I tried the tied dye this weekend, and it worked!!!!
The Mickey in front looks better than the Mickey on the back, but it's a practice t-shirt. I used the kit from Wal-Mart and was very satisfied with it, just be sure to buy extra rubber bands. I used the vibrant color kit, and used the red and blue dye on a white ringer t made by hanes that is 100% cotton. I am very satisfied with the shirts and very satisfied with the kit. I let the dye sit in the shirt for 6 hours and like the bright shades of the colors.
My advice is don't be afraid to try it. It is very easy with a kit.
Thanks so much for your post! I've been going back & forth on whether to try that kit from WM. The vibrant color one is the one I want to use, too...so, now that I know it works, I'll get it.
Can you explain exactly how you dyed the Mickey head? I have sort of a vague idea of how it's done but I sure would appreciate step-by-step directions. If you have any other tips, I'd love to know those, also...thanks, again!

We just made Tye Dye Mickey T-shirts last weekend to wear on the 4th of July (not at WDW but here in Nebraska). We'll wear them on our trip next year.
We made 2 kids T-shirts (cotton toddler shirts), 3 adult T-shirts (cotton), & 2 tank tops (cotton & spandex). We used Jacguard Tye Dye Funky Groovy Kit that came with Red, Blue, & Yellow squeeze bottles of dye. They all turned out great, some better than others. It took 2 days.
We sewed the gathering stitch (basting stitch )to form the Mickey heads and pulled it tight which made a pouch. Then accordian folded the shirt and used rubber bands to hold it together. Then squeezed dye, let sit 24 hrs, and ta da!!!!
We read about it on here so thanks for the How To everyone
Here's a picture of my tank top.

Step By Step Mickey
1. Find a Mickey Icon on the computer that you can blow up to the size of a page
2. Cut out Mickey Icon
3. Use a washable Marker and trace Mickey Icon on shirt
4. Use big basting stitches and sew around Mickey Icon
5. Pull the end of the thread into a pouch making sure all of pouch is on outside of shirt
6. Get DH to hold gathered strings tightly while you rubberband the threaded area of pouch
7. Use the instructions on packet to finish project

Someone on the DCL Door Magnet thread posted this: For those of us that are beginners in the Printing business I found a PRINTSHOP 20 ESSENTIALS for 19.99 with a $20 rebate. (So all you are paying for is the cost of shipping. ) I found it at Outpost(dot)com. This looks like a really good deal.

A few years ago, eleven friends and I went to WDW for our annual Ladies Only Trip. We had 2 sets of T-shirts that we wore and we caused quite a stir! I can only find one picture on my hard drive or in any online albums that I have saved, and this is not the better set of shirts. We had white shirts with black letters that were terrific too. Not hard to make, and very effective. Anyone want to guess what they spelled???? :earboy2:

We had M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E-! Everywhere we went, guests and CMS would say thing like, "Hey! We just saw M and C over by Dumbo!" It was a wonderful trip even though it was 2 weeks after 9/11 and we had a bit of rain.
I have a photo shot taken by a CM on Main Street of all of us, if I can put my fingers on it and scan it I will post it.

I am so inspired now! We're going in August for my dd's 11th birthday- I'll have to get rockin to decide what to do. I like the tie-dye, but would like the shirt to say something about her birthday as well.
Do you know if you can iron on a transfer after the shirt has been tie dyed?
Thanks! :wave2:

I think that would work. You could try printing your design on paper to check the image quality before you print it on a transfer.

Okay...my shirt idea isn't a Mickey tie-dye but we all think it's cool. No pix yet, though.
Everyone gets to tie-dye their shirts with sunny orange, royal blue and LIME GREEN! There will be iron-on transfers of Ohio with our town mapped, Florida with Orlando mapped and two arrows going between them. On the back it will say: "We spent a bunch of money on this Disney trip and spent 6 hours flying so we could see Mickey and all we got were these tee shirts!!"

You know, I wouldn't mind helping out a few people with some transfer designs. How about this: first three people to pm me with their design idea that they want illustrated I'll create for them on a first-come, first-served basis? Should be fun :)
Be sure to inlcude what text you want, what colors you want, style ideas, what color background, etc.

Absloutly - just a little harder to coordinate clip art and such. I made a couple a while back that said "Love is being a Grandma" and palce photos of the three grandkids on it (for my AUnt) and just used word. When you print it - there is a button someone (the transfer directions will tell you where) - that says invert or something - so that the text comes out backwards so that when you iron it - it comes out right.
WHat program you use won't effect it as much as your printer - have a test shirt ready - to practice on - so that your printer prints neatly (my old one was horrible quality) - and then practice with the iron once :) Good luck and have fun.

I always right click on the clipart and click Save Picture As. You need to pick a place where to put the file (My Pictures, My Documents, etc.). Do you have printshop software downloaded on your computer? You should be able to import images to the program. If you post what program you have maybe someone here has the same one and can help you figure it out.
As for fonts, you have to download those from a website. It's hit or miss with me when I try to do it. Somehow I did get Walt Disney's font downloaded, but I don't have a clue how I did it. I'm clueless when it comes to zip files.

When we went in May, I made shirts for DH, DD, DS and myself. I made everyone a set of shirts...one for each park. I found some great clip art on magicalears web site. I used the theme park logos (ie. castle pic that says Magic Kingdom under it, tree of life w/animals for AK, etc.) on the back of each shirt and on the front, put a character of the kids' choosing and their name. Back said Last Name Disney Adventure 2005. I added some characters to the back of the EPCOT shirt since it didn't have any (Mickey and the other originals) and to the MGM shirt I added some pics of Mickey through the years. I also made each of the kids a villain shirt with about a dozen pics in collage format. It made getting dressed each day easier and we could find eachother more easily too with the same shirts on! They have been wearing their shirts often since the trip which means at least a dozen washes/shirt and the iron ons are starting to show some wear.

OK, and after you download the font and unzipped, how do you use it? I mean with any program?
Thanks
MidNite
07-13-2005, 04:35 AM
Go to your Fonts folder (either by going to Control Panel/Fonts or by going to C:\Windows\Fonts) and then using File then Install New Font..
Navigate to where you unzipped the font. Then select the font(s) [you can use Select All] and click OK.
Alternately, you can move the font directly into the Fonts folder by copying and pasting. I find I have problems sometimes with it installing correctly sometimes, however. So normally I do the "install font".
Then use whatever program you want to make your design in and select the font from your options.

I'm still confused about flipping the picture so that the words don't appear backwards when you transfer the image. I have an image saved -wish I could figure out how to post it here  , anywho... it's a baseball playing Mickey with " Dangerboy's Mom " written underneath the image. How do I flip the image so the words don't come out backwards?

I so love this thread............and so wish I had an ounce of creativeness in my body. :wizard:
I do have a question (or proposition, maybe?)............I would love to get my DN a shirt made with something about his first WDW trip (he calls it Mickey's House and is so very excited about going :earsboy: ). I know that a previous post said someone from eBay made theirs. I did a quick eBay search but could not find anything. Does anyone have contact for an eBay seller who would do shirts made to order? Or........would any of you talented DIS'ers be interested in making a couple shirts for my DN (I'll pay for expenses, labor, etc.)? Anyone interested or with further info can PM me.

I found the link for the Incredibles Iron On's (http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/incredibles/) You've got to go to the "activities" section to find Iron On's. You can also print a mask.
On the "secret site" you can print out bumper stickers "Incredible Mom (Dad)...on board" They have one "Incredible Baby on Board". That would be cute for a preg Mom's T! :rotfl2:
Maybe I'll do that for our party of 6!
I was thinking of making my DD a T to wear to CRT. I've got a photo of her in her Cinderella dress with Cinderella from last year. Any suggestions for what text to use?

Here's a good way to find clipart for your projects. I use google image search and look for "disney clipart" in the "large" option. The larger the picture the better. Just remember, you can always scale down, but you can't scale up.
Google "disney clipart" large only (http://images.google.com/images?q=disney+clipart&start=20&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&newwindow=1&c2coff=1&sa=N&imgsz=xxlarge)
Also, try using other keywords like "cinderella" or "mickey mouse" in the large format.

My question is where do you find the backgrounds.
I can find the clip-art & the fonts.
Figured out how to save & enlarge.
When I put it all together.
I end up with clip-art & the wording on a blank white back ground.
So boring.
Also how do you combine more than 1 clip-art on 1 picture.
Without having to print cut paste.
I'm confused.
I'm very happy with the art work that MidNite did for me.
As I'm a Disney nut.
I would love to be able to do this myself for all the furture trips.
Have many planned.

Midnite: Do you know: is the current release of Photoshop version CS2? They have a 30 day free trial on it. I was thinking about doing the free trial and then trying to find an earlier version of Photoshop on ebay. I have used clip art in the past for shirts and autograph books, but am looking to be able to do more with the backgrounds. I have been using Print Shop Deluxe most of the time. It's ok, but the editing is difficult.
My current thought for a t-shirt is to have a "menu" look to it. Theme: Food, Fun, and Family. Under the Food heading - list our ADRs, under the Fun - list our favorite ride, and of course under family - list our names. I haven't yet found a good menu template to go by. Oh well, just a thought.
Any help you can send my way on either the t-shirt or the software would be greatly appreciated.

I am making the mickey tie dye shirts as part of my new business. I plan to ebay them. If anyone has a special request as far as sizes/colors go, PM me and let me know. I plan to dye this weekend - and again in a couple weeks.
I think I'm also going to do some of them in Halloween colors and some, eventually, in Christmas colors.
But, if you want an order for your whole family and need specific sizes, now is the time to get the info in so I can order the shirts from my supplier.

In Photoshop, make a new layer. Create a rectangle in whatever color you want the menu to be. Then use Transform/Skew to make one side of the menu. Duplicate your layer, flip horizontally and then align it in the center to put the two halves of the menu together.
After you've done your text, skew it to look like it's written on the menu also.
That's what I'd do, anyway :)

Well, after hours and hours of fiddling with spyware and viruses on my mom's computer (while she slept) I wasn't able to get my "real" work in. So, I had time to do another shirt design. :teeth:

Go to your Fonts folder (either by going to Control Panel/Fonts or by going to C:\Windows\Fonts) and then using File then Install New Font..
Navigate to where you unzipped the font. Then select the font(s) [you can use Select All] and click OK.
Alternately, you can move the font directly into the Fonts folder by copying and pasting. I find I have problems sometimes with it installing correctly sometimes, however. So normally I do the "install font".
Then use whatever program you want to make your design in and select the font from your options.
THANKS!

MidNite - I would like to use one of your creations, but of course, I need to change the names. I have photoshop elements 2: is there an easy way for you to explain how to change a name?? When I looked the picture up in PSE 2, the entire picture was viewed as a background, there were no layers. I'm just learning about this stuff and I have a major headache!!!!!!!! Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not super familiar with Elements so I don't know what exactly it's capable of.
And the problem with sending PSD files is they're so large even zipped :(
I think the reason you're just seeing names is that the files you've got available to you are JPG's. They are flat files, not editable. I guess PSE uses PSD files like regular PS?
Not sure...

Midnite: Love you designs. I have another question for you. I downloaded a free 30 day trial of the latest Photoshop - Did you go to school to learn how to use it like you do? I've been playing around for a few days and am getting my "menu" design going, but it's hard to figure it out. I have experience with AutoCad and Printshop and some other "basic" stuff, but I find Photoshop a little hard to learn. I enjoy just playing around on it, but I was wondering what your educational background is. If this is something that I'll NEVER learn, I'll just skip it, but it it's something that can be learned, I'll keep at it. I don't mind, it's fun, but I still don't have the look I want and I don't want to "waste" my time trying to learn something that "everyone" has to take a class to learn. Hmmmm - did that make any sense?
Another question for you, too. On the "back to school" design that you did, did you make the background yourself? Also, did you do the "printing" with anything in particular - I love the chalkboard look it has.
My other idea is to use your chalkboard and put a "wood" border around it. Have the words "back to school" written on it and Mickey crossing off "school" and printing "Walt Disney World". See, we're going in Sept (normal back to school time) and I think it would be cute. I could add some "info" around the main print with our names and such.
Ok, sorry this post is long, but if you could give me some advice, I'd appreciate it. I'm really wondering about the photoshop "thing".

For those of us who are not as incredibly talented as Midnite, and can't afford to buy the fancy computer software, I found the following, which has helped me a lot in playing around with a design - it's Hanes T-shirt software, and it has a free "lite" version at their website: www.hanes2u.com. I downloaded the free software to start playing around with, but ordered the full version (my trip is not until December, so I have a lot of time to play around).
I also found a site where you can get the t-shirts at great prices. It's www.cheapestees.com.
Have fun. I am.

Ok, sorry this post is long, but if you could give me some advice, I'd appreciate it. I'm really wondering about the photoshop "thing".
All the programs I use have been self-taught. Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Swish, Swift, etc. I am sure you can learn too! I learned by following online tutorials, by playing with the programs, and by reading books on the subjects. Also, the help files on the programs are very useful.
The way I made the chalky looks was I made a dark background shape, then on another layer I used several different brushes in white(they were called Grunge Brushes (http://www.photoshopbrushes.com/brushes/6.htm) , I believe) to make the streaks. That's all! You could find a frame photo somewhere and put it around the rectangle for a chalkboard.

thanks to all of you for your inspiration, this is our 5th trip and the first time I even considered doing this! Thankfully dh is very cooperative about these things, as long as I don't put him in pink we are good to go! I plan to do two tie-dyes and 2 prints for each of us!

Okay Midnite, I have a rather bizarre request. I have a close friend who would love to go to WDW, but can't afford to right now. I'm hoping to surprise her in '07 with a trip, but I digress ..... for now she will have to be content with a composite facsimile I made with my friend's face and Lindsay Lohan's body ( I told you it was bizarre :) ) I've laminated the " Flat Cindy " and will be taking her with me to the parks next week. I'd love a t shirt design I can give my friend Cindy - the real one, not the flat one :) Any ideas would be appreciated :)

MidNite.. I've never made a shirt before. That PSE 2.0 was tricky at first. Once I figured out how to resize things it wasn't hard at all. My computer is so slow (windows ME). That magic eraser tool was nifty. Most of my images had white or colored backgrounds. That magic eraser tool helped so much. I didn't have a manual for 2.0. I just goofed around with it.
Thanks for the tips!! :)

Hi Harriett....I downloaded a trial of PS Elements and was able to figure out enough to change over a design you had done. I put it in my sig. Is it ok to use this? Would the original family mind? Thanks to you I have a new hobby....well at least for the 30 day free trial

Looks great! I am thinking of just creating some templates in Word so people can edit them as they please. What do you think?

MidNite - I would love it if you would put something in Word so that we can "play" with them without bothering you. I've been dying to do the October one to reflect my family's trip Oct 15, but didn't want to bother you with the details. So for all those other people out there who aren't as gifted as some posters - would you PLEASE put something in word! We'd all be grateful.

Hi MidNite... I'm hesitant to even ask but I have tried on my own and failed miserably. It's a long way off but DH and I are going to spend our 2oth anniversary at WDW in August of 06. I am messing with a picture of Lady and the Tramp at Tony's (with the spaghetti) and trying to say something like (but it doesn't have to be exact) "and they called it puppy love" and something like "now it's been 20 years" or some such thing. If you get really bored (HA HA!!!) and need another project...
Thanks for considering it anyway!!!

I'm sorry guys. I couldn't work today. Feeling a bit under the weather. I haven't been able to sit at my work computer. The best I can do right now is lie in bed and use my laptop.
Tomorrow I have a meeting and some work to tidy up so it might be Wednesday or Thursday before I can do any more.
Don't worry. I've not forgotten about the designs. I actually have a couple I'm itching to get out but I just haven't felt up to it today.

Oooh, love the colorful tie-dye one--how did you get the black inside the mickey and then red on the margin of it? It looks really cool! I would love to attempt this. Can you give me some hints on how you did it? Thanks! :flower:

Ok, here's what I have for my first t-shirt design. I've never posted a picture before, so hopefully this works....
It's a little hard to see, but the menu has our favorite rides listed under "fun", our ADR's listed under "food", and our names under "family". I think I may need to clean it up a little, the center of the menu doesn't match exactly - I'm just learning Photoshop :)
I'll have to see how it looks on an 8 1/2 x 11. Well, it's my first one....

I typed "0" in a seperate text box than the "2005" and then just moved it over top of the year to make the "ears". I think I scaled the zero up a little, too. Just play with it until you think it looks good.
Also, thank you all for you kind comments. I think if I didn't hear anything, I wouldn't have been brave enough to follow through with putting the design on shirts. Thank you so much.

Here's a coupon code for cheapestees.com. It's saves 10% off your order, not a big savings, but helps with the shipping and handling a little. I found their shipping and handeling expensive.

...and I thought just buying everyone matching t-shirts was good!! :teeth:
:sunny:
LOL, and as expensive as it might seem I usually have shirts made for us by a professional. I had some caricatures done last year of all of us and had them add the Epcot ball...etc in the background. I had those put on shirts at Zazzle.com. Then I had a friend airbrush individual characters on each shirt (for Universal trip) and our names on the back. This year I did the same, before too much longer I'll just have to buy the kids new shirts, me and hubby will have a set to hold us for the whole trip LOL This year I am doing a Tye Dye though, just got the dye and now I'm waiting on my shirt order....should be fun.
I'll try and get pictures of all our designs up....even though they weren't homemade :)

Really? Every other shirt site I went to charged 12.00+ for shipping 4 shirts. I jumped on Cheapestees.com since their shipping was only 5.95 for those same 4 shirts. It's not cheap shipping, but it's ground shipping. Heck even the postal service charges 3.95 and up for Priority rate and I'm sure these shirts would be over that weight and would bump up to the 4-5.00 range just for regular postal shipping and no tracking.
I'm just glad I found somewhere that wasn't charging 12.00 to ship me 4 shirts....now to dig out some of hubbies white tees to practice on LOL

I ordered six tank tops, size 4-6, and the shipping and handling was $7.95, so it really brought the t-shirts back to $5 a piece. I ordered white.

Just so you know, Wal-Mart carries fruit of the loom and hanes tees (really heavy-weight jersey) for $3.84 a piece in adult sizes and $3 a piece in children's sizes. Can't beat it when you factor in the cost of shipping.
As for getting the darker color in the center of the mickey, I just had to saturate it really well at the tips and I added some blue to make it more purpley.
I'm going to do another batch today - I am getting really excited now that I know that this method works :)
I also want to try some purple and orange for Halloween. :)
