Has anyone used a mail order company for bushes, perennials, etc...? If you have, please mention and advise whether you were happy with service.

I do both, honestly though I think plants (especially perennials) ordered from mail order companies in the long run put on a better show.

There shipped in their dormant stage and rapidly take-off. Where plants that are purchased in pots are root bound. The potted plants usually put on a good show the first year. Where the dormant plants increase year after year. I always find that when I purchase perennials in pots they need to be divided by the second year. It ends up being double work. The dormant plants grow for years, look great the second and third year. When you've put a lot of time and money into a perennial garden who wants to redo it the following year.

We all want that instant gratification, like most things instant isn't always the best.

As far as shrubs go I do purchase them in pots. There again it's that instant gratification that I'm looking for.

I purchase plants from Bluestone Perennials and I am very happy with them. I have also used Jackson & Perkins and Spring Hill but Bluestone is my favorite.

I use 2 mail order companies - Bluestone Perennials and Oakes Daylillies. Bluestone sends tiny little plants that rapidly take-off when planted and Oakes sends huge clumps of daylillies, not just a fan or two. I highly recommend both companies.

A good resource for the info you are looking for is www.gardenwatchdog.com

Thanks to everybody for your advice. I've had my eye on Bluestone Perennials, but hadn't ordered anything yet. Your recommendations have given me the nudge I need. Thanks again!

I ordered a bunch from bluestone perennials for the first time this year. My order is scheduled to ship any time now and I'm really looking forward to it :)

Two years ago (doesn't seem like that long ago) this board helped me when I asked this question and I ordered from two places that were AWESOME!!! I even had a plant arrive dead and they replaced it AND refunded my shipping on my original order.
