use year and points year

i'm trying to figure out what year points I am getting. Ok my use year is September. So this September am I getting '01 points or '02 points. Sorry this always confuses me.

The points you get Sept. 1, 2001 are for use between Sept. 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002.

On September 1, 2001 you will be getting points that can be used for stays between 9/1/01 through 8/31/02.

If you bank the points you get on 9/1/01, you can use them for stays between 9/1/02 through 8/31/02.

When you see general references to "2001 points" or "2002 points" that is usually a reference to any points issued in that year (even if it is December). Thus, you will get your "2001 points" come Sep which are good for any trip through Aug 2002.
