View Full Version : Can I combine DIS-Con with extended family trip?

It has occurred to me in the last day or so that perhaps I'm being selfish by being the only one in my immediate family of 5 to do the convention events. (We just couldn't justify spending $1100+ for all of us to eat, eat, eat!) Now my inlaws and sister-in-law's family of 4 will be joining us, too - and they are looking to ME to guide them throughout WDW! I'm SERIOUSLY thinking of dropping the events package for myself (already booked the hotel separately) so I can play the role of full-time tour guide. By the way, I added 2 SOLO days to the end of my trip for enjoying MVMCP and the Candlelight Processional. What do you all think?

I know there will be some events that will not be DIS CON events like the 12-3 CP and MVMCP and the one on 11-29. Sure you'll miss out on some things, but would you be ble to enjoy all the events that you paid for if the entire rest of your group is looking to you for guidence on where to go and what to do and where to eat and so on?

I'm not trying to get rid of ya girl, but I believe there will still be things that you can do with groups of us.

Any other thoughts?

Oh Nancy! What a pickle you're in! ((not literally, I hope. ;) ))

I'm not sure what I would do....I'm leaning towards you dropping the events-only and just joining us for the non-convention events.....mostly because you wouldn't have to worry about time restraints when you're entertaining and guiding your family around the parks. ALSO, your family and extended family would be MORE THAN WELCOME to join any and all of the other mini meets!!! :)

Good Luck deciding! :) ~*~pixie dust~*~ to you. :)

Having played tour guide for one other person the last few times I've been to WDW, I can tell you that it is a full-time job. I can't imagine having a whole family look to me for WDW guidance. My advice would be: family always comes first. I'm sure that you could squeeze in a few mini-meets, as well as the MVMCP and CP toward the end of your trip. But with a group that size, I think you'd be hard pressed to schedule any of the regular convention meets. Just my humble opinion, but I'd hate to see you run yourself ragged.

Okay, I guess that being tour guide seems like the thing to do and I agree that
is VERY time consuming :sob::sob::.
Just promise us that you'll be at some of the mini meets. We can never have too
many Illinoisians.

So far 4 of you say to drop the events package, and 1 person sent me a PM to keep it!

I'm thinking of doing an Illuminations cruise when we first arrive - thus eliminating the need for me to see it from the special viewing area. I plan to go to MGM on the 26th - our first day - so I hope we will see Fantasmic...even without the dessert.

I promised SSB that I'd do the DATW II on the 30th, and I'd love to do the karaoke thing afterwards - so maybe Friday evening can be my night off!

Well Nancy...I think you have your answer. :)

Drop the events and join us for MVMCP and Crystal Palace on the 2nd....might want to book your own PS for your whole group! :bounce:

And let Friday night be YOUR NIGHT and join SSB. :)

After thinking that I'd cancel the events package for myself, I heard from a DIS friend (who will be at DIS-CON) who said that after spending all day with 10 relatives, I'd NEED to get away in the evening! I plan to be with the family the first 3 days before any DIS-Con events start, and we will hit all 4 parks. The 4th day (Thurs. 11/29) will probably be an IOA day for my DH and kids, and a non-park day for my SIL's family with little kids, so the family won't miss me. (I've never been to IOA - so I wouldn't be much of a guide if I DID go!) That's also the busiest DIS-Con day, with character breakfast in the a.m. and dessert party/Fantasmic/ToT in the evening. There aren't any official DIS-Con events for me Friday, so I'd spend the day with the family again. In the evening - I will do the DATW/karaoke - which I planned to do whether or not I had the events pkg. Finally, I'll spend Saturday with the family, and they should be able to fend for themelves by the time evening rolls around.

All I can say for sure is that I will probably sit on this until the balance is due in October! I appreciate all your input.

Nancy, I was wondering if there was a way to incorporate the 2, so you wouldn't have to cancel the events package. From the sounds of it, you are on your way to doing just that. I agree, after a day with 10 people, you're going to need some down/just me time. I'm glad you're thinking this way, we'd miss you if you weren't around. Good luck! :D
