Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in the 2006 and/or 2007 Disney Half or Full marathons. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us!

Welcome to monte! What kind of training are you doing? We can hookup a room rate discount for the group, but we need at least ten rooms to be a group and someone in the group who's willing to be responsible for the contract.
How many need rooms now?

Welcome to scanmom! Gotta love a Dolphins fan! What type of training are you doing now?

Glad you both decided to join us!

There are 92 names on the list now. I'm updating the spreadsheet and realized I haven't been keeping track of who's going Goofy. So if you want to let me know, I'll update the list. I'm just excited that some of you fullers are gonna be there with us halfers :goodvibes

Liz...wtg on the 4-mile walk! Sounds like a busy day for you!

Lynne...glad to hear the finals are over. So do you move out of your apartment for the summer or just bite the bullet and pay the rent increase?

Alice...how'd you hurt your back? Everyone needs a Garmin ;)

Lily...have a great vacation! We'll look forward to a trip report when you get back.

Melanie...how are your feet doing? What are you feeding your virtual partner? ;)

Carrie...you haven't had a bathroom for 4 months? :earseek: Congrats on the 8 min run...especially in the rain

Zoe...so far, my cross-training consists of looking at my YMCA membership card and thinking, "I really need to start cross-training" ;)

Susan...where did you row to? ;) Your trainer does some neat stuff! Lots of variety to keep it interesting.

Erin...glad to hear you're feeling better and eating better. What are your plans for the summer? Did you get your financial aid stuff worked out?

Lisa...never heard of your sacral gadget, but love the fashion colors! Has your PT taken a look at it yet?

Helen...where ya been?

Darcey...how's your training going?

Kristy...I know...y'all probably think I'm a complete hick with the whole barefoot thing ;) There's a saying in my family that we know it's Christmas when my uncle's wearing shoes and a shirt :p So I probably shouldn't mention that when I met DH, I had no front teeth?

Not much new for me. I'm doing a 5K in Bradenton next month, hoping for a sub 50 minute finish. Still having problems with bad leg cramps since the 5K two weeks ago. Not sure what I did, but if it doesn't get better soon, I may have to join Carrie in the ice baths. :cold:

Good training everyone!

Hello All

No, I haven't disappeared again, I was in London last week doing some executive education. I managed to pick up some type of viral infection while there, as the last 36 hours, including the flight back, have been pretty rough.

Carrie and Helen - Congratulations for your results. That's good work there, a signal of coming success in January. My philosophy is that I'll always be stronger and fresher on race day, since I'll be tapered, fresh, and all revved up. This rationalization works about 9 times out of 10.

With so many of you getting into the 3, 4, 5 type distances, one trick I use when training is for every day to have a purpose. Some days that purpose is an easy workout, so distance and pace does not matter at all. When I'm working for distance, I like break it up as a segment of the race. For example, 3.28 doesn't sound like much, but it is 1/4 of a half. Right now I'm running 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 of the half. Later as the race approaches, some training runs will be 2/3 and 3/4 of the half. Then as I stretch it out even more I run 10, 11, or 12, and call it a half less 3 or 2 or 1. I concentrate on the distance and my effort that day, and think about how much further I could go than today's effort. Some days the purpose is tempo, so I'll do some distance at race pace (you could call them intervals, I call them tempo work). This trains my body and my mind to get adjusted to running at race pace and running relaxed. This is the tough part, pace and relaxed, but a few sessions at race pace will help you learn how fast you are running, and to relax while holding this pace. For those of us without a Garmin, knowing how fast you are going is important in a long race. The worst thing in the world is to go out too fast and blow up all over the course.

My one effort last week was a loop of the Thames. I started by the British Air Eye on the southbank, ran down river to Tower Bridge, over the bridge, around the Tower, back up river, and after 60 minutes I stopped at Westminister. The path was almost all stone, marble, with some stretches of cobblestone, so after an hour pretty much every part of my body below the waist hurt. Lots if ice after, still feeling it in my ankles, but a pretty darn cool route.

If I do go Goofy, my plan would be to train for the half like I am, and run the half on Saturday hard. Then I either would, or would not, run the full based on how I felt Saturday evening and Sunday morning early. If I simply cannot get out of bed Sunday, that would be that. But if I could, then the full would be 100% for fun, just to enjoy the course and the comraderie, and those triple medals to add to my Donalds hanging in my office.

Have a great week all.

Craig

Calcio that sounds like a good plan---so you wouldn't really train for the full then--aside from maybe some slightly longer long distances days.

Either today or tomorrow I'll get back walkin'. I tell you--2 weeks off have been kind of nice and I've turned L-A-Z-Y! Oh well.

3 medals sound LOVELY!

Morning! Where is the time going? Wow! I can't believe my next long walk will be a five miler!!!! Training went well for me this week for the most part...only missed one day! Getting closer to that Garmin!!

No time to properly check in with everybody....another busy day today....then off to babysit one of Greg's nieces. I am hoping maybe we can go for a nice little bike ride.....that would take care of my cross training....which BTW seems to be going an awful lot like Mel's......but I just *think* about the card, don't actaully even look at it!

Happy traing one and all!! Make it a good week!!!

Hi all. Welcome to all the new people! We're getting a big group, now!

Yesterday I did my 10 mile run in prep for my June 1/2 in a time of (wait for it): 1:59:57!!!! Sub 2 hours!!! I'm so proud of myself. Yes, it's only 3 seconds below 2 hours, but below is below, as far as I'm concerned. :cool1: :cool1:

Spent the rest of yesterday trekking through RV lot after RV lot. We're looking at getting a motorhome as we love to travel and we now have a dog who can't do kennels (shelter dog w/severe anxiety issues) and my mom, who usually cares for her, is getting older now and not quite as able. So if any of you own motorhomes, I'd love to hear any advice. I think we're looking primarily as a class "C" or a small class "A". All advice appreciated. I've noticed they all looka like after a day of going from lot to lot.

Have a good week everybody and keep up the good work!!!

disneefun, WAY TO GO!!!!!! Congratulations on your awesome run!

I did 12 yesterday in 2:04, and I have to say it almost killed me. I wasn't planning on running as we were supposed to go to the beach but bad weather deterred our plans. Not thinking I was gonna run, I did an athletic conditioning class Friday morning and gave it my all. Well about mile 6 into my run yesterday my hamstrings curled into knots. Sheer pride got me to the end. I didn't want my running partner to think I was wimping out on her.
I came home and just laid horizontal for 3 hours.....ugh! what a run.

Mel-I am going goofy..didn't know if you had me down but am planning on signing up soon.

I have an idea for those of us that are planning to run the half. Why don't we try to wear the same color so we can recognize each other???
I do not suggest purple though. The TNT people wear that color. I made the mistake of wearing a purple tank in January and my poor DH couldn't spot me at all. That may be a silly idea to some, but it would be nice to recognize some friendly faces, especially along those access roads, they are the boring part of the race.

3 miles in 45 minutes today. I hope I can add a mile each week, if I can do that then I can join Liz for the Chicago half.

You people amaze me, your pain tolerance and stamina. I'm in awe.

Thanks for the motivation, WISHer's. :wizard: I've had a so-so running week. I keep telling myself I'll run later. Came here, read the great successes of everyone, got off my behind and ran!!! :Pinkbounc You guys are great!!!

Good job disneefun and zoegirl. Those times are awesome!!!

Craig, I like the way you break down the days. Less intimidating, which can be my downfall. Remind me again in the fall!!!

Lisa, hope you are feeling better! I started PT this week. Hate to admit it, because I'm not injured. I least that's what I'm telling myself. ;) Starting with IT band strengthening. Hip pain is there, but not too bad. We'll see.

Liz, good luck with your five miler!!! You can do it! :flower:

Chimera, good luck with your upcoming 5K. I hate ice baths, but they do help me, too. Hope your legs feel better, soon.

That's me---my cute TNT top--I'll be sporting it again.

I can suggest--something crazy for the hair--lots of people don mouse ears or something. My coach and purple sparkly fuzzy balls on a headband that made her look like an alien LOL.

Avoid red--that is the Stroke team color as well.

Lime green running shorts (LOL!!!!).....ribbons pinned to the shirt. Have your "fans" do their posters on lime green poster board---it will help you to find each other on the path :).

SARA---I'm not injured either ;) ;) ;) :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 . I did not admit anything until the car accident--b/c when it hurts---it HURTS! However....some inner thigh strengthening seems to be helping. I go for a follow up MRI on Tuesday--and I think I'm ready to close this part of the case and revert back to my medical insurance. I'm afraid to call them and ask--so I will ask my doctor who only sees patients from my husband's company with the same medical insurance--and see how that all works out. I think I will accept that I will have some aches forever---kind of like old person aches--nothing that really hurts...just gotta keep it moving. The option is completely sedentary or not--anything that is NOT all affects me the same way--super weird! Walk like a snail or run a marathon--same result! Anyway, I'm on the mend!

I am new to these threads, as I have just decided to do the half. I started training seriously this week, but had to work and be "on call" this weekend at the hospital I work at, so no time running for me since Thursday. Plus, I have been SOOOO sick, all weekend, but still had to work. It has been all I could do to get to work and do my callbacks, even without any workouts! I think I am getting a little better though, so I hope I feel well enough tomarrow (Monday) to get back out there with a 3-4 miler. I printed off the 12 week training program that I found on one of the links above, so that should be quite helpful. Thanks! :flower:

Wow, I better call down and get something reserved. I kind of wanted to see how I do for Chicago before I commit to WDW but if they are booked this far in advance I guess putting it off until August wouldn't be a good idea. Thanks for the info.

I'm sure it's not that way for all the resorts....I'm surprised...but have a strong feeling that Team in Training might have something to do with the Coronado being booked. They require upwards of about 1000 rooms (I think its something like that).

ETA: Remember--only one night's deposit is required--and it is refundable should you decide not to enter :).

Welcome Monte and scanmom!

Craig - Glad you're back. Your advice is always so sound! WHy don't you just walk the full? A Mickey and Goofey would look so good with your Donalds! And, what do you mean you still haven't gotten the Garmin yet?!

Mel - The cold helps. I did really well Saturday with about 45 minutes above the ankle in Lake MI! :cold: Silly me. I didn't thhink the 6 & 8 yo's would go in teh water. They "waded" and ended up over teh waist when waves hit. I'm a bad aunt. But Grandma was watching too and they were having sooo much fun!!!

Liz - Way to go! You're getting closer!

Lynne - Boy, you are anal! Just kidding. Yes, I woudl like to know that my doctor didn't just barely get through med school. However, I've always just looked at the diploma and never really asked about grades. Let alone 1st year pathology.

disneefun - Great time! Have you looked into 5th wheels. A co-worker isn't using his motor home too much right now due to gas prices. My parents love their fifth wheel. They pull with a diesel F250, so the prices ar ea little better. Plus, they can unhook easily and not have to pull the trailer around when sight seeing. Much easier to drive and better on fuel. Just a thought.

zoegirl - You are such the big dog!!! Thanks for all of your encouragement! It's really great to have you aboard!

Someone brought up shirts. Zoe? I think. We were planning on getting lime green cool max shirts. I think we planned on ordering in the fall.

I did 4 on Sat in 46 minutes. Not bad. I took a new route and it was really hilly. I think I'm not going to worry about what pace I should be at until I get to the real training and am running, hopefully, 100% of the time. I think it will be good then to do some runs at marathon pace to get in the groove. I also think that's where my virtual partner will help. However, I don't really think I'll use it until I'm running all of the time.

Yikes is this thread growing quickly! How great is that?!

1. Bumping to get this back above last week's thread.
2. Forgot to address the 4 months w/o a bathroom comment. No, we were only 4 days w/o a full bath. That was bad enough. However, for a couple weeks, I was taking a bath in the great wide open, as the bathroom had no interior walls. It took about 3 weeks before we could shower and not just take a bath (see great wide open comment). A couple weeks with having to get ready in there otehr bathroom, as ther was no toilet or no mirror & vanity upstairs. (Anything that makes my mornings more difficult is bad.) The toilet has been removed and put back a couple times, which means a long cold trip downstairs in the middle of the night. The radiant floor heat got a little too hot at times, because there was no tile on top of it (I could live with that, as I love that feature most of the time). We live in an old house. The only real closet was in the bathrrom, which had been remodeled in the 40's (?). So, my clothes are on a rod in the guest bedroom and my linens and bathroom supplies are in various tubs and boxese in the guest bedroom. FYI -My 8 yo niece chided me for having such a mess in the guest bedroom this weekend. Technically, it was all put away, just crowded. My mom stuck up for me (there's a change from childhood!) So, that's the scoop. This may also help you to understand my dread of using my wonderful new tub with cold water!

Hi All!

Just got back from 4 miles in 42 minutes. (Love my Garmin!) I've only been running/ walking for about 3 weeks, so I'm not in such bad shape. Had a Girl Scout trip to Hershey Park on Saturday. DD and I were coaster queens and I discovered I am too old to go non-stop for 19 hours. Good practice for Disney in July though.

I'm following one of those beginning running plans and transitioning into a half-marathon plan to prepare for my Philadelphia Distance Run in Sept. THat will be my performance barometer for the WDW Half in January.

Hey ya'll!
Did a boot camp class tonight, although I call it "booty camp" b/c that's what hurts the next day :rotfl:
Lemme give you guys some sound advice.....do not and I repeat do not eat fried pickles and a corn dog for lunch on a day you have a hard work out or run planned.....ugh! Mind over matter and lots of deep breaths kept me from expelling my lunch all over the Y parking lot today. Won't be making that mistake again.

Now for those of you about to go for the cookie jar or the bag of chips, you can thank me for grossing you out enough to not eat the rest of the night.

Take heed my friends...fried foods are the enemy! The enemy I say!!!!

Zoegirl--too late on that grossness....I had a serious mega-dose OD on my kids today--and since I'm not back to full running....that was the next best thing to calm my PMSing behind down. I may have a bigger butt tomorrow--but I might have reduced my children's need for therapy as an adult by at least half ;).

Where were you at 2pm with this insight? ;)

I'm back - sorry, work got in the way there. And what week I missed, Liz has over doubled her mileage (yipppppeeeeeeeeee), we have lots of new members and Craig has been back to my old home town, jogged past my old office AND mastered the London marathon swear cobbles near Tower Bridge (so named as they're about mile 17 on the route and none of my friends ever got round them without swearing).

I in the meantime have been typing like a mad woman! I did get one more race in, another 10km (well supposedly) and well and truly broke my 'I don't run in the rain' rule. It started off fine, then it threw it down - I'd been hopeless all week so hadn't washed any gym tops so ended up wearing my lovely white Disney Marathon 2003 top for the first time, which ended up transparent and at one point ended up running without my glasses so I could see better - as I am near legally blind without my glasses this wasn't good. All these means that I know that this was not a 10km course as I finished in 57.58 and there was no way I ran fast enough for that.

Anyway, work is still a nightmare, so I'd better get back to it, Helen

oh and a note to Zoe to say thanks for the purple top tip, my newest sleeveless top is purple so that probably would have been first choice. Don't know what I'm going to do now, the race I've got in October gives away tops with sleeves and I can't do the one two weeks later that does give out sleeveless ones as it messes with training. Oh the dilemma!!!

Hey guys! I just can't get my consistency down. It always seems like something comes up! Right now, I am supposed to run on Mon, Thurs, and Sat. I missed today because of DS's baseball game and my sister's birthday dinner. I missed on Thursday to go see Star Wars with dh and the boys. And Saturday I missed because dd had her dance recital. We had rehearsal in the morning and the recital in the evening, and in between it was too hot to run.

All that leads to my new big problem, I don't know what to do about the heat this summer. On Saturday, we hit 103 and it is only May! I guess I am going to have to get up early to run, but I am NOT a morning person, so that will be a bit challenging. Plus, it never really cools down good. I still can't believe how hot it was here this weekend!

No time to respond to everyone tonight. It's been crazy lately. I hope everyone is doing much better than me!

As long as we're confessing...

I missed my first workout since Jan today. Too much to do for work today, so didn't get around to it. Of course, starting Thurs, I'll be missing all or most of them for about a week. I've been thinking about taking the Garmin to WDW, but would I really continue training when there's carrot cake cookies and Kitchen Sinks to eat? I'm going to try to get in at least 6 or 7 miles the next two days so I don't have as far to fall.

zoe...fried pickles do sound nasty, but I like a corn dog on occasion :goodvibes I think the grossest fried food I've ever heard of is deep-fried Mars, Snickers and Milky Way bars...why would someone do that to a poor, defenseless Milky Way? :confused3

Darcey...now Hershey Park sounds like my kinda place! I always imagine it like the chocolate factory in Willie Wonka (the original).

Lisa...I'm liking the idea of crazy hair things. I'll see what I can find this weekend.

Carrie...old houses are cool! I don't have the patience for remodeling though. You must be a saint. Hey...tell Zoe and the other new kids the fabulous saying you came up with for our Tshirt! Yep we're growing...I have 92 names on the list...and that's not counting everyone's running partners.

scanmom...what kinda hospital work do you do?

Lynne...anal's good in medicine. I guess someone's gotta graduate last in their class...glad it wasn't you or me ;)

sara...welcome back! :wave2:

Alysa...welcome back to you too :wave2: How's your DD2? Mine's the best climber in preschool

Alice...great time on your 3 miles!

Helen...was wondering what happened to you. New book in the works?

Kristy...how was Star Wars?

I know I had something brilliant or clever to close with but it's past my bedtime. Work has left me brain dead.

Good training everyone!

Nothing big but did my 3 miles on Monday in 44 instead of 45 and felt really good afterwards :) did I mention I'm not good a pushing myself, I'm going to try to push myself a bit more on Wed. (or not). I have Pilates reformer tonight and I'm kind of bummed that I won't be trying to beat my record ;).

Well, I pushed my Monday run to today. A little advice for all of you. If someone asks "Would you like a shot?", the sane person says no. My tetnus was up over a year ago and I'd been meaning to get one. So I was happy when they offered. I guess that's why they're good for 10 years. So you forget how much it hurts by the time you're due again. For all of you medical people, no I don't need the real reasons. Just sympathy. Did I mention my arm hurts? (Please use proper whiny voice when reading.)

Mel - My house is old, but the only real character is on the outside. I'm not a saint. I'm just not a great house keeper and having things torn apart doesn't bother me that much. You get immune at some point, as long as you have the basics (toilet, shower, water in the kitchen sink). Where are you staying at WDW? Can you get up early and run around the grounds? Then you won't feel so guilty eating that kitchen sink.

Helen - Maybe it wasn't raining that hard. AMybe you really were just running that fast! Good to hear from you!

Kristy - I still don't know how you do it. That heat thing. No thanks. I get nauseous much hotter than 85. I wouldn't want to do mornings either.

Zoe - Sorry about the fried pickles. Pizza's npt sp great right before you run either.

Darcy - 4 miles in 42 minutes after only 3 weeks?! I'll say you're not doing bad. Way to go!

Alice - Way to go on the time! It's so nice to see improvement. Just don't push it too hard too early.

Do you have room for one more?? :cheer2: I just decided last night that I'm going to attempt the half-marathon. My DH is doing the full marathon and he got me thinking that I can do the half. It would be a major accomplishment for me, when I finish (when, not if  ). I'm pretty physically fit and I walk a couple of miles on the treadmill and sometimes I do pilates, but I've never ran/jogged/walked any long distance before, so this is going to be a new experience for me. Having my DH (Stephen) who runs is going to be a big help to me and it sounds like this group is going to be too--I'm going to need a lot of encouragement!! I haven't started any type of serious of training yet, I think I'm going to get on the treadmill tonight and see just how fast a 4-minute mile is!! I'll let you know tomorrow if I changed my mind about the half marathon!

Edit--I meant a 14-minute mile, not a 4!! My typing skills and blonde roots are showing

Krista - ALways room for one more!!! Welcome! You are not seriously oging to try a 4 minute mile, are you??? You only have ot do 16 minute miles to avoid the sweeper, although, it's recommende that you shoot for a 15 just in case you get caught in crowds or have a slow start. Let us know how your training goes. Be sure to check out the marathon FAQ near the top opf the WISH board.

Welcome Krista! You can definitely do the 1/2 marathon. I had a similar story. My DH had always wanted to run the Disney marathon. He finally signed up last February. In May, I decided to join him and walk the 1/2. With the encouragement of DH and the WISH group, I was able to finish the 1/2 marathon in January. The Donald medal hangs next to my bed. I am so proud of my accomplishment.

I am currently contemplating switching from the 1/2 to the full this year. I am registered for the 1/2 right now.

You made me giggle with your "4 minute mile" comment. :goodvibes I know you meant 14 minute mile. ;)

We have a great group of athletes on this board, and I am glad that you have decided to join us. :flower:

Welcome Krista! There's always room for one more. I think you live somewhere near our dogcatcher, Lily. Serious training doesn't start til Septemberish for most of us so you have time to build up your base.

Carrie...sorry 'bout that tetanus shot. They do hurt! I'm not much of a housekeeper either. DH is the neat freak in the family. I 'pile', which is a fabulous organizational technique...as long as no one else disturbs the piles. We're at OKW then POFQ. I could get up early and train...or I could get up early for EMH and breakfast ressies at Boma :rolleyes1

Krista - I'm the worst typist in the world! I wish you could spell check on these boards! I really needed to put my posts in Word, spell check and then paste them here. ;)

Mel - The pile theory is the best. My former boss never said a word about my piles, but ofetn commented on how I always knew where everything is. I must admit I'm losing that ability now that I've been going to 2 different offices for a few years. My dh is not a neat freak either. That's how we survive. Hmmm. Boma, train. Boma, train. Yeah, I see your point. Yes, the Def L. thing makes me feel old too. But so does a lot these days. Hanging out with my 18 yo SIL makes it really hard. Looks like you Lynne, Erin and NYcpa (forgot name) are going around the same time. You could train with them! I think that would kill me, but I think you could do it! ;)

I want to go to Disney! Waiting until January is killing me! The sad part is that will be 2 years btwn trips and that's the closest together I've ever gone!

Hi, everyone! It is so nice to be back here. I have tried to catch up on how you are all doing. I am SO impressed.

Lisa -- glad your back is on the mend. What a wacko situation about the car and the driver. :confused3 What did your PT think of that gadget you found?

Liz-- you must be so proud of yourself with how disciplined you have been about exercising! :cool1: You go girl!

Lily -- You crack me up! Do you know how wonderful it is to be able to count on someone to make you smile? :flower:

Helen -- that time sounds so impressive to me, especially in light of the rain and the glasses situation! I am also going to have to give some serious thought to the clothing for the 1/2 (walk). I am assuming dark colors are not smart and I am still inclined to hide myself in black or navy blue. Even without the rain, I am worried about a light color becoming transparent. ;)

Craig -- You are so diligent, even when away at "Executive Training"!

Krista -- welcome! You are going to love it here. These guys are the BEST!!!

[Looking forward to catching up with everyone soon]

I have been back to the gym 5x since getting back to the real world on 5/16, and it is not as much as I had been doing, but better than nothing.

Tried something new last night (all on the TM)-- walked 4 minutes at 3.8 mph and ran 1 at 4.7 mph and did 2 miles (including short, slower warm up) in around 31 minutes. Are these what everyone calls "intervals"? The night before I did 3.1 miles (5K) in 48:54, better than my best on-the-street time (which is usually even faster than the TM). I am going to try to perfect the 4/1 thing for 3 miles total and will then gradually change the ratio.

I never planned to run or jog any part of the 1/2, but the seeming difficulty of walking fast enough to hit a mile marker every 16 minutes makes me want to at least be prepared to jog whenever possible, to make up some time and to give myself some cushion.

Happy training, everyone!

Cobblestones? In a marathon course? At mile 17? I cannot imagine anything worse. As I tried my best to tippy-toe across them, my only thoughts were to not break an ankle, or fall and break a wrist, or manage to do both.

Cam

Not so diligent really. I ran the morning I left, then ran only 1 day of the 7 I was there. Between the jet lag, standing for 20 hours over 2.5 days, and walking all over London, my legs were completely shot the entire time. Plus I managed to pick up an intestinal bug on the day I flew home, so I've not trained since I returned on Friday. Hopefully today is an easy bike and lift. My body feels like it's been in the dryer for a few hours.

Krista

Welcome as well. I've run many halfs in my days, and this year my spouse ran the half for the first time ever. The day I registered her (a romantic birthday present  ) she was pretty fit from spinning, but couldn't have run 1 mile. 11 months later she finished in 2:33 and wore the medal all day. I'd encourage you to talk about your training all you can with your spouse. Given his experience in training for full marathons, he can help you over the rough patches and keep you from getting too excited when training is going well. Good luck.

Well, since my DW Krista just joined in the fun here, I figured I might as well post here, too. Let me first clarify by saying that I am by no means a long distance runner. I have never run a marathon before--in fact, I've only run 5K races to date. I ran quite a bit through high school and college, and then let my fitness slip after I graduated and got married (I know that NEVER happens to anyone else :) ). I started running again in January and have run some 5Ks in between. It's been a great way to get back in shape. I lost about 45 pounds and I'm actually back to my good ole' "fighting weight."
I work with a few guys who are distance runners and they usually run one marathon a year (the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati). One of these guys is a pretty close friend of mine and I run and race with him on occasion (in fact, we're teaming up for a triathlon in June), and he convinced me that I could handle a marathon if I trained for it. So I figured what better marathon than at our "second home" in WDW? :) I signed up last month and have been keeping up with my running pretty consistently--especially since I know that I'm actually going to be training for this monster in September. I'm doing about 22-25 miles a week, with my long runs being 6-8 miles on the weekends.
So I have a decent way to go yet, but I think I'll be ready by January.
Anyway, didn't mean to give a dissertation on my life, but I just wanted to say hi and thank you guys so much for this marathon forum. I've been reading all your posts for a few weeks now and it's amazing how much I've learned about the logisitics of the whole marathon (you know, all the insider stuff that only we know here on the DIS ;) ). It's great to see, too, all the encouragement that everyone has been passing around. I know I'll need it, too, especially on those dreary days when running just seems to be the last thing you want to do.
On a side note, has anyone checked to see if the DVC resorts are filling up yet for the marathon weekend? I know CSR is full or nearly full and other resorts are booking quickly, but we usually rent DVC points from members for a lot of our stays, and I was just curious if anyone has been told by Member Services that there is not much availability.
Thanks again! Hope to get to know all of you guys quite a bit over the next several months.

Steve - Welcome! Sounds like you should have no problem gearing up for the full. You're still ahead of dh and I who share a similar story of HS running. We're still in run 3/walk 2 mode, though. As for DVC, if you want to stay somewhere specific, I'd try ASAP. The 7 months window is opening soon for marathon weekend and that's likely when the smaller resorts will start filling up. I have SSR ressies right now, but am going to try to switch to BWV on the 13th when the 7 mo window opens for me. I can let you know then what MS says. It would not hurt to start making request now. I would imagine SSR and OKW will be open for a while yet, but that's JMO.

Wow--I have been such a lazy food stuffing in my mouth good for nothing to past few days. Enough to do the walk of shame--I tell you! Terrible, terrible!.

Had my follow up MRI today---if for anything...it creates an official record that the rear ending caused no actual injury to my lumbar region...so if in the future if I ever got into a car accident again (leaving that OFF the calendar)--then any injury obtained in a future incident can NOT be blamed on this accident. It was the one useful piece of advice I got from the attornies I saw.

Starting this week (haven't picked my day)--I am back on track. I really need to learn to eat only when I am hungry. I often just feed for psychogical reasons instead of nutritional reasons. I need to learn to make salads--I love them...I'm just so darn lazy. I mean how hard is it to open a bag of pre-washed lettuce. Lazy I tell you!

Going to try to talk hubby into letting us Book the polynesian for Saturday night and maybe Sunday night of Marathon. That way they can just walk over to TTC and catch me at mile 8 or 9....and then head over to MK to see me there...then they can do something and then make their way on monorail to EPCOT. I think that would be easiest for them. I need the visual support--and don't like the idea of them waiting 2 hours on a bus.

I'll still get my room with the team in training so no sleeping with the kids on marathon night.

Welcome aboard Kristen!!!!

OK--the planner and me is curious---does everyone want to do Trail's End again? I like the idea of doing it Friday before the Half myself. We can start a separate Wish Team Marathon Weekend events thread to keep this one clear of that. We can throw any info in regards to planning the weekend from alien headgear to the lime green shirts to dinners and outings and such. Last year I did keep a running tally towards the end of who was arriving when and where they were staying. That way individual WISHERS could hook up with others at their resort.

T-Shirts

I believe we decided on CoolMax Lime Green with the following saying:

Shoes...$90
Illegal MP3 player...$100
GPS...$150
Earning a Mickey(Donald) Medal ....priceless

I think we were going to put WISH Team on it too. I oculd not dig up the old thread, so I may have changed something slightly. Feel free to correct me.

Lisa - I love planning ahead, but will the thread be too hard to dig up if we start too early? See comment above. Brainstorm. We could put a link to it in the FAQs. :teeth:

I'm with you on the eating thing. Last week I was pretty much on an all carb diet. Make that bad carb. diet. I could not eat real food until yesterday. (Seriously, my stomach churned anytiem anything else came near my lips) I'm having a real hard time coming off that now. So, I'm right there with you.

Spectators - I think spectators should be trained to look for our shirts and try real hard to cheer for WISHers or TinT. I know my parents will yell for anyone. They loved being spectators in my HS days. My mom called track a bunch of little horse races. Anyway, as it gets closer, maybe we can coordinate where spectators will be. Don't know if it's at all fesible, but sounds good to me at the moment. I'm going to need a refresher on the best spectator areas.

Craig...sorry I missed you last time. London sounds cool! Are you Goofy fer sure yet?

Cam...glad to see you back! How's everything?

Guess we'll need 3 versions of the tshirt...one for Mickey, Donald and Goofy. :smooth:

Previous ideas for stuff to do during the marathon weekend:

Meet at Trail's End for dinner.
Illuminations dessert party
Illuminations/Wishes fireworks cruise
Watching NFL playoffs at ESPN club (depending on who's playing ;) )

I love the idea of a thread for this. Were you volunteering, Lisa? ;)

If we can get 10 rooms together, we can get a block. When we talked about this a couple months ago, most people were wanting to make their own arrangements, but I still have the info for the block if anyone's interested. I think several of us are DVC members or are renting points from DVC members.

Do you think we qualify for a grand gathering? ;)

If you stay at a DVC resort, and are there mostly for the race, Old Key West is the spot. From OKW it's about a 10 minute walk to the start of the full, and probably a 25 minute walk to the new starting line of the half. Beats the pants off the 2 hour dance to get to the corrals and then stand.

This year we stayed at POFQ the night before the race, and were in the corrals in less than 10 minutes.

Hey guys!

Carrie - I love the t-shirt idea but of course we would have to do something different for all three or try to incorporate all three into one. (did that make sense?)

for those asking about ressies, I did not have any problems calling in November (usually when the annual pass rates are out for the first of the year) to make a ressie for marathon weekend. But, with that said it seems as if it's going to be bigger than ever this year so it might not be a bad idea to make them early.

Mel - I LOVE the idea of trying to get together over race weekend. The more we talk the more excited I get!!! I wasn't even going to do disney this year b/c I had done it the past two years. Boy would I have missed out!

Lisa- hang in there with the eating, I feel your pain!!
Today was much better than yesterday but it seems that the more I excersise the hungrier I am. NOT FAIR!!!

tomorrow is hill play, I like it much better than speed play but the quads sure do burn running up them hills.....

I not trying to be rude on not answering your direct question, but I still don't know the answer to Goofy or not. If my training goes well I'll sign up, but between the travel, the bug, and some swelling in the always problematic left ankle (tendonitis = manageable, I'm worried that is actually is arthritis).

I hope to do some good training in June and July, and then I'll make a choice. If I go for it, the focus of effort will be the half, the full will just be an added treat. Geez, am I the Marquis de Sade, or what, calling that a treat? My wife does think I'm totally bats even considering it.

Craig, don't feel bad about not committing to the Goofy yet. Sounds like you had a nice trip, excuse me, "executive training" in London. I'm not willing to commit to Goofy yet either. What my dilemma is: am I doing the races "just" for the medals or am I going for a best time in the marathon? If I want to run a best time, I shouldn't do the half the day before. It would be an easy choice if the days of the races were switched, then I could still run the marathon hard and just do what I needed to get through the half. I'll decide mid-summer probably. If I'm not going to be near a Boston qualifying time(3:40) or if I'm pretty sure that I can get the Boston time at Portland then I'll go Goofy.

Welcome to all the additional new people(Steve, Krista, Alice, and anyone else I missed)!!!

So OKW is the better location? Darn, my sister has her heart set on staying at SSR so she's stumbling distance from getting a massage at the Spa and walking distance to the post-race party at DTD. We own at SSR but the next three trips(5 days, Oct, and Dec) are all booked at OKW and then marathon weekend we are booked at SSR. My 7 month window for the marathon isn't til June 9th so we can make a decision about which of the two we really want when we are down there next week.

So training- I was supposed to run 40 min yesterday after a rest day on Sunday. I waited til late afternoon, early evening to see if the weather cleared up a little. Nope, by that point the wind had kicked up to steady winds of over 30 and gusts up to 45 mph. It was also only in the 40s. Raining still right now, but not as windy. Today was a cross training day and swimming felt much better than it did Friday. Feel of the water sounds nebulous but it really is probably just muscle memory. While I'm whining about the weather, I looked at the information for three areas for the month to date: Orlando rainfall 1.36 inch, Pennellville NY 0.26 inch, Biddeford ME 3.75 inch. We have had 3 days where it reached 60 or above whereas Orlando had 1 day where the LOW was below 60. I miss Spring!!! I'm going to be going directly to summer by going to the World next week and then it's even hotter in San Antonio.

Lisa- I hope your back keeps getting better.
Liz- Good job, keep it up.
Carrie- I hope your job(paid employment) is going better.
Mel- I'm either going to be running from OKW really early(in the day) next week or treadmilling it in the Spa at SSR if it's too hot. I'm not going to worry about cross training days(walk at the parks and splashing in the pools count, right) and will be happy if I get three runs in.
Cam- It's good to see you back and remember that we are here for you.

Wow, you guys are an energetic bunch, both in running and posting! I felt really good today, except for my knees. I skied a lot when I was younger and tore a ligament and cartilage in my right knee but have not had a problem with it in like 10 years. There is some fluid on my right knee now, what do you recommend? I think anything that you set out to accomplish is about 90% mental attitude, and I have never had the mental attitude to run (no matter how much I admired that in other people) but you all are so motivating, I can really feel a change. No running today, I had my Pilate's Reformer class which was great.

I am excited about meeting you all in January (and just as excited to know my AP doesn't expire until the following week :). I have DVC at BWV and BCV, so maybe I'll reserve something in case the AP rates are not the greatest, I hate using points just for a long weekend, weekends are so expensive. Steve, I would think you would do better paying cash if you are not staying the whole week rather than renting points (unless you need something to accomodate more than two), just something to consider.

I love hearing about everyone's experience and accomplishments.

Thanks,
Alice

I've been MIA for a while, mostly due to low motivation & knee, hip & now back pain. Arthritis is not fun, nor is it conducive to training. I've been doing more swimming than anything else because that's the one thing that doesn't hurt too much. Besides, it has been in the high 80's-low 90's here and humid. Oh, I forgot about my big toe on my right foot. I stubbed it on a piece of rebar at our new house & it is now a lovely shade of purple!
Tomorrow DH & I are heading off to CT & NY for our first return visit since moving to FL. I understand it's cold up there - hopefully it will at least stay dry so I can get some walking in. Too bad, seems like we will be away while a few of you will be in WDW. Sorry to be missing you, but have a great time! Hey guys!
Hill play was good today. Did around 5 in 55 minutes. Not super fast but I'm pleased with it, especially since I was running my mouth the whole time. The hill we train on is a steep one.

Monte-the weather really depends. January 2004 it was perfect in the 50s but this past January it was in the 60s at the 6am start and I think it ended up being around 80 when I finished 5 hours later. The heat really did a number on me. I wouldn't think the weather would affect you as much as the altitude. You might want to get there a few days before the race to get aclimated to the weather (it will surely be warmer than Colorado) and the altitude.

wfloyd-I understand about the bugs, NC has quite a few of them too. If we suck one down we just gag and say well there's some extra protein for the day :rotfl2:

lisa-I am so incredibly jealous that you are going to the World tomorrow,
I hope you have an awesome time and you write a detailed report so I can live vicariously through your experience. November is a looong way away for me.

Monte - I am in Boulder, so I can understand your fear. In 2004 it was COLD, very cold. I have been running in the snow out here, but it just seemed colder there, maybe with the hummidity. In 2005 it was HOT, well not terrible when we started, but it got into the mid 80s by the time we finished (the half that is). The announcer said it was the warmest start in the history of the race. I most likely wont be that hot again. If you are doing the half, I don't think you should have a problem, you will be done before it gets too hot. Bring both cold and warm clothes, just in case.

Well--this January--it did get that high....but for the last several years it was :cold: in the morning....like in the 20s :cold: . I don't know what the high was on previous 'thons.....but those chilly mornings made for very nice racing conditions. This last time--very hot....I couldn't believe how hot it was and I live in Florida and trained in the weather. That should be a weather fluke though. I had taken off all my layers before the race ever started.

I'm sick of whining about the weather but I'm even more sick of the cold, rain, and wind. I was going to suck it up and run on a treadmill at the campus center tonight. The powers that be decided that this would be a great week to redo the floor of the fitness center so the cardio equipment is currently in the gym. That's okay for the ergs and some of the bikes but treadmills need to be plugged in. So I ran outside in the rain. It's like the medical students are the poor step children on campus. We start over a month earlier in the summer, come back 3 weeks earlier in January, and then keep going after the undergrads leave for the summer. We are REQUIRED to live off campus, etc. So we deal with reduced services and hours when they are gone. I did interview at a few medical schools that had it even worse auxillary services wise though and none of them were literally on the water so I still think I made the right choice.

Lisa- congrats on your fundraising and while I somewhat envy your trip to the World, I can't too green as I'll be there Sunday.

Monte- I'm in Maine but I don't heat acclimate well even in the summer so I'm hoping for 60s race time. I did a half ironman in the 90s with no shade on the run course a few years ago and then the ironman I did 3 weeks later was in the 50s, rainy, and windy all day. Both races caused the goal to become finishing for very different reasons. It just goes to show that you never know what the weather is going to do and you just have to prepare the best you can. BTW, both races were in July with one in Ontario north of Toronto(90s) and the other in the Adirondacks(50s).

For others from northern or mountainous climes: A suggestion for cross training and even replacing some of your runs when it hits late Nov-Dec, cross country skiing both skate and classical will work the muscles and can kick your but cardio wise(oh wait, that's just me). There's a great little place that grooms 40 K of trails about 20-25 minutes from me called Harris Farms- it's a dairy farm that sells milk in glass bottles. It's not Rocky Mtn skiing or even Upstate NY skiing but it was still fun to get over there this winter. I usually can care less whether I snowboard in any given winter, but I love skinny skiing and snowshoeing.

Time to study dermatology. Want to know what I've learned so far? Whenever I have a patient with something going on weird rash wise or something, I'm going to refer them to a dermatologist who actually chooses to look at those things.

Hey, not much to report, put my back out slightly Tuesday doing my power plate workout so walked my 5k last night - about 3km my butt cramped so badly I'm sure that half was 3 inches higher than the other half. It's better today though so may run tonight if the work demon's let me, and sadly, no Mel it's not even another book, my next one's due August 12th though so should really get started!!!!

Lisa: that's great news about your money, well done

Craig: yep, those slippy stones are part of the london marathon route, another reason why I've never done it.

Lynn: I agree, I wish the full was first, then I might be tempted to goofy - hopefully it's there for good though as I can't think of a better thing to do 3 weeks after my 40th birthday to convince myself I'm still 24!!!

Liz: Where are you, need 5 mile update.......sorry I've slipped off being good PM buddy, it's just frantic my end.

Anyway, got to go, need to try and track down Bill Phillips (the body for life guy) and see if he might want to chat to me for a piece. Helen

Good Morning!!! You will NEVER guess who called me last night...none other than our very own dog catcher...Lily! Yep, you know when Lily calls you while on vacation in the Carribiean you better be walking...sadly to say, I have been a bad girl!! Liz get your butt up...walk, walk, walk... :rotfl2: No real excuses except pure busyness! I still have the rest of the week to get 4 days in...and I am planning on getting the 5 miler in over the weekend! So to all who have encouraged me, thanks so much! I just gotta find some time in my day...the rest of you do, so so can I! :flower:

So, Lily seems to be having a great time. She said the beach walks are kicking her but, but she is doing it. She asked that I say a big :wave2: to you all and let me know that should anybody else need a phone call...... ;)

Welcome to all the newbies! So nice to see so many people here after all this time. I don't know what I would do without you...each and every one of you. :goodvibes

Sadly, it is time ot get ready for work, so I will have to sneak in a bit later. Work calls and I HAVE to get a walk in this evening!!!

Much love and lots of hugs to you all! Have a great day!!!

I have a shoe question for all you marathon experts out there. :goodvibes I went to the New Balance store after work to get some running shoes. I told the guy working that I needed shoes to walk/jog a half-marathon. The ones I got are awesome (I think they're 833's) and are very supportive because I get shin splits. I normally wear a 7, but I can get by in a 6 1/2 if the shoes are really cute. :teeth: When the guy measured my foot, he said that I wear a 6 1/2-7 and the shoe he gave me was a 6 1/2, in the store it felt fine, but I was wearing trousers socks that are thinner than the socks I would walk/jog in. I came home last night and since it was my off day, I didn't walk on the treadmill, but I put on the gym shoes with real socks, to see how they fit. Sitting down is fine, but when I stand up my toe is touching the edge of the shoe. My husband thinks they are too small and that I need to return them for a 7. I have no idea because they are the first gym shoes I've bought for actual walking/jogging, not just wearing with shorts, so maybe they are supposed to fit tighter? Please help!! I'm going to walk 2 miles on the treadmill (so I don't get them dirty if I need to return them) tonight and see how they feel. Let me know any advice you have.

What a dedicated dog catcher we have!

Liz - Don't make her interrupt her vacation again to call you! ;)

Lynne - :worship: I've been wonderring what the Boston was. Not thinking about making it, just wondering. Wow. Can you just walk the half or would you still worry about not being in good enough shape the next day?

Craig - Just read a thread that said no way can you walk to Epcot from OKW (too dangerous, WDW police would pick you up...). Is there an exception on race day? Since the race you really want is the half, I still think you should go for the Goofy. Just mix in some walking. (Easier said than done. Especially, when I'm not even considering the Goofy.)

Does anyone know if you can walk from BW or BC/YC on the day of or is Epcot closed there?

Helen - Sorry about your back. What do you write again?

Alice - Huge congrats to your dd!! Holy cow!!!!

Cam - So good to have you back on a regular basis again!

Lisa - Way to go with your donations! ALthough, you probably won't read this. You're at the world. Color me green with envy.

Nancy - Sorry about the arthritis. Swimming is a great alternative, though.

T-shirts. Sorry, forgot the Goofy. Don't know how. We'll have to check costs. I think it would be awkward to list all 3, but maybe if we put our
creative thinking caps on.

For those of you in the NE, sorry about that weather. I've been thinking about you and grateful that it's been a little warmer here. Maybe those of you in WDW could have Tink send them some pd for warmer, dryer weather.

Well, I ran 3.5 Monday in 40 min. Nothing spectacular, but I got out there and did it. The great thing was that the area above my ankle did not hurt at all! That's the first time in about a month! The bad thing is that it has to be the extended time my legs spent in Lake MI after my Saturday run. :cold: Darn, going to have to keep up the cold soaks.

I know people are leaving early, so I'm going to wish you a safe and wondreful holiday weekend now. (Well, except for the one's going to WDW. I wish you sunburn! :earboy2: Just kidding! Say hi to the Mouse for me! ANd Pooh-bear too if you see him!)

Krista, your husband is right. You need to return them for a bigger size. Your feet swell after a length of time on them(1/2 marathon) and not having enough space is a recipe for marathon toe. What is marathon toe, you ask? It's having your nail get painful, turn black and fall off. I lost the big toenail on my left foot after my first ironman but I know others that post here have had even more experience with this.

Krista - Just running in genreal pushes your foot to the front of your shoe. If you're touchin gthe end now, ther'll be probablems. It's typical practice to go at least 1/2 size up, dependign on how the shoes run. Have to agree with Steve on this one.

Thanks guys! I'm taking them back tonight and I'll be wearing running socks so I can see how they really feel. I knew I shouldn't have gone straight from work, but the New Balance store is only 5 minutes from my work and 25 minutes from home. Live and learn, we'll somehow get through this half marathon. :teeth:

Wow...lots of posts this week. I had a great vacation, but my knees hurt pretty bad when I walked. It took about 1.5 weeks to feel better. So...I haven't done much as far as working out. I went to the gym yesterday and walked 1.5 on the treadmill with a little pain. So...I called an orthopedic sports doctor and got an appointment tomorrow. Hopefully he will have great suggestions. I really want to do the 1/2 and running seemed to jump start my weight loss/toning better than anything else I have tried in the last several months. Hopefully, I will be back on track next week. I have got to find time to read all of the posts and catch up. Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone.

Hi, everyone!
Back to training to train, with a vengeance -- and believe me, my body is taking revenge today. ;)

Did 10 miles on the recumbent bike last night in 29 minutes. I noticed I had to work much much harder to get my heart rate to target which is absolutely bizarre and miraculous for me since my rate was wayyy too high, even after the surgery resolved the vtach. (My "resting rate" after the surgery has been around 115). Last night, working at my normal pace which would have had me around 126-135 had me at 112, so I was pleased to pedal a little faster to get it to 116 - 120.

Unfortunately, going over to the TM after that was not a huge success. I was only able to jog a couple of times for a bit over a minute each time and it took me a full 33:10 to do 2 miles because of shin splints. Thought I was pretty well warmed up and stretched, so not sure what was going on. I find that I am very impatient to start jogging, and maybe I need to write off the first half mile or so to a very slow, warm-up pace, instead of trying to jog after the first 4 minutes. Will have to experiment a bit. I think I am going to have to read MFM or do the couch to 5K program or SOMETHING, where someone else has figured this all out for me ahead of time, rather than messing things up on my own.

Just so impatient to get where I am going. I have visions of actually jogging a 5K in the next several months. What the heck am I thinking? :confused3 Or at least that is what my body is wondering! :teeth:

Woke up very sore this morning in my lower back and had to take some aleve. Wearing heels after a workout like that is no fun on the shins, either!

Thank you so much to everyone who has been so kind through my family's ordeal and who kept encouraging me to keep up with my training for my own mental and physical well-being even with all that was going on. You guys are the absolute BEST!!! :lovestruc It has been well worth it and I really don't feel like I lost as much ground as I know I would have without your support. :grouphug:

Okay, so what do you think? Couch to 5K for now? It just seems to take SOOOO LONG! Can you tell I am not a very patient person?

Hey everyone!

On our way out the door to WDW! We'll be back home next Thurs. Carrie has graciously agreed to spin the new thread on Sunday.

Krista...I vary from a 7.5 to 8 in shoe size, but the new Balance guy sold me an 8.5. I have the 753 cause I'm the High-Arched Supinator. Felt goofy at first 'cause they were so roomy, but now that I've got my mileage up, they're great. I think I'm going to start buying my reg Nike casuals in a size 8 for the extra room.

Gotta run! Will attempt to catch up with everyone next week! ::MickeyMo

Carrie

We are Boardwalk Villas DVC owners, and sadly you cannot get through EPCOT's international gateway on race morning. In 2004 I spent the night before the reace at the Boardwalk, and had quite the adventure getting to the starting line. While waiting for the gun I saw many folks slip over from OKW and get into the corrals with no trouble, I thought those guys are a lot smarter than I am.

So this January my wife and I spent the night before the race at POFQ, left the room at 5:30, and were in the corrals by 5:45. Quick and slick. I'm sure it would be very dangerous to try to walk from OKW or POFQ to EPCOT during the day, but before dawn on race morning it is the absolute easiest way to get to the corrals. You do not go through the large staging area in the EPCOT parking lot, you simply walk out and follow the music and lights.

With this year's half start 1 mile down the full course, we're again staying at POFQ. It should take 25 minutes of easy walking to get to the starting corrals, still easier than the bus, etc. thing.

Cam

I too am unable to get my heart rate elevated on the recumbent bike. It's really good for the quads without any pounding, but for heart rate training, running does a better job. My three training methods are running, the recumbent bike, and lifting, and combined they get me where I want to go.

Good luck all.

Craig

I am going to have to buy some new shoes to run in. Mine leave the lateral side of my Lt. foot in ALOT of pain. My shoes now are New Balance... but they are 7 months old, and I wear them pretty much all the time, even to work. There is a store in Tulsa (40 minutes from me) that is called Runners World, or something like that. A guy I know was telling me that they have you walk and run, and evaluate your form to get you into the best shoe for your foot. I think I am going to check it out, maybe this weekend if I get a chance. Is this a chain? Has anyone heard of this place? I am excited about it, I hope it is all it should be! :flower:

I "traded" in my 6 1/2 running shoes for 7 1/2 and they feel SO much better. Thank you so much for all of your advice. I did 2 miles on the treadmill (15 minute miles) and my legs felt so good that I think I could have done a third, but I decided to not get too excited and push it. I ended up getting New Balance 856 (I gave the wrong number in an earlier post) and they are awesome for my "over pronated" feet, which I just found out I had. That explains why I get shin splits so bad, even when I'm wearing heels to work.

Stephen and I are working on my Mom to do the half marathon, she called and told me tonight that she is seriously thinking about doing it, so we may have one more in our group. We just e-mailed her a bunch of links about the marathon and general marathon info, this would be her first race of any distance.

Well, I have to get to bed, everyone have a good weekend and enjoy the holiday!!

I was going to ask about foot issues too, ya beat me to it scanmom. I ran/walked 3 miles yesterday and my legs felt great today, but my feet were another story. I was wondering if callus's are common ailments for runners? I know I'm going to sound like an idiot  but I'm a bit neurotic about my feet, callus's will be hard for me to take. I hope I just need to get a new pair, and all will be well. Second question, can't I just go to Kohl's and get a pair of New Balances that feel ok, or is it really worth the money to go to the NB store and have them fit you? TIA

Alice, head to Fleet Feet in Piper's Alley! They will take great care of you and your feet!!!!!! They will analyze your walking and find a shoe that will be good for you! I spent about $100 on shoes and it was worth every penny and then some. Be sure to get some good non cotton socks as well. For the summer walks, I have found that I really like teh Wright socks. They are nice and light. In the winter I tend to like Thorlo Running Light socks. Of course socks will cost you about $10 a pair as well. And if you really want to take this just one step further....be sure to get some Body Glide too! Helps with chaffing and blisters for me! Of course you NEED a little MP3 player and a Garmin to be really hip.....

Glad to hear that everybody's training continues! I am really working on getting back to mine. Man, why is this SOOOOOOO hard. I am starting to think I could walk to work quicker that I could drive there  Spent almost 2 hours just getting home last night...needless to say, I did not walk. :guilty: Hoping to get a lot of walking in this weekend.....or at least something. I will get my 5 miler in though...that I do promise.

Off to work for me. I can't wait to hear about everybody's great weekends and all the good training that is happening. I am hoping to contribute to the good training this weekend! :goodvibes

Hi, everyone!

Krista -- So glad you got the right size shoes. They will make all the difference in the world for you.

Liz -- I am with you on the socks thing. I have found that the WRIGHT socks are wonderful! Sorry you are battling the commuter thing -- I would go absolutely nuts. Do you have great music or audiobooks to help pass the time? Can't wait to hear about your long walk this weekend!

Had a great session at the Y last night. :goodvibes Was planning to start Couch to 5K next week, but decided to give the first workout a shot last night, "just to see" and it was a MAJOR effort. Having to jog the full minute and then taking only 90 seconds to recover required a lot of discipline and positive self-talk! Here, I thought the plan would be so slow and drawn out and that I wouldn't have the patience for it, but I think every single workout is going to be a challenge, so that will keep it interesting.

Week 1 Workout 1 was 5 minutes of brisk walking and then alternating 1 minute of running with 90 seconds of walking for a total of "only" 20 minutes. The 90 second "recovery" time seemed generous at the beginning, but then got very "short" for the last 2 runs. But, only having to run a minute was enough of a mind game that I could convince myself to do it.
I put the plan in a chart for myself with the start and stop times on it (rather than the intervals or the miles), so that it would be easier to follow on the digital timer on the treadmill. I don't think I could do it outside because I would probably trip over something looking at my watch all the time. ;) Also, I chose to do it by time, rather than distance, because I can't run yet (only jog) and I didn't want to get discouraged with a very long, drawn out workout.

I covered 1.26 miles. 15:52 minute mile pace. Did the walking at 3.5 mph and the jogging at 4.5 mph. Hope to eventually pick up to 3.7 and 4.7. Maybe by the end of next week. BTW, this is the first time I have EVER had calf cramps after doing any kind of exercise. I walked them off in less than a minute, though, and went on to ride the recumbant bike for 10 miles. Oh, and Craig, I was able to get my heartrate up this time. Maybe it was already a bit elevated from the walk/jog experience. :teeth:

Krista - good choice changing out those shoes, your feet will be glad you did. My shoes are a size and a half bigger than my normal size and they feel so great..like cadillacs.

Monte-good job on those 2 miles! Hope 6 will be just a great.

Cam - You are doing GREAT! I remember when I ran 7 minutes the first time without stopping I was totally amazed at my accomplishment. I have been running 9/1s for any race half marathon distance or longer and I watch my watch like a hawk, yes I have tripped quite a few times but if I look down and see I only have 5 minutes left then I know I can run that much longer...does that make sense? Keep up the good work!!

My name is Helen and I am a bad runner..... today, I set off to do two hours, did two minutes, thought blow this and came home. So totally not in the mood, went to the gym and pulled the lat machines around a bit but didn't feel like that either, so I came home and went back to bed. I will have to go tomorrow however, I've got a half in Australia in six weeks so I've got to get my distance up again over the next four weeks. I'll therefore save anyone watching the weather channel - tomorrow in NZ it will THROW it down.

Sitting here waiting for the cat sitter to come for their interview. Trying having people in when we go to Oz as I don't want to leave the furbaby alone for three weeks when we come to Disney, but not sure how she'll take people in her house so figured we'd try a short stay first- talking of which where's Ham gone, I still haven't seen a picture of Lilo T Fluffycat!!

My name is Liz and I am a bad, bad walker! I set out to go to work today....had to deliver some paperwork to a location about 2 hours from my house. Got to work form home after....so I went and walked about a mile or two all over campus trying to figure out where I was suppose to deliver this crap to, didn't work, didn't walk. In fact, I made some ridiculously high calorie dinner, dessert included, ate and fell fast asleep before 8 and just woke up now from my little nap....thinking I need to crawl back to bed and stay there for a nice long time.

How I am ever going to make it through this half marathon, I have no idea. Even Greg was laughing about me making it through. I seem to have lost my omphf! OK, so tomorow is a new day! I will get that five miler done this weekend...some way some how!! After all, it is all my fauly that I have TWO people coming here from TWO differant states to do this with me. OK, I am headed to bed now. I think the carbs have doen their job and I am a pooped puppy! I am going for a sleep record today and think I just may get in well over 12 hours!! Whoo hoo! Yeah for the long weekend. Guess I will catch up on life tomorrow once I am well rested.

Good Morning my DISfamily!!
I took a sculpting class today..no running though. Will probably run Monday.

First of all Alice- YOU ARE KICKING BUTT!!! Just getting out there and doing it means that you are, and you can be proud of yourself. I think I read somewhere that marathoners (I'm going to include halfers in there) make up 1% of the population. It may be more it may be less but hey just think that probably 90% or more of the people would rather sit around getting fatter, and more un-healthy. Plus my friend's mom just read that runners live on average 2 years more than most non-runners. TWO YEARS. That's 730 more days to enjoy and appreciate life!! So my friend you ARE kicking butt. :cheer2:

Monte/Monica- You were wondering if it was ok to take a two day break after your runs/walks. I will usually take the day before a long run off and the day after off. I may do something low-impact like weights or cycle but no running, and after a super long run (like 12 miles and up, I'll take two days off) It's important to let you body rest and recover. That's a good way to aviod injury. Keep up the good work!

Liz- My poor Liz. You are not having a good week, but you WILL be able to do this. You have plenty of time before you need to buckle down. So remember to have fun and don't let your walks become a chore.
Stay positive ok?

Helen - I just think it's so cool that you live in New Zealand and you're going to Australia to do a half! I hate those days when I have no motivation to get out and do it. Sometimes I'll push through it and sometimes I'll give in and veg out in front of the TV and eat. Maybe you just needed a rest yesterday. Ok, so my DH just told me that Australia is really close to NZ, but I don't care I still think it's cool.

Hope you all are having a good Saturday! Later for now.

Congrats Zoe on the decision to go Goofy.

So I didn't have much better week than Liz and Helen. I ran Weds in the rain, swam for cross training Tues, moved out of my apartment in ME on Fri with the assistance of NYcpa(mom) and Stitch_lover_Sith(sister). It was almost midnight when we got back to Upstate NY last night. I did get in my 6 mile "long" run today on the Oswego Cty Rec Trail. Not quite 3 miles into a thunderstorm blew through but it didn't rain at the house 4 miles away. I'm convinced that the rain is following me. It wasn't cold though so that was a plus. I'm now 2 weeks into the MFM run program. This coming week may be a challenge to get my workouts in but for a far better reason. We leave the house in 9 hours to head for DisneyWorld. Hopefully I can get at least 3 runs in.

I'll catch up with everyone in a little over a week. Good luck with training everyone.
