We're sailing as well! We're celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary and 10 yr. "together" anniversay (ok, technically they're in the spring, but no one needs to know that ;) )

We don't have kids, so this is strictly a "romancing and relaxing" cruise before work and college gets crazy again. Vacation makes us very lazy, sleepy people. Look for us to be snoozing in a deck chair :earboy2:

Last time I cruised, we shared the boat with a real celebrity ::yes::

The disboards own...........

Verandah Man and his lovely wife Hazel

I really enjoyed having Andy and Hazel on board with me. They are both very special people.

Andy is such a nice man, so friendly.

I was very glad that I got the chance to meet him and Hazel.

I loved "running" into him around the ship.

It seemed that everywhere I went, he was there too.

I'm off the list...had to cancel, waaaaaa!!!!! waaaaaaaa!!!

Business has not been so good this year, couple of people owing us have declared bankruptcy, which means we can kiss that money goodbye, along with the cruise.

Yes, things could be worse than not being able to go on a disney cruise, but it's still sad

You all will just have to have an extra special time for me!!!

Well, DCL website will no longer allow 1/8/06 bookings for cat 10-12, so that must mean we're starting to get booked up! Though I would by lying if I didn't say I secretly hoped that it doesn't get too booked ;). That's one more deck chair available to me :smooth:.

Has anyone else taken advantage of the end of summer clothes clearance...since trying to find beach wear in January might be a little difficult? :cold:

Yikes...I'm getting a little worried! Just kidding...that is interesting that those categories seem to be full!! I know what you mean about the empty deck char...LOL!

Yes, I've been doing the same, trying to find summer clothes on clearance as I'm worried that I won't be able to find what I need at the end of Dec/ beginning of Jan!!

Cruisin
08-08-2005, 05:27 PM
I have been keeping an eye out on the DCL site too and had noticed that there were not so many cabin categories left.

We have booked a GTY Cat 12, which we have never done before. I am hoping for an upgrade but if it doesn't happen then it really doesn't matter to us, since we are in the cabin very little except to sleep and shower and dress.

I have lost some weight in the last months and I have bought a new bathing suit this summer because I know there won't be many around here once the colder weather starts, heck you probably be hard pressed to find any now.

I am so looking forward to this cruise :goodvibes

branv
08-08-2005, 08:29 PM
Well here's my theory: this was one great price they had for the cat 12's. A little while back, they actually closed out cat 12's as available, and then went and added them as "available" again a few days later. My guess is that demand was so high for cat 12, and so low for the other cats (being early January, and most people no longer on vacation) that they accepted a ton of people in cat 12. Ergo, a whole bunch of people had to be upgraded into cat 10 & 11 (since there's only thirteen cat 12 rooms?)

Now how great would it be to be upgraded :cheer2: I don't hold out alot of hope since it's just DH and I, and the families will probably be upgraded first. But it would be nice :)

Rant about clothing: What kills me is that here, you can wear capris and shorts almost year round...yes, one week or two, you might have COLD temps, but then it's up to highs in the 70's, and who wants to wear a sweater? You can for sure swim here through September, but bathing suits go on clearance in July. Sure seems like those doofus retailers would recognize all regions are not created equally

Cruisin
08-08-2005, 08:59 PM
I remember the point where the Cat 12's were there and then gone again and then returned. At the point that they were gone we booked the 3 day cruise previous to this 4 day cruise.

About 2 days after I booked the 3 day cruise, Cat 12's reappeared in the 4 day cruise so we switched over to the 4 day cruise at that time.

I live in Canada so we definitely do not get to wear shorts all year long. So if you think you are needing summer clothes in the mid winter then you better buy them in June or July. ;)

I live about one hour across the border from Detroit, Michigan. Our summers here are long and hot, especially this year. We also get extreme cold weather.

Here's hoping we all get the upgrade pixie dust princess:

So, I actually have a Canadian winter story :)

DH and I were going to go to Banff during the winter. We were living in Houston, TX at the time, and went to a store to buy ski coats in November. We're trying on these HUUUUGE jackets in the store, and we're absolutely sweating to death. Besides the fact that these gigantic things make us look like weeble wobbles with legs, both of us were thinking that we'd probably never wear these jackets b/c we'd end up a puddle.

In fact, when we got on the airplane to travel to Alberta, it was about 60 degrees in Houston.

Flash forward to Banff at negative blankity blank degrees. We're huddled together for warmth whenever we're outside, wondering how these gigantic puffy coats suddenly feel like tiny little layers of nothing. :rotfl: What amazed me the most is how the wind would just go wooooosh right underneath the bottom of the jacket. WOO, brrrrrrrrrrrr... :cold:

It was still an incredible trip, in fact we've gone back and forth at times about going back there or taking this trip. Talk about polar opposites for January though ;) (pun intended) I'm sure you will really be looking forward to taking off those coats!

Vacation planning and the anticipation of a trip is so much fun for me.....I love to plan. The only thing better than the planning is shopping for your vacation. :cheer2: With the summer sales going on in full force there is a lot of great stuff for next to nothing. And it's always a good thing when you find another swim suit that fits and is on sale. I do want to get a new formal dress so that's my next quest. Ladies, how is the shopping going for you?

branv
08-09-2005, 09:48 PM
I've already purchased my over the door hanger, panchos...now just keeping an eye out for a deal on underwater disposable cameras. As for clothes, well I'm a errrr..what's a nice way to say it...well, "rounder" in areas then your average person. Ergo, I don't get to take advantage of all the stores deals, but I had a Lane Bryant sale coupon AND they were having a huge summer sale. I ended up with my first pair of shorts in at least 5 years. Bless bermuda shorts for coming back in...now I wish I'd purchased more, b/c these puppies may not make it to January if I keep wearing them. I also bought a thinner long sleeved shirt. Very happy to find that, I can never find any clothes for "Slightly cool" weather, y'know? Since we'll be in the parks for a few days before the cruise, it will come in handy. That and my jean jacket. I also bought a bathing suit for about half off - woo-hoo! (probably the first time in years I've used "bathing suit" and "woohoo" in the same sentence).

Sales are so evil sometimes ;) You know how it is when you really shouldn't be buying anything, but you justify it by it being such a good deal (i.e. "honey, guess what I did today?? I saved us $70!!")

Speaking of budgets, I did a spreadsheet to try and flesh out what we could expect for costs. I almost had a heart attack :rotfl: It's amazing how a "good deal" on a cruise can still end up making you plotz when you consider the final bill. :teeth: After I did that, I curbed the vacation clothing shopping.

So who is getting dressy dressy? I'm not bringing a formal dress, just a knee length black dress & strappy heels, and of course 50 lbs. of capris.

Since we're girls so far: anyone else contemplating a leg wax before they go? I've done it before, and it was about as fun as a root canal. But I can't imagine trying to prop a leg up in that bathroom :rolleyes1 I'm guessing a week before will be a safe amount of time to do it before getting into salt water?

VickiHD
08-10-2005, 01:22 AM
Branv.....you are so right about a "good deal" turns into much much more. In our case we thought a 4 night cruise would be a quick little get away. Well, we are flying in from the west coast two days prior to the cruise, and staying another day after. So this 4 night cruise has turned into a 7 day vacation with a pre cruise day spent at Epcot and after the cruise visiting the Space Center.
I am always watching out for deals on the underwater camera and the prices are pretty consistent. I just start picking one up here and there and the other stuff we need for vacations and keep it all together. By the time the trip rolls around I've gotten a nice supply and my list is complete.
One thing I am going to really, really try not to do is over pack. I am getting much better but still my husband turns into a pack mule. All those bags are a pain to deal with and I guess Disney only allows two check in bags per person. On the other cruise lines we've traveled with we did not have limits.
So I really am going to try and not pack a lot. But I am concerned with the weather temp. in Jan. So I like your ideal about the capris. I've got a closets full.
Congratulations on the swim suit!!!!! I plan on getting a new formal dress. Is there a official formal night on the 4 night cruise. I have "cocktail" dresses that would work, but I am looking forward to really dressing up.
Regarding the leg wax....I'll pass. I've have had a couple of Root Canals and I'll stick with my shaver.

Hi!

I've been away to Toronto to Paramount Canada's Wonderland, which is a large amusement park.

First about the cold winters branv, you get used to the cold. I wear a thin coat (thinsulate material) thin but warm. I hardly ever do my coat up at all in the winter and I never wear a hat and rarely do I wear gloves. It's all in what you get used to.

That being said I much prefer the 90 - 100º temperatures we have been consistently having this summer ::yes::

About clothes, I had to buy a whole new wardrobe of shorts and tshirts (summer wear) this summer because I lost 30 pounds over the winter  , none of my old stuff fits anymore :sad2: :teeth:

We are leaving home on the 4th if we drive (19 hours of drive time, one overnight stay) or the 5th if we decide to fly. We are staying at the POP Century for 3 nights and doing the parks probably for 2 days before we go on the cruise. After the cruise we will be heading right home.

We tend to pack very light. One small roll-on bag per person and another smaller carryon is usually our limit. If we drive then it doesn't really matter so much.

I don't believe there is an actual formal night on the 4 night cruise. We usually use the night that we eat at Triton's to be our dressier night.

We have cruised many times in January and you never know what the weather will be like. Last year at the same time it was absolutely gorgeous, warm and sunny the whole time. :sunny:

I'm soooo looking forward to this cruise. I can't wait :bounce:

Congrats on the weight loss. I'm going back to school this year, on a campus that's all hills and stairs...hoping that will work off an inch or two (though that may all be for naught as I could end up drowning my sorrows in Starbucks cafe mochas after having to sit down everyday next to a 19 year olds with 6" thighs. ;) Though I'm pretty sure they won't sit next to me anymore after I poke at their flat stomach and with an evil cackle say "Just think, I used to look just like you when I was 19 aaaaaaaaaaaHAHAHAHAHA"
:rotfl:

This is the trouble with January, I fear I may just have to overpack. Given that one day might be warm...and the next cool. The days might be hot, but the nights chilly. I don't know how I can avoid a plethora of packing. I've learned from experience that weather forecasts are seldom even remotely accurate. I guess this is where learning to "layer" comes in.

I do way too much "what if" packing. What if I feel like dressing up, what if I feel hot and want to wear something cooler, what if I win the lottery on vacation, and need to be interviewed on camara ;) So I pack for all possible occurences and then end up wearing 1/2 of it.

Vicki - That's funny what you said about your husband packing the most. I've actually gotten a little better about my packing, but DH has gotten worse! My DH is not a clothes fanatic, but he's a clean clothes fanatic. I can wear the same pair of jeans twice as long as I have an iron, and he'll do it...but he doesn't like it. We have to take extras of everything. For a man who can live in tshirts, shorts and tennis shoes, it boggles my mind that he can be so finicky. Though to be fair, my shoes alone can take up a load of suitcase room, but at least they're light weight ;)

Hi ....

Crusin....you're right, there is a "dress up " night not a formal night. Now I even more confused. What does dress up mean??? This is our first Disney Cruise so I'm not familiar with the routine. Does dress up mean "semi" formal???? Well, I'm still going to find a new dress to wear. :)

Branv....That is exciting to be going back to school.

I'm enjoying and spending a lot of time reading cruise trip reports and I really getting excited.

Cruisin
08-11-2005, 12:59 AM
I think that you should wear what you are comfortable with.

If you want to dress up in formal attire, then do it. It's your vacation.

There will be people in all different styles of dress, so you won't have to worry about being out of place.

I'm one of those who doesn't really pay that much attention to what other people are wearing. What they wear or do not wear doesn't offend me in the least little bit :p

Hey...just wanted to add my part here.
There are some good sales going on here as well, and I was quite surprised to see that there were some swimsuits left...that's pretty unusual here.
On our last cruise, which was our first, I overpacked a little. I ended up not wearing several of the things that I packed, so I'm going to try and do a little better this time. One of the hardest things to pack is shoes. But this time, I've been able to narrow it down. I have 2 outfits that I can wear with one pair of shoes, and then 2 more that I can wear with another. So then all I'll need is my daytime shoes, which will probably be my Keds flip-flops.
I have a nice black dress that I'm taking also, which is what I plan on wearing to Palo. I figured I could get dressed up for that and be okay. Is anyone else planning on doing Palo?
I am really excited about this trip too, and I hope that I get to meet some of you!!

Cruisin
08-11-2005, 09:39 AM
We have no plans to do Palo.

It is our 7th cruise with Disney and we have yet to go to Palo.

We are going with my parents and it is there first time, so we don't want to take them away from the dining room. They should experience all of the meals there, we thought.

If we want to meet each other we can plan a small DISmeet at some point. We did that on my last cruise and it was nice to meet some of my fellow DISers. Then when you pass them later on during the cruise, you can stop and chat for a few minutes.

On my last cruise I met the DISboard famous Andy~~ Verandah Man and his lovely wife Hazel. Very, very nice people. ::yes::

VickiHD
08-11-2005, 08:20 PM
We are thinking about having dinner at Palo one night. I just wish we could find out prior to sailing what are dining rotations where and then make our reservation accordingly.

We should definately have a "cruise meet". It will be fun. We have done this before (on a different cruise line) and it was great. We actually have stayed in close touch with another couple and have become good friends over the years.

I have been reading trip reports etc about DIS board cruise meets and even how people decorate their cabin doors. I'm going to work on a door sign....thank goodness for the hints and ideas from other cruiser.

UGAFan0829
08-11-2005, 09:03 PM
Cruisin-I don't blame you for not wanting to take away from your parents experience in the restaurants. It has to be really cool to be able to cruise with them. I hope that you all have a wonderful time.
As for a meet, I definitely think that we should set something up. I was rather new here on my last cruise, so I didn't get to meet anyone then, but would love to this time! :wave2:

I hope we have fun too UGAfan.

My dad is not too sure about going on a cruise ship but my mom said she was going on a cruise before she dies and he could either come along or stay home :confused3

I guess he picked the wiser choice :teeth:

A DIS meet sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should wait until closer to leaving time to decide on a when or where schedule.

08-12-2005, 12:02 AM
Hi everyone,

DH and I are in for the Dismeet. :cheer2: I second Crusin idea of waiting a little before we schedule.

Who's doing a door sign??????

Found a cute pair of capris for the cruise. Yeah, they were on sale so I could resist the top and flip flops to match. Ladies...you understand right. :)

Cruisin
08-12-2005, 12:08 AM
I have never done a door sign before, but I think that I might get something done up for my parent's door.

We are taking the cruise to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

My brother is in the sign/screen printing business. I'm sure I can talk him into designing something for us. :teeth:

VickiHD
08-12-2005, 01:04 AM
Wow, 50 years! Thats wonderful. You could really have a lot of fun decorating their door. There's such a selection of decorations etc, and having a brother with sign printing experience could be very helpful.

I don't think that we will be signing up for any excursions.

We will probably go to Atlantis in Nassau but will get there ourselves by taxi rather than take a formal excursion. We usually stay on the ship but since it will be my parents first time in the Bahamas, I think it is important for them to get off the ship and have a look around. Even if we just walk on the main shopping street. That in itself is an experience

I usually just hang out at the adult beach on Castaway Cay and my husband stays on the ship since he is not a beach person. He will usually get off and meet me on the island for lunch then we go back our separate ways :teeth:

We're thinking about either the Catamaran or the Caribbean Queen Snorkel in Nassau. But it seems like no one ever does these judging by how few responses anyone gets when they ask about them. Wish I could get some reviews! The only thing that concerns me about snorkeling and not going to the beach in Nassau is the always existing possibility that the ship not be able to dock in Castaway Cay. I would just hate not getting some beach time.

We don't plan on doing anything at the Cay but renting some floats.

Since the Catamaran meets at 9 am, we figure if we do that one we can snorkel in the a.m., reboard for lunch and shower, then head to Atlantis for some gambling. This is assuming we don't crash after the snorkel, and be forced to take extensive nap (speaking from experience, for some reason whenever we vacation it's like we're drugged by midafternoon. Naps are just a normal part of any trip :teeth: )

Ooooh, bought some more clothes for the trip from the superfabulous Old Navy outlet near us. I so shouldn't do this, but it was such an amazing deal. Bad girl!

We also went to the Coleman outlet and bought a multipack (3 diff. sizes) of the water wallets for only $3.50.

I am planning on making a door sign for us...made one for our last trip, so I guess I better do it again and keep with tradition...LOL!!

As for our excursions, I think we are gonna do the Discover Atlantis for Nassau. Last time we did the Dolphin Encounter and loved it, but this year we want to check out Atlantis and see what it's all about! And for CC, I haven't made up my mind yet. We had the Glass Bottom Boat booked for last time, but it got cancelled because of the seas. We may end up trying that again, or if they have the Stringray excursion open yet, we may try that!!

DH snorkels but I don't, I'm chicken. (I am happy working on my tan with a tropical drink in one hand and a book in the other) So on Nassau we will probably take the Nassau Historical City tour. The city tour ends of at the straw market...so that's a plus for me. I just think of the ports of call a opportunity to shop. :cheer2: I've never been to Nassua, and I'm not expecting a lot from what I've read, but for safety reasons DH wants us to stick together when we're in port. How can you find out the times that the tours are offered????

Then when we visit Castaway Kays he can snorkel, snorkel, and snorkel. The waverunner tour is something I would do....tell me more please.

I have started gathering a few items for our door sign. I've found some cute cruise stickers and scrapbook paper at Office Max.

I'm going "window" shopping again tomorrow. Hopefully. it will be a success.

We are going to be down to just my husband, myself and my parents cruising in January.

Our daughter just signed up for college and won't be able to take the time off to cruise with us.

Too bad for us and I will miss her but I'm glad she has found something she wants to do with her life.

She DOES love to cruise though ::yes::

Congrats to her! (And to you :) ) It's so rewarding.

Holy cow, they must be making her go back early! We don't go back until after MLK day. We had to book our cruise specifically for that time of year so that DH and I, the old "return to college and finish what you started" kiddos, wouldn't miss school. So 32 isn't old, but in comparison... :)

Speaking of, when I purchased by textbooks for the upcoming semester, they placed a coupon in my bag for a pizza place across the street from campus. When DH and I went to restaurant, we were having a nice conversation with the young college student behind the counter. When we handed him the coupon, he said "oh another one of these! So, does your child go here?"

:faint:

I just groaned and hung my head. He SO came this close to losing his tip ;)

Of course anybody over the age of 25 looks old to them. :teeth:

Here traditionally the schools start back the Monday after New Years Day, so this year that is January 2. The other schools usually would do that too (elementary and highschools) but they have adjusted the calendar this year so that they get out a week later before Christmas and don't go back to school until January 9. The college did not follow suit so they are still going back as usal.

When I booked it I didn't even think she would be going to college, so things do change sometimes. So the end result is no cruise for her. She gets to stay home with her brother, who is also a college student ;)

When I cancelled her off the reservations, I asked to be put on the wait list for early dinner seating. Probably it won't happen but it is worth a try.

So how many of us are going to the parks the days before or after?

We're going the few days before b/c we have left over Parkhopper Passes. Everyone keeps saying that the Marathon isn't that much of an impact, but this is the first year they're seperating the races which doubles the number of runners from the years past. Ergo, we really have no accurate historical data to project how crowded it will truly be from the marathon with this increase. Just really hoping we're still looking at super low crowds :) How else am I supposed to see 4 parks in 2 days ;)

DH is really ambivalent about going to the parks, but I'm jonesing for a strawberry swirl.

I can't think of a better way to heal those swollen park feet than a little Bahama breeze (the wind, not the drink...ok, maybe one of the drinks.)

I noticed that the 3 day cruise before us is barely booked...still offering most cats. Do you think that means they'll need less time to let us on board and in our rooms ;) We plan to get to the dock nice and early..can't help it, I'd rather sit at the port then sit in my hotel room *cough* Impatient? Who me?

UGAFan0829
08-23-2005, 12:14 PM
Ha! I can't imagine what you might possibly mean about being impatient!!! I hope that we are able to get to port early as well.
The cruise is just that for us...not parks after or before. Actually, I hope to be able to go down sometime and just do the parks by themself. The DH has never been to any of them, and I've only been to Epcot and MGM, and that was only because I went there with my school years ago to perform there!!

DH and I are flying in technically two days before we sail. One day is spent JUST flying from California to FL. It is a really long day and with only 1 plane change. So we will finally, and hopefully, get in Orlando appt. 7 pm. We'll pick up the car and then off to WDW. We just spent a week there in June, and with the various trips to Disneyland this year and a upcoming one at Christmas time, we will just spend 1 day at Epcot and will try to check out the Boardwalk area and DTD.

Our plan is to get to the port very early. I've talked to a couple of people at WDW regarding the traffic impact and potential problems regarding the marathon and us wanting to leave early for the port and it "sounds" like it should not be a issue. But I know I will not relax untill we're on the ship. :cool1:

Post cruise we will check out the Kennedy Space Center and spend another night before flying home to California.

I do wonder what catagories are left. I really hope we all get fantastic upgrades.

branv
08-23-2005, 04:28 PM
Can you believe it, just cat 4-7 left. I can't believe this many people can plan so far in advance for stuff, it just about killed me to commit to one thing so far out, but glad I did. This is the earliest I've ever planned a vacation...meaning the longest I've ever had to deal with anticipation this long :bored:

I don't hold my breath that DH and I will be upgraded, since it's just the 2 of us. But it would be a nice surprise :)

Are you guys planning on seeing the shows? I'm not sure if we'll go or not...I like the traditional musical theater, but don't know if this will appeal or not.

What does everyone use to battle motion sickness? The biggest boat I was ever on was a cruiser in channel off the Gulf...it was fairly choppy and gas fumes were coming up over the back. I was NOT a happy camper. I've always been fine on boats on the lake, but I have to admit the cruise makes me nervous. Bonine is my plan so far, any reports?

So who is the planner in the family? DH knows I'm Queen Anal Planner extraordinare, so he just turns it over to me. I decided to create a web page so we could store all our vacation photos/travel memories, but found myself putting up our Disney travel plans just so DH could have a place to go and see what we're doing when he's bored He may...or may not..get around to looking at it. That boy is way too zen on the vacay front. :rotfl:

We plan on leaving home on January 4, undecided yet as to whether we are driving or flying. If driving we will arrive at the POP Century late afternoon on January 5 and stay there until it is time to drive to the port. If flying we will be at the POP Century at day early (providing of course that I can extend our rooms by one night).

We will be doing the parks from Janury5/6 until the day of the cruise. We have done 4 parks in one day before quite a few times :teeth: We pick out our absolute must sees and then go from park to park until we have seen what we want. It can be done, especially in January.

Having my parents along will slow us down but that is okay. A slower pace sounds good.... stop and enjoy the surroundings instead of just running through.

I/We plan on seeing all of the shows on board. I would recommend that you DO go and see them. They are excellent. In our opinion anyways ;)

As to motion sickness....We have found it not to be too bad. My husband has a real problem with motion sickness (can't ride simulator rides or roller coasters etc) He has not had any problems on cruise ships.

There are some tips if you feel bad. Go out on deck where you can see the horizon and feel the air blowing on you ~~ it really does help. Don't go into your cabin or other small enclosed spaces.

The first night is usually the worst because you have to cross the Gulf Stream. After that it usually calms down quite a bit.

VickiHD

We are planning to see the shows and do as much as possible, while relaxing of course :rotfl2:

We really had some rough seas on a New Years Eve cruise, on the Star Princess a couple years back. It was a Mexican Rivera cruise and it was tough going and coming back. A lot of people were ill and it did bother us a bit, even though we generally do not have a problem with motion sickness. We bought those wrist bracelets for acupressure points, but I have no idea if they actually work. We will find out on this trip.

As far as planning, I am the Official Travel/Agent/Planner of our household. I like to have a couple of trips in the works so there is always another one or two in the future to look forward to. So I plant the seed....DH comes up with a idea for location and then I get to run with it. (It was his idea that the winter cruise we take would be a Disney Cruise). I was looking at other lines. I love finding out everything I can about our vacation and filling up my folders or binders with that helpful information. To me planning and the anticipation of a trip is almost as much fun as the actual vacation.

I totally know what you mean. :teeth:

I just got the Disney Visa solely for the $50 Disney Dollar sign-up deal. I had already booked and paid my deposit, so I figured I wouldn't be able to book my cruise on the Visa for an additional $50 OBC. Some wonderful Dis cruisers had a post about working around this. All I had to do was transfer my cruise to the Disney Visa, they would credit back to me whatever I'd already paid, and I would receive the extra $50 OBC. Really just shuffling stuff around, easy as pie, and very nice extra spending money.

As a result of doing this, they sent me a new confirmation letter.

So...you see how sad this is? I was just getting the same letter I'd already received once...and I was still excited.

"Ohhh! :Pinkbounc Disney mail!!!"

Did anyone check out those discounted cabins Dreams Unlimited were offering for our cruise? Very tempting...veeeery tempting. I had to remind myself that any money I spent upgrading came out of my overall "extra fun" budget...and that every cabin has the same bed, so we shouldn't go crazy about upgrades. That for the same price for a window I could get a couple of spa services, 2 really cool excursions and lots of fruity drinks.

But it was still a struggle ;)

DH and I already decided that if they upgrade us for free to a window, we'll ask at the port how much extra a balcony is...but we'll try to restrain ourselves :rotfl:

No actually, this time it came with a little letter saying "Welcome Aboard Agaain", and then at the bottom it has 3 dates listed: Our sail date, the date that final pymt is due, and the date that we can start making all our ressies.
It also had this little booklet inside that is to help plan. It lists the shore excursions for Nassau and CC, and has a bunch of other info inside.
Just thought it was cool to have gotten something new!

Just wondering...is anyone else thinking of rebooking while onboard?? I am jonesing to do a 7-night, so I hope that we are able to rebook!!

Cruisin

That sounds like an interesting mailing.

I have never gotten anything like that when I've gone on a Disney Cruise.

All of my past cruises have been booked through a travel agent. This one I did myself on-line, so maybe that makes a difference.

I hope they will send out one of those mailing to us too. I just love to get Disney Mail.

I got a confirmation letter in the mail for the POP Century too and I think that is a first for that also.

I don't know if we will be booking on board. We have never done that before.

Do you research the prices of the cruise BEFORE you get onboard so that you know if the price is a good one?

I didn't get one of the mailings for our last cruise either, and I booked directly with DCL then too!

Yes, it is always exiting to get Disney mail!!

If we dook rebook while onboard it will be a first for us. I know a lot of people who do rebook usually end up transferring the ressie to a TA so that they can save more money. The main reason that I would want to book onboard is so that we could take advantage of any special offers that they might have. Last time they were offering a $200 stateroom credit for a 7-night.

And of course myself and the DH!

Jusrt doesn't seem like very many people for the ship to be so sold out already. Either people are hiding from us, or all the rest of the people on the ship aren't Dis'ers.

Another thought I had was this--maybe a lot of travel agencies are atill holding onto rooms, so they actually show booked on DCL, but not through the TA. Was just wondering if maybe the reason that DU was having such a great sale was because they weren't selling that fast...just a thought...

Cruisin
08-30-2005, 10:27 AM
I think that it could be true about the rooms being held by the travel agents and showing booked by Disney Cruise Lines.

This cruise/trip just happened so quickly. There was really no advanced yearning/planning about how someday we'd like to take a Disney cruise. I just happened to look one day at cruises, and found a good price for DCL. We can sail out of Galveston and it would only take 4 hours to drive there, but DCL quality seems to just be miles above the ships that sail out of Texas.

So I've sort of been in a crescendo state...the more and more I read and learn about DCL, the more excited I get. Really, I'm just excited to be going somewhere! Between both of us in school and DH working overtime, we're lucky if we spend a quality hour a day together when school is in session. Christmas vacation is our time together, and a cruise will be just what we need to really take advantage of that time. That's why I've said I'm excited just at the prospect of laying in the sun...whatever happens, it's sure gonna be better then work, school and housework! ;) And I'm sure those of you in cooler climates are going to SERIOUSLY be psyched about laying in the sun.

Though I had the weirdest dream last night that I was in the Atlantis casino searching and searching for a video poker machine :rotfl: What the HECK? I could dream about a cruise and I'm dreaming about gambling instead. LOL, what would Freud make of that?

So I saw that Disney is releasing "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in December. Anyone want to lay odds that they'll be showing it on our cruise? I watched the preview on apple.com and it looks wonderful!

I don't get over to DIS very often, but I thought I'd check here since I recently booked this cruise also. It'll be me & SB (sexy boyfriend) - both of us in our mid-late 40's, traveling without any kids! It'll be his first cruise ever, while I've done 8 Disney cruises and 9 on other lines (favorite being Holland America Line). We're in a category 5 on deck 7....figured for his first cruise, we needed to do it right!

We'll be spending 3 nights in a 1br at Old Key West before the cruise, and I'm doing the half marathon on that Saturday. I should be easy to spot on the ship - I'll be the one limping, lol!

Not sure if we'll bother with the shows - I'll leave that up to him, as I've seen them all except for the new one. We'll definitely book Palo - wish I could be sure of our dining rotation, but most likely we'll be TAPP. I might book the brunch, too - I know he'd love the crab legs & other stuff.

Nassau day for me has always been a "stay on the ship" day...went ashore once and that was enough to last me a lifetime. Besides, the ship is so nice when everyone else is gone!

This will be our 7th Disney Cruise and we have never gone to Palo. Before we have always had our daughter with us and she wasn't old enough to go there. Now she is 18 and could go into Palo.

The Palo brunch is amazing - the best brunch I've seen anywhere. They've got a table full of stuff like jumbo shrimp, big crab legs, etc. Another table has all kinds of breads/pastries. There's more, too - just can't remember it all. Plus, you can pick one of the entrees - eggs benedict, tilapia, some beef dish, and something else. I had the eggs benedict - don't normally think much of it, but this was absolutely delicious! Definitely do the brunch if you can't do dinner....I'm sure many will try to do both!

In my case SB has never been on a cruise before, so I hate for him to miss anything. But, there's no way I can eat 2 dinners! I'm thinking we'll have the TAAP rotation, which means to do Palo dinner I'd want to pick either 1st or 4th night (missing Triton's or Parrot Cay since I like the pirate menu and want him to see the light changing in Animator's). Brunch would have to be 4th day, but then I can't eat much dinner (especially with a chocolate souffle). So, we might have to book Palo for dinner 1st night, and do brunch on the 4th day....eating light in Parrot Cay that evening.

I looked at the Palo dinner menu today and not being one who likes seafood, there is not a lot on the menu that interests me.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't be willing to try it out though, but probably not this time.

We were mulling over the brunch though.

I don't think you can get your dining rotation in advance but I'm not one hundred percent sure of this.

I'm gonna have to go and look at theirs since I didn't get one, at least not yet. :Pinkbounc

Currently you'll be in the same dining room on nights 2 & 3 of the 4-day cruise. One of those nights is Pirate Night though, where all restaurants serve the same special Pirate menu (which is very good). You might want to check ********************** to see the dinner menus, and figure which menu you are willing to miss.

Brunch at Palo will only be on the sea day, Wednesday - and only for a couple of hours.

Hello to all the January 8th cruisers. It was so much fun reading through your posts. My daughter and I will be cruisin along with you on the Wonder. We are so excited about this trip. My daughter is doing the WDW half marathon, then we will be relaxing and recuperating. I can't wait to join in here and join in the excitement. Both of us are Disney fanatics and this will be our second Disney cruise. Happy planning to all!!

Well, I can just say one thing....you're welcome.

Because I can tell you why the time has been going quicky: because I have two oral presentations coming up, and as we all know, whenever something is coming up that makes you want to hide under the covers, time just FLIES. :rotfl:

Seriously though, I am really looking forward to it. I finally had a cruise dream, but it was so odd. I dreamed I was trying to find my cabin, I knew we'd been upgraded, but didn't know to what. I opened the door and it was like the nicest penthouse type suite you've ever seen in your life...put the WD suite to shame. I was plotzing! And when I opened up the balcony door, it was this HUGE balcony...and I realized we had a hot tub out there.

Now how would THAT be for a cabin.

Welcome to all the new guys!

Cruisin
09-14-2005, 06:17 PM
That sure sounds like a nice cabin ::yes::

We all wish we could have one like that.

If you get THAT upgrade you make sure to tell us your cabin number, because we are all coming to visit :rotfl2:

Yes, you definitely have to invite us all up for a tour of that "dreamy" cabin...LOL!

I know what you mean about those door sings...I posted a picture of mine on the cruise board, and I can't wait to use it!!!

So how many of y'all have your passports?? We were going to get ours, but now that it's not required yet, then we may end up waiting...just wondering if anyone else was doing the same!

Cruisin
09-15-2005, 11:46 AM
We have passports already but we are not American, so we have had them for quite a few years now.

My parents are in the process of getting passports for themselves right now. They have not really had a need for them before. Technically they don't actually HAVE to have them to cruise but it is just easier, so I am making them get the passports ;)

Really since we live quite close to the border of the Unites States (one hour to the closest border crossing, several others withing 1 - 3 hours away), we tend to cross over quite often and having passports just simplifies everything.

I should really think about making some door signs. I will have to look at the ones on that thread and put some thought into it, I guess.

We will be bringing our passports. It could make security go a little faster. But I doubt it.

We have passports, just seemed like the best thing to go ahead and take care of back when I got married...since I was busy running around changing things up anyway. For some reason I get nervous carrying around my birth certificate, and it's definitely easier to pull out one document instead of two. Plus I like to know that having a passport on hand makes it possible for me to jaunt away at a moments notice for a week in Tuscany. Ha...Ha....one can dream, right? :teeth:

Well, it's another 100 degree week here....these days January looks great for MANY reasons. :headache: ;)

The temperature is hovering around 80º this week. Nice temperature, I'm loving it. ::yes:: But fall is in the air, the leaves are turning and it will soon enough be cold. :cold:

I agree that it is nice to have a passport on hand. Nice to be ready, because you never know what is going to come up. It'd be a real bummer if you had to miss out on something exciting just because you didn't have a passport on hand :earboy2:

The nerve of these people who keep knocking us to the second page ;)

I saw that they now show cat 4 open again, but who knows what that means. I was curious, so I went to Travelocity to see just how many cat 5/4 are available.

It showed only FIVE cat 5's available! :crowded: The cat 4's won't say how many there are, just says "GTY".

I wonder if there really are travel companies holding on to blocks. I'm just so surprised by how crowded the ship is going to be. By now, the schools (except colleges) should be back in after Winter Break. Course, seems like most of us are just traveling with adults, so that should tell you how many people need breaks AFTER going through the holidays :rolleyes1

Cruises tend to sail "sold-out", with all available cabins filled. Since Disney only has 2 ships in their fleet, they probably have even less chance of sailing with empty cabins. Unlike other lines, hordes of passengers travel with very young children - the school calendar doesn't apply when you're age 4 or 5 <g>. Many will take the school-age kids out of school for a week, too.

Disney will limit the # of kids on board, but it's a very high limit! Basically they have a certain capacity in the kids clubs and won't take bookings for more kids than they can accomodate. Those of us traveling without kids generally don't have trouble avoiding kids, who tend to be in the most crowded/congested areas (such as near the characters, at the family or Mickey pools, etc).

:wave2: I've been lurking on the DISBoards for about a month now in order to get information for our upcoming cruise! We are cruising on Jan. 8th as well and cannot wait for our first Disney Cruise!!!

My DH is running both the half marathon and then the full marathon at WDW :confused3 Since he will be unable to walk for the 2 days following the races, I convinced him that instead of recovering in the hotel room while I ran around the parks with DDs (6 & 4), he could rest on board the ship where it would be relaxing for all of us!

I am really looking forward to taking the girls on their first cruise and I am thrilled to be trying DCL for the first time. DH and I have been on 4 RCL cruises and never thought we'd sail on anything else.

Hello! Oh goodness, another marathoner! You toned guys just have to promise me one thing, if you see the really pale puffy couple, at least sit on the pool chaise one over instead of next to :rotfl2: Kidding, kidding...though I would like to add that I only run when chased ;)

Today was a GOOD vacation day. Finally booked my return airfare...I've been biting my nails, playing the odds trying to get a good price on our flight tickets. Achieved a really good rate from AUS-MCO, but nothing back. But this morning I finally got the rate I was hoping for, thank goodness! I was really starting to wonder if I was just going to have to choke it up.

Although to be honest, the thrill of the shopping bargain hunt is just as intoxicating as the trip itself. I know you planning junkies know what I mean.

Also bought my travel insurance today. Even though we have until 10/25 to cancel, this really makes it feel final and a done deal. Woo-hoo!!!

How about you guys, are you going with travel insurance?

Here's a stupid question btw: do these cabin doors not have peep holes? Didn't look like it on the pics, which seems odd, but thought I'd double check.

I am not an athletic person in the least. I don't think I could run to the mailbox without taking a water break...it's my DH who is the physically fit one.

As far as trip insurance goes...I always purchase it because of the kids. I get it when we are traveling withand without them. You never know when someone is going to get sick whether it's the kids or whoever is going to take care of them. I'd rather spend a little bit of money more than risk losing a whole bunch! But with that said, I do not purchase my insurance through Disney, RCL, etc. I always buy it from my TA. IMO his prices are better and actually cover a bit more.

I am really hoping for you guys to get an upgrade. I seriously doubt that we will since I picked my room when we booked...I was afraid that we would get stuck with one of the solid verandahs again, so I went ahead and picked our room. Errr...not I. You know what they say about chaos theory: a butterfly in Boise flaps its wings and it results in a typhoon in Taiwan? I've got chaos theory running all over the place, one Snickers and I've got a violent explosion in the thighs ;) Two words: lost...cause. :rotfl: Bring on the Chocolate Souffle!

As much fun as an upgrade would be, I am perfectly happy to be in cat 12. I sense trouble brewing on the main cruise board with all the questions and posts of late about upgrades...I think plenty of those people are setting themselves up for a fall. Alas...it's the towel animal expectation all over again ;) I'd be happy in a broom closet as long as I get to take this vacation!

Although I would like to add that while yesterday they were opened up through cat 11, today they EVEN are open through cat 12 :earseek: It's lookin' good, it's lookin' reeeeal good ;) (When you consider that there are only 12-Cat 12's, and I know for sure at least 4 of them are accounted for on this board alone...) Normally on the cruise I always visit the gym, and do a lot of walking/jogging. Right now (at home) I'm at the gym 6 days a week and jogging 6 days a week. The cruise sails the day after I do the Disney half-marathon, so I'm thinking for those 4 days I'll skip the exercise completely (except Vicki's version <g>). What you could do is check out the hotel and guest reviews on Trip Advisor. That site is so very helpful. It can also give you info. on other hotels in the area.

We actually stayed at the Sheriton. I check my AAA book and the official name is Sheraton-Los Angeles Harbor Hotel. We stayed there two years ago and it was somewhat run down and was not up to the usual standards that a Sheraton should have. But it's close to the port and they have a shuttle that will drop and pick you up. A lot of cruise travelers stay there. Most of the hotels in the area will either have a shuttle or arrange one for you to get to the port. Just ask and ck out TripAdvisor for helpful info.

I understand completely that your husband is Disneyed out. Mine is just about there. :earseek: Before our cruise we have not one but two trips planned to visit beloved Disneyland. One will also tie into a business trip but we will still be there three weeks apart. I'm so excited, and I am also blessed since my husband puts up with this. He also enjoys Disneyland but not to the extent that I do. I could go there anytime and it would still be magical.

But congrats on the additional cruise !!! Hope this helps.

Look at all you lucky people, getting to go somewhere fun! Have great trips!

I know what you mean about DH not being as big a Disney fan :) When we went to MK, he said "it's nice, but it's not that different from Six Flags." I gave him SUCH a LOOK! :earseek: I whispered frantically, "are you mad, do you know how fanatical people get about this place? Are you trying to get us beat down at Disney World?"

So I guess since this first time cruiser is within a few weeks of booking her DCL fun stuff, then you returning cruise members are REALLY close! You'll have to tell us how that goes! I'm actually skipping school on my booking day since I have to stay up until 2 am (ok, I don't HAVE to, but I haven't gone this far being anal retentive to relax now! :rotfl: )

I think we've decided to not do a DCL excursion on Nassau. It just sounded like the snorkeling excursions were too packed with minimal exprerience. I taught enough swim lessons in my life to remember what it was like to be kicked by a flailing swimmer, so no thank you ;) Besides...me and crowds, we don't mix. In Nassau, I think we're going to leisurely wake up, eat breakfast and then taxi over to the Atlantis casino. I'm only allowing us $100 total for gambling, so that shouldn't take too long (not with our sad, sad luck). Then we thought we'd change in the bathrooms, and head over to Cabbage Beach behind the Atlantis. Hope it works out, goodness knows that usually on our trips, one thing stands true, "the best laid plans of mice and men...yadda yadda.." :teeth:

Anyone else changing their plans up?

VickiHD
10-04-2005, 07:53 PM
Yes, we have to wait a couple more weeks to book the fun stuff. I'm going to try and book brunch at Palo's. If we don't get it I'm not going to stress. I don't think the Nassau City tour will sell out, so I'm sure we will get our tour.

Pre-cruise question:
Any suggestions on where to eat at Downtown Disney?? We will still be on California time so maybe somewhere quiet. It's so hard to adjust to the time change.

I am also perfectly happy with any cabin at all, that is why we booked the Cat 12's. I wouldn't turn down a better cabin if they offered it either ;) . I also agree that anywhere is fine, just as long as I'm on that ship :cheer2:

With so many of us here booked in Cat 12's I'm thinking that at least SOME of us should get upgrades.

Hi Everyone! I'm new to the group and new to Disney cruises! I am very excited :cheer2: and booked our Cat 12 about 1 year in advance... hey, it's gotta fit in the budget! I am just happy to get a family trip. But it would be very cool if we did get an upgrade.

It is me, my DH, and my almost 3-year old boy. He won't be quite 3 yet when we cruise, so if anyone has any experience or tips for the Nursery please let me know.

Well I just wanted to say 'hi' -- I found this site through another disney board on Yahoo.

I think I want to try out Earl of Sandwich! Such good reviews and a tasty looking menu. Too bad it's counter service though, we spend so much time in line on vacation to WDW you almost hate to add one more ;)

We arrive at WDW on the 5th around 2 pm. We won't go to the park that day, so we're trying to figure out what to do. Either DTD, Jiko's or Trails End Buffet and the campfire/movie at Fort Wilderness. We can't decide :)

We will probably be arriving within a few hours of you.

Where are you staying?

We are staying at the POP Century.

We don't have plans for the 5th but will do parks probably the 6th and 7th. Which ones (or all of them) have yet to be decided.

Hello lacourre and Welcome Aboard. Be sure to check out the cruise tips thread. It's full of useful info. (Like take along plain white pillowcases and some sharpies to leave at Guest Services. You'll get them back at the end of the cruise Autographed by the Characters.) Somebody in that thread will definitely be able to help with your nursery question.
I booked our trip a year in advance as well. I'm looking around for trip ideas for our next vacation in 2yrs already. For me planning this trip has been so much fun and these boards have been my main source of info.
BTW we're so excited about our new family member. My sister's new Chevy Optra. She got in on the last day of GM Employee pricing. It's soo cool she's actually paying less a month on her new car then she was on her 4yr old one. Who knew that buying a new car could SAVE you money. lol
We're arriving on the 3rd and staying at POR. I'm going to sneak in a trip to Walmart on the first day and pick up some sand toys for Castaway Cay, lots of Water Bottles and some breakfast food for the WDW.
How many of us are spending a few days in the world before the cruise?

DH and I are flying in on the 6th, if all goes well we arrive 6:30 pm. It is going to be a very long day for us flying in from the west coast. We are staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort, to keep with the tropical theme of the cruise. We just had a long WDW vacation a couple of months ago, so we only visiting Epcot to hit the other countries we missed. Dinner will be at DTD. And I have to hit the scrapbooking shop to get supplies for my new hobby.

Disney site shows we're back down to cat 4,5,6,8 & 9. Guess not everyone plans these trips so darn far in advance...heavier on the pocketbook, but much easier on the nail biting anticipation ;)

We're staying at Pop too, but I'm hoping super hard for a discount for January. I really want to upgrade to one of the Deluxe resorts. I don't think the odds are great for our weekend b/c the marathoners have already booked up alot of those rooms. As my TA said, "they all want places with hot tubs" :rotfl2: Who can blame them, I get a leg cramp just thinking about vacuuming!

I'm scheming and maneuvering things for our 2 days. I think since Friday is early opening at MK, we're going to go park there, take advantage of Space Mountain a few times :thewave: Then we'll monorail over to do a little Epcot, then either back to resort to nap or straight back to MK. Either way, I want to close down MK. I just love the Kiss Goodnight :)

Saturday we'll do AK early entry, then MGM for ToT and RnRc...we were going to hit Epcot around 1 pm on this day (Since the half marathon will be over), but I read that they're having a family 5K and special kids races starting at 11 am actually inside Epcot, so want to avoid it. I think we'll just go back to the resort for a rest, then either to the World Showcase in the evening or back to MK again.

Then we ALL know what happens on Sunday ;)

Oh why can't these darn clocks move faster!!

Wow, you've got your days planned out really nicely.

I don't have a clue what we are doing and when. I think we will just go with the flow and do whatever my parents want to do. They move a little slower than us. Also we will (hopefully at least) have tons more years to visit WDW and they won't, so it should be geared to their interests for the most part I think.

I will make a note to avoid Epcot on Saturday though :earboy2:

Oh heck ya, I figured with four parks in two days, I had to be. I just love touring plans. I hate lines, so those Passporter and Unoff. Guide plans are like my bible :) To be honest I think it kicked my planning obsession into overdrive when I heard what a snarl the marathon causes transportation in the a.m., so I wanted to plan our parks around avoiding the marathon routes...ergo, no Magic Kingdom on Saturday morning for me, no thank you!

Vicki, I doubt Epcot will really be that bad. I mean, they wouldn't put it inside the park if they didn't have a plan. You know how those Disney people are, they're a whiz at logistics :) Although, being trapped in France for a few wouldn't be so bad...kicking back with a glass of wine, cheese plate, an eclair or two. Oh the hardship!

I have to make the most out of this trip :guilty: I doubt we'll get back to WDW again unless we decide to have children. There's just too many other places we want to see, and too little vacation time. DH has humored me long enough. Who knows though...maybe if DH just looooves the DCL cruise... ;)

Do you think we have to worry about leaving WDW for the Port early Sun. morning due to the marathon?

I don't know about you guys but I want to get to the port EARLY!!! Come on planners .....what time is everyone leaving?

I guess it's that time in vacation planning when the nightmares start and I start worrying about everything. How much $ in change do we need for the tolls? Since we're driving ourselves, I'm worrying about getting lost driving around Florida, never getting to the port in time. (It's to soon to starting having these worries, we still have a couple of months to go.)

Cruisin

I have checked the marathon routes and think that we will be okay getting away from the POP Century Sunday morning. I can't say for any other resorts though because I did not look.

We typically leave between 9 - 9:30 to head over to the port. Gets you there about when they open the terminal.

Time to check in and explore around the terminal before they open the ship for boarding.

:rotfl2: Once you get on the toll road it is pretty hard to get lost on your way to Port Canaveral. Once you get closer there are plenty of good signs pointing the way. The best and biggest sign of course will be the Disney Wonder itself :teeth:

I forget how much toll money you need but it wasn't a whole lot, I'm guessing in the 2 - 3 dollar range. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

You want to know what a big nerd my husband is?

We always bring a laptop with us for downloading our digital pics and for watching DVD's while on the flights.

SO, big tech geek bought himself a GPS thing that plugs into the laptop and sync's up to a Microsoft Trip Planner. He absolutely plans to bring it with us to Florida so he can find our way around (shhhh...I'm secretly bringing maps just in case ;) )

Yeah, I plan to haul rear over to PC :) I just can't imagine being able to sleep in or move leisurely, I'll be way to full of excited energy. Since we're dropping off a rental car at Budget, I think it's a good idea anyway. I figure we'll take everyone's suggestions and one of us will check in while the other drops the car off. Does anyone know what time they start allowing check-ins, or at least start doing curbside luggage checks?

Cruisin
10-05-2005, 11:44 PM
It is really easy to find the port. I don't think you will have any problems at all. Once you get close there are tons of signs that say which turn for which cruiseline. No big deal.

I can't sleep in either and I would rather get on the ship as soon as I can because that is when the vacation truly starts. As soon as you are aboard, you are a pampered guest and the "real" world no longer exists.

I believe that the port opens at 10:30am. I don't think they let any cars in until then. Have your documentation, proof of citizenship etc ready when you pull up because they will ask for it when you drive in. They will then check for your name on their list.

Usually boarding starts somewhere between 11:45 and noon.

And then we are off and running to the buffet line :rotfl:

My mother in law is coming to stay this weekend...

The men showed up to deliver our new mattress and..what's this? Why they forgot to load it in the van at the warehouse! We've already gotten rid of the guest bed...so someone may be sleeping on the floor...

Thirty minutes later the cat hurled on my brand new week-old duvet...

My hair is doing that weird flippy humidity thing...

And I think I'm getting a sinus infection.

VickiDH, REAS is a romantic escape at sea package (i think that's the official title) that includes various things - like rose petals on the bed one evening, bathrobes, passes to the rainforest room, dinner at Palo, etc. They recently changed what was included. But from what I have read from posters who have purchased this, they would not do it again. Obviously some love it as well. You can find the exact details on DCL's web site and make your own decision about it.

We (well, I was) were dead set on doing the couples cabanna massage on CC. But then I read a thread where everyone was saying it wasn't worth the money...the massages weren't that great and it was expensive. Now I am wondering whether to do it or not. My DH will do it if I make the reservation, but it isn't anything he is dying to do. But then again, I made him a massage appointment at the Grand Floridian on Sat after the half marathon, so he's taken care of :)

Can't wait until I can make our Palo brunch reservations!!!!

attagirlx2 ....I've also heard great things about Le Cellier. We'll have to compare notes what we thought of our lunch and your thoughts on dinner.

We enjoy Rainforest Cafe. We have been eating there for years and we have been to a number of different locations. They have great salads and I love the crab cakes. It is loud inside but I'm sure your kids will love all the animals and special effects. You can also join the Rainforest Cafe Safari Club and save $$ on meals, also in the retail shop. It's even good at other restaurants owned by Landry's Inc. They also send you certificates on Birthdays and you get $$ back in a certificate a few weeks after you join. You can find out all the details on line or even at the locations. Hope that helps.

Thanks VickiHD for all the info on the Rainforest Cafe. We somehow never made it the last 2 times we were at DW even though we had advanced seating reservations. I guess both times we got too busy and didn't make it. But my DD's have seen it advertised on the DW video and have wanted to go. I thought if I heard some positive feedback on the restaurant, we'd not miss it this time around. My youngest DD (4) is hoping for Rainforest Cafe and breakfast with the Princesses and Chef Mickey's. We've done a total of 4 princess breakfasts and 2 dinners at Chef Mickeys on our previous 2 trips. I am not planning to do either of those this go around.

Hi JoyCrazy - I have not seen them posted yet, but the extra magic hours as far as I can figure out should be:

Jan 3 AK (pm)
Jan 4 MK (pm)
Jan 5 Ep (pm)
Jan 6 MK (am)
Jan 7 AK (am)

Others feel free to revise if you have better info.

Can't wait to head south... :cool1:

I have a question about online reservations for Palo. I can make them 75 days ahead of time, but does that mean I will be allowed to right at midnight? I thought I saw a post somewhere that someone mentioned setting their alarm for 2 am to make their reservations. Any thoughts????

I did a search on the main cruise board some time back...can't remember what search parameters I used. I know that I saw that for my time zone I can sign up at 2:01 am :) Each time zone is different. I'll do a search again and see if I can find it.

Thanks Branv for posting the information !!!

Yeah, finally the West Coast people get a break. I've paid my dues getting up numerous time at 4:00 am to call WDW dining to get the all important, almost impossible, must do priority seating. It's hard working the phone when your eyes are half open. :rotfl:

When making the reservations on line is it pretty straight forward?? Any trick we need to know????

I found it was very simple, once I got into the site. Evidently I'd registered somewhere on Disney years ago & didn't have my birthdate entered. Because of that, the system wouldn't recognize me to send me my password - so I had to register as a new person, using my work email address. Once I did that, it was a piece of cake.

Thanks Sue. I will check and make sure everything is OK before I try and sign up.

So, for those of you who are doing dinner at Palo, which night have you decided on?
I made our ressie for the 3rd night, which would be CC night. Just wondering if anyone else would be there at the same time!

Being first time Disney Cruisers, we are going to skip Palo's for dinner. It will give me something to plan for the next one! Plus, we are doing this cruise to spend lots of time with our DD's without the baby DS. So, we plan on using the kids clubs as little as possible. I know they have some activities that they will want to join in on, but I want to plan only one time that they HAVE to go. My DH LOVES breakfast and I LOVE seafood, so the Palo brunch menu sounds perfect and that is when the DD's must go to the kids club. :) Now, I just hope we can get in!

I am sure that after you cruise you will definitely want to re-book. I think it's awesome that you want to spend time with your children.

I am excited about the Palo brunch as well...just a little nervous. I hope that it isn't too "stuffy"!

Only 86 more days to go...can you belive it! :cheer2:

No Palo plans at all here.

You guys enjoy your time at Palo :)

Cruisin - why no Palo plans? Did you dine there previously and not find it worth going back? Or just in general no interest in it?

On our RCI cruise a few years ago we went to their alternative restaurant - Portofinos. It was incredible! I think I ordered 3 or 4 entrees. The other couples we were with didn't think I would eat it all. I showed them! :rotfl: On our next couples cruise I would definitely try to eat there again. Plus the service was great and I have always thought their regular diningroom service was wonderful. But this was so much more so. I am assuming Palo is the same type of experience.

But I don't think it will be "stuffy" at all. It is a Disney cruise afterall. I think it will be very nice but I don't think anyone will feel out of place. JMO, obviously since I've never been there.

No, this will be our 7th Disney Cruise and we have never as yet eaten at Palo.

I have looked at the menu and I'm not sure that I would like it. I'm willing to try it sometime though.

In the past we have always cruised to our daughter and sometimes with others. Now our daughter is 18 and would be able to go to Palo with us but in the past we didn't want to go and leave her behind.

This will be my parent's first cruise and I think they will be happy with eating in the dining rooms and also at the buffets or dining rooms for lunch.

Maybe some day we will get to Palo :earboy2:

Can't wait to try Palo's!! I'm actually on the opposite end of you guys, I'm worried the food on the cruise will be too boring for us. Hoping Palo's lives up to the hype...the more eclectic, the happier I'll be. Now, I'm a Texan girl, and I can eat bologna sandwiches, frito pie and chicken fried steak with the best of them, but I have high expectations when food is supposed to be gourmand. I'm turning into a "foodie." It's gotten worse over the years, and I'm afraid DH is also turning into one too. Once I got him to start eating mushrooms, it was easy to bring him the rest of the way ;) We love to try new interesting things (though I draw the line at squid). Saturday night we went to the local gourmet food grocery store, and spent the night watching a movie and eating goat cheese with prosciutto, french bread, little slices of chicken feta spinach sausage, and red wine. His mother thought we'd lost our minds. I made her a roast beef sandwich :teeth: We're like changling kids as far as our families are concerned. Understanding that to our families, eating wild rice is taking a walk on the wild side and creme brulee is "burnt pudding".

that's the beauty of this cruise though, y'know? You can try something you've never heard of, and if you hate it, just order something else. I'm finally going to take the dive and try the escargot at Triton's. Can't wait!

branv, you will definitely have to let us know how the escargot is! I just don't think that I can be that brave. I thought I was doing good when I had fried alligator...which tastes like chicken by the way! LOL :p

However did you get your DH to eat mushrooms??? I've been trying for years. I think he has even managed to convince the kids that they are evil. But usually I don't complain because that means more for me!

I like a lot of foods, but I guess I am pretty conservative as in I know what I will eat and will always order that. I am not brave enough for escargot!

branv
10-13-2005, 08:10 PM
Ok, UGA, here's what you do....2, 3..40 Tequila shots and I'm SURE you can brave the escargot!! :teeth: I know, I'm just going to have to delete the word "snail" from my brain before I do it.

And you know, alligator DOES taste like chicken! :rotfl: (So does rattlesnake :p ) But then, that poor croc gets the short end of the stick...to be fair, we should say chicken tastes like alligator. ;)

Anyone ever watch Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations"? Now HE eats some funky stuff. :earseek:

Ooh, it was very devious :)

First I made a chicken alfredo lasagna. One layer is mushrooms. But I diced them very small, cooked all the moisture out of it, then added dry marsala and chicken broth until it mostly boiled down and inside the mushrooms. Sandwiched in between all these yummy lasagna layers, he couldn't even tell (it also had onions in it, and he "hated onions". Yeah...suuuure you do honey). I sprung the news on him after his second helping. :)

Made it a few more times, increasing the size of the mushroom cuts.

THEN, I bought a REALLY awesome cut of ribeye. I grilled it, then sliced some mushrooms thin, cooked them the same way as before...garlic, red wine, broth. Made a little extra sauce...poured just a little sauce and plently of mushroom over the steak. Urged with big molten eyes for DH to try it "but honey, I worked so hard on it..." :rolleyes1 .

Now he's a convert. Steals my mushrooms in fact, the little thief.

I think with him, he just didn't get that things like mushrooms and onions take on the flavor of whatever they're cooked in. He'd never had them cooked in something where the flavor they took in was really savory. Lovely little sponges. :)

He still won't eat portobellas though. I think it's b/c they kind of have a liver-ish flavor, and that's just pushing him too far.

You know though, one thing I love about getting older, is it's like every few years, your tastes totally change! Suddenly I find I love stuff I didn't use to. (It helps that you start to mellow out a little more too ;) ) That may be why he likes them now, as opposed to my little culinary manipulations.

Palo menu has a ton of seafood dishes on it and we're not really seafood lovers ;)

I am another one who does not like to eat mushrooms. Oh I can eat them in something but I'd rather not have them. It has absolutely nothing to do with the taste, it's the texture that I can't stand. They feel so slimey in my mouth :crazy2: Mushrooms are safe around me.

Oh no you guys.....I just finished dinner and all the "snail" talk is making my stomach flip. (In a bad way) :rotfl:

I am so squeamish about certain foods. But I love mushrooms!!

I'm looking forward to maybe ordering two entrees if I can not decide between something one night. You know that saying "hollow legs" well lets just say mine are just long. :rotfl2:

No Seafood Cruisin'? Ok, you hear that everyone? The infamous 1st day buffet shrimp is down at least 2 people....more for us! :teeth:

You wanna know something weird? I can't eat mushrooms that are whole...something about that intact gill looking thing underneath *Shudder* So I get texture, it's a whole mind-set squeamish thing. I can't eat most cooked fruit...ugh, mooshy mush mush. Same with oatmeal. So there's my contribution to the cruise food chain: more apple pie and Quaker Oats for the rest of you :)

DH can't do pickles or cucumbers. The inside slimey seed area freaks his mouth out. :rotfl:

Don't you wonder where we get this stuff from?
