kit at michaels) and I found cold liquid wax to batik! So I just painted mickey head on the front and back and I will tie dye tomorrow (the wax has to set over night)

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Good detective work, Ziggy! That's exactly where I found it. (I recently started working with a travel agent as her Disney specialist in addition to my full-time job, which is how I got access to the web site.)

I'm really disappointed that I can't find it in a larger size, though. It's a great size for my signature, but I'd love it in a poster size so you could actually read the words and see the details of the different castles. I thought I'd find it at WDW when we went in May, but no luck. Please let me know if any of you find it as a poster or even a larger web image. Thanks!

Chim Chiminy, I LOVE your shirts!

For those of us who are tie-dye impaired, ;) I wonder if this Rit sunburst design (http://www.ritdye.com/virtual_sunburst.asp) could be done with three circles instead of one, to make the Mickey head...
http://www.ritdye.com/images/tri_T_sunburst_rose.jpg

This would work, but you would have three actual/distinct circles instead of one continuous outline of Mickey. Make sense? Think of it as drawing a Mickey head by drawing one large cirle, lifting up the pencil and drawing a smaller circle for an ear, lifting the pencil and drawing another circle/ear....or not lifting your pencil and drawing a complete Mickey head in one shot.

I think I might try this way...not sure if I would like the over-all look quite as much, but it would be easier....I've tie dyed this way before, but never with stitching. I like doing crafty things, but I try to avoid anything with a needle and thread!! LOL.

I'd love to see what people have been able to do with a bleach pen or the cold wax. I can't wait to try something for our November trip!

Great thread. Zurg's Wife, I hope you post a trip photo of your family in the shirts when you return!

You could always try it out on an old t-shirt. I did think about it when I did the shirts, but decided I just wanted the shirt design simpler I guess.
I did ten shirts, plus a couple test shirts, and used less then half the spray color in the bottles.

I love all the tye dye shirts.
Here is a web-site I found for all us folks that aren't so crafty.
http://www.mdmintl.com/
They have great tye dye t-shirts @ $3.75 each min. order 1 dozen.
You can mix sizes & styles.
I found it easier for me just to order the tye dye from them.
Than I just use either clipart or pictures to do a iron on transfer.
Here is a great web-site for Disney pictures.
www.themeparks.com.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to post my pictures.

We made the tye dyed Mickey shirts for our trip last week. When I get my pics developed I will post some more pics, but right now heres the ones on photopass. They are the last 2 on the list.

https://disneyphotopass.go.com/DPI/0/0/.TOP.System.Guest.SlideShow.aspx?sub=20412&iId=106552911

We did our DDs first and when we dipped the tip in the dye we got too much on and it really bled through the stitching. We used the squirt bottle on DS's and it worked much better. When we went to do mine, the floss kept breaking( instead of buying waxed thread I just used a double strand of waxed dental floss.) so it didnt turn out. And my DH wouldnt wear his if I didnt wear mine....so the kids just wore theirs.

I just got my July/August FamilyFun magazine yesterday. It has a craft project called "Solar Flare T-shirt". You make a mixture of flour and water, put it in a sqeeze bottle and use it to make designs on a t-shirt. When it's dry you spray it with fabric paints (Tulip brand). When the paint's dry you peel off the flour paste to reveal the design. DS9 and I are going to try this. Does anyone no where I can find that swirl Mickey image? I thought that would look cute on a shirt.

Can you post instructions for this???

Materials

Cardboard
White cotton T-shirt
1 cup of flour
4-cup measuring cup
Squeeze bottle
Fabric spray paint
Spray bottle

Cut cardboard to fit inside the shirt (keeps paint from bleeding through). Mix flour with water (should be consistency of mustard) in measuring cup right before you're going to apply it so it doesn't become gluey. Pour mixture into squeeze bottle and use it to draw on the shirt. Let it bake in the sun for a couple of hours until hardened.

Spray the shirt with fabric paint (Tulip brand) and let it dry in the sun. Remove cardboard, then peel off the flour paste to reveal your design. Wash shirt according to paint manufacturer's directions.

I'm not sure what the spray bottle is for if the paint comes in one already. ???

We bought our tie dyes and then had them all screen printed. We had this on the back and a smaller version of that with a circle around it on the front left chest. We bought 25 shirts (5 different ones for each person so we could wear a different shirt each day). We loved them and we got so many positive comments on them:)

It worked out great and now we have 25 souvenir shirts:) The shirts cost $4 each and the screen printing as a couple of dollars each. Not bad compared to the tshirts you buy at Disney world :)

Lynn, That is so neat that you saw us!!! Imagine that! Hope you had a great trip! I know we did! Those shirts really were fun and more importantly, they helped us in many ways while we were there. One being, finding each other easily. But the best probably was when the boys got picked for Jedi in Training. We were wearing the very brightest ones, the ones in the picture I posted. My oldest wanted to be picked for Jedi in Training sooooo bad. Out of everything on the trip, that seemed to be the thing he cared the very most about. When they were picking kids out of the audience, I was just praying that he would be picked. He was and so was his brother! I know the shirts had to help with that! I was so thankful for the shirts at that moment!

Ok, these are not as beautiful as all these others I've seen, but we had a ball making them and have got alot of comments. They've lasted pretty well also. They went with us in October, December and May. Here's a link to the picture on our page.

I hope this works. Hubby said it would, so if it doesn't, blame him!

PS. Michiele, I'm so glad your sons made it into the Jedi training. There were alot of kids trying. I'll bet those shirts helped!!

Jacksmom,
We got a kit from AC Moore (craft store) with spray bottles and instructions, but actually used Procion MX Dye because we heard it was the best. I cut a big Mickey head out of poster paper and sprayed all around it, just whatever colors I felt like. The little Mickey heads are from the paint samples from Home Depot.(If you pop them in the microwave for five seconds, the glue softens and you can peel them off the backing.) I used just a little color on mine so it's more pastel, while Hubby just soaked his with color so it is bright. There were steps on the box of how to set the color and all. It was so much fun. The neighbors came over to see what was going on in our courtyard.
Keep the ideas coming people!!!!

Do you have any kind of image editing software? And are you using Windows? If so, open your Word file and hit the Print Screen key - this will copy the image on your screen to your clipboard. Then open your image editing software, create a new file, and select Paste from the Edit menu (or click Ctrl+V) to paste the image into your document. Save it as a JPEG (.jpg) file and post it to the DIS Photopost site (http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/), and then you can link to it in your message.

I was going to wait to see other peoples before I showed mine. But I guess I will take the opurtunity to brag. I made these for our trip last May. We had many people, including cast members ask where we got them. We all had one, but as you can see the pre-teen refused to cooperate.

http://webpages.charter.net/doogiej/shirt2.jpg http://webpages.charter.net/doogiej/shirt3.jpg http://webpages.charter.net/doogiej/shirt1.jpg

Now that I went first I want to see some other ideas I can use on out upcoming trip for Halloween.

These are awesome! I must try. Did you do the baste stitch with a sewing machine with the waxed thread? Also, did you use individual colors or did you mix colors from the kit? I'm going to Michael's this weekend! I really like the color combos you used and the fact that so much of your shirt actually came out dyed. About how long did it take you to apply the dye to each shirt once you got it folded? I've read some of the instructions on the tie dye links but I'm still a little confused. Thanks in advance! Also, was this your first attempt or have you dyed before? (I'm a bit reluctant to try, but your shirts came out gorgeous, and I'm really inspired! :goodvibes )

I made a couple of shirts using the first shirt with orange background that you posted and my question is,
what kind of transfers did you use? I used the kind for dark color shirts but my pics came out really dark, some you can't hardly tell what pic is.

I don't know what to tell you. I'm sure it has to do with your printer settings. You'll probably need to experiment with different settings. I used the dark fabric type and they came out beautifully. I was actually surprised that the photos actually looked like photos.

Good Luck,

okwoodsmith - 2 questions please:
(1) seriously, are you a professional graphics designer? these are incredible!

(2) did you get any special attention for wearing your shirts? like did you get to be the grand marshals for a parade or anything? you should've for that kind of effort! ;)

p.s. love your logos too - november to remember, fun, food, & no whining tour!

1) No I'm not. I'm a teacher (statistics) and part-time photographer. Graphics design, however, is a passion of mine. I spend way to much time in Photoshop and soak up whatever books or magazines I can on the topic.

2) We weren't asked to be in any of the parades...we had a group of 12 which is probably too large for such...but YES we got lots of attention...especially with the design with our photos. CMs were very attentive and gave our kids a lot of special moments.

The funny thing is, we went with a group in March of this year and they didn't want to do t-shirts. They didn't want the extra attention. So we rolled with it had a great time looking less like tourists. It is amazing to me, however, how much more fun a trip can be when adults are willing to act like kids.

I took a picture of her and then erased all the background (in paint) and then pasted it into word - I then found clipart of each princess at this site http://www.geocities.com/disneyclipart/ and they are great - there is no background so you can overlap easily with it -

Ok, here are the shirts we made. I followed the instructions posted at the beginning of this post. The shirts we made for ourselves(DH and I) shrunk up alot so we couldnt wear them. Next time we will get shirts that are at least 2 sizes too big.

Our DDs shirt didnt turn our as good as this one. We dipped the tip in the dye and it was too much saturation, it bled through the stitching. This one we used a squirt bottle and it was perfect.

Im sorry this is so big, thats why I didnt post our DDs also. I can tfigure out how to resize it.

JimmieD, okay, so you can't use copyrighted or trademarked imagery or words, but you could use other images and abbreviations (WDW) and terms like "Makin' Magic with the Mouse." With your skill with Photoshop, you should seriously think about it. I've been playing around with your file, and I'm impressed. :)

For the December trip I'm using "Makin' Merry with da Mouse." I've been experimenting with layer styles using stroke and drop shadows, but I'm not entirely happy yet. But since I have a lot of time between now and December, it gives me something Disney to do! :goodvibes

Hi everybody - this is only my second post but I want to try to show you the t shirts that I made for my husbands 40th birthday in April. It is all done with iron ons, there were a total of 5 shirts done and there were three pictures per shirt. Each person's shirt was of baby pictures of my husband -- my MIL wore a shirt with her and my husband as a baby, my FIL wore a shirt with him and my husband as a baby, you get the idea. There were a total of 15 iron ons, so I naturally arranged the three in the shape of the standard "hidden mickey". Anyone that has done the Mickey Mouse tie dye (and I've seen your pictures!! loved them) Is it hard? Do you make mistakes before you get it "right"??

Did the waxed thread make a difference??? Anyone live nearby that I can watch you make them??? (ok j/k, just nervous!!)

The only mistakes that I made on our Mickey shirts was not leaving a little space between colors, and they bled a little too much. It still looked ok, just not as defined.

I think that I used waxed dental floss as my thread, since I already had that at home. I can't remember, though...if I didn't use the floss, I used regular heavy-duty (non-waxed) thread.

I think that they will look great no matter what! Even if it isn't exactly the result that you were going for.

I saw some of these at Wal Mart for $9.97...the very same thing was $13.99 at Jo Ann's. What I'm wondering is if these are the kits y'all are using for the tie dye shirts? (I can't recall the brand name.)

I saw three different kinds...one was called "vibrant colors", one was "primary colors", the other was "tropical colors". I think there are only 3 different colors in each box...are these the ones I should get?

idofabric
06-30-2005, 06:25 PM
They might be... the thing to look for is that the dyes are fiber reactive. My local WalMart has the same dyes as major craft chain stores. The box for both have a young person in a tye dye shirt on them. And the kit has the dye, soda ash, bottles and info on what to do.Fiber reactive dyes will give you the most permant, long lasting bright colors, even if you want pastels. And Fiber Reactive dyes are only good on natural fibers. So you want 100% Cotton shirts. They then need to be washed and dryed with out any fabric softners because fabric softners coat the fiber and will not allow the dye to penatrate the fabric. You can use everday all purpose dyes but will need to use heat to dye poly.fiber. Cotton Ts are the best to dye for home dyeing. And they breath best in the Florida heat.

Also the longer you leave the dye on the shirts( and they must be wet), the better the color yeild will be. Up to 36 hours for some dyes. But most will develope a good color that is permant in 4-24 hours. Then you need to rince, rince, and rince a few more times.. then wash and dry.

Sorry if this is more info then you wanted. I do a lot of fabric dyeing for costumes/quilts.

idofabric, I appreciate all that info. The more the better for me because I've never done tie dye before & I'm trying to learn all I can before giving that Mickey shirt a try, so thank you for the help and advice to use 100% cotton shirts!

The kits I've seen at my local WM have two girls (maybe in their early 20's??) on the front so it sounds like it might be a different kit than what you've seen at yours. Should it say "fiber reactive" or something similar on the box...or what exactly do I need to be looking for if it doesn't say that? I think I recall the instructions said to leave the shirts wrapped for 24 hours, then wash them.

I bought the t-shirts to tie dye at AC Moore tonight for $2 each-they 50/50. Will these t-shirts take the dye? If not, where to find 100% cotton t-shirts?

Also-if you are looking to buy the dye cheap-there is a seller on Ebay that is selling 42 different colors (Ebay name DEARLOVE). You can pick your own colors and make up your own kits (Kits for 6XL shirts are $5 for 4 colors, $1 each additional color and $4 for shipping no matter how much you buy). The ones in Walmart and AC Moore that I looked at only have 3 colors for $10. If I've calculated correctly-I can get 16 colors for $21 shipped.

Also-I am going to attempt a Minnie Mouse design-I'll let you know if it works out.

I'm making tee shirts that have only the mother on the front for us moms and only the daughter on the front for the girls and then on the back the 2 together with "Mother & Daughter Disney World Trip 2005" I have Lady and one of her girl puppies and Ariel and Melody for me and my DD and Pedita and one of her girl puppies and the Incredibles Mom and daughter (don't know the names) for my friend and her DD. For the third day tee shirts will have the Princesses (Belle, Cinderella, Aurora, and Snow White) separately and then I have a picture of them all together for the back again they will say "Mother and Daughter Disney World Trip 2005."

Hey, eeyoure and foxfire, glad to be any help.
It should say fiber reactor for the dye. If it doesn't that will still work, just follow the directions that come in the box.

Someone said that their MM head looked funny? I did the drawing class at MGM and the CM said that MM's ears were not perfect circles. They are a little flatten, a cross between a circle and an oval. That may help.

Since I have five months to go before the big WDW December trip and need something Disney to do :cool1: , I've been working on some t-shirt ideas that were inspired by this thread. This is the first time I've tried to post a photo, so I hope it works. You could put photos of your family in the rocket windows. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/Beiji/rocket.jpg

I also made these hanging signs to put in the car and the resort window. I am having a great time! Having something like this to do with my time helps me cut down on obsessive park commando planning! ;) Ah, it's the new relaxed me! http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/Beiji/disers_on_board.jpg

I tried the tied dye this weekend, and it worked!!!!

The Mickey in front looks better than the Mickey on the back, but it's a practice t-shirt. I used the kit from Wal-Mart and was very satisfied with it, just be sure to buy extra rubber bands. I used the vibrant color kit, and used the red and blue dye on a white ringer t made by hanes that is 100% cotton. I am very satisfied with the shirts and very satisfied with the kit. I let the dye sit in the shirt for 6 hours and like the bright shades of the colors.

My advice is don't be afraid to try it. It is very easy with a kit.

I made tie-dyed shirts for DS and myself this weekend, I did mine in just red & blue and I love the way it turned out, I did DS's in red/yellow/blue, but I picked up a shirt that was not 100% cotton by mistake and the colors came out too pastel. The red looks pink and he won't wear it now. I have to make another one for him. I put the pastel one on Ebay today, my Ebay name is the same as my name here.
