My family and I (2 DD ages 5 and 9 and Dh) are planning a 5 day/4night stay in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg this summer. We have our accomodations booked already and we are also going to Dollywood for a day and a half due to buying the tickets after 3 pm the evening before. We have never been to this area for a trip before and would like to know of any budget-minded places to visit or things to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :sunny: TIA!!

We love vacationing in that area. We love going to the national park http://www.nps.gov/grsm/ (free!)and riding through, stopping whenever we wanted to, walking on the rocks in the streams and just looking at all of the beautiful scenery. You can take a picnic and stop at one of the picnic areas along the way.
Cades Cove http://www.cadescove.net/ is a driving tour that is nice and scenic and I believe it is free also. They do offer a guide book for Cades Cove and I think it was maybe $1, but very informative. you can take a picnic and stop at one of the picnic areas along the way.
As far as Pigeon Forge, there are TONS of outlet malls. Lots of good deals to be had!
You will have a blast! It is so beautiful there.

I second Cade's Cove...just drive around, take a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery. We spent hours walking through the streams. We go there often, as it is close to home. We love to shop (but it wouldn't be a budget trip then) and love to eat and there are a few places we always go to (Apple Barn...in Pidgeon Forge has an ice cream and candy shoppe as well as gift shops). You can do a lot of things there, but if you're looking for free things....a drive is your best bet. We like to ride the tram thing (what's it called???) and spent some time looking around that area.

I second taking time to explore the Great Smokey Mountain National Park - it's beautiful!

There are lots of good hiking trails and waterfalls to see in the national forest. we spent a lot of time there. We also loved Cade's cove. All of those free. We brought a lot of picnic lunches. We also had fun at the outlet malls and went to Cherokee. On the strip in Gatlinburg, we bought combo passes for Ripleys and the aquiarium. We had so much fun. There is so much to do, we can't wait to go back. It was the first vacation that we actually spent way less than we brought! There was just so much free stuff and we cooked in our cabin a lot too.

Thanks so much for all the great tips so far. We don't have to do free things as much as just cheaper things. We definitely want the girls to see some nature in the Smokey Mtns as they don't see much when we go to Disney (aside from AK, of course!!) :rotfl: Also, I heard there was a Disney outlet store down there. How is it? I have to get my Disney in somewhere since we aren't able to go this year!
The great thing about buying your tickets after 3pm is that many people are leaving the park for the dinner theaters and you'll be able to do many rides without much wait. Then in the morning get there early and do the things you missed out on the night before. We loved Dollywood. Its really a great park.
We only went for Dollywood (on our way to Chicago) for those two days, so didn't hit any other things in the area. So can't give you other ideas.
Have fun! -HM

We went to Dollywood and were not impressed and got our money back..maybe we are just too Disney park spoiled..
The aquarium is a big hit with our kids but the Believe it or Not museum is pretty lame (in our opinion)
Cherokee is interesting but beware its a harrowing drive through the mountains. I was gripping the seat the whole time (its VEEEEERY high up) -
We loved Cades Cove as well but allow alot more time then you think if you want to stop at each section..and bring food as they dont sell any there and its a decent long drive back and forth AGAIN through high mountains..
Did I mention that the mountain roads are HIGH???
Also alot of people seem to enjoy taking the chair/ski lift thing up to get great views of the area. Not me, I have a fear of heights which you have probably figured out!
There is a Disney outlet but its a catalog outlet I believe and its very hit or miss and there really isnt alot in there (at least the 2 times we were there)

I'm surprised that you disliked Dollywood so much (and really surprised that you got your money back). We've been season pass holders there for more years than I care to think about. Sure .... it's not Disney, but there are at least a few rides for every age. This year they've added several new ones. We enjoy the shows even more. Excellent music all over the park. We also particularly like the special events. Right now they are doing the Festival of Nations where they bring in entertainers from all over the World. We've been to it once this year and would have gone again Sunday had not one of our children been sick. We saw a Russian circus, Chinese acrobats, incredible acapella singers from Zambia, and others. They also do a Kids Fest starting in June that is marvelous for the smaller ones. The Harvest Fest in the Fall is not to be missed and they decorate the park up more than Disney does at Christmas.
We hit the Disney Catalog Outlet every time we pass buy. Sometimes we find great deals, but not always. You also have to watch their prices as we saw a jacket for about double the clearance price we had just paid in the regular Disney Store at the mall.
We have a few other favorite stores in the same mall that we usually hit. The Pepperidge Farm outlet is a must. My kids usually want to go to the Old Navy and Aeropostle outlets. There's also a Skeechers outlet, but we never seem to find any bargains there. It's a huge mall and they seem to add another building every time I go by there. A Google search for Tanger Five Oaks will get you all the info on it.
President Bush was coming to Cades Cove for Arbor Day last week, but there were tremendous storms in the area, so he spent the day in an airport hanger instead. Lots of disappointed locals that had hoped to get a glimpse of him.

Just a tip about Cade's Cove - our favorite place in the mountains. If you plan to go later in the day - around 4pm - and take your drive then, you are more likely to see lots of deer and even bears. We have been lucky at the evening times and seen bears on every trip and we have also been within 15 foot of the deer there - they are really used to people and sometimes you don't realize that they are even there until you hear a little rustle in the leaves! If you go to the picnic area before you enter Cade's Cove - or at the end, whichever you choose - it's a great place for the kids to walk through the stream. It's very shallow - and very cold. My kids think that is the best part of going there. They play in the stream-it only comes to about their ankles. I never knew that in 80 degree weather, the mountain water is still like walking through ice water! My kids also liked the aquarium, plan to spend at least a few hours there as there is a lot to see. We also liked Dollywood - and we must have ridden the water ride a 20 times! If you bought the combo ticket, the water park is GREAT! We ended up spending an entire day there, from open to close. Anyway, have a great time!

We love the area. There are a lot of cheesy things to do, like Ripley's and I think "Cooter" from Dukes of Hazzard series has a museum there. It is nice to park and then walk up and down thru Gatlinburg. There are mini golfs and a couple of short movie rides with the moving seats. Look for coupons, they're everywhere. If you do the Track in Pigeon Forge, you can get tickets online cheaper. The go-karts are great fun. At Ober Gatlinburg there is an ice skating rink (at least it was there last time we went). There are trams to take you from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg and you can toodle around each location on the trams if you don't mind waiting. I think they are .25 cents to ride or something cheap like that.

Oh and I forgot about The Mill and The Apple Barn. Both are GREAT places to eat! The Mill has fresh milled breads and stuff and you get corn fritters and chowder, your meal and then dessert, all included in the price. Then there are a few shops to walk around to walk some of that food off. The apple barn has fresh milled cider, apple fritters and apple butter to go with your meal. Again, it's so much food, but luckily as mentioned above, there are a few little shops to walk around as well. They are both the best places to eat, and not expensive at all. I think they are both in Pigeon Forge. Just be sure to go hungry!

When you pull into town stop of one of the ticket buildings you see coming into town and pick up a coupon book. There are several buy one get one half off meals and mini golf in there. There are sevearl other coupons in there for free hour of floaties for the lazy river with the purchase of an hour or there are coupons for discounts into the museums. I HIGHLY reccommend Dixie Stampede. The show is fun for your family and the food is decent (just be prepared to eat with your hands..lol).
Other great places to eat
The Apple Barn
The Old Mill (use the coupons and buy some fudge and also look at all the shops in the mill area)
There is a mexican resteraunt in Gatlinburg next to the aquarium that is a great place to eat.
We also like the Smoky Mountain Brewery for their burgers and my dh likes to try the different ales.
Have a great trip but be prepared for the awful awful traffic. I do love going up there though. My dh and I try to go once or twice a year.

Thank you again! :goodvibes

Ditto on the Old Mill. Yum. Go VERRY hungry. Even at lunch. And we love Dollywood. Course it helps that we love country & bluegrass music. DH says Pigeon Forge is like Myrtle Beach without the ocean.

We went and hated the area. I can't even describe how much we hated the area...I really do hope you have better luck. The national park was wonderful and such a fresh change from the the city. Even my kids who love amusement parks and aren't bothered by crowds hated the area, aside from the national park, which is wonderful.

I HIGHLY recommend the Comendy Barn. It is good clean fun!! Any age above 4 or 5 will have a blast. It is put on by people who own it who wanted clean entertainment for their families. We've been twice and loved it. :cool1:
I also recommend the magician. Can't remember his name, but he has matinees and night shows. We took the kids to the matinee. The theatre was nearly empty. He is a great magician and at the end of the show he comes out and meets the audience.
We also did a day at Ober Gatlinburg. It is an old fashioned amusement park pay as you go, or do a wrist band. We loved the alpine slide (my kids were 10 and 13 at the time) Little ones can't do the slide.
While Dollywood is certainly not Disney, we still had fun. Last time we went we voted not to go and spent extra days in the National Park and Cherokee instead. We enjoyed the Indian Village in Cherokee, but little ones would probably get bored.
Hope you enjoy yourselves. We did! It's not Mickey, but we can't go every year.

I guess our problems with Dollywood started when it took us over an hour at an almost traffic standstill just to get inside the gates..and then it took another half hour to get to the parking lot which was way in the back so we had to catch a "ride" to the entrance to the park. We were all a little cranky then (yes it was a busy time there but not acceptable in our opinion)
Many of the things were not open (and this was a holiday week) and we didnt see many shows unless you count the one you have to pay extra for because its supposed to be better..which we werent paying extra for a show
All we saw were stores and food (and our food at the restaurant we ate at was ice cold)..
I will say our kids went on the little cars you can drive about 20 times since that was the only thing they liked.
After all that the letter I sent after we got home prompted them to give us a refund. I guess we just were not impressed with the place.

It has been many years since I have been to Dollywood but reading your posts it doesn't seem to have changed. We took my son and his girlfriend (now his wife) who were 17 and 18 at the time. They just loved it and talk about going back and bringing their children. I remember it being a very inexpensive vacation. I enjoyed shopping at the outlet malls and the Christmas Stores (I remember at least 2 big ones). We went to Ober Gatlinburg and I was petrified on the tram. My son and GF loved the ice skating and the other rides. They also enjoyed the pool at the hotel and the freedom they had at night to go to the arcades which were within walking distance. I am real picky about restaurants and I remember that we went into Gatlinburg each night to eat (restaurants were great) and we would then walk around and play miniature golf or go on the ski lifts. Everyone still laughs that I bought my husband and son tickets to go on inner tubes down the river. The only problem was that it was during a draught and it was hard on their posteriors. It was not Disney World but it was a fun but inexpensive vacation.

Our family goes to the area 2 times a year, usually. We spend the days in the mountains and the evenings in town. One evening is usually putt-putt in Pigeon Forge and the other evening is Shopping in Gatlinburg. Although last time we weren't in Pigeon Forge at all.
If you go to the Apple Barn there are 2 restaurants. The front one is regular restaurant style, the back one is family style. Most of my siblings prefer the family style one. Don't forget to shop in their store. There is also an apple barn store, not a restaurant, in Townsend, TN.
If you go to Cherekee there is a wonderful waterfall not far from the city that is only 1/4 mile walk each way.
We have been to almost all the waterfalls in the Smokey's that are 8 miles or less round trip. PM my DH, shep, if you want more information on them.
That are little specialty shops in Townsend, TN and in Gatlinburg (off the beaten path) if you are looking for something different.
If you are staying in Pigeon Forge and are going to the Mountains you may want to go through Wear's Valley to avoid traffic.
Biking through Cades Cove is awesome. You need to go early in the morning or as the sun goes down to really see nature.
We haven't been to Dollywood, just never have time with the hiking we like to do. We have been to Dixie Stampede. For us it was okay to do once, but not something we would do again. My sister did the Jamboree Bear thing and loved it.
The Disney outlet is there. It is at the beginning of Pigeon Forge, the end farthest from Gatlinburg, on the left-hand side.
The last time we did Obergatlinburg you got a stamp for the weekend and could go as many times as you liked. I am not sure if they still do this.
When shopping, price things, then go back to the cheapest store...especially for shirts. The prices vary from store to store.
We don't shop much or do the 'in town' things too much, sorry I couldn't help you there.
Enjoy your trip.

I agree traffic is just awful in the whole area. We go in the "back way" to Dollywood and usually avoid the Parkway (the main drag) altogether unless we want to go to the outlet stores or the Apple Barn for the best donuts ever. They have been working on a new road through the area (sad to see the farm land paved over), so maybe things will improve. It seems to be taking an unreasonable time to finish, though.
Dollywood also falls short in running transportation to the parking lots. They could take lessons from Disney, for sure. I've had to wait several minutes for trams at the end of the day, which is not usually what anybody wants after a long, hot day. We usually try to get there early in the day so we can park within walking distance of the entrance.
I also agree that Dollywood could use some improvement in the dining department. I've had a couple of meals that I was disappointed in and only have a few things that I really enjoy eating there. The booths where they cook potatoes and a chicken/onion/pepper concoction in huge iron skillets are usually quite good. They also make a decent Fried Green Tomato during the harvest fest.
I've never been there when there wasn't a full page schedule of shows, so I can't imagine what happened when you were there. They seldom do the extra ticket shows any more. I've been to a couple of them and found them usually a good value. I've also seen some wonderful free entertainment. A couple of years they had BIG names in for the Bluegrass weekend. Years ago we sat on hay bales and listened to Allison Kraus for free. Usually it's more local talent, but quite good overall. And the stage shows are excellent, too. If you enjoy gospel music, the Kingdom Heirs are wonderful.
Sadly the little cars (which was my son's FAVORITE) were removed this year to make room for the new rides. There are several rides for the little ones now.
To the poster that mentioned they didn't like the whole area, I tend to agree that the tourist hoopla is a bit much, but they seem to rake in the money, so I guess somebody likes it.
I also agree that the Comedy Barn is fun. It is VERY corny, but the whole family liked it. We go to Dixie Stampede about once a year. Haven't tried the Black Bear Jamboree yet, but it looks yummy. My DS11 auditioned for a job there a couple of years ago, but didn't get the part.

also loved Ripleys...
I love that area!!

The side of the mountain putt-putt is called Hillbilly Golf. It is at the 'bottom' part of Gatlinburg. This is one of DH's favorites.
I think I would have like Dixie Stampede more if it wasn't for the food. I just don't like an entire chicken sitting on my plate, I usually eat boneless. If you are a picky eater it may not be the place for you since everyone is served the same thing.

My family and I have been going to the Smokies since I was 4...I am 26 now. We usually go down at least 5 times a year. It is about a 2 1/2 hr. drive from our house. We love DollyWood! They have a new water park, which we aren't fans of water parks, but have other relatives who highly recommend it..Splash Country is the name. Outlet shopping is very big in the area too.Gap, Old Navy, Coach, Nike...to name a few. Dinner theaters have become popular in the last couple years. Dixie Stampede and Black Bear Jamboree are 2 of my favs. Although the price is $36.00 + tax each for adults. To me the shows are better than the food. I highly recommend staying at Eagles Ridge Resort. These are log cabins just 2 miles off the main parkway with all the amenties of home :) If a motel is more of the stting you want and if you want to stay "down town" we recommend the James Manor. Again we have stayed there and have had no complaints...other than saying no to our dog :sad2: Up in Gatlinburg there is Ripley's Aquarium, which we have been to several times...but to us 1 Ripleys is the same as the others. If you have anymore questions, please personal message me or email me :wave2:

We love it in that area, and we like Dollywood when we visited (but it has been about 7 years since we were there).
They had a neat policy that if you go into the park after 3:00 pm one day, you can come back the next day free. Here is the info from the website:
March 26 - October 28, 2005, our "After 3:00 PM" program allows you to enter Dollywood after 3:00 PM and get in FREE the next operating day. Parking fees are not included. This program is valid on one-day Dollywood® admission tickets March 26, 2005 through October 28, 2005. It is not valid during the Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival.
It was nice because we had small children when we went, so we could go for 3-4 hours the first evening, and then back the next day for another 3-4 hours. The kids didn't get exhausted that way.
If you go, see if they still have the antique merry-go-round running. It was neat to see one of those still working. Also, the train actually runs on coal like in the old days.
If you get the Travel Channel, they do have a special on Dollywood that airs from time to time. You may want to check that.

If I am remembering correctly Belle Island is a shopping complex....to be...right? Also I think it is going to be located around light number 3. Behind the Family Inn Twin Malls .I looked at the plans....can't remember where and it looked something like a shopping center around a lake...think Broadway at the beach in Myrtle Beach , SC. As for Jurassic Ride I have never seen anything on it. I agree with Marthachick...Pigeon Forge is Myrtle Beach without the ocean.A for a great round of putt putt....try Lost treasures..I think is the name at the farther end of town.

Sorry to say they removed the antique carousel and replaced it with a more modern one. The only good thing is the old one went too fast and always made me dizzy. The new one is more gentle, though not nearly as beautiful.
The trains are still running. They are a particularly nice ride in the Fall when the leaves have changed.

Our kids love to do the panning for gems. You buy a bucket of dirt and then sift through it with water and shaker pans to find the stones. They will tell you what each of the stones are and they are a neat souvenir. They will try to sell you jewelry made out of your stones but you don't even have to go inside for that part, we always skip it. My girls love their pretty rocks and it's the first thing they want to do everytime we go. Can't remember what the going price is, but ours always split a bucket and have a great time doing it.
The aquarium is expensive but well worth it in our opinion. You can sometimes find coupons for a few dollars off. It will take the better part of a day if you take your time.

We were there two years ago and did the Roaring Forks Motor Nature Trail in Gatlinburg. What an awesome drive! I have a photo of the Place of a Thousand Drips (on the trail) hanging in my living room today!
Ooh, my sis and I did this (did not have time to get to Cades Cove and through it before dark), and it was scary!!! Actually, the abbreviated version where you stay on the 2 lane blacktop would be fine. We decided to do the whole thing, though. Where you turn off, the road goes up, up up and is one lane. If you are not used to mountain driving, you might wnat to skip that part. It was drizzly and overcast the day we went, and it got dark before we finished. Great sights, but as I said, the driving was scary!! The road on the driver's side was a sheer drop w/ no kind of railings.
On another subject, I have some tips:
1) To save money and time parking at Dollywood, drive over to Patriot Park and take the trolley. Unless they have changed the price, we paid only 50 cents each way, and they drop you off right at the front gate. You can also take the trolley to Gatlinburg and back for I think either 75 cents or $1 each way. If you are not staying in downtown Gatlinburg, parking is kind of scarce.
2) In downtown Gatlinburg across the street from the aquarium, there is a little shop called The Lemon Tree. This is a great place to get quilts for a really good price. They're not Amish quality, but good for the price.
3) Be sure to check out the Thomas Kinkade gallery. Even if you don't buy anything, it's neat to see the paintings under the low light conditions.
Where are you staying? We stayed at the Shular Inn in PF. Nice place for a great price! I want to go back soon as I spent way too much time shopping at the outlet malls and not enough time sightseeing.

I very much like the idea of taking the trolley's, esp to Dollywood since some have commented on the terrible parking there. We are staying at the Super 8 across the street from Dollywood. I picked there because we are going to be doing more in P.F. Plus the price is right and they offer a free continental breakfast, which will be fine for us.
I really appreciate everyone's ideas. I had gotten some brochures sent to me but you were MUCH more informative. You are really going to make our trip much more fun!! With all there is to do, I wish we had more $$ to stay longer. I am going to try to come back with money we didn't have to use so that I can start my Disney fund. I want to go back the beginning of next June again. :earsgirl:

Two things I forgot to mention in my previous post:
1- Some motels sell Dollywood Tix where you can get in 2 full days for the price of 1. Check with your hotel on this.
2- If #1 not available stop by a local convenience store & check out the Coke cans. Sounds crazy I know, but last time we went to PF, we were on our way home & we stopped for a Coke and guess what was on our cans?!? We could have saved $30. :sad2: Worth a look anyway!
Tina, If you live close to TN and are a military wife, I'll bet we are neighbors.
We love Gatlinburg. Our DD 10 REALLY enjoyed the Dixie Stampede. Our favorite mini-golf place is Hillbilly Golf. And I have been to the Disney outlet 2-3 times and have never really had good luck.
Have fun!

We were just there in March. It was our first time too. BEAUTIFUL place. HEre's a few tips..
1. there are people EVERYWHERE offering you "$100" to "view" some new condo they are building. IGNORE them.
2. Just get out and walk around in Down town Gatilinburg. You can park your car for about $6 and just enjoy the day. There are lots of little odd "museums" and such you can pay to go into or you can just soak up the atmosphere.
3. If your family is a Dukes of Hazzard fan "Cooters Garage" is a must. THere are cars from the show and lots of memorabilia inside. and it's FREE!!!
4. If you want to go out to a special resturant while you are there I HIGHLY reccommend "The Peddler". It's off the strip in downtown Gatlinburg so alot of tourists don't know it's there. AMAZing salad bar and great steaks. Kids eat for 50cents times their age. (ie..my DS who is 2 years old ate for a dollar)
5. If you are teddy bear fans look for the LARGE barn off the main highway in Pigeon Forge. It's a Boyd's BEar mall. It's HUGE and filled with nothing but Boyd's bears. It's free to get in and there is lots to see. (and buy if you want to) There is also a resturant there that I heard is tasty.
6. Lots and Lots of pankcake houses. Try one. YUMMY
7. Cades cove..beautiful
8. The outlet mall..pretty good deals. We hit the disney store and bought tons of stuff for rock bottom prices.
I guess that is it. I hope you guys have a great time. It's a beautiful place to visit.

I beleive the Peddler is also known as the park grill. I know The Patk Grill is going south---last rest on the left-----Thomas Kinkade on the left---not to far. This is the rest as I posted earlier that kids eat for half their age. I have ornaments from there--and they are packed away!! Lots of wood out front -- gorgeous restaurant!!

The place is in town on River Road. It is in walking distance to downtown. It's been a couple of years sense I've stayed there. They did have a continental breakfast, (donuts, muffins etc) standard. Covered parking lot. It's only a few years old, so it's clean. And it sits by my favorite place to eat the Peddler. Bennett's Barbeque is near by as well, it's good.

If you are interested in renting a cabin, we used Mountain Rentals of Gatlinburg http://www.mountainchalets.com/
They always have great specials like the 4th and 7th night free or 1/2 off the 3rd night if you'll only be there 3 nights. Plus they have the lowest rates on cabins anyway. I think we paid about $95 a night with the 7th night free. It's more expensive than a hotel (maybe?) but you can save a lot of money because the cabins have full kitchens, so you don't have to eat every meal out.

I'm not too sure about Santa's land, the rides, I think they are per ride or you can get a wrist band....not WDW rides...but, they have the greatest candy apples you have ever tasted...huge and I have never seen them with walnuts on it! They are closed on Sundays...during the winter months...so is most of Cherokee that time...
we live about 4 hours from PF and Gal and we love Dollywood...good clean park...we did do the water park one time...we had a blast...I dont usually like the pool time but loved the lazy river, good toddler area and wave pool. You have got to at least like country music somewhat to enjoy DW, it's all through the parks, take heed, the train ride is very hokey. I agree with the other poster who thought the parks were nicley decorated for the fall and winter times...have been to both and very nice.... probably my favorite time to go... I was excited to hear that they added more rides to the country fair area this year that area need more... Has any one been, what are the rides? Sorry so long but had to read through all the posts...we are too planning a trip this summer, May 31-June 3...

AspiringCindy... We went to Santa's Land last year for the 1st time in several years, and it was ok. Honestly, I live in the area, and I wouldn't even waste my time on it again! We decided to buy AP's at Dollywood this year instead, and enjoy it ALOT more! At SL, there are only a few kiddy rides, a petting zoo, a little train, a few carnival games, and that's about it! Not worth the $20 or so! :sad2:

We love going to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg! We are there 3 or 4 times a year. (a friend owns a cabin there :) ) I must agree with the others on eating at the Mill restaurant. It is a must. The food is incredible. The Apple Barn is a must as well. Cades Cove is a beautiful place and we have always seen deer when we go there. Only once did we see a black bear. There is so much shopping there. We really love to go in the Fall, it is absolutely breath-taking and they have a lot of arts and crafts shows/fairs going on. I just know you and your family are just going to love it. We are going in June and I can not wait.

We went for the first time in the Spring..so I'm not sure about times to go in the fall. I am from Alabama..so I can tell you that the leaves are nicely "turned" here by October.
We didn't go to Dollywood..but we did see it. It's in PF. WHere our cabin was located (we rented from www.patriotgetaways.com ) we were directly in between PF and Gatlinburg. It was a very nice location. We spent more time in Gatlinburg..but could have gone to PF just the same.

Had to add my 2 cents worth. We've been down there the last two years. All of the eating places mentioned are great! Especially Apple Barn and Old Mill. Yum!
We enjoyed Dollywood. It had a little bit of something for everyone. Just don't go expecting Disney. It's a whole different experience. Although the Aquarium is a bit pricey I'd so go for it if you've never been to one. If you want to save money I would definetly leave out the Ripley's Believe it or not things. They have anattractive outside to get you in but we were not impressed. Especially for the amount of money you have to pay. For me going to the Smokies is about the scenery. I'm not big on downtown Gatlinburg. I just enjoy taking it easy and relaxing. I'm a fan of renting a cabin. Yes they cost more but the views are wonderful! And you could save money by fixing food and grilling out! I know you said you already had your reservation, but if you would like a truly breathtaking view, in the most beautiful log cabin and only a couple minutes from Pigeon Forge yet secluded PM me and I can give you the place we stayed last year. Also, I don't know how much your paying for the hotel but if you keep looking you can come across some pretty good cabin deals.
Have Fun!

Another thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is the great ranger programs in the park. You can go online and print out a copy of the schedule to select the ones you think would be good for your family. (Or just go to the visitors center right inside the park from Gatlinburg) We have done several and my 5 year old loved them. There are three that I think are wonderful. First, there is a short walk to a small waterfall that leaves from the visitor center...easy walk and only takes about 30-40 minutes. The ranger we had was great!
Second, the Ogle cabin tour on the Roaring Fork Nature Trail. Our guide even let our son carry his walky talky (or whatever those things are called!) and kept asking him if he had received his special call yet! At the end we took a picture of him with the ranger and the ranger even let him wear his hat! He was thrilled! It was also a short walk about 40 minutes.
Finally, they have a junior ranger program where you pick up a packet from the visitors center and then search for things like certain leaves and plants. When your complete it you take it back to the rangers at the visitor center and they announce on the loud speaker your childs name and they have just become a junior ranger and present them with a badge. Everyone clapped and cheered! It was the highlight of our son's vacation. We had bought a ranger hat at the gift shop there so the picture and the look on his face is priceless!! Sorry this is so long but we just love Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains! We visit at least twice a year and we live 8 hours away in Illinois! I think you will have wonderful trip!!
I forgot to add all of these programs are free!!!

Can anyone tell me a little more specifically when in the fall it's a good time to go? Here in MI, we probably reach peak color earlier than it would in TN.
When my husband and I married 20 years ago, we selected October 21 as our wedding date because that was the traditional peak in the lower elevations with it being a week or so earlier in the mountains. The last few years, we've noticed a shift to a week or so later.
It's hard to predict and varies from region to region, but in general the last half of October will be the best. Last year there was great color through the first two or three weeks of November down low. I don't ever remember the leaves lasting so late.
If you can plan last minute, there are websites that predict the peaks each year.
October is the peak month for the area, so of course the traffic is also at it's peak. Staying in PF would make it easier to get to Dollywood, or you can always investigate back ways between Gatlinburg and PF. Traffic would definitely be a bear between the two at that time of year.

Hi,
I was recently in Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge with my husband the week after Easter. We stayed at the Park Vista Hotel and it was very nice. We also visited Dixie Stampede and Dollywood and enjoyed both. A majority of the rides at Dollywood are water rides of some sort so you will want to plan accordingly.
I just have one warning for you. My husband and I had four kids back home to buy souvenirs for and so we tried several of the "cheesy" t-shirt shops in Pidgeon Forge. I was SO glad my kids were not with me because the shops all had a great deal of "adult" merchandise and sample shirts with very explicit sayings--all of it was extremely offensive to us. I won't go into any detail because it would be too embarrassing and inappropriate! Just be aware that one of you might want to "scope" out a souvenir shop before you enter with your children.

For people looking for cabin rentals I cannot reccommend highly enough diamond mountain rentals. The website www.diamondrentals.com has pictures of all their cabins and list what the amenities are in each cabin. You can choose a newer built cabin or something more historic. The first time my dh and I went, we chose a cabin with an upstairs loft and a huge jacuzzi upstairs. Downstairs on the porch/overlook was a nice hottub with a fireplace. We sat in the hot tub with some champagne and watched it snow with a fire going. Wild huh? Oh yeah this cabin also had a pool table which was nice because the tv reception wasn't the best. They have deals some but I like that their prices stay the same through out the year because some other places fluctuate according to travel seasons. I enjoyed every stay I have had using this rental company.

We went 8 years ago, for 5 days. My best advice is to bring the PONCHO'S! We went in Aug and it rained everyday. Find a hotel that has an indoor pool..it will be invaluable if the weather is lousy. Also...just a word of caution if renting a cabin or condo or non-chain hotel...we went w/another family, they has 2 condo's booked, canceled one 2 weeks before we left (well within the required cancellation time) they had a print out of the cancellation from on-line and the cancellation #...but they did not have the clerks name. After we returned , 2 weeks later they rec'd a bill for over $800 for staying at the condo they cancelled. They called, explained, were told that they did not cancel, that the clerk personally gave them a key( ummm, they were NEVER there) therefor were responsible for the entire stay...long story short, after a year of fighting this thing and having their CC co. try and intervene..they lost...had to pay the $800 and rec'd a letter stating that just because it's a business in Tennesee, Northerners can't take advantage and try to rip them off! :earseek: I can't state the name of the place, but suffice it to say that once our friends rec'd that letter the BBB was far more interested in the case than before. However, they are still in business, and DH and I have learned thru our friends to stay at reputable chain hotels at least for a first visit somewhere, 'till you can check it out. When they began their claim...they founf out quite a few private rentals across the nation have many claims against them.
On a lighter note, Dollywood is a very beautiful park....so many trees...and the Eagle sanctuary/bird show is pretty cool. Even if it was drizzling when we saw it.

We loved POR. My eldest daughter loved the slide in the main pool as it was fast. The positives of that resort for us was the boatride to DTD, the carriage ride, Piano Bob Jackson in the lounge (I wish we could have seen him more than once!!) and the fact that we could take the boat or walk to PO-FQ and use their pool as well. We requested and received Building 38 in the Alligator Bayou area. It was a little bit of a walk to the food court, etc but the walk was very pleasant with bunnies squirrels, birds, etc. A bus stop and quiet pool were nearby, along with laundry facilities. The mansions were beautiful but I requested Alligator Bayou because there is always a chance that you can get a trundle bed free. We ALL slept alot better with our girls sleeping apart. If you have anymore questions, ask away and I'll try to answer them for you. Have a great time!

The deciding factor for us is always how much time we plan to spend in Gatlinburg. You have to pay to park(approx. $5) in Gatlinburg unless you are parked in your hotel parking lot, but in PF all the parking is free. In Gatlinburg you can walk up and down the strip easily, but not in Pigeon Forge. Picture a strip mall-type layout for Gatlinburg without parking available in front of the stores. My hubby and I go to PF and G'burg frequently and have Dollywood season passes. We love it all...except the traffic, but that's to be expected if you hit a busy season or the weekend. Oh, and I didn't read all the pages, but just in case no one else mentioned it the Comedy Barn is FANTASTIC, HILARIOUS, and FAMILY ORIENTED! PM if you like. We're going down on Thursday night for yet another visit.

We love going to Dollywood... and yes, like many mentioned before, it's NOT Disney. If you constantly compare, it's a huge letdown. But Dollywood has it's own charm and beauty. The setting is gorgeous with spectacular trees all around (which even Disney can't compete with).
This year, with the new rides and attractions, there is even more of a draw to Dollywood.
We'll be at WDW this summer and spending just ONE day at the MK.
What I think is interesting is that ONE day for our family of 4 at the MK costs the same amount as our SEASON PASSES to Dollywood (good through 12/31/05).

Another budget savor I thought of (and I'm sorry if others have already mentioned it) is the trolleys. PF and G'burg each have there own, but one of the routes travels back and forth between the two. It's .50 per person. In fact, there's a place to park for free between the two towns were you park and ride the trolley. I'll keep thinking of any other ideas.

I am a Gatlinburg lover. My husband and I spent our Honeymoon there 29 years ago and go every year. Cades cove is excellent, go either early morning or early evening. The animals are out more at this time. There is a campground there, so if you are thirsty or want a snack, as you come out of the Cove turn to your right and go to the camp store. There is a place called Tuskaleechee Caverns in Townsend, I went there as a child, adult and with my children. It is about a mile walk through and very beautiful. FYI Townsend is where the filmed CHRISTY if you watched the serious and the movie.
The Track has alot of kiddie rides and you can get tickets or a wrist band (I don't know for sure if they still have the bands or not) and the prices is reasonable. Useually you can find discount coupons everywhere for most anything. We always enjoy staying in Gatlinburg as you can keep your car parked and walk all around the town. Daily we get out and do the park site seeing things and then come back and walk though Gatlinburg. Our favorite hotle motel is Johnson's Inn. Dollywood is great too. No its not Disney as many have stated but it is a small park and fun. Dixie Stampede is great fun for all ages and really worth the $, It may seems expensive but you get a preshow, a full family fun show and large dinner. In Cherokee there is the authentic Indian village and I have found that the children enjoy learning real things about American Indians and not the Hollywood version. The museum there is good too. If you are into hiking, maybe at a later age for your children, there is Alum Cave Bluff in the Park going toward Cherokee. It is a medium to hard hike, but if you take snacks (apples etc) and water with you you can take it easy and enjoy. They actually mined Alum powder (used in many medicines etc) here in the past. It is a beautiful climb and so much to see. There are read squirrels in the park called Boomers. The horse back ride at the entrance to the park going toward Cherokee from Gatlinburg is a good one. There is also the Arts and Crafts Community, you will see brown signed posted on the road and you can take a draive through here and see a lot of scenery and many different crafts.
If you like antiques and fleamarkets there are several stores and markets in Sieverville TN going toward Knowville from Pigeon Forge.

Oh! I don't know if this has been mentioned, but we love to eat breakfast at the Burning Bush. They have a yummy breakfast drink and there's a nice little bird/squirrel area right outside the dining room (the wall is just windows) and you can watch the little guys while you eat.
I'm thinking maybe they've changed the name of the Burning Bush, though. Does anyone know?
Oh, and don't be tempted to do Guiness Book of World Records (our family calls it Guiness Book of World Ripoffs). It's a complete waste of money. Ripley's was much much better.

I've been racking my brain trying to think of things to help you have a great trip. Don't bother going to the 50's diner beside of the Comedy Barn. You'd spend $10-12 a person for a burger and shake. Food was good, but not that good. Oh, and there are LOTS of carnival type kiddie rides up and down the strip in PF so be prepared to handle that when your kids see them. There's no way to avoid seeing them.
You can't leave the mountains though without getting an old-timey picture of your family. Nothing says a vacation to PF and G'burg like a picture of a 5 yr old sitting in a saloon with a shotgun on his lap. Or mom dressed like a saloon girl sitting on dad's lap with a shotgun in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other. :rolleyes1 There are a ton of places to have these pics made so you have to at least walk into one and look at the pictures on display. There's even one in Dollywood.
I'll keep thinking. :wave2:

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Clingman's Dome yet. It's in the National Park a short drive from Gatlinburg. If you enjoy hiking it's a beautiful walk and if it's a clear day there is an absolutely unbelievable view from the top. It's very steep, though, so be prepared!!

Pigeon Forge and G'burg are in my backyard! Come on down...we'd love to have you visit the area!
Many great ideas have already been given so I don't know if I can add much more. If you are coming this summer & plan on visiting Dollywood, Kidfest begins June 17 and goes through August 7. There are special shows and activities planned to appeal to children. You can read more about it here -
http://www.dollywood.com/KidsFest.asp
Dollywood also has an area of the park designed just for kids. It's called Imagination Station and can keep kids entertained for a while so parents can sit and take a break.
Traffic is definitely a bear during the summer. Take the trolley when you can or use the backroads as much as possible. If you decide to attend one of the music shows, be sure to allow plenty of time to get through traffic to arrive at the theater or you will miss the start of the show. I highly recommend the Louise Mandrell Show. She always puts on an excellent performance.
This site has a lot of info and if you click on Calendar of Events you can see what's going on in the area in the upcoming months -

Take Hwy. 441 over the mountain into Cherokee, NC and there is a great show called 'Unto These Hills'. It's performed by a cast of Cherokee Indians in an outdoor theater and depicts the trek they were forced to take (known as The Trail of Tears) when banished from their land to Oklahoma. It's a very moving play. It gets cold in the mountains at night so, if you go, take jackets to put on as night descends. We have even taken blankets as well. It's 21 miles over the mountain to Cherokee but they are 'mountain miles' so be prepared for twists, turns, & heights!
As you are coming into the area on Hwy 66, you will see a large building on the right called Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Someone has already mentioned this and there is a lot more to see in there than knives, altho' there are many of them & they are quite interesting. Nearby is a huge store called Home Accents Direct. I love going there and always find really unusual items. There is a camping store inside for the guys to browse and a Black and Decker outlet store is also across the street. Gotta keep the men happy while the ladies shop!
If you come at the right time in June, the mountain laurel and rhododendrons will be blooming and they are beautiful. There are thickets of them all along many of the popular mountain drives.
I just found this thread so I'll think some more & see if I can come up with more ideas.

Just thought of this -
If you will be in G'burg in early July, their Fourth of July parade begins at 12:01 am....yes, it begins right after midnight! It's billed as the first 4th of July parade in the country. It has lighted floats, lots of bands and other marchers. After the parade ends, there is a fireworks show over the Spaceneedle.

Don't miss the new Boyd's Bear outlet if you like teddy bears and/or Boyd's Bears. The place is so huge it's overwhelming!!
I went for the first time last month and will go back every time we get over to Gatlinburg. (We're only about 2-1/2 hours from there so we're lucky to be able to visit a few times a year!)
The outlet has stuffed bears, resin bears, a build-a-bear area, a dining area and more. It's great!

If you like scrapbooking there is a HUGE store in Seveirville, which is just before you get to PF. It's taken me a few trips before I was finally able to actually tell when Sevierville stopped and PF began. Yes, there's a sign, but... The scrapbook store is in a shopping center across from the Super Wal-Mart. It can be overwhelming if you're not an experienced scrapper though. The first time I walked I took half a tour through the store and had to leave. Sensory overload! There have a smaller clearance store right beside the big store though that had great deals and was not overwhelming at all.

Yes, that is a great scrapbooking store! I love going in there but it sure is hard to make a decision on what to get because there is SO much in there. That store is located in Governor's Crossing...just watch for a Mr. Gatti's Pizza and a TGIFriday's...turn at that light.

Ok, I have checked them out..........can you answer a somewhat crazy question for me?? First of all can you tell me the name of the cabin you stayed in and also is it very high up?? I do not like those that have balconies with tall stilts (wrong name??) Ok, i know you think I am nuts...............also how far is it from Gat/PF and is there actually a mountain view..........you mentioned snow.........when was that?? THANKS

Okay, first time we stayed in Bearfoot Ridge and it was just gorgeous. The cabin isn't particularly high up in the mountains but does have the sort of porch/balcony you are asking about. I doubt that you can find many cabins that don't have that sort of stilt thing but it is perfectly safe and you don't have to look at though you aren't very high in the air or at least this cabin wasn't.
Next, we went in March when we sat in the hot tub and watched it snow. I reccomend that if you go during winter season and stay in a cabin that you have a 4x4 or all wheel drive or something that you know can get through the snow and up the mountain just because it can really come down there sometimes.
Third, this cabin was actually pretty close to Gatlinburg. We would park on the corner of the second stop light and just walk around Gatlinburg. From there we would drive our car over to Pigeon Forge, which takes about 10 mins I guess and is a nice drive.
Are you looking for a cabin that is surrounded by the mountains or are you looking for something not very high up in the mountains? I would suggest that you pick up a couple that you are interested in and call about them. I can say that some of the cabins you can end up out in the back forty which happended to us one time and I wouldn't reccommend it if you are planning to spend a lot of time in the towns.Anytime you have more questions please feel free to ask or PM me. I'm sorry it took so long to reply I was out all day yesterday.

I've read some, has the wagon/hay ride at Cades Cove been mentioned? There are often mountain music concerts given in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and they are excellent. There's an area of the park that has tubing streams, maybe it's called the Deep Creek section of the park.
We're season ticket holders at Dollywood and have tickets for her benefit concert in September.

I was excited to hear that they added more rides to the country fair area this year that area need more... Has any one been, what are the rides?
I went to Dollywood on Friday. They've still got the bumper cars, scrambler and Swing-a-ma-jig. All the other stuff is gone including the logride:(. They've added a lot of Disney-inspired rides such as an elephant ride that looks just like Dumbo, a tea cup ride that goes around a lemonade pitcher, and a drop ride. The drop ride is external and not very high so it could be a good warm-up for TOT. There's also a little rollar coaster, but it's not quite finished yet. There are a couple or three kiddie rides that I didn't pay much attention too since we are kiddie-less, but I'm sure the four years olds would love them. There's an astro-orbiter type ride too. And finally, there's a ride that is very hard to describe, but I'll try. A group of ~20 sit in a circle facing outward and the disk that they're sitting on goes around in circles while gliding back and forth on a skateboard ramp shaped track. It looked fun and is on my to-do list.
The show that used to be performed during the railroad ride has been discontinued. It's still a pleasurable ride through the mountain and a great place to take the kids if they need a brief nap.

It amazes me how many Tennesseans are on here. :cool1:
I just have to second the Old Mill and Apple Barn.
The Disney outlet is in the same large shopping center that the Rockport and Reebok outlets are. Definitely stop by those for cheap shoes. There's also a pyrex cooking store there. It's neat to go in.
You might want to check out Forbidden Caverns, they're about 45 minutes away. We also try to NEVER drive through Pigeon Forge on the weekend. If you can at all help it, arrive on Monday and leave on Friday. Avoid rush hour traffic too.
Cades Cove is a nice place, but if you're going at a busy time of year, I'd avoid that too. They don't want you getting out of your cars, so sometimes it ends up being a traffic jam and you really can't leave the cove easily without doing the whole thing. The Ripley's aquarium is nice.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but the Comedy Barn in PF is just a hoot. Don't miss it, great family entertainment. Cannot believe that someone left Dollywood because they did not like it! Not Disney but just a beautiful place to be. Love their shows. Leaving the Tennessee Mountains for Disney in 11 days :rotfl:

Hi to all my fellow Tennesseans that have posted here! :wave2:
Just a heads up if anyone enjoys & had plans to go to a Louise Mandrell show at some point. I've read she has sold her theater & is returning to Nashville to spend more time with her husband. He's been diagnosed with a rare neurological disease. I believe the name of it is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy which causes extreme pain over the entire body. He has recently returned from Germany where he underwent a special type treatment & he is now pain free but they don't know if it will last. Her last show will be New Year's Eve. I think she puts on a great show & I will really miss it but I certainly understand her decision. I didn't mean to highjack this thread but thought some of you might like to know about this.

Thank you Daisy'sMom for the information on the County Fair in Dollywood. My family loves this area the best and we had always wished for more rides in this area. Thanks. So sorry to hear that the log ride is gone! WOW! Why? We are planning on going the First of June to PF, we like Dollywood, it usually is a very relaxing trip.
Thanks!

2- If #1 not available stop by a local convenience store & check out the Coke cans. Sounds crazy I know, but last time we went to PF, we were on our way home & we stopped for a Coke and guess what was on our cans?!? We could have saved $30. :sad2: Worth a look anyway!
Our coke cans (here in East TN) right now do have the coupon for saving $5 off of a regualr admission from now til the end of June.

Oh, it's been about 3 years, but when we went there was a Disney Outlet store in Pigeon Forge. Does anyone know if it is still there?

We stayed in a Cabin through Cabinfevervacations.com our cabin was literally right up the road from the parks. We did two days in each park, Dollywood and her waterpark. We went last week in August and there was NO lines, we literally walked right on rides and sometimes they let us go around a couple times without getting off. I hadn't been there since a little girl and it was fun to share it with my kids. My kids LOVED it and have asked to go again. When at our cabin it was so relaxing we either swam or played some pool, it was just so relaxing and then at night we drove into town we loved Gatlinburg much better than Pigeon Forge, it's changed so much over the years they used to have it where you could walk up and down the streets and hear music and shop now it's all built up. We did however go to the Dixie Stampede and I have never seen my kids (7,4, 2) sit down for a meal, they were actually glued to their seats! it was alot of fun! We also did the Ripley Aquarium which was really cool and definitely take a ride through the Smokies make sure to stop at the top there is some nice history to learn about there and a hike you can take, good place to also take pictures. Take a ride through Cades Cove you will love the animal life. Enjoy your time it's very relaxing!
Forgot to add we also took the kids up in a helicopter for their first time and let my 4 yr old sit up front cause he loves helicopters they thought it was the BEST! (Just another idea)

We are going this year as well, over July 4th for a week. Our family alternates this with WDW every year and love both for different reasons. Any of you been to Debbie Reynolds' new Hollywood Museum? It's been built since we were there 2 years ago and I am really an old movie buff--can't wait to see what she has; I've heard her collection is really magnificent. :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsgirl:
